  1. You may have heard on the news about a Southern California man who was put under 72-hour psychiatric observation when it was found he owned 100 guns and allegedly had 100,000 rounds of ammunition stored in his home. The house also featured a secret escape tunnel. By Southern California standards, someone owning 100,000 rounds is considered "mentally unstable." In Michigan, he'd be called "The last white guy still living in Detroit.” In Arizona, he'd be called "an avid gun collector." In Arkansas, he'd be called "a novice gun collector." In Utah, he'd be called "moderately well prepared," but they'd probably reserve judgment until they made sure that he had a corresponding quantity of stored food." In Kansas, he'd be "A guy down the road you would want to have for a friend.” In Montana, he'd be called "The neighborhood 'Go-To' guy." In Alabama, he'd be called "a likely gubernatorial candidate." In Georgia, he'd be called "an eligible bachelor." In North Carolina, Virginia, Mississippi, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Kentucky and South Carolina he would be called "a deer hunting buddy." And in Texas he'd just be "Billy Bob, who's a little short on ammo."

  2. I just happen to come across this while reading last night Curmudgeon definition: "A Curmudgeon's reputation for malevolence is undeserved. They're neither warped nor evil at heart. They don't hate mankind....just mankind's absurdities. They're just as sensitive and soft-hearted as the next guy, but they hide thier vulnerability beneath a crust of misanthropy. They ease the pain by turning hurt into humor. They attack maudlinism because it devalues genuine sentiment. Nature, having failed to equip them with a serviceable denial mechanism, has endowed them with astute perception and sly wit. Curmudgeons are mockers and debunkers whose bitterness is a symptom rather than a disease. They can't compromise their standards and can't manage the suspension of disbelief necessary for feigned cheerfulness. Their awareness is a curse. Perhaps Curmudgeons have gotten a bad rap in the same way the messenger is blamed for the message. They have the temerity to comment on the human condition without apology. They not only refuse to applaud mediocrity, they howl it down with morose glee. Their versions of the truth unsettle us, and we hold it against them, even though they soften it with humor."

  6. I drove a farm truck at 10, shot my first rabbit at about the same age. Both happen to be he fondest memories I have with my dad and grandfather respectively. I will admit both to a court of questioned too. I also rode a four wheeler that say operators should be 16 and older at a lesser age and used a hammer without goggles as described on the safety sticker to post my land and build wood duck boxes for years. If you are going to say that's lawlessness you're right. If you are going to say you're always in compliance you're wrong. Shouldn't be published- but it shouldn't be illegal either. In our world, state and NY hunting culture you're missing the boat if this is your issue. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  7. Why is it that every time something about gun confiscation comes up so many people make excuses as to as to why it was the right thing to do? Every one likes to say must be more to the story and then gives reasons for why it might not have been wrong. We do not know for sure if that is the whole story or not. It might just be that the story is just what is written. If anyone believes that this does not happen without an good reason then you are blind. I have seen people who locked himself in his house [where there guns] with his wife and threaten to kill himself. When he was talked out he went to jail. Funny thing is when he got he kept his guns lost the wife but not the guns. I have also seen someone lose there guns for argueing with there wife and she got mad and called cops. His guns were taken because the court felt he was dangerous. I know for a fact it was only a shouting match and nothing dangerous was said or done but because she wanted to see someone else and for him to be gone and she look like the good guy in the break up she said she was afraid of him. I was there when this happened but the courts took her word. The fact that this guy was a firemen and disabled means nothing. I am a firemen and have known many who were as crooked as the day is long. How a person looks and acts in public can be very different from them in person. Same with leo or military. Not a knock on them at all as I fall in one of these groups however these things do not mean you are a top grade person. Funny how everyone screams foul about the safe act but when someone has there guns taken away the first thing that is said is there must be more to it they wouldnt do that for no reason. WAKE UP PEOPLE these laws give them the right to take your guns just because thy want to they need no reason. I can not believe all the excuses being given for this possable being right. Maybe it was the right thing and there was a right reason but to think that it will always be the owners fault when they are taken is blindly fallowing like sheep. Yes if we do not like the laws we can move to where these laws do not exist. However if we just keep moveing these laws just keep getting passed. People have to stop running and stand and fight or we will run out of places where we are still free. If that is what we are now. If we keep ignoring these things soon they will have what they want and that is all the guns and all the power. Powerless people are easy to control. Keep thinking they do not want all the guns and one day you will wake upwith none and wounder how this happened. That is when people like V J P will be able to say you were told this would happen. Oh and who cares how many or what kind of threads someone posts? If you dont like them do not read or post to them. Why cry about someone trying to open your eyes? If you wish to stay blind then stay blind.

