No more back tag

Just went to Davis and renewed my license; so, they give you all paper, even the tags!! Howre you supposed to prevent them from being damaged carrying em around throughout the season (unless you tag out first day, that is )?

On the bright side, though, Got all of my requested DMP's this year-first time ever

I buy online. Thought they would mail paper copies nope. You have to call for that. I don't have a printer and I'm not buying one. I'll stop at the local gun shop and buy there.

New York was one of the few states that required a back tag, but only in the Southern Zone (Northen Zone and Catskill Park did not require back tags).  It's unclear to me why there were differences between Northern and Southern Zone and it never made any sense to me.  I'm glad to see New York "catching up" with other states, but, like most others, it never really bothered me to wear a back tag.  I did find it annoying when it scraped against the tree when shifting around in my treestand but, otherwise, it was never a big deal.

Not wearing a back tag is fine, I always said as long as it’s on your person and can produce it when stopped should suffice. Not being issued the synthetic license is what annoys me. Bottom line, the state is broke because of the shrinking tax base and their making us use our own paper. They recommend using our own ziplock bag for the paper when tagging a deer. I predict a lot of missing tags when you arrive at your destination and find the tag missing from the deers ear.

And then the deer hangs for a couple of days and goes to the processor. Gets moved around there also. Things happen, moister and paper ripping is going to be a big problem. If I had my own printer I would use a stock thickness like a folder. Punch the tag and reinforce with those round stick-on  support thingies. Ziptie or wire will do.

I also want to see if once you print will it let you print a second or third time. I can see it locking you out and having to call DEC to tell them why you need to print again. Scenario

I shoot a deer and tag it. Process it myself but do not call in game harvest. It's now in my freezer and I print the tag again and shot a second deer on the same tag. I don't need to do this but there are some out in the wild that will try.

So I guess if you want to hunt, you better have a computer. Does everyone have a computer and printer? probably most do, but does every hunter have computers and printers?

Nope, you don't need to call the DEC to ask them to print it again.  I bought mine online and they email you a pdf of your license and you can print it 1000 times if you want.  Why in the world wouldn't the DEC think that this will just tempt people to do exactly what you were describing is beyond me.  The only way these plain paper tags would work without tempting people to keep killing on the same tag is if they made people phone or text in their kill into the DEC right away.  Right now you still have 7 days to report your kill.  Plenty of time to bring your deer home, put it in the freezer and kill again on the same reprinted tags.  Unreal how stupid the DEC is.

As far as the backtags getting scrapped I could care less.  Never bothered me to wear it.  I simply hooked it on to my backpack which I always have with me.

I was able to download a PDF file from the DEC website.  I can print it as many times as I want, as long as I have access to a printer.

Some people say that cheaters are going to cheat regardless of the situation.  But I bet this change will make it more tempting for some to dabble on the wrong side of the law / regulations.

I agree ; maybe when affixing it to your deer, may have to put an additional tie around the tag and leg to prevent it from blowing around too much or something.

I carry my license in a foldable holder I picked up at my town building when I got my license. Carry it in the pocket of the pants I’m  wearing under my bibs. Or in my backpack. It has never gotten wet once. I think people are more worried about these getting wet than is needed. Time will tell though

I am going to punch out holes on the edge of all my tags and reenforce the holes with those binder circles on both sides, I will use small zip ties to attach and carry everything in this small fairly weather proof card-license wallet.

As far as the rest of the tags needed , I am thinking of copying them on Photo Print Paper that would hold up better than plain printing paper .
