  1. One more day of work, one more 3D shoot, and one weekend away from opening day!! I'm 27 years old and feel just like I did when I was 5 on Christmas morning. I can't wait to be in a tree on Monday! Good luck everybody.

  2. Right you are Joe. But all the regular guys I know are deeply dissappointed with the deer situation in Northcentral Pa. to say the least. So the vote is a landslide against! There are a few who have a lot of acreage tied up, huge food plots that suck in the deer from all over, especially in poor mast years... and the wherewithal to hunt the whole season...they have big smiles. But the regular guy who has to work, has a family to raise and not thousands of dollars to dump into food plots or can afford a big lease payment each month...is getting the short end of the stick. AR's and elietism seem to be walking hand-in-hand and I like to think that what should make the difference out in the woods is who is the best hunter and who is the best shot. But I am old-fashioned with old fashioned values.

  3. First , you cant compare ny to other states. your big buck states, il,io,oh,ks,missouri for example. Their total number of deer hunters is less than half of the hunters in new york! The average land owner in new york is 50 acres or less, the other states 400 acres plus!! the hunter density per acre is much greater in ny than other "big buck states" their season are much shorter. Your comparing private land/lease with the rest of the state. are big bucks possible here ...yes! many land owners can manage their own harvest or may group together to control a bigger area. Our taxes are 4-5x as high as big buck states! for my own property almost $9,000 a year. i belive i have the right to choose what i shoot what i want size wise! if you want the big bucks here man up buy/lease land enforce your own restrictions. leave the rest of the 400,000 of 500 thousand hunters and myself to choose owr own trophys!

  4. A man, Bob, and his friend Joe went out hunting. This was Joe's first time ever hunting, so he was following Bob's lead. Bob saw a small herd of deer and told Joe to stay in the exact spot he was and to be quiet. After a few minutes, Bob heard a loud scream. He ran back and asked Joe what had happened. Joe said “There was this snake and he slittered across my feet, but I never screamed. Then there was this bear that came up to me and snarled, but I never screamed.” “So then what did make you scream,” Bob asked, exasperated. “Well,” Joe continued, “two squirells crawled up my pants and I overheard them say, ‘Should we take them home or eat 'em now?’

  5. I remember when you bought your license and got one tag that was for buck only during the regular season and it could be used for either sex archery, if you were lucky enough to get one during archery season you could buy another for $5 to use for rifle...that and you also had a chance at the limited amount of doe tag's and if you still had one left over you could use it for either sex during late archery or muzzleloader......now they give out too many tags........saw a lot more deer back then before they complicated things.

  14. personaly speaking i do not feel like i am a trigger happy hunter. in my lifetime i have taken several 8 pointer's some 6's busted5's and yes spike's fork's and does. every season i think about what it would be like to hoist up on a 12 to a 16 pt buck. every year i go into the wood's saying this might be the year. in all honesty i have been lucky at least i can still hunt and get excited about the thought of hunting. i really dont think NY neesd's another law telling a hunter what he/she can or cannot take. for those of you that let a smaller buck pass........ good for you that is your choice and i respect that. for those of you that go out and fill your tags legally........ i respect that as well. plain and simply put it comes down to a choice. it should never come down to one group making a choice for another.... just my humble 2$

  15. I hunted Pa and live in Pa all my life. It USED to be good till the AR BS. I got a decent buck just about every year till the AR BS started. It is NOT liked by anyone I know. Most down to earth hunters I know, are meat hunters and could care less about the deers age or what is on it's head. Why can't you rack hunters get it through your skull, that there are people out there that do not care about the rack or age of the deer? Meat in the freezer and a filled tag,a few days in the woods,a few days off of work and some fun times with hunting buddies. I lost out on too many deer that I just could not tell if it had brow tines.....so tag soup was made, all them days off of work that I DON"T get paid for and a few guys going home and back to work with a bad attitude because the tags were not filled. I would rather go home with a forkhorn than nothing at all.

  16. WOW!!!! BigGuyNY.................I thought you pulled your own post!! The post I wrote I pulled myself because it looked like I was talking to myself without yours being there. LOL! You mean to tell me that with all the mud slinging, bad language, and name calling that is all over this site your post was pulled within minutes of being posted. Your post is clean although provocative but not crossing any line that I could see. You must have hit a nerve someplace. By he way I kept what I wrote and will likely post it elsewhere on this site at some later date, with some modification so it does look like I'm talking to myself. LOL!

