It was so hectic trying to keep up with helping the kids, netting, reviving and releasing fish that I didn't get many photos. My wife took some. Below is my son yesterday and my daughter last week with grandpa and her silver. Pretty sure my wife has photos of my daughter yesterday but not on my phone: We fish every week but my daughter comes more often than my son. She is more of an outdoor sportsman and deadly with her 15lb recurve at 5 yds. Lol7 points

Took the kids and wife out fishing yesterday with my Dad. Since I wanted more action for the kids (6 and 13yrs old), we targeted lakers. Caught more than I could count in 2 hours including 3 triples. As soon as I set a rigger, it would fire and then the next and next. Kids got tired of reeling them in. Biggest was 14lbs. Definitely not like fighting kings and I know its a "lesser fish", but seeing the kids battle them was about as much fun as I have had fishing. Just when we were ready to start looking for kings, my wife looked a bit green from the sun and rolling water (she tends to get sea sick) so we headed in. Don't discount fishing mid-day. All this action was between 1-3pm.4 points

Just an update on yesterday......... My wife and I thought about going up to see her father in Waterport but with all the heat, humidity and lousy a/c we went to plan B. I sent Pygmy a quick PM and inquired if he and the Mermaid wanted to meet my wife and I down at the Mountain View in Atlanta NY for their family style chicken and biscuits Sunday only dinner. They agreed to go and we set a time of 4PM. Hmmm.......now what are my wife and I going to do on the way???? Well. a friend reminded me of a fine little spot down on the east side of Hemlock Lake (south of the south end), just north of Springwater called Reynolds Gully. It's a series of small waterfalls in ravine with some super steep walls. (you can Google more info) We made it to the spot around 2:00pm or so, made the hike up and had a blast! It is an awesome place to visit, easy 10 minute hike upstream and some gorgeous country to boot. After our hike we took a slow ride down to Atlanta and me up with Dan (Pygmy) & Sis (The Mermaid) at the Mountain View. Dinner was delicious and the company even better, we all left stuffed to the gills! After super Kathy and I headed up north past my uncle's old cabin in Naples, off Garlinghouse Rd. Then we stopped at my friends in Canadice for an after dinner vodka & tonic and a nice Macanudo cigar around the hot tub. (he was in, we weren't!) We made it home shorty after 9pm, fat and happy. The best birthday in years!4 points

I think the real problem is that they fail to see the importance of keeping hunters happy while still doing conservation a good service. Keeping the hunter population up has got to be in the equation... it makes a good management plan possible especially when population control is the goal. The DEC won't get far by pissing off any faction of the hunting population.3 points

They really are two entirely different kinds of hunts and I also like each one for their uniqueness. For me the bowhunting is a solitary kind of hunting that requires some heavy scouting and patterning of a relatively undisturbed deer herd with hopefully there still being a roughly repetitive feeding and bedding routine and some traditional rutting patterns that are again unbroken by excessive hunter activity. The bow is a short range weapon, so that the shooting distances are limited and requires a bit more solace and lack of interference. Gun season gets to be a more social event where friends and family gather for all the strategy B.S. sessions and the time when hunting partners go on joint excursions for stand locating and construction. And there are the pre-season target sessions for those that waited to the last minute to zero in those guns. And then there is the magic of opening day when the woods explodes with activity and all the shooting starts and that super anticipation that the orange army will push that deer in your expanded circle of gun range capability. It is quite exciting and all that stuff has its appeal too. Each form of hunting has its different styles of challenges and their separate kinds of fun and their separate kinds of requirements. And each style has certain aspects that interfere with the other. They were always kept separate because they are separate in all aspects and ways that they are conducted. I like them both, in their proper (and separate) times. Too bad the DEC doesn't have a clue about those differences or even care that there are differences.3 points

Not much I despise more than a scumbag thief. I feel bad for you having to go through this. Been through it myself many years ago. Still makes my blood boil when I think about it or see it happen to someone else. I really hope it works out for you and you get your stuff back. And I hope those rotten SOB's that stole from you die a painful death. And sooner rather than later too!3 points

Gun season is kind of fun in its own way because of that atmosphere. It just has no place in archery. Both seasons represent 2 totally different emotions and goals and strategies for me. It's what I really love about hunting. Just when I'm sick of the stick and string and scent control and deer just out of range, in comes the gun with pumpkins and their 870s in orange jump suits pushing deer right to me. Oh well I guess it'll all blend together soon.3 points

I havent talked to a bow hunter yet that is going to bother hunting the first 15 days this year. I wont be putting all kinds of pressure on my spots so I can let mature deer walk by, bust me and be more spooky for the rest of the season. Back to the old opening season date. In other words, the typical success rate and hunter numbers are going to plummet for two weeks.2 points

Bingo, nyantler.....I wrote about this in the Aug. 21 issue of NY Outdoor News....when hunters are THE management tool they need to be on board with any regulatory move in order to have it be a success....2 points

You can place a trail cam on state land you just need to leave your name address and phone number attached to the tree with the camera.2 points

