Steve and Doe do you hunt in AR area's?

No, yet I've killed more bucks that would qualify under AR's in the last 8 years then some of you fellas who hunt in AR zones. Go figure why? Maybe you guys just suck as hunters and should consider tiddly winks instead of hunting??

You know you really are a clown. I remember your posts from a good while ago. You only come out from under your rock when AR's are discussed. You hunt in an AR area, and you already have your AR's, yet having them in your area isn't quite enough for you. You are just gloating that the entire Catskill region now has to go along with what you want, aren't you? As I have said before, you can hunt for bucks that are ten years old and toothless, but why does it bother you that some hunters hunt for sheer enjoyment and the size of antlers don't concern them?? Why must they now have their experience diminished, just because you want YOURS enhanced? Totally not f#$%ing fair and you damned well know it, yet you are just loving it.

And lastly to all of those who say simply go shoot a doe, well gee I would love to but there are zero permits for my area. I hope all of you boys in western NY are ready for steve863 and I, we are pulling up stakes and heading your way.

Let me know when youre on your way buddy, Ill have the beer on ice!

OK Grow, at Pygmy's request I am posting a Kumbaya video, so I figured I'd post your rendition of the lovely tune.

Enjoy, and may peace be with everyone!! :bye:

Just a question for everybody on this thread. How would everybody feel if they got rid of the AR's and went to a 1 buck rule for the entire state? I would much rather see the 1 buck rule go into effect than have AR's.

John

I would love a 1 buck rule honestly.

Im still on the fence about ARs. Part of me says they are good, but Im not big on stepping on peoples freedom to hunt the way they want. Id rather see a 1 buck rule.

I've been away for a while, but I see that you still talk from your mouth and your rear end, and unfortunately from both at the same time. Earlier in the thread you state that you really aren't much of a supporter for the AR rule as it is implemented in most states and now you rave about its undisputed proven facts. Unbelievable!

Pay attention I said I'm not much for the 3 on a side rule, yet I think it's a start... it just doesn't go far enough. Don't read what you want .. read what I write.

The one buck rule would really get the guys battling... you can't make rules in hunting.. hunters should be able to do what ever they like, take as many of any size they like... they pay a ton of money to get their one weekend a year in so why should they care about rules, or conservation... it's all a scam anyway... nobody cares about killing a big buck... meat hunting is the right thing to do... besides they don't give enough doe permits... and all the crossbow hunters are gonna kill the deer first anyway... plus there are no proven biological reasons to maintain balanced deer herds... and all you AR lovin' deer management guys are just trophy hunters that coudn't kill a deer if your life depended on it... ONE BUCK??? OMG!!! that just crazy!! That would mean all the hunters would be through hunting at 7 am on opening day.. think of all the revenue the diners would lose out on... :suicide:

Really? well don't go talking to some of the guys on this site then, they must be telling tales about the old bucks they have killed.

I used to believe that old buck thing but then I learned how to age jaw bones. Like I said it is on the DEC harvest data pdf so take a look. Unless you’re in the Adirondacks unlikely you got an old buck. If you think so let us see the lower jaw bone, both sides and the head.

well im in 8y so im not excited the whole frigen state should be AR unless your a kid!

these grown men who kill 1 1/2 old deer left and right are just plan pathetic!! nys has great potential to be on the map for big bucks you wont have big bucks like we should if these ignorant un skilled so called hunters keep killing spikes small 6 points 4 pts half racks ect.

O look a deer boom woo i killed a 4 point is embarassing if you ask me its like having a small dink or a ugly wife..........

hunt for trophy class 125" or better Bucks even a 115" (decent 8point ect)

("where I hunt there isnt a 115 ' buck") thats because you kill all the 1 1/2 olds every yr ect!!

this meat hunter bs is bs, you want meat shoot a doe or go to the grocery store..!! to all you small buck killers do your self a favor and step your game up will ya save some Bucks for the upcoming hunters ect!! you watch in 2 yrs the ar areas will have better class bucks guaranteed.. Its a shame that a law has to be put in place for a hunter to make the right decision.. with that said i hope everyone has a succesful safe 2012 deer season!!