  23. So you see plenty of 2.5 baskets. Guess what - they where 1.5's and AR does nothing to protect scrappy baskets. A 6pt 1.5 is no different then a 1.5 spike. You want the biggest and think everyone else should be forced to cater to you to get it. The only thing that will put large numbers of real mature deer - 4.5 and older - in NY like Illinois is doing what they do - limited access and low pressure. AR is not even a tiny step toward this.

  24. I have family that hunts over the boarder in PA that say the same thing. At first they hated AR's because they were use to shooting the first spike or 4 point that came along and almost never saw anything near 120ish. Now they all kill big bucks every yr and like to rub it in with cell phone pic's as soon as they kill one. Its really kind of annoying but go's to show that it does work.

  25. Advanced NY Hunter Members 989 posts LocationUlster NY Posted 12 September 2012 - 07:53 AM i live and hunt in 3J and we were the first to have AR in NY state, started about 6 or so years ago. i have never shot a buck to small, i just sit and wait till i can count the antlers, then make the shot. its not really as tough as some hunters might think it is, i might add that AR has most of us hunting bigger bucks now anyway, not uncomman to see nicely racked 8 and even 10 pointers in my area now when 10 years ago we were dubbed the land of the spiked buck. 26. ok so we got one guy that is against being told what he can and cant take. but is hunting on private land that the owner has placed his own restrictions (being told what you can and cant take)?? there is plenty of public land at your disposal if your so against having restrictions.

  29. I'm not an advocate of AR's but I'll agree with this statement. On the other hand, I've killed plenty of spikers and crotch horns to stretch my smile a mile wide! ...but as a shed hunter I gotta say there's a lot more 1 1/2 yo's that make it through every season than some of you pro-AR guys will ever admit or perhaps ever even know about for that matter. I'm good with no restrictions..... I'll take anything either side of this debate leaves behind once season closes.

  30. Currently 24 states and counting have some sort of AR in place or other restriction ( 1 buck only, Mandatory doe harvest before a buck ) So its coming to a neigborhood near you in some way or form whether you like it or not.Might want to get use to the idea. IMO AR is better than only being able to shoot 1 buck or having to shoot a doe before I can shoot a buck. Hunting is not for the benifit of the hunter but for the benifit of the overall herd which most hunters seem to forget. AR's main focus is to increase the overall age structure of said herd.Which leads to a healthier herd. Which is good for the hunter and the herd. For yr's I have heard nothing but complaints about how the DEC isnt managing the herd correctly and then when they try to, people start complaining that their rights are being stomped on. Well plain and simple its not about you and its never been about you its about a healthy deer herd and conserving a healthy deer herd for future generations to hunt. SO get over yourselves, you will still have meat in the freezer.

  39. "They have tons of deer and tons of BIG BUCKS." Maybe that's why it works there. Shooting all the doe here especially in ares with low populations is the worst thing for QDM. You need a large overpopulation of deer then you add some form of antler restriction and doe management. This "shoot a doe if you want meat" is whats killing the QDM in NY. There are large portions of the state that don"t have the deer population to support QDM. Being able to shoot 3 doe in almost any part of the state without any control over where is ridiculous. Think about it. If you want lets say 1-4.5 mature buck. You will most likely need 2- 3.5, 3-2.5, 6- 1.5 year old bucks. At a almost unattainable 2:1 doe buck ratio you will need 36 deer per square mile. That's of course if your satisfied with 1 mature deer per square mile and you think you can get a 2:1 ratio.

  42. Oh geeeze, I really hate to get involved in that old "what's the matter with kids these days" thing. It makes me sound like every older person I have ever known .... lol. I have to laugh at the pants dragging on the ground with the multi-colored spikey hair and the 15 pounds of scrap iron hanging from every orifice. I have yet to understand why someone gets a charge out of poking a dozen holes in their body and then hanging something there that really looks like hell. But I guess that is their method of "expressing" themselves, so it's not up to me to worry about whatever floats their boat. I just look at it, chuckle a bit and then go on my way. If forced to talk to one of them, I try real hard not to stare too much. As far as the rest of it, I have found out that the most spoiled little brats seem to eventually grow out of it and do finally become some rather up-standing, productive citizens. There have been so many over the years that I swore would be crazy serial killers because of their super permissive upbringing. But I'm happy to say that with all of them, I was proven wrong. So, I guess when we are tempted to remark about the oddities of the current generations, maybe it's good to remember that we are often easily afflicted with a certain amount of culture shock from one generation to another, but generally things seem to turn out ok ...... so far.

