  1. There's nothing wrong with taking a doe. I also think if a hunter only hunts during rifle and can't get doe permits there's nothing wrong with taking a smaller buck but with the AR's now that's a thing of the past. My first deer was a spike with my bow and it was a wonderful experience. I learned how to track, field dress, skin and butcher all with that first buck. I still have the skull cap on my wall, while it's not my biggest by a long shot it's still one of my favorite and best trophies on my wall. I just want every hunter to be able to have that is all.

  2. I totally agree with you. I think it's a good thing for a hunter to take a deer to keep their real world skills keen. Taking a smaller buck is a great way to do that. Targets and decoys only get you so far. It's having a living breathing target in your sights that really gets your blood and adrenaline pumping making you do crazy things that a target just can't duplicate. Bowhunting really lets a hunter experience those things and it gives a hunter a chance to fill his/her tag and still have another opportunity to get another deer. Not to get off topic here but that's why I have a problem with mandatory AR's. It can deny some hunters that chance to gain important experience with taking a smaller buck who want to. And Yes IMO it does make it easier to pass on a buck if you have some deer under your belt already.

  3. I have a 15' ladder stand from Dick's, been using it for years but I never liked the permanent steel seat. It is cold and so I bring a pad to sit on and when you are standing the seat keeps you away from the tree and I like to lean against the tree to break up my form. So with the help of a friend who can weld, I cut off the seat and welded it to the floor platform and made a fold up padded seat. It works great and makes the stand so much more comfortable and now I can stand and hug the tree, best of both worlds.

  4. red squirrels are the worst! A close second is other hunters on their cell phone. 2 bow seasons ago in Allegeny state park,I snuck in my tree before sunrise, on stand for 30 min, then hear a phone ring. Then hear someone say "hello?" Apparently, it was vince calling, and wondered where this dumb ass was hunting. DA reported he was all alone, no deer (really???) and they discussed several topics, including where to hunt that evening, and which bar to hit afterwards. That was when I called out " shut the hell up, say bye to vinny" Got quiet after that, never did see the guy.

  5. Its that time again! This is our fourth year for doing this thread and its always a lot of fun! Post in this thread using your smart phone (or other device you can get to the internet with) from your stand / woods with your thoughts, current conditions, pictures, sightings, etc. Don't forget, the site is Tapatalk enabled!

  6. Talk about misleading titles to a thread....lol. Check out any of the links below and you will see that indicating that "Cops May Be Against Your Gun Rights" is just a flat out lie. It's just not right to malign those that are publicly standing staunchly on our side, in favor of gun owner's rights. The following links will show you the truth about where the cops really are on this issue: http://polhudson.lohudblogs.com/2013/04/16/ny-troopers-safe-act-will-significantly-increase-the-hazards-of-an-already-dangerous-job/ http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2013/04/nys_troopers_have_widely_share.html http://blog.timesunion.com/capitol/archives/185401/albany-police-union-blasts-safe-act-as-foolish-unconstitutional/ http://www.humanevents.com/2013/05/24/empire-state-sheriffs-cuomo-showdown/ http://www.oneidadispatch.com/articles/2013/05/18/news/doc51980d8aa59e1663335523.txt http://gunssavelives.net/blog/gun-laws/breaking-ny-sheriffs-association-joins-lawsuit-fighting-ny-safe-act-laws/# http://www.nysheriffs.org/articles/sheriffs%E2%80%99-response-ny-safe-act Etc., Etc., Etc.

  8. i agree with everthing people have posted as its my own experiance as well. i just wonder how many hunters out out there touting ar's passing up deer and have little or no experiance and are missing the enjoyment and growth i've experianced myself. and do not know what they are missing... there is more to hunting to experiance than the size of a rack,or i should say worring about the size of a rack.

  9. I cannot do a live from the stand because I have a dumb phone. But here is a pic from my ground blind this morning. I saw one lone dry doe at 40 yards but couldn't get a clear shot.

  11. Hasenpfeffer and eggs its called. Hase is German for 'hare' and Pfeffer is German for '(black) pepper There are a number of ways to cook it with a bunch of spices and all but I keep it simple and use the natural flavors of the animal

  12. This being my first year with the bow I'm thinking taking a Doe would satisfy the need to "get one under my belt" , after that I'll be looking for a decent buck !

  16. I got to the point I wouldn't shoot a buck with the bow unless it was to the ears or wider. After no success for a number of yrs I lost my confidence. It had been so long since I shot one with the bow I felt like I was starting all over. I'll never forget the droptine buck that I drew on 3 times by my stand opening day one yr, I was so out of touch shooting a live target I kept waiting for the perfect shot as he walked by me three times and finally up the hill with two does and another decent buck. Finally I decided to start with a doe. After putting a perfect shot on her I started to rebuild my confidence. Then came the 7pt that only ran 50yrs, now I was feeling good. Then the following yr when the 120inch 8pt offered me a 12yrd shot he ran about 5 steps, stood there and dropped. I still will wait for a big buck but I would rather take a doe with the bow vs the gun to help keep my confidence for the big guy!!

  18. last year I got my wall mount. the 2 seasons prior I passed on everything that I didnt think would look good on my wall. even passed on the doe's. if you dont shoot there is always a chance you wont get a thing. but if you fill your tag too soon there is that chance that a bigger buck will come out after or in the next few days..... Hunting is a game of chance. you can do things to improve your odds (scouting trail cams etcc) but at the end of the day their is no guarentee. Whether you get a big buck or not it is always an excellent experience in my opinion. For people just starting out Definitely a growth step. Getting a few under your belt is a good idea. it keeps the itch itchy for years to come.

