Ah maybe I should shoot a lighter arrow, I am cautious about broadside shots from the ground when there are two deer sandwiched together for fear of getting two in one shot.2 points

I still want to know how you mount a broadhead to a bowling ball. Also which is better for a Cadillac - mechanical or fixed blade?2 points

It never hurts to ask. I drove past the local farm I hunt, for years. I never stopped to ask permission to hunt it because I had been turned down by other area farmers, so many times in the past I figured I would get the same response. Come to find out the farmer is the father in law of a guy I know. I finally started to hunt it and the place is awesome. Lots of deer and only me and one neighbor hunt it. About 200 + acres.2 points

This segment of the annual KE vs speed thread has been brought to you by... GORILLA TREESTANDS. Because even an ape knows that speed does not increase accuracy. Carry on...2 points

Got the were full. Oh well, I'd rather get denied access than go on land I don't have permission and be "that guy"2 points

Cover and thermals dictate this decision outside of personal comfort. 15-20 is 99% of my set height. I have been as high as 32 feet, and that was necessary but not preferable. Even at 19-20, you start to reach issues with shots 10 yards and in risking single lung hits. If you don't have practice at shooting at that height, you will want to set up for 15-30 yard shots. I've shot some amazingly close deer at 15 ft. If the cover and thermals allow it, then 15 ft, 10 ft, 12, ft. etc. is fine. I have hunted one stand that is between 6-8 ft. and it just clears the cover to shoot...all you need sometimes.2 points

A couple of weeks ago i got a job offer in Indiana - SO LONG NEW YORK. For my celebration I blew off work and went fishing. The 8lb'er was the first fish of the day. The 12lb'er was the largest. All in all we caught 12 fish none under 4 lbs.1 point

If I shot that deer... I would poop my pants and fall out of the treestand. And if I didn't automatically poop my pants I would poop them on purpose just to say I pooped my pants lol. Nice Buck!1 point

The park really does have some enormous deer the park has everything to grow them safety zones the farms around it for food and plenty of places for them to hide. I hope you get that deer this year.1 point

The thing is that technology does NOT improve hunting skills. In fact it usually attempts to replace hunting skills. The trick is to find the stopping place for each individual where they can utilize some level of technology without being crippled by it. That is a decision that each hunter has to make for themselves. That Mathews bow that you use does actually represent one heck of a pile of modern-day technology, and I'll bet one could take a look at the rest of your set-up and spot all kinds of fairly high-tech stuff when compared to what I started out with. I also might mention that the equipment that I started out with represented some monster technological steps past the weapons of history. Consider those high-tech recurves with laminated limbs and with the modern glues and plastics, manufacturing procedures of Fred Bear's early mass produced bows along with that super-duper Dacron bowstring and that Hoyt arrow rest with that plastic finger that was adhered to the bow with double sided tape was the latest thing on the market. I started out with the hottest bow hunting setup that made the ancient bows of the Turks look like true crap. The point is that everybody has to make up their own minds as to where their comfort level is with the technology that belongs in this so-called primitive weapons season called bowseason. I understand what you are saying, and it appears to me that somewhere along the line, we have crossed some invisible line when it comes to bowhunting. But the fact is that no two people really can agree on where that line is. I am beginning to be convinced that there is no such line and never will be. Someone will always be trying to push the envelope until eventually you will not even know how to define the sport anymore.1 point

I would consider the trespassing a clues as to how that qdm effort would work out. I have a friend who has a strict 6pt or better rule on his 100 acre property, he is adjacent to a 400 acre lodge who enforces the same rule it works out well for them, trusting several different neighbors to all adhere to the same rules can be difficult1 point

