WOOT! I finally had the perfect opportunity to mention to my boss that since we were starting to slow down a bit that "hunting season" was coming at a good time!! I was going to need some time off coming towards the end of October, November and early December. We've been been friends for 40 years and he has always know I've hunted a lot, NOW he will know how much that really is!! He said "no sweat"............... Tomorrow I'm planning to bow hunt for the morning & evening and shoot the rifle during mid day. Rough day............... Soooo, to celebrate the 2015 Hunting Season (I know many of you SOB's have a jump on me) I'm going to offer a toast. Bourbon Manhattan and a new to me Geno Denning knife!! Bottoms UP and cheers....................................................3 points

Passed on the first shooter buck of the year thanks to the doe only rule. Guess I am destined for a better shooter. Lol. Don't even have a bow just video cam and the cam stinks in even shady light as I learned this morning. No video either. Oh well. Wasn't busted so hope I seem him again. Good Intel I guess.3 points

I think I would be tempted to try TILEX . You want to get the mold off the boots and you might as well kill it also . Removes the stains you can't stand, and kills the mold you can't see. Use Tilex® Mold & Mildew Remover as directed, and you'll not only remove ugly stains, you'll kill the mold and mildew that cause them. You can also use it to disinfect vinyl and plastic surfaces, even no-wax floors.2 points

Snow sure is great to see for bow season but the first real snowfall of the season usually shuts the deer down for a few days in my experience.2 points

In for coffee now. Heard some really weird growls on a ridge above me about 6am . Never heard the likes before. Went on for some time too. Edit: OK, watched some youtube vids of Bucks growling. Looks like it may have been the Big 10 Buck. Never heard 'em growl before. Very deep, drawn out, chesty growly sounds. Not like the usual grunts.2 points

For those concerned about getting a SIM card or the proper plan, I believe I have figured out a way to do it for you, so buying could literally be as simple as paying, opening the box, and turning the cam on. Obviously that would add a bit of cost, but that is now possible.2 points

So I have been thinking a lot about all the prep I do for hunting. One of my greatest memories from when I was 5 or 6 years old was when my father took me to hunting camp. This was back in the 70's. I can remember the room being cloudy from all the people smoking cigars and cigarettes in the light of the lanterns burning above the kitchen table. In the morning they would get up and cook bacon and eggs over the coal stove never thinking for a second what they smelled like. They would put on their wool red and black or red and green coats and whatever they wore for pants and boots and head out after breakfast. Most of them with a cigarette in their mouth. I can remember my Dad and I saw 22 deer that day. All while my Dad was toting around a 5 or 6 year old that I am sure wasn't exactly quiet. They were all doe (they didn't have doe tags back then) but still, 22 deer. Now when I go hunting I get up an hour early. Take a shower in the special soap, put on deodorant that doesn't smell (or work) take my cloths that have been washed in a special detergent and leave them in a tote in the back of my truck. Go to my hunting area and get dressed while freezing making sure not to make my cloths smell like the inside of my truck. Spray myself down with some magic elixir so I don't smell and to this day I have never seen 22 deer in one day. I have never seen a buck bigger than a 6pt. So I haven't been out yet this year but I decided that Sunday, when I go out....My cloths will be washed in the magic detergent but they won't be in a tote and I will probably spray down with the magic spray but only because I have it. I am not going to worry about it, I am just going to hunt and see what the season brings me.....Does anybody else just hunt anymore?1 point