  8. http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory/scientists-tumor-causing-virus-widespread-wild-turkeys-28324797 http://www.outdoorlife.com/blogs/strut-zone/2013/04/turkey-virus-alert-new-york-and-maine-older article, but has a photo showing the outward signs. It has since been confirmed in NY. http://www.earthisland.org/journal/index.php/elist/eListRead/a_new_virus_is_attacking_us_wild_turkey_populations/- Also older, but has a much more through understanding of the virus. In a nutshell, wild turkey populations in NY state, and likely many other states, are carrying this virus. I study similar retroviruses in domestic chickens and can confirm that based on my knowledge, and the research out there on LPDV, that it is an easily transmittable virus that remains in latency (dormancy, if you will) and only produces symptoms in individuals that for whatever reason are either genetically weak or have a reduced immunity to the virus. The virus does not often cause mortality in these individuals, but instead causes a weakened immune system, which is an open door for other problems to move in (ailments that an otherwise healthy turkey would have no problem fighting off). As an RNA virus, once a bird 'catches' it, the virus copies itself and remains in the birds system forevermore, and periodically causes shedding of the virus, causing either horizontal transmission (bird to bird) and/or vertical (parent passes it on to the chick through the egg... vertical transmission is somewhat more rare). So, a large number of birds may be infected but may not show signs and may live full, healthy and otherwise normal lives. If you take a turkey with outward signs, it could be LPDV or pox (neither is contagious to humans) and the DEC is interested in testing so you may want to notify them. I'm mostly posting this here so folks know about it and know what it might be, if they see it.

  9. This is exactly the issue here. How can you deny an American citizen a Constitutional right without due process? If no charges were ever filed to take away his 2nd Amendment right to possess firearms, taking them violates his rights. This is what worries me most about America today. Average citizens have no idea what they're rights are and assume they are granted to them by government, when in reality, they were born with them and cannot have them taken without due process. If we allow our rights to be unconstitutionally violated, we are giving them up voluntarily and they can never be regained. That's why, when we hear of cases like this, it is wiser to make the government the party that has to prove they are not guilty of violating someone's rights.

  13. This is why NY gun laws are as bad as they are. Many NY gun owners just don't think they are bad, don't care about them, or are just oblivious to the encroachment. Carry on. Besides, nobody makes you read any of them. Why would you want to prevent equality of forum use because you disagree with the opinions of another member? That equality thing seems to be a problem with some residents of NY as well.

  15. Neighbors can call the cops when they hear you yelling. I'm amazed by NY gun owners who always think taking away someone's guns was justified, instead of part of a political agenda. I guess that's why NY has the unconstitutional gun laws it has. Forgot to point out - if there is more to it, why has it been a year with absolutely no charges filed?

  16. Well the extension of bow hunting on LI into January is done. I think I am finally warming up from yesterdays hunt, WOW was that cold! I can't say I hit the woods very hard because most of my hunting grounds where shotgun only in January and a couple of colds kicked my but. I was able to get 2 more days in a spot with a 160+ class buck roaming the area but never got a shot at him. I jumped 3 deer heading in yesterday and had one doe at 15 yards two weeks before but was not able to get a ethical shot off as she was on the move and caught me by surprise before I was set up. I am thankful for a fun season and that it is finally over! This season kicked my but!!! That guy Murphy and his laws showed his face a few times too many. I hunted Otis Pike most of the bow season because it has very few deer in it like up North in the ADK. Rocky point the few times I hunted it showed a vast difference in population vs Otis Pike and I think I will hunt that area more next year as it seems to need population control. The private land I hunted was great with many sightings, wish I could hunt that area more but I am only a guest. Hope everyone had a great season! Personally I am happy its over as I burned the candle on both ends. Almost makes me want to jump on the (Shorten the season.) bandwagon but I enjoy being out too much for that. Ok time to go shoot the bow, then get ready for another snow storm.

