Deer (especially nice bucks) wont hit a salt lick with any regularity durring daylight this time of year through late winter... I wouldn't sweat it. Tell him throw some corn out with it for extra appeal.3 points

I'd ask him why he's trying to kill the apple tree? They are not salt tolerent, if he looked at me stupid ,I'd call the dec.2 points

Why bother with a salt lick under an apple tree ? I'd be happy using the apple tree as an attractant.2 points

Talk to him first . I'd tell him I saw the salt lick and what's up with that ? we don't hunt like that around here, and it's so close to my property I could get in trouble by hunting to close to it . I hope it's just out by your camera for pics ( giving him an out) . Then keep a close eye on him. If your first move is to call the cops well expect the same when your kid drives to fast down the street , or you play your music a bit loud, build a shed or pool deck without a permit, you dog barks, grass is to high , camper is parked to long in your yard, maybe you like to have a camp fire some nights hope it meets all the code requirements because he'll be calling .even if you're right in everything you do he'll still call and the cops / code enforcement will respond. We have friends who's neighbor called on them dozens of time. When they cut the grass he'd call the Sheriff because the clippings crossed the property line...... Talk to him, watch him , you'll know after a season how he rolls.2 points

Yes- and I was not the only one.A little different here where I hunt. I also don't believe in the "snitches get stitches" gangster, outlaw mentality. If the violators planned retribution or revenge?........well....may god have mercy on their soul.2 points

The point of no return for me is when safety becomes an issue. That's when things get real.2 points

Wait until you start finding the apples and other snacks that come out. Wait until he's tresspassing all over the area. Wait until he wacks a giant-illegally. Wait until he ruins what was probably a good area. Then sit back and wonder why you didn't call the DEC. If he played by the rules he wouldn't need to worry about someone calling up on him.2 points
-
You have a larger problem here. Under NYS. law, you can be ticketed for baiting and or feeding deer, even though you didn't place the salt lick there. It applies even if you didn't know it was there during season. As long as your hunting within a certain distance of it, ECO's can nail ya. I would dam well inform my neighbor of it.2 points
-
Bring it up in conversation that you saw his setup. Be nice and explain ti him to be careful because it is illegal to use the salt lick for deer. Don't make it sound like you will turn him in or anything like that. I can see people using these things for pictures but when season roles around and a nice deer is hitting the thing it will be hard to take away.2 points

A mature buck does things with reason or he wouldn't have made that age. What's the reason? Pressure, wind, time of year, time of rut.... Are you hunting a specific buck or deer? Scout and then plan not plan then hope Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk2 points

So it may very well happen that the archery doe-take in those areas could go down substantially because of the DEC's brilliant program. Gee, I guess all those people who were surveyed kind of missed that little potential side-effect. And since no one at the DEC can think for themselves without a mandate from stakeholders, It may wind up a result that slips by everyone. Or perhaps the DEC knew exactly what would happen.2 points

20ga mossberg 500 in 1993, funny how many git their first deer with a mossy 500..still have that same gun today in the safe, no frills gun that got it done.1 point

The less time spent at a set coupled with less scent left behind will only be to your benefit. If you have a few spots nailed down already then by all means I recommend installing some earth anchors now. You could even leave a few Ziploc bags of dry/sifted dirt nearby so you'll have it when you go to make your set. This early prep will save you from carrying it all in your basket on opening day. Of 19 of my personal hunting friends, here is the breakdown.. 30-06.....4 .270 Win...4 .243 .... 3 7mm08....2 25-06.... 2 .260 Rem.... 1 .270 WSM.... 1 30-30.... 1 .300 Win mag.... 1 Action types Bolt....16 Pump.... 1 Lever.... 1 Single shot.... 1 Bolt actions definitely rule here..It is interesting to note that there is not a single .308 Win or semi auto in the bunch. This certainly varies with locale..I once hunted in an Adirondack camp with 20 hunters...the rifles were OVERWHELMINGLY 30-06 and .308 Remington pumps and autos...I think there were only two bolt actions and two levers in camp..The rest were pumps and autos.. I sometimes hunt in New Brunswick with some friends who are locals there.. Most of them use Remington autos in .308 or 30-06, and they have lots of fun arguing among themselves about which is better..LOL...1 point