Oh I never over do it anymore. I'd like to but it ain't happening. I went to bed at 9:30 and woke up at 3:00 although the alarm was set for 4:30. Laid there for 45 minutes and said the heck with it..............took a shower, brushed the pearly whites, made a cup of coffee and hit the road. I got to my spot around 6:30, took my time changing into hunting clothes/harness etc then made the long 250 yard hike in. A doe and fawn came by around 7:30 or so and although I had a real nice opening at 16 yards I thought they would swing around a blow down and head to the apple tree. No dice.............they did the old backyard football slant pattern and kept going. All & all in was a very pleasant sit. I PLANNED on hunting the afternoon also but I have to confess; I made a decision that shows maturity. My wife and I have plans for tomorrow and I'm tired so I came home. I didn't want to be tracking (maybe??) a wounded deer late, then gutting it and driving home. Then tomorrow I'd be obligated to butchering.......................... I did spend some time checking out a couple new places, moved a camera, shot two rifles and ate at Subway. Home by 3:30 and I'm basically on Queer Street now.......................1 point

there's been years when I thought my effective range was 30 yards, but after missing deer at less, I rethought that idea.1 point

That sounds cool, I can't wait to get out. We only have about 5 acres of mature hardwoods on our farm, but there are some oaks in there which usually provide a little action. Getting a limit is tough in the limited space. Tomorrow, if the weather cooperates, I will bring the .410 over to my folks place when we visit for dinner. They have a lot more mature hardwoods that are loaded with hickory. I have taken many a limit over there, but usually with the .22 after the leaves are down. The best afternoon I ever had on squirrels was opening day of gun-season for deer about 20 years ago. It was super warm and I killed my buck on our farm, skinned it and hung the quarters in our old garage fridge by 10:00 am. I headed over to the folks place after lunch and had my limit of squirrels with the .22 in under an hour. Squirrel stew in the crockpot for dinner the next day with pan-fried venison tenderloins as an appetizer was one of the best meals I remember. The only thing more fun than hunting squirrels and deer is eating them.1 point

100-300 ft apart in clusters. I place them to cover all wind directions and in what I call zones around the property....Being a bow hunter I like having lots of stands and blinds as well...If going into an area if I can't reach a stand due to deer or turkey then I have a brush blind nearby to scoot into ...1 point

I'm all set for this years canoe in deer hunt. I'll be putting the canoe in early weds., October 21st. I'll spend Thursday and Friday setting up camp and maybe a little scouting, but come Saturday the hunting starts. I have received my back country permit to camp till November 1st which will be about the best I can do. I have an 18' wood canvas Old Town OCTA this year, but I'm still on the fence about taking my trusty 15' Chestnut Chum. I know I could fit all my gear in the Chum, but what if I score a deer? One option would be to leap frog my way out for two days....to be honest that would be a good problem. The plan is to camp at site 35 on the s/w section of the lake and hunt around Tomar Mountain. Maybe spend some time down towards Bog Lake area if the winds are up. I'm very cautious about hunting the big woods and that pretty much dictates my hunting style. If I see some sign close to the lake I'll work it, or maybe circle the mountain and look for a spot to sit during the week. Deep penetration of the woods is just not going to happen. I have been tuning my outfit for the last few weeks, checking the tent and improving my interior frame, tinkering with the wood stove, getting it all cleaned up, packing and repacking the wanigan, checking the canoes, planning meals, studying the maps, staring at google maps earth.. Lots to do, getting ready is half the fun.1 point

maybe not, but when you make the claim that you took a shot that may have been out of your effective range and that "Jesus guided it to where it needed to be", you may open yourself up to some "good natured ribbing"....much like someone stating they have "32 year old underwear", that person too would be open to some razzing.1 point

I hunt the wind. all my gear goes in the back seat of my truck day before opening day and comes out last day of muzzleloader. i only pull the clothes and wash them in my regular washing machine every 2 weeks or so unless i get soaked or sweat like crazy. I dont shower in scent free anything, i dont have scent elimination spray, and my clothes are laid down on a seat thats probably half dog hair at this point. I also regularly shoot a buck with bow and gun, (usually after work in khakis) and several doe along the way. Play the wind, the rest is just sales1 point
-
Agree that wind is key. I don't do much other than use scent free soap and laundry detergent. Typically suit up at home. Good access and stand selection based on wind will do more than all the sprays, etc.1 point

so, if someone asks you how old you are, you actually add the "and a half" to your age if you're halfway to your next birthday?......I stopped doing that when I was 12.1 point