  18. When the $h!t hits the fan and your life, and your families lives are on the line, ...when its up close and personal, the average person, no matter what training course they have gone through, will not know how many rounds they have fired, will stand in the open and probably not think to grab another "clip". When faced with an intruder actively coming at them, the average person will have tunnel vision and concentrate on the attacker only, and protecting themselves and family. I have seen it more than once.

  20. Except for ones high on meth or some other substance. And then there was a recent case of a Vet with PTSD, who smashed his way into a home, despite verbal warnings that a gun was present. He was eventually shot, but survived. He had some kind of mental episode and was not in full control of his actions. Jihadists are known for amping up on drugs and epinephrine before battle or suicide attacks so they can be shot but continue to advance. It's an ancient tactic. Might be coming to a neighborhood near you.

  26. Happily did the survey and not surprised by results. Our average hunter is getting older and owns more orange than camo. I am a deer fanatic and would love to see more mature deer. Everything you think we have me pounding yes in those questions. Care to know what I want? More dec involvement. Yup- that's it. Fines and pen tallies that hurt poachers. Deer census and take monitoring (not this car accident, stopped by a processor, phone a robot crap) Zones that make sense Hunter interaction not a survey sent to 8000 of 450000 hunters. We pay a lot of money- far too much for the understaffed and incompetent organization we have telling us what's best per their pocket linings. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  27. None of your examples have anything to do with protecting a Constitutional right... if you start losing that right in one state, the rest of the states could fall behind it. And, WE didn't elect him... THEY did.. most of WE didn't even get out to vote and I'm betting because they have a similar thought process as you... I tend to give you a little bit of a pass though.. you're the same age as my sons and, like them, it isn't that you're not able to get it... you just have a lot to learn yet.

I just can't resist trying to get them to care. Posting about gun rights on firearms sites isn't necessary, as that would be preaching to the choir.

  41. Exactly! That is one of the most dangerous parts of the SAFE Act. Revoking the pistol permit can be done for NO reason, and all of your 2nd Amendment rights are taken with it. That's one of the reasons NY residents, and I mean ALL NY residents, should be so adamant about having the SAFE Act repealed. Rights should not be so easily removed from anyone! And if they do take all of your firearms for whatever reason, what legal recourse do you have to get them returned? if there is No legal method of recourse, that is clearly a violation of many constitutional rights.

  42. First off, I've known perps to continue advancing on police officers after being shot, and many have continued to invade homes after being shot at. I do not know what "studies" you are referring to, but I doubt they are unbiased or peer reviewed. Blaming a home owner for not properly defending himself with his firearm is excusing the perps for the invasion. Next, owning a firearm for defense is a RIGHT. Owning and driving a car isn't. Mandatory anything is a deterrent. Making it harder for people to have a defensive firearm in the home simply means fewer people will have them and home invaders will be emboldened. That handgun can be used by anyone in the home when necessary. What if the wife was home and didn't have the training? Would she be prohibited from using the pistol to defend herself? "Gun Advocates" encourage training, but don't want it mandated. The stopping power is determined by shot placement. Maybe his shots were off. that's the point of the PSA. Who needs a large cap mag? Someone who misses a lot. I don't think I would kick someone in the face when they are holding a handgun.

  48. tapatalk does that... I enjoy the mount that she did for me. Very realistic. I like the wood style backer, but they take up a ton of space on whitetails and make them look small imo. My little buddy that I mentored in hunting was google eye over her daughter. He even wanted to make sure he rode with me to pick up the mount a few months later. Funny stuff, since she hunted (I think), he felt she was perfect. Never had the guts to inquire.

  49. A Guild to Adirondack Deer Hunting by Mr.Charles Alsheimer. They do not sleep like us. They move and take naps. http://justnorth.com/Articles/tabid/105/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/2759/PageID/2442/Do_Whitetail_Deer_Sleep_and_Where_Do_Deer_Sleep_.aspx Deer are natural nocturnal animals. During rut bucks tend to get careless and roam more often covering much larger area's to inspect doe herds often during the day. Try to find good doe tracks or sign and follow them, choke points are good, if you can be in the area of the doe the bucks will come. Stay in the woods as long as you can, pack a lunch and extra food and know how to get out in the dark. Deer have no time table. Good luck! Hope you get a monster!
