Politicians making decisions reguarding the environment/hunting is not and will NEVER be a good idea. It won't be long before they make some real bad idea's a reality...look at NJ, or California for an idea of the future here in NY.5 points

I'm informed that the NYS Teachers Union will not endorse emperor Andy in the next election. After crapping on all of the union State employees I doubt he will be endorsed by them as well. The hard part will be making him look weak in the NYC region. They love him down there. Our votes up here mean absolutely nothing without the NYC vote.3 points

Found a great pond loaded with monsters...only problem is it was when I was with my golf team on a swanky westcheter club. Images of the robertsons from duck commander and the cops running thru my mind. Asking for permission for something like frog gigging is like asking for the first born child of the clubs president-2 points

NY is so misguided. Instead of season structures and tag allocations to adhere to sound management philosophies, they consider something they've come out and stated isn't necessary from a biological standpoint. I understand desire for trophy bucks, but the other biologically superior regs. will do that and not remove choice, so to speak, as A/R does and always will.2 points
-
JJB. if they had land big enough to hold the deer and had control over the ones hunting there they wouldn't need regulations for AR. They would be self imposed and no need for legislation.2 points

Just a couple points. If you are starting at a 6 point next year, givine your method, does that mean the biggest buch you have taken to date is a 4 or 5 point? On the genetics. passing or taking a small racked buck will do nothing to the gene pool of a free ranging wild herd. The racks of a 1.5 year old is no indication of it's potential. it could have been a late dropped fawn. nutrition? there are many reasons the first rack can be small. You can have the best genetic rack buck in the woods doing the breeding and it still only contributes half the make up of the following years offspring. the doe contributes the other half and there is really no visible indicators of what they will be tossing into the pot. The one thing that will produce the best results for heftier deer and bigger racked bucks and that is age. The best genes in the world will do nothing if they are taken at 1.5. That said I agree with WNY that education my preferred avenue rather than a mandate of AR's. I hate to see it expanded and I still don't understand why they are needed. If what the the proponents say, "the majority support it", then why is it needed? Talk about peer pressure. How about DEC puts out a listing of hunters and what they take each year. ---Joe Smith got a 5 point with his bow and a 8 point with his gun and 2 does fawns wit the ML.2 points

NY has never been a deer management state and going about it with just AR is the wrong approach. It all depends on their agenda? Which I'm not sure really what it is?2 points

I still cannot fathom why AR is necessary. If it is not necessary, it should not be a law/regulation.2 points

There is something about continually restricting the harvests that we find acceptable that kind of bothers me. It seems that everytime this subject comes up many are trying to impress everyone else by saying how strict their rules of acceptance are. They also intend to impress with statements that support even further restrictions that everyone else must abide by. I know that everyone has their own reasons and standards for their hunting, and I feel real uncomfortable trying to get laws passed that would force my beliefs on others. In this day of shrinking hunter populations, I really wonder about the advisability of harrassing the hunters that we still have. That harrassment can come either through new restrictive laws, or the constant harping, and criticizing, and measuring, and negative comments, about the harvest that other have chosen. My position is to congratulate a hunter that has taken a deer ..... big doe, little doe, big buck or small buck. I take no pleasure in watching his smile of pride disappear as I criticize the animal that he has chosen to taken. Maybe others don't have that same attitude and enjoy playing the role of the spoiler. Maybe it makes them feel better to draw comparisons between what they take and what other choose to take, I don't know. But as far as I am concerned, I will set my own limits and standards, and it doesn't bother me that others do the same. And I don't feel that I really need any new laws to force others to believe the way I do.1 point

There are some impact differences - assuming that the button is merely a YOY and the 8 is 1.5, 2.5, etc. The button is statistically less likely to survive winter and the 8 is likely more proficient at breeding. A better statement would be a 1.5 4 point and a 1.5 6 pt.1 point
-
Good, for those that it wouldn't impact, they still get their deer and are out of the woods and only take one from the pool. Others, it'll make the trigger a bit more difficult to pull. Best of both worlds, imo.1 point

