It's the off season. It's cold, you can't hunt much and most of us have cabin fever like crazy. So I figured I'd put up a little whitetail story to help scratch that itch. I'm a waterfowl guy through and through, but this is one I havent shared and it's my first buck which makes it that much sweeter. Nov 17th 2013 The day before the hunt I ended up getting stuck at work late. I worked until about 4 in the morning which gave me the next day off. I wasn't too tired when I got home and we had just gotten a fresh coat of snow. It was a beautiful morning and I only had a few hours until daylight so I figured I'd take my morning nap against a tree. I suited up and got to my spot just as the sun was cresting the horizon. I sat there for a few minutes just taking it all in and made a quick phone call I had to make (I know not the place to do it). I hang up the phone and as I'm sliding it into my jacket pocket I catch some brown about 150 yards out that dissapears behind a knoll. So I turn to my right and make a crawl about 20 yards to higher ground. I see it's a doe and I have a doe tag so I pull my father's BLR up and get her in the crosshairs. She's at about 100 yards at this point and headed my way so I was in no rush to pull the trigger. Plus it's Nov. 17th, I'd be an idiot to rush a shot on a lone doe headed my way. As i'm watching her through the scope I catch more movement behind her. Heart starts going. It's a yearly. Then instantly more movement. I can see horn now. It was like he showed up in the open timber out of nowhere. I instantly switch to him. As I do that he turns and begins to walk down the deer run i'm sitting on, right towards me. He covered the next 60 yards with a tree directly between his main beems. Now he's at about 40 yards and keep in mind I'm on one knee using a 2" sapling as a rest, I'm not very covered. Finally he clears that tree and is standing there facing directly at me. I put the crosshairs on his chest and pull the trigger... CLICK... The freaking gun doesn't go off!! Now he's looking directly at me but from some act of god doesn't decide to bolt quite yet. Instinct kicks in and I barely remember doing it but I cycled the lever and let her fly. I look up from the scope and he's already done a 180 and is headed down the hill. I watched him fall at 100 yards. Now that has been my fathers gun for years and years. He's killed MANY deer with that firearm and has never had a single malfunction. I'm not sure if it was a dud round or just the deer gods testing me but looking back I'm glad it happened. Makes the story that much more interesting.6 points

Every hunter has a story about a deer that for whatever the reason never got shot at. And lives in our minds, still wondering, what if.... In the early 90s my buddy who owns the farm we hunt, kept telling me all summer and fall of this huge wide racked buck. I never saw him during that time when I helped out putting in hay. Now it's near the end of bow season and my buddy shoots a real nice buck and I am just not seeing any bucks at all and that is very strange for this property. He has been seeing multiple bucks most every time out. And he keeps telling me about this "really wide 10 point" and to stay out there. Bow season ended and now it's the first weekend of gun. And I decide to hunt this upper woodlot that is mostly open hardwoods heading down hill. As I'm coming in from the top I see a doe and two smaller bucks down below me. they are moving from my left to right about 100 yards away but I have no clear shot. So I start moving to my right looking down hill and find an opening. And waiting for the deer to hit the opening I hear a slight noise behind me and up to my right. I turn and look over my shoulder and there looking right at me is that "really wide 10 point". My gun is pointing almost 180 degrees away from this buck and we are staring at each other and I know if I move at all he is going to be gone. So I start in SLOW motion turning to get a shot. At the same time one of the deer below blows. The big buck spins around and is running away with a tree directly between us as I watch him run over the top of the hill. I never forgot the sight of that "really wide 10 point" going over the top without a shot being fired. What if.....2 points

had a couple when I was a young kid but nothing to that big. probably a shorter tined, 17" wide, 7 pointer was the biggest. had a 100" 6 pointer my cousin ended up getting. to far in the woods and just over the bank to get a shot. he shot that within 15 minutes of it passing by me. bigger have gotten away from me but I took them later in the season. hunting out in northwest OK I watched a bedded 140" buck out in the middle of a field from a spotting scope tagged out several hundred yards away with a friend in a blind at the field edge. it got away. saw a big one jumping through a CRP field in KS that was very huge but I wasn't there to hunt.2 points

Condemning and committing troops different all together. Some just talk the talk so their foreign aid(our taxdollars) keeps flowing while others such as Hezbollah, Taliban, Irans Quds force etc just want to take over and enforce their own sick ideology..2 points

The U.S. government, which has "Tomahawk" cruise missiles, and "Apache," "Blackhawk," 'Kiowa" and "Lakota' helicopters - and used the code name "Geronimo" in the attack that killed Osama bin Laden, officially objects to the name of the Washington Redskins. Really?1 point
-
You do know the term 'Redskin' is a slur, while the other things are objects, tribe names or people, right? To parallel your example, to name something Pizza, Napolidan, Roman, Sicilian, Venetian or Columbus is fine, however, WOP or Grease-ball would be offensive.1 point

Not a deer, but a mt lion in Arizona. 1st day ever hunting them. Ended up getting a a nice Tom on Halloween day 11 and several months later. But I always think think back on this big one. Below is from my Feb 2012 post: Day 1 = In the afternoon, we decided to try for a 5 ½ - 6 year old (130-150lbs) Tom that would have made the Arizona state record books (14” skull minimum). After a very tough 10-12 miles on foot (4K-9K elevation), we ran out of light before catching up to the big Tom. Track probably was 2 nights old and not 1 night old. Therefore, this lion was much farther away than we initially thought. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

