So after doing a ton of research and looking around, I decided that a side by side would suit my needs a bit better than a regular wheeler. I have kids, and they love to go do work on the farm and stuff. Putting them on a wheeler is ok, but not very safe or comfortable. I looked around at all of the side by sides out there, and ended up with the Viking and the John Deere Gator 825i as the two to choose between. The Gator is an outsanding machine, with the best options of any side by side IMO, but the price is just too much for me to justify. The Viking, while shorter in capacities and features, does have everything I need, is more fun to drive, and the best part, has 3 legit seats. All seats have seatbelts, hand holds and seperate foot wells, you arent just squeezing someone in. Driving this thing is just plain fun, its a 700cc fuel injected engine out of the Raptor sport quad. It has 4 wheel drive, and a diff lock mode. It uses the same style 2 stage belt drive as the JD. I also ordered a 3000lb Warn winch and 72" plow for the driveway, which will be in within the next couple of weeks. I plan to add an electrical plug for the rear to feed accessories like a sprayer and spreader. Heres a few pics2 points

My good friend shot this bruiser this week in Alberta. They tried to weigh him but he bottomed out the 500lb limit scale they had. He will have the skull scored after the required drying period. The guides told him that he may be a new Alberta record. I will update this post after the skull is scored.2 points

today should have been the day... had 1 gobbling his head off from 5:05 AM, I worked him and his hens till 9. at one time I had the gun on him and the safety off but I couldn't see his beard and I didn't want to shoot a Jake. He was less than 40yds. . had to move on him 3 times..did everything but kill that bird... great hunt. Hope to try it again tomorrow.2 points

I thought it would be more interesting to share a video than to post "I killed a nice long beard today". Even though it was not the best video out there, I enjoyed filming it and editing it. I am new to video taping but old to turkey hunting. Enjoy your season.2 points

Keep doing the same things and getting the same results ensures failure. The two party system in NY and for the most part in the country has failed us. Why? Because even when you win your losing.2 points

Picked up the rug today, came out good. Also looked up the 2013 bear take from the DEC stats. and she was the only bear taken in the town I hunt and was 1 of only 8 taken for all of Otsego county. Find myself very fortunate to harvest this huge sow , she went 260lbs. Now just waiting patiently for DEC to send me her age. Here's a picture of her laid out on grass then up on wall.1 point

Mourning doves are the number one game animal in the USA. Despite this, there are eight lower contiguous states that do not allow dove hunting. Dove legislation has been introduced in NY since at least 1990, possibly longer. According to the DEC’s website a number of dove bills have been introduced over the years; however not a single dove bill has ever been moved forward for vote. Based on the responses the DEC received to three dove hunting -related questions included as part of a larger survey of small game hunters; the DEC speculates that NY hunters do not have experience with dove hunting and therefore have not generated enough political support for dove hunting. Lawmakers offer a similar perspective which resonates with that of the DEC. According to one high ranking state senator his office receives many letters and/or petitions opposing dove hunting and very seldom hears from anyone who supports dove hunting. This same senator was convinced by anti-hunters who have contacted him, that doves were not edible. We have created an online presence using email newsletters, a website, two Facebook pages, a YouTube channel, and two Google Plus pages. The purpose of these online presences is to inform policy makers, build political support for dove hunting, engage & organize aspiring dove hunters and encourage ethical hunting practices, attitudes and behaviors. The link to the NY Dove Hunting website is www.NYDoveHunting.weebly.com. From there; you can go to our Facebook, YouTube and Google Plus pages. A focused and factually correct response from sportsmen to lawmakers, newspapers and the DEC can drive the establishment of a mourning dove hunting season. Our online articles provide talking points so that sportsmen can address the controversy surrounding dove hunting in a focused and factually accurate manner. NY Dove Hunting also aims to interest hunters and aspiring hunters in dove hunting. NY Dove Hunting also functions to organize, engage and keep hunters informed about dove hunting initiatives. To accomplish these functions, we need sportsmen to join our network by liking our Facebook pages and subscribing to our YouTube Channel.1 point

http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2014/05/poll_half_of_ny_voters_disapprove_of_cuomos_handling_of_gun_policy.html#incart_river_default still think we are fighting a losing battle? A month ago they said that the Unsafe act had a 62 percent approval. Now down to 50 percent. Keep fighting the good fight and we will win. ow is the time to push even harder.1 point

