Mall Entrance Panhandlers

Who is annoyed by theses people that stand along the access ways to malls and openly panhandle? They carry signs that indicate they're broke, homeless or in need of gasoline to "get home"..

I was so annoyed at one the other day by the local Walmart as a healthy looking younger woman who was nicely dressed, new designer sneakers and a small backpack was showing a sign "need money to get home safely"....

While the wife was shopping I went to the customer service counter and inquired if they were hiring and the reply was they are always hiring. I politely obtained a application for employment from the customer service worker.

As we left I had the wife pull over by this woman and I summoned her over and provided her with the application, directions to the service counter and I gave her a pen. I very politely told her that if she was in need of money, they were hiring immediately and she could obtain employment and make as much as she wanted through employment. After blank stares from her we drove away and she declined to take the application.

Sad, but I guess she was holding out for a managerial position.....

They don't want work, they want free money!!

Saw a thing on the 20/20 TV show awhile back, where some of these people drive away in expensive cars, and live in nice houses.

I've thought about making my own sign, and showing it to them when they are standing there. "I'LL WORK FOR YOU"!!!

My point was, "Do something, anything." This guy might be the exception, but at least he's going to the trouble of painting himself. New Orleans is a weird place.

FWIW I lived in New Orleans for almost a year with a gal who did caricatures for people. She was a street artist, and made decent money. She was good at it and she enjoyed it. And the street musicians were amazing. I'd toss them a buck if I could.

If you're going to basically 'panhandle' at least play an instrument or juggle and entertain people for a couple of minutes.

Best place I have ever been for that is Barcelona,Spain. All kinds of talent on display; some of it very good. Many of the musicians had CD's for sale.

Second best place is any intersection in Southern Africa. Carvings, handcrafts, food stuffs for sale, firewood; but they give you something for the money and not just begging. Last trip gave a kid $2 US and got a drywall bucket full of fresh produce for camp, and he was running down the road to show his mother what he made. I skipped the fresh roasted field mice on a stick.

Years ago daughter and I driving down transit road by French road. We passed an older hippie looking guy carrying a backpack and sign that said the usual “ need money for food “ I then pulled into Burger King drive thru with daughter asking what we’re doing. I bought a breakfast combo with an orange juice.  Turned around and drove back. She handed him the food and he was very pleased. He commented he liked her croc shoes. Wished him well and safe travels. She still talks about it.

most of us don't have a chance to see the circumstances thrown to a lot of folks. Certainly there are the professional panhandlers. I have met and cared for many homeless who simply choose a different way of life, at great sacrifice (one gentleman....and he was a gentleman...lived between several highways, hidden away by the brush until some punks set fire to the brush and incinerated his home...and him, one night).

Then again, there are simply the crooks simply trying to separate you from your money. One woman in our area last summer would scam folks at gas station into "buying her gas so she could get home". She hit me up several times, even after the first time when I asked her where she lived, so could buy enough gas to get home. When she replied an area only a few miles away I started to give her a dollar so she would by enough gas for the distance, and she stormed off in a fury.

What's sad is that it's happening more and more. No one wants to work for what they want.

I have 2 younger sisters and sister in law that have had everything handed to them guess who has an education, job, homes, vehicles. Being given everything they have no sense of responsibility and feel that if they want something they should just be given it. Gotta thank mom for that BS. My oldest sister does have a home now but one her BF bought, if it weren't for him she wouldn't have a pot to piss in.