I was making a joke about hipsters (and might as well throw in "lumber sexual" dudes) compared to women. being a woman not a problem. being a dude, acting a little too feminine (trendy and whatever else), while trying to looking like a manly outdoors man.... well that to me is a bit odd. I think you may have took my post the wrong way. connection to hunting is what it is... people of all walks of life can and do hunt. I'd support any right minded individual in their efforts to take up hunting.1 point

Looking at all these deer heads on the wall, it's all about the ones that were " almost" that stick in my mind the most. I wouldn't even know where to begin, LOL.1 point

I find it interesting that I was looking at that exact quote when I was formulating my earlier response to this thread, precisely because Roosevelt was arguably the first to promote a progressive ideology. I can assure you that today's interpretation of "progressive" ideology was not what our earlier presidents had in mind. The subtleties of interpretation have caused great confusion among those who have been appeased and wish to further the current agenda. The poor are taken care of, the wealthy are taken care of, those in the middle who have sided with the current ideology are taken care of. Those who disagree with the ideology are continuously punished, under the guise of regulation, by the bureaucracy that supports that ideology. And that bureaucracy grows stronger every day. Never before in the history of our country have so many consistently voted, albeit subconsciously, in favor of being ruled, as opposed to being governed. Some of us are pi**ed about that and we want our country back.1 point

I'm not a Hillary fan either. Seems to me that it's the right that's more obsessed with her than the left.1 point
-
Her nomination is a given within the party. She has been chosen as heiress to the throne by those who wish to be ruled. Take her out of the equation and the extreme-left socialists (aka the modern progressive democrats) have no candidate. The argument is no longer about Republican vs Democrat in this country. It's about the basic concept of governance vs rule.1 point

funny this is what you post to divert the attention from what she actually did. Sorry Libs, they should hang this washed up broad to dry. By not using the proper email and setting up her own server to hide everything, she should be tossed out of the government. looks like she may be facing felony charges....how crazy ex presidents wife will not even be able to vote soon. Im sure the clown and his appointees will make it all go away. I would be willing to bet all the stupid dems would believe it. Bunch of brainwashed robots. actually it references fox so it must be total BS because never in the history of life has fox said anything true.1 point

CatJunkie Ask yourself this is the world a better place today, after years of Democrap non leadership? Are Americans Safer in & out of Country with a Democrap Administration? It was easy to blame Bush (far from perfect) but Americans was more secure before and after, until the Current administration came along. Your leaders Political career was born in a terrorists Home, his back ground was that of Communist background (Read it) Now Back to Muslim Because of the dismantling in the Middle east due to Direct orders of the Commander in Chief has created a catalyst for Radicals to grow. Ask yourself is anyone else using Religion Killing as away to recruit and grow than Muslims in the name of God. So are all Muslims Bad No, should we be caution of Muslims Yes. I never seen a Baptist or Catholic or Jew take a plane and Crash it into NYC buildings, or cutting off heads, burning people ETC... Or if you don't become of their faith they kill you. So caution should be taken when traveling Why? Muslims that will Harm you because why? Those are Questions that Democraps have made. Oh and Iraq is now becoming Iran, with the help of??? Another thing this is not a Party Thing its an American Thing, Know your Enemy.1 point

Ha....My 2 nieces will sell my rifles to the first lucky schmuck that comes along for 50 bucks each...... Hope its not someone I have on ignore here. Like to have a copy of Osa Johnson's 9.3x62 Mauser to play with and take on a hunt. You can google her....but in short she and her husband did a bunch of filming of safari hunts and exploring in Africa back in the 20's. Husband ran the camera and she did the shooting. They also filmed cannibal tribes in the South Pacific and had a few nasty encounters along the way.1 point

Now, I am not in support of observing these Muslim holidays, but as usual you don't know what you are talking about. NYC public schools observe Christmas, Good Friday, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Are these not religious holidays??1 point

MY daughter just got home tonight from her end of this trip! She spent the last three nights with her fellow classmates in Paris, France. This morning they boarded a plane from Charles de Gaulle airport and were in the air for a little over 8 hrs en-route to the Toronto airport. Then they took a shuttle bus back home. It was a long 2.5 weeks for us but with the phone app called "Whatsapp" and a little "FaceTime" we could keep in touch pretty good. The 6 hour time difference was a problem of course..... They were all over; Rome, Milan, Venice, Innsbruck, Paris and all points in between. She took over 1000 pics with her Iphone....hopefully she weeds out some (MOST) of the lousy ones and prints only the best blue ribbon pics. Funny thing, when all the kids piled off the shuttle bus they fell into their parents arms and lots of hugs and kisses flew. All the kids then congregated at the back of the shuttle to grab their suitcases. Each kid or their parents grabbed the appropriate luggage and then walked off to their cars, no goodbyes at all. I thought that was strange and I said to my daughter. "what gives with that, nobody said goodbye" She said, "ahh, we're all kind of tired of each other"!! She said all was good but they just needed some time apart now! They all are expected to be in school tomorrow morning of course, soon enough to see their buds.1 point