Dont shoot a small garbage buck!!!

This is a perfect example of what is wrong with some hunters. Sir you embarass me as a hunter.

I wonder what percentage of the AR supporters would still support it if it was mandated all antlers must be destroyed or turned into DEC. Horn porn will kill traditional hunting as we know it.

I am not against QDM but AR is not QDM and is really a poor across the board solution. I would be in total favor of it if it was say put in effect for all hunters after their first 5 hunting seasons.

I have read, as I am sure most of you have, of the breakdown of the stages of a hunters years.

SHOOTER STAGE

The hunter talks about satisfaction with hunting being closely tied to being able to “get shooting.” Often the beginning duck hunter will relate he had an excellent day if he got in a lot of shooting. The beginning deer hunter will talk about the number of shooting opportunities. Missing game means little to hunters in this phase. A beginning hunter wants to pull the trigger and test the capability of his firearm. A hunter in this stage may be a dangerous hunting partner.

LIMITING OUT STAGE

A hunter still talks about satisfaction gained from shooting. But what seems more important is measuring success through the killing of game and the number of birds or animals shot. Limiting out, or filling a tag, is the absolute measure. Do not let your desire to limit out be stronger than the need for safe behavior at all times.

TROPHY STAGE

Satisfaction is described in terms of selectivity of game. A duck hunter might take only greenheads. A deer hunter looks for one special deer. A hunter might travel far to find a real trophy animal. Shooting opportunity and skills become less important.

METHOD STAGE

This hunter has all the special equipment. Hunting has become one of the most important things in his life. Satisfaction comes from the method that enables the hunter to take game. Taking game is important, but second to how it is taken. This hunter will study long and hard how best to pick a blind site, lay out decoys, and call in waterfowl. A deer hunter will go one on one with a white-tailed deer, studying sign, tracking, and the life habits of the deer. Often, the hunter will handicap himself by hunting only with black powder firearms or bow and arrow. Bagging game, or limiting, still is understood as being a necessary part of the hunt during this phase.

SPORTSMAN STAGE

As a hunter ages and after many years of hunting, he “mellows out.” Satisfaction now can be found in the total hunting experience. Being in the field, enjoying the company of friends and family, and seeing nature outweigh the need for taking game. Not all hunters go through all the stages, or go through them in that particular order. It is also possible for hunters who pursue several species of game to be in different stages with regard to each species. Some hunters feel that role models of good sportsmen, training, or reading books or magazines helped them pass more quickly through some stages.

I would hate to deprive the new hunters of experiencing all the stages. I am well past the first two stages now but man did I enjoy them.

And for those that care or say there are no meat hunters bull! 80% of the reason I hunt is for love of the hunt and bringing home meat. I take pride in preparing and eating that meat all year long. My family will eat 2 to 3 deer a year and I rarely if ever buy beef. In fact I will be grilling venison steaks on the grill in about an hour. The next 19.5 percent is sharing the hunt with family and the social aspect. The other .5 % is my care about a big buck. The stage I am in now I let a lot of young ones pass and if you read my journals on this site you know that and that I usually do not take 1.5 year old deer but this year I did and he tastes great.

And for those of you that say take does!! I wish I had that opportunity. Some of you guys with too many need to start sending out invites!!

Just my 2 cents and I respect all your opinions except the poster above.

Peace

Way back when I got my small and big game hunting lic. It was a 1 buck per year and 3 people to a party permit for a doe.We were young and put our time in hunting sunrise to sunset. We all had meat in the freezer every year.Did not have an archery or MZ. stamp.Although I shot long bows and recurves since I was 10 years old.Shot targets and Rats at the local land fill.It was not till 25 years later that i got my Archery cert.I think the antler rest. are a good thing,Look how it improved the heard in PA.And yes I will only shoot 1 buck a year and have not shot a doe in 5 years. For myself I see no need for more meat.

Great Ceasar's GHOST !!..

That is my long lost Aunt MILDRED !!

My last memory of Aunt Mildred was when she and Uncle Fester had a farm where they raised apples and maple trees...Thier main crops were apple vinegar and maple syrup..