Trespassing and shooting more deer then that person has tags for is it for me. Those are the only ones that bother me enough to call the DEC.1 point

12ga foster slug from a mossberg 500. 23 years ago. I spined an enormous doe. I had to finish her off with a knife since the gun jammed. She was bawling and trying to get up. An awful first experience for a 18 year old but it made me the hunter I am today. I don't rush shots and if I can't see vitals the deer walks.1 point

Figure out how to use it to your advantage. Last thing you wanna do is piss off your neighbor over a salt lick because if your dec officer is some clown now that decides he is gonna walk in the woods every day at 730 am to see if this guy is hunting over feed. Trust me if I was him I would figure out a way to piss you off. Leave it alone1 point

My first was shot with a paper cased Super x 12 gauge slug from a Winchester M37 single shot. My first deer with a RIFLE ( PA) was taken with a 7 x 57 175 grain factory load from a sporterized M 1895 Chilean Mauser.. I had bought the rifle for $35 from a surplus store, and my dad and I shortened the barrel, cut down the stock and I had the bolt altered and safety replaced.. In other words, we BUBBA'd the hell out of it.. Nonetheless it shot well and I shot several bucks with it.. I wish I had it today in its original, unaltered condition, because it was a fine specimen.1 point

Yeah, I guess I gave that first choice (hardcore) the same interpretation. The fact is that I do know some that are so devoted and consumed by hunting that it does push aside all other priorities and responsibilities. I guess I do have other non-hunting activities and hobbies that share my interests and pastimes with my needs to hunt.1 point

Base it on the gun and use- my 257 wby is for whitetails and it stupid flat- have a minix 3-15x50 w a duplex reticle 0-500 is between the crosshairs and the flat post taper on the duplex- my 7mmrm sendero wears a vortex pat in 4-16x50 but could shoot steel beyond 1k and have moa and exposed adj turrets .... Could use both for either duty but they're setup for their primary focus I have a cheapy savage w the combo doa drop scope- it sort of works but the glass quality (?bushnell) is lacking and the circles are too big and cluttering. It's like using a Swiss Army knifes pliers ... Better than nothing but not very good Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk1 point

Im not sure the start drinking at 4 pm is something I'd do. But, A nice glass of single malt scotch about an hour before bed usually helps ease the nerves.1 point

Hung some stands last week in high heat and humidity , better late then never ...... Ya I got sweaty just like everyday at the gym or work. Today we'll be in our pool and it's great to keep warm pool temps well into Sept ! ( projecting it out another week or so) Then we are off to a river side bar supper time . I'm pretty darn happy with this heat in sept .1 point

We keep saying that, but in reality, our damage done not agreeing is minimal to the DEC. We can disagree all we want but were not changing the rules no matter how much the DEC says we have a voice. We dont, and the DEC does what they want to their agenda. So we can disagree all we want, but in the end it still doesnt change the result.1 point

18yo and LEGAL in anyones book no matter what the restrictions. If you're questioning him being a "shooter" or not, you nee to have your head examined, lol My Lord, if that buck walks out in front of any of you and you don't pull the trigger don't blame me when I do. That dudes got some serious beam length that would look good over any of our mantels..... or barn rafters.1 point

Me too but if he is 3-4 years old he is probably not going to do much more. Cant say i would burn the tag on him if he was here but would give the green light for one of the other guys.1 point

I see the buck of your dreams waling along and the only missing part is you are not there, you are sitting home watching TV...get out there this year and maybe that buck will walk by... at 74, I do not hunt as much as I did in my youth, but still love the pre hunt scouting, just walking the woods and looking for deer sign or the first buck scrape. Then the plan take shape of were to do when on opening day the guns go off. I like the early bow season, warm weather and not a lot of hunters in the woods. I let the doe's and young bucks walk so I tell my wife of 50 years, but she says I just go out to take a nap by a tree. I hope all has a great hunting season Bill1 point