Well, let me put it this way..... It isn't me that turning tail and running away from the responsibilities that you listed. So just who is it that lacks stamina? Well, we know one of us has already admitted a lack of fortitude and it isn't me.1 point

I watched it, congrats on the kill. I don't understand how that can be too exciting, sitting in a blind and hoping a gobbler will come in as apposed to being in the woods, locating a bird and outsmarting him with woods sense. Outwitting a gobbler with your back to a tree, camo mask blurring your vision, black flies and mosquitoes buzzing, dry mouthing a diaphragm call, fumbling for your box, losing your striker for the slate call, having to figure out the best position for the gun in anticipation of his arrival, knowing when and when not to call, move your location etc. is what is about to me. YMMV and obviously it does. I'm sure it is still exciting to have the bird coming but silent (or darn near silent) gobblers don't interest me at all. I'll walk and try and locate a vocal gobbler, maybe even blast a crow call or two................then a quiet subtle hen call with the diaphragm then maybe, just maybe a loud blast on the box call. Nothing? Move on............ That's the way I learned from guys like Ben Rogers Lee, Dick Kirby, Paul Butski, John McDaniel etc. Maybe those fellas that are still alive of the group are hunting out of blinds these days? I don't know...... I'd guess the people that started hunting with blinds were bow hunters; guys that were trying to kill one of the most difficult animals to outsmart in the open woods. Hiding behind a tree, drawing the bow and making a PERFECT shot on a spring gobbler has to be the ultimate hunt east of the Mississippi. The blind and decoys changed that. I guess like all of life, somebody figures out an easier way to skin that cat and we all have to decide if thats the path or method we want to use. Nice bird Dr Honk, how are you preparing him?1 point

Well, it's been a while since I was still hunting for myself this late in the season. The last few years I've been averaging a bird for every two days hunted, but it's been fun to have a longer season too. A few days ago I had this bird and his buddy at 60 yards in an open field at about 9:00 but they had a hen with them and I couldn't get them any closer. This morning I slipped in under their roost and got it done nice and early. It was about 4:15 when I parked, and there were distant flashes of lightning to the north and south, thankfully though the storms stayed away. The spot where the birds roost is just off the back of a plowed field, they usually hit the ground just inside the edge in a nice open piece of hardwoods and then make their way to the field. I set some decoys out in the field and then got set up about eight steps inside the woods facing away from the field and toward where I expected the birds to be. I figured I would either get a shot at them when they hit their strutting area or I could turn around and shoot them in the decoys if they made it past me (or flew out into the field). I didn't have long to wait before I heard the first hen start calling, she sounded like she was inside 30 yards up in her tree. I answered with a few soft yelps, pretty much just to be able to say I had called. Within a few minutes both gobblers joined in as well. At about 5:20 they both flew down and this one landed within range. The dot on my Fastfire was already on his head when his feet hit the ground and a load of HW7's ended both my morning and season. 18lbs, 10" beard, 15/16" spurs My view looking into the woods from where I was sitting, the field with my decoys is to my back. The bird landed right in the middle of this clearing. Lots of sign out in the field.1 point

Hudson Valley Psychiatric Center, Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center, Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center are just 3 of the institutions that have shut down over the years, thanks to the politicians' budget cuts...and those are just the ones I know of in NY. These facilities are where the people who go on shooting rampages would have gotten the help they needed before a tragedy occurs. A prescription for anti depressants, etc. just doesn't give them the care and long term help they need. Instead of putting tax dollars into gun control the money should be going into getting more of these centers and making them top notch facilities with the best doctors. My prayers and condolences to all the victims and their families.1 point

Seems to me that people were just commenting on how the media, and other antis will use this tragedy to push their agenda, just like they have done time after time after time. You are correct. People started searching for anti gun stuff on this incident. And it was there. No surprise.1 point