Well, Aunt Mildred was out in the barn one day and she slipped and fell.. It just so happened that she went butt over head and landed with one breast in a vat of cider and one in a vat of maple syrup..

The hired man, Charlie Wackdoodle, saw her lying there and dragged her out by her heels..

Aunt Mildred wasn't wearing any skivvies, and poor Charlie hasn't been the same since..

Aunt Mildred recovered, but one breast had been marinated in the cider and the other one had been pickling in the maple syrup..

She had one side tattooed SWEET and the other one SOUR...

Last I heard she was making a good living down in Dirty Pilar's House of Pleasure and Taco Emporium down in Tijuana.

I am not saying you are old but I was told that by my farter inlaw, when he started hunting that all you got was a buck tag.He also said that it could be used for a doe the last day of the season. When did we get so greedy?

Steve and Doe are always welcomed at my place, they can shoot what they want. Never put restrictions on people and never will. Don't see why the state has to do it. There are 11 guys from PA that come up here to hunt, put AR's in they are history. They pay for their tags and want meat. The icing on the cake is a nice buck. I got a gun club that preaches AR's, they hit all the neighboring properties preaching letting the small ones walk. During gun season we see small bucks hanging from their meat pole and there always is a bogus reason why it was shot. Don't see a need for it and never will doesn't help anyone except the trophy hunter. In my eyes every deer is a trophy.

Here are a few of the ugliest bucks on my trail cams over the last few years. Which one is No. 1 ugliest buck in your opinion? Will they ever be great animals, ones that we dream about?

    • By nyslowhand
Interesting article in latest issue of NYON (11/25/16) about AR by one of this forum's member, Buckstopshere. Article, actually more of an editorial opinion is entitled "Making a point on antler restrictions". Buckstopshere, please correct me if I'm interpreting your opinion incorrectly!
The crux of his opinion against any AR, mandatory or voluntary is that shooting younger bucks allows the 2+yo bucks to develop & grow at least another year. Very interesting concept which has some merit! Although the theory is somewhat counter-intuitive, culling the younger bucks to have bigger, mature bucks around your area. I've actually done this occasionally in the past if I've seen an overabundance of younger bucks on summertime trail cam photos or during bow season. Problem is, we all know exactly why we hunt, especially during the rut - those big, old bucks!! Not a lot of bow hunters would tag-out on a smaller buck and then sit out the rut or continue hunting with the antlerless/DMP tag only.
I do agree with the author about mandated AR taking away the hunter's choice or options. Do NOT agree with his disdain for the DEC's campaign to educate hunters about voluntary passing on smaller bucks to allow older (2+yo) bucks to mature or develop more. This is actually something I suggested to the DEC when they were soliciting input about deer management. Basically to not impose statewide regulations with no regard for the hunter's choice of harvest. Also suggested they (DEC) educate the hunting community about doe and buck management and let the hunters decide and micro manage their specific locations. This education campaign is not a shaming ploy as the author suggests, merely an instructional tool.IMHO, it's more of a - harvest what you want, but just so you're aware shooting younger bucks might reduce the number of BBs eventually. But by all means, enjoy deer hunting as you would.
Anyone else see this article? Agree with the author? Am I full of crap?

As expected some PA bucks have become quite resourceful in response to AR's.

After all of this talk about ARs and how a state wide 3 pt rule might go into effect, I want to get opinions about this AR. First of all I want to say that I think the 3 pt rule makes no sense. It lets the superior 1.5 yr olds, ie 5 pts, 6pts, 7 pts and 8pts get shot.  And lets the spikes to 4 pts live.  This is my take, why not have an AR that you can shoot any buck that has a single point, ie a spike, 3 pt, or anything that has a single point on one side, or the buck has to have 4 pts or better on one side.  This lets the superior 1.5 year olds live and takes out the "junk" bucks.  This also lets all the "meat" hunters shoot the spikes. and lets a lot of 1.5 yr olds live.  I would much rather have this kind of restriction than a 3pt restriction.  Thoughts?

I remember this was a hot topic in the past, but lets keep it nice and clean :-*
Antler Restrictions - What are your thoughts? Is it working? Do bucks that are spikes grow to be bigger bucks with bigger racks next year?