Bucks in a bachelor group 8/12/15. Starting to pay off by passing on small eights with bow and gun. Many of them will get whacked of course, but that is OK. Makes some other hunter happy! But if they get through to become 3.5 year olds, then they become literally something to shoot for. The small eight gets a free pass this year. If I need the meat, I'll shoot a spike or a yearling or a small doe.2 points

Eddie- It's not whether I can get a doe or even a buck that has me upset. It is simply the stupidity of the change, and the fact that the DEC seems to be going out of their way to single out bowhunters with the responsibility of maintaining deer population management (or else!). Their current attitudes toward bowhunters indicates that they really have a problem with bowhunters occupying some premium season time and intend to change that situation, which of course cannot bode well for anyone who enjoys the change of pace that bowhunting provides. I too have a pile of days to fill the freezer, but still the shoddy treatment and strong-arm tactics being used on bowhunters is pretty irritating to me. And so, I am not ok with it.2 points

I just got my notice the Saratoga gun show is this Week end 8/22&8/23 I need so many little parts and pieces. I am going To have to bring a wheel Barrow.1 point

Is this buck the same one 2 weeks ago, same spot. Im thinking no 2 good ones using the same trail.1 point
-
This is counter productive for me because now I won't hunt 9F until the 15th, and there's a good chance I would take a doe if I did. I never pass up a doe during archery but I can't sit if I have to pass a big buck should one show up.1 point

Hunting from a tree stand has a lot of advantages, but the main one is being able to draw your bow with much less chance of a deer seeing you make the movement to draw and get into position to make a shot. I'll take a tree stand over a ground blind in most situations.1 point

And increase pressure in adjacent areas that will allow antlered hunting.1 point

I'd like to see some simple math on this: bow hunters in those zones, success rates, and number of does they want taken1 point

Ground blind also keeps your shooting the exact same way you have been practicing. Shooting from a stand you have to "brake" at the waist and bend the front knee to keep good form. Shooting from a stand is slightly different than from the ground but no different than shooting from a hill...1 point

swamp bucks are definitely the hardest recovery I've done. in my experience travel patterns are to spread out to bowhunt in them without getting busted unless you're at the fringes of them. I've weed wacked a 2-3' wide path along my preferred trails I want them to take with good results. just once then stay out of there. banks creeks along the transition from timber to swamp are always good spots. especially if the wind is coming off the swamp to there. shot bucks scent checking swamps that way. just have to make sure you're not silhouetted up in the tree as you're near an edge. looking at topo maps work great for bigger swamps to predetermine where bedding most likely will be. deer will go where it's wet if they have a reason but they seem to always bed where it's higher and dryer. likely you probably already know much of this. thought I'd share anyway.1 point

Sounds like an awesome outing! The best way to not hear the dreaded " I'm Bored " from kids, is to keep them reeling in fish! Nice job there Dad!1 point

Got down to the farm for a bit last night. Setup containment cages in all of the plots. Everything is really taking off in the last week, some of the plants are on their 3rd and 4th set of leaves. I didnt think to get any pics though. Ill be back down later this week and this weekend, so Im sure Ill get some pics then. One thing I noticed is that I seemed to miss some spots when I broadcast the seed in a couple of plots. Ill grab some extra seed and go over those spots Friday. I started scouting out a new stand location on the other farm, back in the swamp. Im going to need chest waders to get back in there, but a nice high stand should get me some good looks into the reeds where I know the big boys are bedding and hanging out. It wont be a bow stand, because we wont be able to get that close, but it should give me some good pokes in there with the rifle. Might need a canoe to get the deer out of there though.1 point

I am still thinking of applying for a DMP in 4A. Availability is low on #1, and none in #2. I still go to an agent for my license and tags, That way I can look things over and make sure the information is right. The point thing kinda stinks like a mule fart. The 'donating' $10 for points is like planting a $10 bill in the ground and hoping and waiting. I give you money, you give me what I paid for.1 point

I have an Otter Box protector on my Samsung S5 . I would have to remove the Otter Bod to get to the micro SD card . Much easier using an adaptor .I some times have 8 cameras out in various properties . I would have to have a bunch of the mini cards with the SD converters . Easier to use a cable .1 point

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say guys would be pissed at any regulation that would dictate when or where they can shoot a buck.....whether it be what they just passed or if it was an earn a buck rule, nobody is gonna be totally happy no matter what the change is.1 point

Steve863, Who are you kidding? "Skinned, quartered, and iced?" You forgot about giving the deer ample time to expire, tracking blood in the dark, gutting it, and dragging it. Usually all by myself. And thanks for twisting my words. You literally twisted my words to mean almost the opposite of what I meant. That takes skill. Ever run for office?1 point

Sorry bud but not true. I can show you plenty that are still black, balled up and hot to the touch. Bloodflow!!!! Just fixed a broken point on a yearling over the weekend that was blowing blood with every heartbeat. Yes all deer are different but early August see's many still putting on inches. Mine will start turning grey the last few days of August and be hard horn by middle of September at the latest.1 point

I am kind of fond of 30 cals. Not something to use every day for sure, but would love to have one of these as a range toy. 30-3781 point