Boy, you really are on a tear....lol. For a guy that claims to hate all the non-hunting threads on this site, you sure do seem to spend a lot of time involved in them. But in case you seriously cannot see the difference, let me explain to you that there is a huge difference between using tragedy to further a personal agenda, and predicting that use by the anti-gun forces.1 point

I'm glad they said a spring bear season would fit their strategy and they will be considering it in the future. I think that's the best way to increase the number of bear hunters in the state.1 point

Gorgeous morning in 9H but no gobbles yet on my mountain. 3 quick shots across road and other mountain. Just heard gobble over there about a mile away. Sharing the woods with my 11 year old daughter who currently is sleeping against our tree : )1 point

All I can say is that anyone who has not heard gobblers gobble at crow calls, owl hoots, or gunshots hasn't done much turkey hunting. The bird I killed a week ago today gobbled at 2 gunshots and several crows in the time that I was working him. I also have heard several birds gobble at barred owl hoots this spring.1 point

Sweet machine! Lots of cup holders too..., not that that had anything to do with the final decision! Does it have on-star and sattlelight radio?1 point

I'd be more than happy to sit in the woods and "waste" some time in September looking for a bear........the amount of time I've spend hunting not seeing anything I could shoot is far greater than the amount of time that I've actually had shot opportunities..........and I don't see the bear populations anywhere near the levels that would yet NEED baiting to control the population.......one step at a time.1 point

Well the 23lb bird with 1 3/8" spurs that I shot this year is near the top of my list, but my biggest typical bird was 24lbs, 1 1/2" spurs, and 10 1/4" beard. My highest overall scoring bird is this triple beard. 20lbs, 1 1/8" and 1" spurs, 11 1/8", 9 1/2" and 8 1/2" beards.1 point

I think it is helpful to keep in mind that when turkeys gobble at noises like guns shots and slamming doors that it doesn't mean the birds are not alarmed. They very likely gobble to keep the flock together or facilitate regrouping after scattering. The reason toms gobble at other kinds of birds is probably territory disputes. The male turkey gobbles to claim territory and attract mates, the woodpecker hammers, and a bunch of other kinds of male birds sing. Just a guess, but there might be extra incentive for toms to challenge crows and owls if hens in the egg laying mode take cover when they are around; because that would disrupt the tom's "agenda"...1 point

When the birds are responding to locaters why not use them. But sounding them for 7 hours when the birds are not answering isn't the answer. Some hunters come in, hoot call, move, hoot call, and repeat from like 6:30 to 7 am and then leave - I am not saying do that type of brief hunt to avoid a 7 hour sit, I am saying they are out there alerting the birds during prime time and keeping them on their toes for days... You cant expect youth weekend or opening day birds on May 10 or even May 5. Pressured birds are an entirely different ball game.1 point

Sometimes it is almost like that, a crow and/or other birds goes off and turkeys try to be louder - like its a shouting match, and that can go on for some time. By the same token, as I said, when they are afraid to gobble they wont.1 point

My brother in law got a jake this am also OK heres the story now that I am done with cleaning the bird and doing a few things around the house.Got to the farm at 5am,loaded up and headed out.The night before we saw 2 birds heading into the block of woods but didn't see where they went after they went in and it was an hour before sundown so I know they would be in a different roost. My friend wanted to sit right where the birds went in so I went over to were I figure they roosted.I was within 30 yards of where I wanted to sit when a one gobbled on the roost,I knew I was going to be in the right spot!! I got under a big cherry and started to clear the leaves when a big flock busted 20 yards to my left.I thought that was it the birds are gone,so I settled in for the long sit. After 15 minutes I heard a gobble so I knew he was still there.I let out a few purrs and watched him fly down from the roost at 625,he and another the same size came strutting in and when they hit the 40 yard mark I let him have it.The other just sat there like he had a "WTF" look on him.,not moving just a few clucks. He was down for the count so I just watched his buddy and hoped he would run by my friend. No such luck so that ended my day.Now its my daughters turn, she wanted to spend the night at a friends and she is regretting that!!!!LOL1 point
