Hunting camp

Recently purchased a cabin built by the amish. It will be primarily used as our "hunting camp". No electric or running water. What's everyone else"must haves" in their camps. We'll have beer of course. Looking to start some new traditions with the family.

How about a cast iron Dutch oven. You can cook low and slow while you're hunting. So many great meals and desserts with easy to follow recipes and such on the web. Cherry cobbler is a mainstay for us when we camp.

Where you puttin' up that there homestead pardner?

 

I would be more then happy with a canvas wall tent with a floor or reflective tarp as a floor, wood stove, and cots. Assortment of cast iron cooking pots to use on the wood stove and good to go.

Im at mine right now Lol..

A TV is nice you can get an antenna and I have about 14 channels for free,, I have power so lucky there,, heat is also a bonus I have electric which os nice because its quiet while sleeping,, a toilet is a must and maybe a wheeler to drag out the deer or do work with..

Well thanks if that was for me, but I bought this property 3 years ago and has been a lot of work it was run down with coons living in it ,, always something to do but its a labor of love..

I've got it most of the walls complete. Adding the bunk beds, table, and another cooking surface this weekend.

I'm well off the grid and have propane every thing but my "must have" is my propane refrigerator.

I use camp all year long and no more lugging Yeti coolers and ice through the woods. The fridge was used and it was like new. Uses about a pound a day of propane and I have two 40 pound tanks I switch off. There long lasting and manageable by myself...

OMG...Kelly and I were laughing about that last weekend. A few stitches later after an hour drive and all was well.

Camp must have: first aid kit..... (Novocaine and sutures optional)

OH yea, we had our priorities and I guess your bleeding out wasn't one of them.

Camp must have: clean wrapping for gaping flesh wound after making poor decisions while on the roof...

My first hunt camp (back in high-school) on the hill was a brush lean-to. My buddy and I spent a week up there in about 6" of snow. then a bunch of years later, my Brother-in-law and I used a real upscale hunt camp:

Then we went all in with super accommodations. my 12' x 12' cabin :

This one even had a bathroom.

Now we have come a full circle. Hunting camp is now back at the house. It's not near as much fun anymore.

My camp I built 3 years ago. Took me a little over a year to complete it.

When we were looking for our camp, the two must haves from the wife were: shower, and indoor toilet.

Our toilet flushes from a bucket, and there was room for a shower stall with a hand pump....she was happy. 

Water is essential for washing, etc.....we collect rain water from the roof into two 55 gallon drums....that lasts a long time, and rain water is seldom short of hand in NY. We have propane throughout for lights and cooking. Our Yeti cooler is miserly on ice, and keeps  food cold for an easy five days. We have a rule of no electronics/ tv there, camp is where we go to be with people. (we do have a radio, and e-readers for our old eyes!).

Propane lights and stove. Solar panel with 2 deep cycle batteries and LED lights.  Shower with a propane instantaneous water heater.  But the most important part of a camp in my book is an old fashioned perk coffee pot. NO Coffee tastes as good as coffee out of that.
