  1. 8g is starting to pop. Did some scouting Friday and found a rub line with 3 scrapes within 20 yards. Snuck in Sat in the rain and put a stand 15 yards off the middle one. This morning had a perfect east wind. Got out in the stand about 6:30am. By 7:15 three does walking down a rub line. They didn't seem in a hurry so figured no buck was following. The last one was big so I took her. Figured it was early and didn't have to be to work until noon. About 45 mins later I hear some branches breaking. 25 years away a basket 8 is tearing up a tree. He finishes comes out and works his scrapes. Neck was all puffed up and the hair on his back was standing up. I let him finish taking a leak and let one rip. Put it right through the heart. He only went about 20 yards. Was down at my dads having a cup of coffee by 9am with two deer in the back of my truck. Best of luck to all my fellow hunters. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  3. 10/27 am 29 I was going to head to the hole property this morning but I had a 9:30 conference call. I hunted behind the house so I could sit longer and get back into the home office on time. I hunted the far stand and it was nice and cold. A bit before 8am I hear footsteps off to my right so grab the bow and stand up. Here comes a nice buck just cruising along. He is angling across in front of me and about 20 yards out. He hits a nice big opening and I grunt he stops and I put the hit on him. I was a bit nervous it was high a touch and not a pass through. The arrow was deep though hitting just past halfway back angled towards the front of the far leg. He ran out of site and I heard a big crash. I could not see him though so I waited 45 minutes and got down. After I walked 25 feet I could see white, no track job needed. The arrow was still in him and he went maybe 60 yards. The arrow punched through the diaphragm and into the boiler room. The arrow penetrated about 14-15 inches. Got him gutted out and dragged him across the creek to my trail and went back to get the zero turn!! lol I sold my sons 4 wheeler so hey work smart not hard!! That was the plan anyway until I could not get the zero turn started! So I ended up dragging him all the way out the old fashioned way! He is a solid buck. He hit 166 lbs on the scale. Oh and he was stuffed full!! I never gutted a deer that had so much food in his gut! When I was cutting him open his stomach was exploding out the cut. I had to be super careful. He had a lot of soybeans and apples in him.

  4. 4 pt 0830 am, almost gave up early this morning before I saw him. 25 yards broadside and rage hypodermic 125 HAMMERED him. Pass through blades still sharp and straight. Shot was a little back he trotted 20 yards, did the tail flicker for 30 seconds and fell over.id guess 120-130 dressed. My buddy and I have had many close calls with him but let him walk because we didn't feel the shot was right. Glad we did.

  7. This isn't a large rack and some of you might wonder why I got it mounted. Long story short, I was owed a free mount by my taxidermist. It's ironic, the reason I had a free mount coming was because this said Taxidermist was hunting a desired buck for 5 or 6 years. He had found 4 straight years of sheds(both sides), the 5th year he had the one but he could never locate the other. The reason being, it was in my bedroom. Months earlier my Dad was behind a collision shop looking for a fender when he kneeled down and located a very heavy 5 point rack sticking out of the snow. He brought it home and gave it to me. After awhile and enough talking, word spread I had the half shed, out of the blue I received a call from the Taxidermist asking if he could buy it. I wasn't interested in money and would much rather have a free mount. He granted it to me on this rack. We have since become quite a good acquaintances. I strictly use him for all mounts. He is a great taxidermist and guy! This was my first deer with a bow. I was in the process of calling in 2 doe with a fawn bleat when suddenly I heard this guy to my left. We all seem to be a close group on here so all honesty; I missed first shot at 15 yards, I blew arrow over his back. He didn't really react, so I had time to nock another, he was now about 25 yards where I blew it AGAIN!!! This shot was low, straight under him. He now was irritated and ran out to about 35 yards where third LUCKY placed arrow hit him in the femoral artery. It was surreal to the point of ridiculousness. I was only 17 and a terrible archery hunter, I needed all the luck in the world. Now I believe I have at least some skill. Either way, I'm proud of the rack.

