Will most likely be continuing my routine of long morning hunts this week. Seeing decent doe movement and a couple little bucks but no big ones yet. I'm growing impatient lol. Hoping my patience will pay off big time in the end. I just know there's some monsters that are running around my area. They gotta slip up one of these days....

I am honestly overwhelmed by all these replies! Extremely appreciated!

I hate to not reply individually to all of you, but please know I really appreciate it.  All I ever wanted was to show people in my situation that you can do anything.  I always push myself.

I agree any deer is a trophy, I just wish this deer was older so it had more of a life, thats all I mean by that.  That is just how my conscious works.  Thankful the shot was great! And trust me I am very excited to have venison nachos, and chili! Can't wait!

Grampy! Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts during the season! I will be back at it looking for the big guy!

Lawdwaz- glad you are as psyched as I am! Thanks for that.

DanielT- All I want is for people to realize they can do anything! No....matter.....what.

Chefhunter- Thank you! I am very happy to have venison again, been a long year without it, lol.

Wolc123- don't get me wrong I am thrilled, I guess I just have a heavy heart after a harvest.  Very happy about this opportunity, and I truly look at it as no different than any other deer I have harvested.  Deer nachos, and chili ASAP! Good luck, I hope you get your opportunity at your target button buck, sooner than later.

I probably should have put this in the harvest thread instead, I did not expect so many replies since I am such a new member.

Thanks Bionic, he will get a break this weekend, when I head up to the Northern zone (with my gun season buck tag and my rifle).  If he is still around the following long weekend (I took next Friday off from work also), I might get a crack at him with the crossbow, or the shotgun on Saturday or Sunday.   I prefer the crossbow, because it destroys less of that meat which is almost worth it's weight in gold.  My crossbow and my rifle are my only weapons that I have not taken a button with, so it would be nice to break the ice.  Did you save the liver?

Wolc123- That sounds exciting going up to the northern zone.  I honestly did not save the liver, never really gave it a thought since its not something I grew up eating.  You're probably cringing reading this.

Fasteddie- cheaper at shoprite after all our hours, etc lol.  Good luck!

On 11/7/2016 at 8:57 PM, upstate said:

took a busted up 4 point with a gimp with crossbow. It's an ok way to burn my tag. Back leg looked like it had been broken a while ago.

Had him try and chase the doe in the field and then began making scrapes 50 yards in front of me. I decided if he cut through my island of trees I'd take a shot.

He was 40 yards out and stopped behind a tree. All I had was head, neck and boiler room available so I aimed at boiler room and let the Excalibur roar (my god they're loud). He hunched and bolted out into field, tail down. He stopped about 20 yards out and I expected him to fall over. Then he ran over a knob and I lost him but never saw him cross field.

I wait 30 minutes and go try to find arrow. Took a while and I find it about 20 feet past where he was and off to the right about 15 feet to right of where I expected.  Its covered in tallow, no guts (thank you!) and there's a few drops of blood in leaves, bright red.  I decide to see if I can find blood in an open field , in the dark now.

It took about 3-4 minutes and there was lots. Tracked about 50 yards and there he was, with a hole in his hind quarter and evidence he bled out from a femoral artery hit. It must have hit something cause I could not even see his back legs when I shot.

2015 sucked for  me , saw 2 deer during gun, and nothing within 75 yards during bow so I decided it was freezer time.

So we skinned and cut the deer up tonight.

The arrow did pass through the deer at the most messed up angle.  It entered just in the front of the hind quarter and ended up exiting  the lower rib cage.  Ruined some meat in the hind quarter but there's plenty of good meat left and it will be enjoyed.

Congrats to all the hunters today.

I had to drive to Rochester at 10:30 from north of syracuse and saw deer all over the fields, mid day, including some monster racks near Montezuma.

My God I long for this time of year when I hunted near Rushville and Middlesex, I would be in my stand all day....

Live from in front of my tv , I was up until 330am watching Trump win . Got up at 6 and could not see my truck in the driveway . Went back to bed .The fog is so thick in 9K , you can't see more than 50 yds. 44 degrees  and windy , light rain.

I'll catch the  afternoon run . I ,m just going sit here and revel in the win we all wanted  to see.  My gun safe just made a huge sigh of relief . Thank You Donald Trump.

      Hi Everyone,
It is current the last week for regular season in upstate NY. Living the life working and being a full time student, I have some time off this week and would like to take a ride upstate to do a gun hunt. Never have I hunted public land in the areas 3 G, F, or N and was looking for some recommendations and help! I had used the DEC info locator and found California Hill and thought I might go there. Is there any recommendations on areas to go to in any of the wmu’s? Or on California? Any help would be really appreciated!!

      best of holiday wishes!

Hello everyone I’m currently looking at a house in deposit ny I’ve been deer hunting for many year mainly in Columbia and Greene county never been to Broome county. Before anything I was just curious how is the hunting there ? I know there aren’t any antlered restrictions in Broome but are there monsters out there or is it mainly just small spike? If anyone from that county or knows about deposit and broome county would get back to me i would appreciate it. Hope everyone hunting today catch a big one thanks.

The procedure below to carry the bow is detailed below:
You have to use a cotton towel or something similar. You have to wrap it around the bowstring. Doing so ensures that it will not cause an injury with the bowstring coming in contact with your body. It will not be that sharp either. Once you cover the bowstring with the towel, you have to wear it like a sling. So that it will not fall away from your body. The best way to cover the bowstring is to use a large enough towel. You can wrap it around twice as well. When making a sling out of the cotton towel, you have to ensure that you tighten it to get a snug fit. In that case, it will not slip away. Consequently, it will remain in place. When using this technique to carry a bow on your back, it is essential to practice before going in the wilderness. Only when you can move briskly and without noise using the scanning mechanism should you go ahead with it. To remove the bow, you have to hold it at the bottom. After that, you have to slip it over your head as well as arm. Doing so ensures that you can remove it quickly. When trying to focus on a prey, you need to remove the bow quickly. The technique for removal that we have highlighted above can certainly help you do so.

I'm new to the area and looking for some places to hunt  the next few weekends through bow/muzzleloader season. I'm living in New Paltz, and the place that seems the most promising to me so far is Vernooy Kill State forrest, and north into Sundown. Has anyone had any luck in these areas? Is there anywhere better in the area I should check out? Any info is welcome

      Hi Everyone,
My name is Raul and I am a new hunter! I've been hunting public land for now, but have been suffering. I've done 2 10 hour sits at Kings Park and 3 10 hour sits at Rocky Point and haven't seen one deer. I use a treestand and use scent blocker. I also get there super early in the morning. I need help! I plan to go again this friday. I scouted Rocky point after the first day and always see sign and I try to hunt the areas, but no success. I hunt around 42 and 36 I think. If someone wants the exact spot I can send them it on a map. I am really just looking for help in any areas and everything. I have put so much effort yet all i want is to just see one that will keep moral up. Any help is really appreciated!
