Would you turn your own father in for poaching? Your dad only had one tag. Shoots a buck day 2 of the season. Doesnt tag it so he can hunt more. Do you turn him in?  Oh also he informs you he saw a 12 pt near your stand he is now going to go hunt.  Oh btw you took a week off of work to head to the cabin and hunt with him and my brother all next week?

No but it's not right and you feel the same way or you would not post this.  Let him know how you feel and that hunting ethically is the only way to go...  Plus it gives you a better chance at deer if he follows the rules.  One buck per season max!!!  What if he shot 2 monsters this year during bow then 2 more for rifle and you get nothing...  Good luck and tread lightly!!!

I know I wouldn't. That's my father and I would never call the cops on him or anything like that. To be honest if he shot the 12 point I would be happy for him because its my father and I would be happy he shot big deer. Being very close to my parents does effects my decision too.  I will always have more time to shoot a big deer as well. I might catch heat for saying this but i'm sure there are many other people here that wouldn't turn their father in.

Tough call for sure. I'd let him know how you feel, and if he doesn't respect you for how you feel, then you'll probably have to make a decision as to new hunting partners or not. Either way, good luck.

So what if "Dad" decides to do this three or four more times this year?  How much is too much?  Look at this the other way.  Any Dad should be saying to his son, hey there is a 12 point near your stand go get him and good luck.  He seems pretty selfish to me.  We all let emotions cloud our decisions and I am glad I was never in this situation as my dad would have never considered this in the first place. Hell he would turn my butt in without hesitation.    HUNTER INSANITY even effects families.  Hunter competition and greed is a recipe for disaster just waiting to happen.

No way would I turn him in.  But it sounds like you and your father have issues.  Most fathers I know would tell their son about the 12pt and be happier if their son gets it.   They would never hunt near their sons stand and take a buck away from their kid.  When I hunt with my nephews, I much rather have them get a deer than me.

I would find a new place to hunt.  Let him do his thing and you do your’s.  The bond between father and son is more important than hunting.  But if you are actually consider turning your dad in, your relationship with him is already broken.  Spend the time he has left mending the relationship.  If you call DEC on him, it will be broken forever.

no. sounds like a father and son talk is in order though. End of the day, he's your dad. I'm against poaching just like others, but it's not like you're contemplating turning on him for cooking meth, murder etc.

My father has been hunting for over 50 years. He's shot some great bucks and as at the point where he's very selective and eats some tag soup. He spends hours scouting, hanging stands and understanding our woods. I think he is more happy that he helped me shoot a 2.5 year old or bigger than to shoot a wall hanger himself. Knowing he has instilled his passion for hunting in me and that he has helped me reach my goals means more to him than he will ever say. But it's obvious by the big bear hugs after a kill that it does. I hope I can even get close to doing the same with my son some day.

I know it is probably splitting hairs but I would call him on the carpet for having an untagged deer. (But I know my father wouldn't do that). But I would gladly cough up my tag for him. I have no idea how many more seasons I have with him. I wouldn't let this get in the way and I would love to see him get a slammer. Emotion vs legalities  and ethics. should be a easy call for the latter but as we can see in this thread it isn't.

Sorry man but your dad sounds like the exact type of guy that we would be tearing to shreds on here. Not to mention it's super selfish to hunt your stand because he seen a good buck their, what kind of father does that?? He puts deer and himself before you. If I were you I'd ream his ass out real good, I love my father but I'm not afraid to tell him exactly what the deal is when something bothers me. Did I mention your dads a poacher? Best of luck man, sorry to seem harsh but that is not cool at all.