  45. Dec has been upsetting hunters since the start. No hunter wanted any regulations. Then they complained about the amount of legal time, then the amount of deer. We will always reject proposals that infringe on our hunting and some one will be pissed off at any change in regulations. I am sorry I pissed off so many unsuccessful hunters in the southern zone... 90 % Let me guese you did not get a deer last year? I have guys who whack over 6-12 deer a year down in the southern zone. They claim they can hit them over the head with a hammer... Tough hunting... But if you can not find and kill one well you need to take a hunting course then... Join a seminar... Learn more about what you are doing and scout some more and you will have better success. Don't be pissed off at me just because you are lazy and can not pattern a single deer... Make your own success...

  46. Think I will join another bow hunter group. At least they seem to care about the animals, instead of saying I just need to fill my freezer... Yea, As a matter of fact I am going to try and make AR a state wide development. Yep. May be you should just move out of state... NFA GETSOME

  47. WHine some more why don't you steve... Just because you want to say you hunt for meat and you can not find a deer with 3 or more points on one side does no mean you can not shoot a deer. If you suck at hunting and can not find a 3 pointed buck so be it... Do not blame AR for your lack of hunting skills... And in so far as me knowing about hunters, ahh yes you know me well. And for your info I have taken deer, but I am very selective... ALWAYS have been since the start. Just the way I am. Do I say everyone has to hunt like me, no that is just your narrow point of view... But if you say I am not hunting because I suck and can not find a deer over 3 point then I will quite, well so be it. Go take a nature walk and have fun... NYS does not need another idiot in the woods so QUIT if you don't like it... Otherwise QUITYOURBITCHEN!!!
    1 point
  48. Oh for crying out loud. Now we start with the conspiracy stories. The DEC supposedly accepted tons of unsigned input and you are blaming AR groups? What is the matter with you people. You will find any kind of silly story to justify maintaining your ability to simply lay back and stay uninvolved. The only thing that empowers any of these organizations is the unwillingness of the whiners to actually get off their butt and take them down or replace them. That's how the desires of the few influences the situations of this so-called "silent majority".

  49. Personaly I feel the age structure of NY's herds are very young. Will AR restrictions fix this? I do not know... The fact that you do not get to shoot a deer for a few years in your area should be of little consequenses, yet many make these AR restrictions a easy excuse to quite hunting, well guese what any excuse will work... This is a big state with much land for hunting, if you really need to bag a deer go to another area with NO restrictions... OR get involved and express your oppinion, start a group or join a group with similar intrest... I understand your complaints yet I feel most hunters could care less about the deer heard and are more concerned with being able to shoot a deer... And that is why I could care less about AR restrictions, personaly I feel they would help the heard... In so far as being in the woods with other hunters for other game, well I understand 1st hand why the bow hunters in FULL CAMO would not want a bunch or orange army guys hunting the same area and clipping off rounds. I was running out of the woods last year from other BO hunters... So yea personaly I feel they should separate seasons so you DO NOT have a guy in full camo with a bow and another guy with a shot gun next to his black powder hunting for bear. Instead of complaining I just go back deeper in the woods during the weekend warior days... You call this selfish yet I just feel most hunters are selfish and could care less about the heard, they just want to be able to shoot something... And if they can not, well then I will just quite seems to be the attitude... Sounds selfish to me... You call these AR restrictions harmfull but if NY hunters start to take a better class of deer in these area's and the animals get to a older age structor and the heard is healthy, well that's what I am about. No bucks to shoot at in your area? 35 members, ok do you have over 1000 achers to hunt at least? 35 people I would say you would need at least 3,000 mimimum. Or are you stuffing 35 hunters in a 300 acher lot? Then complaining thier are no deer to hunt? Just because you do not see deer does not mean they are not thier... I am sorry but if a AR restriction forces you to quite hunting in NY so be it... You were looking for a excuse anyway. ANd to say: "it cost to much to sit in the woods knowing they will not see a legal buck and with no doe tags to boot, they are going to look else where." Sounds like another excuse to stop hunting that area just because thier chances of shooting something are limited... With 35 people trampling all over your property I am not surprised you have people leaving... And that last statement is just a bunch of BS. Nothing in hunting is guaranteed, even the OTHER place they decied to hunt... Unless fence hunting is your thing...