1 Speed ratchets up the KE the same as extra weight does at close range but looses at longer range. 2 Pass throughs allow for easier tracking, something many have trouble with. 3 Heavier is better in the event of that "perfectly placed arrow" nicking a bone on the way in.1 point
-
So this is our fps vs Ke annual discussion? There is not a "one size fits all" when choosing an arrow's size, weight or material. WNYBH - Can't I also conversly say more Ke is a little "over-kill" for a whitetail? So don't fall into the male ego trap of thinking bigger is always better. Accuracy, isn't that in the hand's of the shooter? Like a lot of others have eluded to, shot placement is paramount, regardless of what size/wgt of the arrow. SO - Whatever arrow you're comfortable with and consistent in shooting, won't you end up making a better shot in the moment of truth? Yes - No? IF - You do make a good shot (placement) and the arrow only goes in 1/2 way, but has the blender effect as the deer trots off. How is that any worse or better than "pile driving" an arrow to eventually having a pass-thru??? It is basically a cut-on-contact style of hunting, so if your arrow punctures both lungs, who cares if it is still in the deer or in the ground behind it..? Think most will admit there are positives and negatives for both sides of the arguement of faster vs heavier. Doesn't it basically come down to personal preference..?1 point

Jumping the string happens far more often when a deer is already on alert. I don't shoot at deer that are on alert for that reason.1 point

Guns and bows have nothing to do with one another, guns kill force, bows kill by cutting. Again tell me how a faster arrow will be any more accurate than a slower one.1 point

I'm not exactly an expert in the bacteria myself, but being exposed to it in the aquarium hobby, I know a little more about it and wanted to clear up any misconceptions. The bacteria, like most algae thrives in certain conditions, mostly strong sunlight and stagnant waters. Once established, its very hard to remove, as there isn't a fish that would touch it. At least with a true algae, it produces O2 for fish during daylight hours, but BGA only consumes. Some lakes get read bad with it and starts to float instead of adhering to the bottom. One can find as much info as they desire by searching for the correct terms in Google and visiting planted tank forums, such as theplantedtank.com. Blue green algae, BGA, bacteria algae, etc.1 point

The writer used a lot of words. Let me condense it for every one, you want to shoot the proper spine arrow in the heaviest GPI you can find and afford in a hunting set up. Mine are 13.6 GPI pushed by 70# with a 29 inch draw. Back in the day of alluminum no one had to worry about GPI because they were all heavy, lol.1 point

From the article: Love these lame analogies. A bowling ball weighs 16 lbs - a baseball 5.25 ounces. 48 times more. Are comparing a 325 gr arrow to one weighing 15,600 gr? The basketball and Cadillac is even more ridiculous - weight difference is times 1000's. Anyone want to be in front of a baseball doing 480 mph? Or better yet, a basketball going 1000+ mph?1 point

An arrow with a good sharp tip on it and plenty of practice, that is about as technical as I need to get. Why must we always over complicate everything.1 point
-
Blue green algae is not really an algae at all, it's bacteria that uses sunlight. Just wanted to clear that up. In the aquarium hobby, one cannot treat blue green like it was a plant. It occurs both in salt and freshwater.1 point

Couple of fatties right there! If you had caught that 12lb'er durring one of the tourneys, you could have spent the rest of the month fishing! Good luck with the re-location.......I'm sure the Indiana forums are just as entertaining.., and informational as this one!1 point

Principles of Bowhunting | Ethics | Rules of Fair Chase | Club's Position Statements | Equipment Definitions Crossbow Policy Statement The Pope and Young Club was founded to promote bowhunting and to record for posterity the outstanding examples of North American big game animals taken solely with the hunting bow. For the purpose of the Pope and Young Club, a bow shall be defined as a longbow, recurve bow or compound bow that is hand-held and hand-drawn, and that has no mechanical device to enable the hunter to lock the bow at full or partial draw. Other than the energy stored by the drawn bow, no device to propel the arrow will be permitted. Consequently, the Pope and Young Club does not consider the crossbow to be a hunting bow and will not accept any trophies collected by crossbow hunters. Further, the Pope and Young Club considers the use of crossbows during bowhunting seasons to be a serious threat to the future of bowhunting. The Pope and Young Club therefore recommends the crossbow should not be considered for use in any bowhunting only season. Also, the Club strongly recommends that crossbow hunting be abolished from all existing bowhunting only seasons and the use of crossbows for hunting be restricted to firearms seasons.1 point