I see that the polls show that something like 60% were in favor of AR's......I'm guessing that is 60% of hunter's polled, not 60% of hunter's overall, I know that I was never contacted when they were conducting this survey, was anyone else not sent a ballot? I did send off an email with my feeling's about AR's, but who know's if they even take the time to read them.1 point

I'll be out! Nothing like slopping around late at night with some friends for a fun catch! We use our hands which makes it more of a challenge and even more fun if its possible!1 point

Adding to what Doc said, there seems to be a trend or movement of late regarding conservation, self-sufficiency, and food. Examples of recent trends: 1. Paleo-diet 2. Barefoot running 3. Survival shows such as Man versus Wild, Survivor Man, etc. 4. Disasters prep shows such as Doomsday Preppers. 5. The growing fascination with zombie movies/shows and threat of a zombie apocalypse. The last one might seem like a joke but in all seriousness, it did cause some people to reflect on their own self-sustainability. A highly successful banker friend of mine told me once that he regrets his profession since if civilization broke down and money is no longer valued, he couldn't do anything of value. Not even fix a car. I think stuff like that is more on peoples minds now than 5 or 10 years ago.1 point

Its called the easy way out. From my experiences of talking to people about the subject and watching the debating in forums, etc, it seems like the people that push it the most are the people that dont seem to have the self control to pass on younger deer without a law in place. They also usually are the same people that are not educated in the different ways to tell a younger deer from an older one, so they rely on an obvious, but pretty unreliable way to guess, number of points. Again, these are my observations and I dont feel that everyone that is pro mandatory ARs is the same.1 point

Make as many children as possible afraid of anything that even looks like a gun, and it will be that much easier to totally ban guns in the future. Im convinced thats the plan. Im waiting for these nut jobs to require kids to wear mittens at school so they can't point their fingers like guns and "traumatize" each other.1 point

Living in an area of unaddressed poaching problems...I say this asking how many sting operations have you read about in much of region 8?..read of lots down state...not to mention the big T word...I have real concerns about AR's if they go to state wide. On the other side of that...being picky about what I shoot and having ppl around us shooting at running deer like they are on a skeet range..it would be a good thing...only if I don't see an increase of the dead abandoned spikes and little guys we see around here.1 point

Sure could use a bit more heat, but so far everything is looking good and progressing in an acceptable rate. I wish I could get out there to take care of some of the weeds before they get to be a problem, but that might be a pretty mucky activity .... lol.1 point

play the wind, if you are a trad bow hunter it is a true must, if you are in a tree stand it also will be a major issue with the deer. I even keep a small piece of dental floss on the string to see if the wind is changing. It sure does help if you want shot that are close.1 point
-
Wind can be your best friend and also worst enemy. It can change in a blink. Set stands for every wind direction and you should see deer. A few ground blinds should be set too, just in case the wind changes direction. If you're planning on hunting that parcel in early season, you should devote a few evenings in late Sept. to glassing from a distance. This is good because the deer will be patternable. Trailcams are great for locating deer, but watching where they come from(beds) and where they're going(food) is the best way. You'll also know which route they're traveling as well as what time they're moving through. You could just pick the correct stand for the wind and sit, but then you're also taking a chance on spooking the deer and leaving human scent. We have a long season, so take your time and make it count!1 point

Yea, there is a lull in the action now. Sure, a few of the old geezers fish <grin> and a few guys are starting to get ready by tuning their bows etc but for the most part guys are just doing family stuff and recouping after a HARD turkey season (ME!) before the night time temps start to dip and the leaves start to change and it's time time start thinking RUT!!1 point

I miss Steve 863..... Bubba also helped to keep things interesting, whether you loved him or hated him...I was truly sorry to see him stop posting.. In my humble, not too intelligent opinion, one of the functions of a forum like this is to provide ENTERTAINMENT for a bunch of folks who share mutual interests, such as hunting , fishing and the outdoors in general.. Sometimes good folks tend to take it a little too SERIOUSLY.....1 point

Looks like I'm in the minority. I think hunting is easy. It doesn't have to be expensive, and you can fill a lot of freezer space in a short time if you're not picky. Finding and keeping a good place to hunt is the hardest part. Is it worth it....? I say yes to that too.1 point