  13. Congrats Fletch...I had a great morning...got about a half hour behind...so I bumped some deer(first time )...they were snorting close and all around me and my trails got filled back in so I wasn't as quiet...well I gave up and just snorted and stomped and snorted the last 200 ft to my stand...Well that got one noisy deer stomping my way as it got light a fox came through and cut my trail in never alerting..good,,,then at 8am I got a distinct smell wafting past me and grabbed my bow....heard movement then saw a squirrel...relaxed and 5 mins later in charged an 8pt ...he came in so fast I couldn't tell it was a buck at first and he froze behind some tree...but I could see he had his hind quarters loaded.....then I was able to stand and saw the rack...he stood 60 yrds out for the longest time and then she broke and the one with her did as well. Two doe ones I heard snort at me on the way in had bedded down out infront of the stand in brush...he had bedded down in the beech /grape cover to my rt.......those 2 doe were head my way at break neck speeds and he was dashing this way and that to stop them...but too late they were half way to the swamp....he stopped 80 yrds to my rt...good wind and I tried doe bleat...and soft grunt...but he had none of it...really he'd seen that they were the only ones in the area..I lost sight of him... So my staging areas are now busy . I have to step up my game and get in there at least 1 1/2 hrs early...this is where I took the 6pt last year, 9pt the year before in gun and over the years several 8pts and a few 7......I stayed until ten but had to get going....checked the cam at the garden stand on the way home...ha! I had sat in that stand freezing yesterday morning until after 8..barrels booming and all...nothing on the cam for a few days...today 26 pics and this guy...glad I don't consider him a shooter..I'd been a tad upset...

  14. What they don't do is compromise with gun-grabbers who would like to see a disarmed citizenry. For that, I'm a supporter. Never give an inch.

  16. The "social hour" as you describe it, is one of the reasons I love pheasant hunting. Besides working and being with my dog, I can carry on a reasonable conversation with my hunting partners without worrying about spooking the birds. I'll know when a bird is nearby when my dog goes on point! Deer hunting requires you to be still and quiet, bird hunting does not.

  19. So sitting in one if my favorite stands and at 6pm I see a doe walking on the edge of a ridge/brushline. Not a minute behind he I see one of my top 5 buck I have on camera just following head up not sniffing the ground, so i try various calls and of course he's not leaving the doe, the just walk down the ridge away from me and dissappear from sight and hearing. About 615 I see a doe walking the field edge toward me just walking and she comes to within 50 yards and cuts in the woods ,right behind her is the buck just walking along he get to 50 yards and turns broadside,I am debating the shot as I practice it I know exactly how far he is and he's not allarmed. As I am doing this the doe pops out in a lane 23 yards below me and continues to walk by the stand on the way to an apple orchard. Figuring the buck will.follow her same has he has for last 15 minutes I'll have am easy shot at 23 yards .. nope he turns 180 and walks into a set of 15 year old pines and dissapears... the doe continues to orchard and it's sun set so I get down take the long way around back to the house as not to disturb her or the buck.. Why couldn't he just follow the doe ,all I can think is he got sick of her teasing and went looking for an easier woman....lol

  22. Why did I have a nice 8, at less than 20 yards Friday morning, that just wouldn't give me a shot. And WHY did the same buck walk out of the brush, the next day, and stand broadside 20 yards, in front of the neighbor, who killed him 10 minutes into the stand??? WHY?? Why did I sit for 5hrs this morning not seeing a single deer but see all kinds of new sign all around my stand when I walked out??? WHY?? Why don't I just spend my Falls/ Winters Bowling??? Why???

  23. Tough call… Id like to say I would call the DEC/Police but if the response time was going to be long do you let the thing suffer?? Im thinking I would have given her a round to the back of the head, but its hard to say with out actually being there and seeing the whole picture.

  25. You can plant corn, leave it all year, or bush hog it down, as long as you dont pile it up in in that field. You can plant apples, and let them fall, but dont pile them up.

  26. That would take a brass set to ask...lol Shawnhu is right about tagging a deer...we have a friend that owned land on Marrow back...he shot a very nice buck on his property and it made it to the neighbor...as he got to the end of the trail the niegbor was tagging it...Wow was he HOT they had words and he called the DEC...Ya too bad! the guy that tagged it first keeps the deer....yep why I aim for the shoulder....

  27. He was probably just scent checking her. Had she been in heat that buck would have been in tow without a doubt and you would have had your shot. He moved on to greener pastures to more willing ladies..lol..good luck.

  30. I will grant permission to enter my land for retrieval purposes, but I do want to see the actual blood evidence for myself, so I generally will join in on the search. It is not completely unheard of that some guys will claim to be on the trail of wounded deer just to gain access into the property.

