Corruption and indoctrination

Just a minot rant so bear with me

So I haven't watched any hunting on television in a long time but I am layed up for a few days so I put it on.

Out of 7 shows on turkey hunting I've seen .

1. None have shown a turkey killed without a decoy setup in place.

2. None have show a bird killed in the woods. It's either an open field or a clearing on a logging road.

3. 3 have shown hunting with out a blind, out of 34 hunts between all 7 programs.

4. 4 actually used bow, 6 crossbow, the rest were gun hunts

5. 4 were women hunting, 3 with kids the rest were all pro staff men hunting.

6. 6 were filmed in ny, most were the mid west amd south.

7. 1 hunt talked about roosting birds the night before.

8. None explained the calls they were using or why

9. 24 hunts mentioned that they were champion callers.. I guess maybe local contest champion counts..

10. Actually was impressed 5 were Jake hunts (unfortunately all were by kids or women) like men can't shoot a jake...???? They taste better imo

Just kind of sickening the push for products you need to hunt turkey thay are not needed..

No one talked about patterning a gun few even talked about scouting ahead.. most was we saw some sign and set up..

Guess I am not a turkey hunter by tv standards.. no wonder people try it and give up.. or look like they are on expediton or safari with all the gear they carry.

Anyone else remember the old videos that taught you something?

Back when I was learning to hunt turkeys there WEREN'T any turkey videos, in fact there was not a LOT of stuff in print about turkey hunting. A few writers like Dave Harbour, Dwain Bland and Charles Elliot wrote about it, but they were few and far between. I got my first calling lessons from a 45 RPM record recorded by M.L.Lynch himself.. Still got the record, but I don't have a record player anymore.

I dont see them as ruining our sport, just like I dont see porn as ruining anything either. I do see them for what they are the majority of the time, 30 - 60 minute long commercials.

Yes but think of someone that doesn't make that distinction, how would you feel knowing there are new hunters thay think this is the way?

MeatEater. I'm convinced Rinella can see into my soul.

Hands down BEST hunting show I've ever watched! They really make me feel like I'm on the hunt with them. I print a lot of his recipes out too.

As far as the OP, I like watching pretty much anything the Drury boys do. They obviously promote a good amount of products but what I enjoy about them most is the videos they make outside of their hunting shows. A week or two ago I watched a video with Mark Drury and Billy Yargus where they went over the different kinds of turkey talk and how they get those sounds w a mouth call and a slate. They also went over set up, roosting birds, etc. It was like a 15 minute video and was really informative. It was posted on their facebook page.

I have seen the older Drury video on habitat management. They were informative and entertaining.I know they sold mad calls and mostly do things with other company's now as Drury outdoors.. early quaker boy video and early primos were ok as well.. not sure when it all changed to watch me shoot this using this product..as I said been a long time since I tuned the tv into a hunting show..

His show is good (IMO) and podcast better. Randy Newberg is another political yet fun to watch guy.

Educationally- there are a few webshows and DVDs.

As for not ruining it- my stance is different. They program us to think the pizza guy really gets three blondes that just got out of the pool. It is so hard, even when rationally thinking, to know antler inches do not come to those with skill as much as those with fertile soils and/or money. How many on here hunt field edges? In most cases this is a poor poke and hope tactic. How many shows film here in NY for whitetails? None.

Hope you get better soon G-Man.

Those hunting shows on TV are for 'entertainment' purposes. They aren't meant to teach you anything, just sell product. To be honest they are sports entertainment, I would rather watch the WWE or basketball for sports entertainment.

I agree but to a new hunter talk about being misled and lied too... I find that most upsetting

Their are very few shows that i follow,

those are the local ones here in WNY and the ones that are informative..

I used to follow Drury's religiously .. then they became more lame.. until they came out with Drury"s 13 i do like that show.. they produced it for information only who what where why how setups..

i don't think they're ruining anything, but its all about the money. i just dont watch it much more. unless its a good informative show.. my dvr records a ton of shows, and i delete the majority of them before even watching them.

I especially wont watch a show that hunts over bait pile, or that only rifle hunts. The shows that show real life are the ones that catch my eye... not the dreamy shows

the big guys don't film here so much. I did catch a show on the sportsman channel and I wish I remembered the name, but they put on some drives up in the Adirondacks. About a dozen guys pushed a few MOUNTAINS! The main guy didn't get a deer but one of the kids shot a small 6 and they all celebrated it. It was cool to see "normal" hunting.

Additionally I do watch deer and deer hunting tv. And try to catch heartland bowhunters and buck commander for entertainment.

Sometimes we assume every new hunter might think these shows reality but I'm not sure that many actually do. Most of us had a mentor, and someone going in blind is hopefully doing a little more research on websites like this than just watching the outdoor channel. I didn't have a mentor for turkey and gained a lot of knowledge watching some shows, the Drury brothers in particular had a show where they competed and scored based on different types of turkey hunts.

Years ago, you could watch these shows and actually learn something about hunting.  Now, as mentioned above, they're all about selling products- and showing exotic locations, freakish antlers, etc.  I very rarely see a show anymore that portrays anything that I can relate to.

I think some of you need to relax. It's just a TV show. They have value for me - whether I deem entertainment or informative or both.

I'm certainly not whining when I'm on hour 20 of working that day and then need to catch a flight home - and then settle into my plane seat and turn on an episode of HB or Midwest Whitetails, or a podcast to unwind and think about the fun things I do when I am not working.

Sometimes I think you guys just overthink too much. A bunch of squawking old ladies at the Bingo parlor...

Those shows really are for entertainment only...When you want to learn about real turkey hunting and get the REAL FEEL of what its all about pickup a copy of Dwain Bland's Turkey Hunting digest...I just love that old book for reference and for pumping me up for the upcoming season!