  24. The study I pointed to came from MSU. You talk about anger and look who is using swear words not once, but twice on a public forum with minors on it. That goes a long way into showcasing your character qualities when someone places an argument against your opinion, and quite frankly you should be ashamed of yourself for stooping to such a level.I don't care how old you are, or how long you want to spout off about being some pioneer. Your belief system isn't universally held and it appears to rub you the wrong way. My research on the topic led to my work on AR being published in NY Game and Fish, so trust me when I say I'm not pretending or making up where I am coming from. You aren't the only one with a background. AR has fatal flaws as I mentioned - its not a quality option for public mandate and private owners are much better off with age restrictions. The safe act isnt a hunting legislation? Ask turkey hunters and deer hunters in rifle country. But again, you asked for legislation that made hunting worse...duh. not being able to use certain guns or obtain certain guns that were used for hunting last season...sheesh doesn't seem relevant does it? Fact DECALS was a mistake. I broke the story about decals having a fatal flaw while discussing it with the Dec person in cbarge of its third party acquisition. Fact...the pheasant facility was darn near shuttered. I could go on, but I don't want you to sink even lower with more anger filled swearing tirades because the world doesn't revolve around your belief system.

  25. Before asking for any raise, you did say that this is a family business. By any chance is this a business you want to really stay with and possibly take over? If so it may be best to just keep quiet for now. It has been my experience that family businesses usually take care of their "outside" employees first by that I mean non-family members with the idea that one day the family business will eventually be yours when dad and grandpa retire.

  26. A few things to think about... 1) I get paid for the amount of gas I spend on travel expenses and IF you use your personal vehicle you should have some compensation for that. Company vehicle you should get reimbursed for your gas, save the receipt. I get 400$ a month for vehicle use plus gas receipts... I use my own truck... 2) When asking for a raise these are some of the things you need to make your point, NOT everyone is making what I make, I need more... a: Your value to the company: How efficiently you perform your job, handle co-workers and the customers- No one can do what you do as well as you do it!!! b: How much you have improved since your last raise. c: Economy and rising cost of living and expenses d: Even though it is a family company, act as an employee asking for a raise not a son or grandson c: Treat your boss/coworkers and above all customers with respect even if the person is out of control you will rise to the top... e: Do not ever say you will work harder if you get a raise, let them know you are working as hard as you can and are willing to improve and work on anything the boss feels is your week points... f: Be confident in your ability and the fact that you are worth every penny they pay you. g: Work hard, come in early and stay late when ever needed Confidence in your skills and your value to the company that you give should be rewarded. I hope you get a fat raise(If you do keep it to yourself, no one but you and the boss need to know what you make...) Be confident and list the things that you give to the company value as an employee and you should be ok. Good luck hope everything work out for you!!!

  30. Crows......When Sandy hit last year all you heard day in and day out were generators. I got up to camp and thought opening morning would be so peaceful and quite in the woods, nope! The camp down the road didn't turn off their generator until early afternoon, thought I was going to be sick.....lol

  32. Generally I plunge my face into the opened up body cavity and bite out the liver and then standing over the deer, I have my picture taken with the liver dangling out of both sides of my mouth and blood from the body cavity covering my face. While the picture is being taken, I give out a primal yell. It's just a statement of conquest. ......Well, maybe that was just something I imagined doing.... lol.

  34. I think the only difference between then and now is this. Now that can't mandate they work and if they do I remember reading they have to be paid to do it. I Think they should be forced to work and lern a skill that better sets them up for when they are returned to society. Doesn't make sense to me to keep them in there and turn them out with the same of worse ability to provide for themselves. I don't have an issue with the accomodations or food Sheriff Joe is using. They are not owed a specif menu. There should be a basic nutritional value that needs to be met and that is it.

  39. Moose hunts are a very interesting and rewarding style of hunt to do. Been there.....done that. I will likely never hunt moose in what's left of my lifetime, and if you want a good moose hunt, it is helpful to do it in an area where moose are plentiful. I never was all that enthused about trying for moose tags, but I have had some very good hunts in Ontario Canada where tags through an outfitter were guaranteed.

  41. I have to admit, I feel stupid bringing it up to people sometimes, as I know it was my own fault and 100% preventable. Kind of like people getting hurt in an auto accident that didn't have their seatbelt on! Well, DUHHH!! I sat with my daughter through her hunters safety course and felt like crawling under the table when the instructor brought up the importance of wearing a safety harness while hunting from a stand! I should have spoken up, as I might have saved someones life someday, but I just hung my head feeling like a dumb ass. I guess, I just hope I can save someone on the forum from going through what I (and my family) have gone through, because of my negligence stupidity. My daily pain reminds me of it and that it could have been MUCH MUCH worse... Ya' know, I might just talk to some hunter and bow hunter safety instructors in the area, tell them my story, and offer to share with their classes, if they would like. Something I could do to give back and maybe save a life, if their parents don't have sense enough to get the kids safety harnesses on their own or even if a new adult hunter that is unfamiliar with them.

  42. I have taken the ultimate precaution. I hunt from the ground .... lol. But in all honesty I have to admit that it really is not due to a fear of falling. I simply have that psychological "heights" thing. Vertigo I believe it is called. However, in the last 20 years or so since I have come down of of the trees, I will say that I haven't missed it a bit. The handicap of facing the critters on the ground, face-to-face really hasn't been all that noticeable. I know a lot of people can't even fathom hunting deer from the ground, but having done both, I will tell you there is no more exciting way to hunt.