  32. I don't know how to really interpret if Glen is dead or not. My gut tells me he makes it and is alive. But, you never know. I have picked up a few issues of the comic, and in that world, no one is safe. They are trying to stay true to the comic and keep you on your toes. Anyone can die at any time. As for Morgan and the "Wolves". I think Rick will end up having to take Morgan out, I may be wrong, but the feeling is there. In that world you can't be a candy ass. You do what needs to be done.

  40. I read the whole thread. The gate and whatnot is a great idea. Im just making the point that flying off the handle and posting ideas about shooting people, setting traps, etc on the internet for all to see isnt usually the best way to go.

  41. 5.5 year old bow kill in 7F. One back leg had a lot of scar tissue we figure the buck at one point had been hit by a car causing the rack. This was an antlered doe from 7M

  42. Killed this buck in 2006, in 8C. His bottom front teeth were falling out. His left lung had a big solid mass in it. I cut it open, & it was black / greenish inside. I have no idea what happened to him.

  44. Yesterday was opening day for me, though we only had the afternoon to hunt. The weather forecast was a perfect setup for a new set that I hung specifically to go after my target buck on this farm. Hes a 4 year old that has been using the area very frequently. Around 2, my daughter and i got ready to go and headed down to the farm. When we got there, I decided to leave the ATV on the trailer and silently walk back in, which is more than 1/4 mile hike. We spotted 3 does and a coyote on the way into the stand. The wind was a pretty steady 10 to 12 mph and blowing so that our scent would pass into the open pasture, away from bedding and travel corridors. It didnt take long after we got up in the stand to start seeing deer. Does started pouring into the pasture area right where I usually see them. My daughter had her video camera and camera arm out for the first time, and was loving the footage she was getting. I scanned the wood edge and saw a large body appear. I had a good itdea what deer it was, and when he raised his head, he confirmed it. It was the buck I am after. I whispered to my daughter and she spotted him and started capturing footage of him as he fed along the hedgerow and began chasing does around in the pasture. His full attention was on one specific doe, which was hanging with another older doe. He followed and pushed her around the area, never letting her out of his sight. He stayed in the pasture and ended up bedding down 60 yards from us. Thats where he stayed for over an hour and a half. He got up a few times, looked around and laid right back down. He finally got back up when a 2 year old 8 point entered the pasture and approached his does. At that point, I thought Id try grunting and see what happens. I let out a single grunt and his head snapped to our direction. He pawed the ground, turned and went over to a bush and tree where he proceeded to tear up the ground, grunting and thrashing the bush and tree. Unfortunately, my daughter did not have her camera on. In the mean time, the two does slowly worked our way, and he disappeared behind a patch of thick brush. Within minutes, we heard crashing of antlers as the two bucks appeared from behind the brush, with the big buck clearly pushing the 2 year old around. The bucks fought off and on as the does had gotten to the 20 yard mark. I started getting myself in position for a shot when the bucks headed our way, and my daughter reached for her camera to get it powered up. That was the moment when she made her mistake. The second doe saw her move and the jig was up. I told her to freeze, and the doe stared her down, stomping and head bobbing, trying to figure out what she was. After a minute, she turned and ran toward the bucks. I grunted a couple of more times and the does turned and looked. They all stood there for 5 or so minutes and then started nervously working our way again. Neither of the bucks were nervous at all, they were just following the does, fighting every few minutes. The big buck got to within 45 yards, but did not offer a shot. After 15 or so minutes, something off in the woods spooked the does and all of the deer headed off in the other direction. My daughter and I talked about how cool everything was, and about the mistake she had made. I told her she did great overall, but made the same mistake that all hunters do at times. I said she should not feel bad about it, she should just learn from it. The rest of the evening we were covered up in deer, and we waited till dark and got down and snuck back to the truck. She was a little upset, so I gave her a big hug and told her that it was the best day of hunting I ever had, because she got to experience so much cool stuff with me, and that we would get back after that buck another day when the conditions were right again. We headed home and watched the video she got. Lots of great shots of the action. Cant wait for next weekend, when her and I have 2 solid days to ourselves to spend in the woods. Pics to follow...

  45. You did well grasshopper....lol Rather than drop a dime or snitch on a salt lick you did just what most normal people would have done. Myself, I would have attached a signed little note just to inform him who the nice guy was that didnt call the law for the destruction and did not own a new stand but now, after you made the first nice gesture....The next time would result in a little different mindset. I do have to say that either this guy thinks he can hunt this land and has the ok to do whatever he wants or he is really brazen. Probably not much of a hunter with the wheeler trail to the stand.
