  1. 11/7/2015 Avoca, Steuben County 8P 4:15pm Single lung and liver hit... let the deer lay over night.. Called the finger lakes deer search just to be safe.. Josh Prouty came from Hornell, NY with his beuatiful 7yr old Golden retriever "Rosston", I was not going to chance it, liver hits do not bleed much, and he was in big serious thick golden rod and briars patch.. The retriever found him in 15 minutes.. about 150 yards from the "crime scene". I knew his general whereabouts (2nd bed) if he hadnt made it even further, but again i wasn't chancing it.. Ive passed a TON of bucks through the years, and this guy was #4 on my hit list this year so I couldn't pass him up!

  2. This is my son's first season of bow hunting. He's been tagging along with me for years. We've been doing a lot of small game hunting, & spent all turkey season trying to get him a bird. He had 2 misses, but he hung in there like a diehard. We've been looking forward to this season. He practiced all summer, and helped me do all the stand work. It's been a tough season for us. Not many deer at our place this year (Naples, 8N). Not much sign, and not much activity on the cameras. We had to pass up a little buck during doe - only. The wind switched at the worst possible moment a few times. He got busted moving once. The last couple of weeks have been especially slow. Only 3 deer seen. Finally, last night, this guy came in to a stand we have by our pond, with a couple apple trees by it. Hunter handled it awesomely. He made a great 20yd double lung shot. The deer ran 60yds & crashed. It's a good thing we were strapped to the tree, because we were jumping around like little girls at a Justin Bieber concert. It was a trying season for me, & sometimes I felt like I was trying to teach a brick wall, but it turns out he WAS listening to me! If you'd told me a few years ago, that my best season would be spent trying to get someone else a deer, I would have laughed at you. I could hang it up today, without firing a shot, & this year will never even come close to being matched. You couldn't wipe the stupid grins off our faces all the way home. Ironically, this was the buck we had to pass up during doe - only. I feel very blessed to have shared this with him, been given such a nice animal. He texted me at 10:30 last night, & said "I can still hear that deer walking in the leaves". That about sums it up! Congratulations, Hunter!

  3. 1C Sat on a bedding area stand from 12:00-3, hadn't seen squat so I decided to high tail it down the road to another spot that rarely produces bucks in daylight but sq some chasing in the distance there last evening. Snuck into my favorite doe stand in an island of woods surrounded by a green strip of grass. Was set up for about five minutes, gave a bleat call and a few minutes later out pops a shooter. Heads right into field in front of me and to my left a bit and feeds for about five minutes quartering heavily to me at 30 yards. Shaking like a leaf, thinking it should be a chip shot when he starts feeding up the lane and turns broadside. Ofcourse he has other ideas and starts heading towards the scrape in the middle of the island. Have to spin around and and change my position so I have a chance between the tree limbs. He catches my movement before I can draw. I hold and he takes his eye off me just enough to pull back and let it fly. Rushed the shot a little but watched the rage hypo and gold tip xt hunter shaft do a complete pass through. Waited an anxious 40 minutes. Blood was good. Bubbles. Walk up a hill and can see him lying just inside wood line. Monkey off my back!! Clipped the top of both lungs! He couldn't of weighed more than 120lbs dressed. Looks to be only 2yr old. But non the less my best bow buck to date. Couldn't be happier

  4. I went to the insider corner stand as I said and saw a tiny fawn eating in the farmers corn and then nothing until 4 :10... When I heard steps coming down out of the neighbors "sanctuary" a huge doe strolls out and hits the other neighbor behind me....she mills around a bit and looks back up the hill...out of the slashings come a string of big doe and a couple of young ones 8 all told... they were just some of the biggest mature doe I've ever seen on the hill...and they started headed my way...I drew just as one crossed the line and I had a very small opening to shoot ...her head hit it and POOF...a fight breaks out behind her and they all scatter..For crying out loud where did my luck go this year!...I let down and wait...well it's hard to see for the neighbors golden rod is brown and 5ft tall and there are slashings all around the property line between me and the golden rod...I can hear and just see some movement...they are chasing and I see one little one getting stomped..literally ,hind leg standing beat down...he come walking in on the other side of me and I see a bigger doe behind him ...she slaps him again and I see a size difference but thats about it...the others are no where near...he cross past the tree and she is right behind...I figure now or never and draw...just as they pass my tree going into our woods I have a dinner plate opening so I set my self on that...her head and neck came through and just as her shoulder showed I released.....she turned on a dime and went right back to the neighbors golden rod ..I heard a crash and silence....The shot did not sound right and I could not see my arrow........it was about 15 yrds and it was more of a crack than thwack...I checked and it was 4 :25 I sat and thought man sun down at 4:54 and I have had one other no blood track in that golden rod for an 8pt...not fun..it is basically tracking deep fresh hoof prints in moss...4:39 I decide to look for the arrow...perfect solid blood and hair...OK 3 drops of blood then nothing...I watched where she went and THANK GOD I am good at pin pointing the direction of sound...I hit the golden rod and found her dug in tracks...kept looking back at my stand and would squat to look through stems... trails and beds ,rubs where every which way...took another look at the stand 30yrds in...... squated down and closed my eyes to think...then scanned to my right...there was her back 10 yrds away... Well unfortunately she was no where near the size of the other deer...but no complaints here.... after that first release flub...then not being able to even move my bow string and everyone going nocturnal...perfact night to hang and tender meat...going out now to process...shot hit high shoulder and exited at her elbow ....caught both lungs..no blood at either wound?? She was full though...

  5. I've been wanted to try my hand at taxidermy for a while now. A friend of mine helped me mount the buck I killed on 10/2 and I'm pretty happy with the results. I still have a little touching up to do and the cape isn't fully dried yet...

  6. By no means a trophy hunter. Well for starters, last night I sat in the same spot, there's a camp that is highly inactive, never have actually seen anyone there until this year, but they decided to stay there this weekend. This one came in but got spooked from the kids tuning around playing. Now, it's about 300 yds from me, I was quite upset. Got up this morning debating, said screw it I'll give it another shot. "Maybe they'll sleep in" haha. Well they did. This guy came in quick like he was on a mission. Right from the corn field about 200yds to my left. He got right under me about 10yds, I blat to him to get him to stop, no interest, finally slowed up enough and let one rip and I dropped him! Hit him high behind the shoulder clipped the spine. Can finally say I got a buck with a bow. Time to be more selective now! Awesome morning!

  9. I took the "rough" cape to the taxi-dude (Bernie Seitz) this morning. I asked him to save the lower jaw for me as I'd like to have it aged. He called me a couple hours later and said he had caped it all out and I could swing by and p/u the lower jaw and horns. We were still in the area and buzzed over to grab the goods. His age estimate is 7.5 years old and the ROUGH green score on the antlers was 138" gross and 123 4/8" net. I'm pretty happy with the numbers......................... The BEST part of the entire deal is that I made a great shot. I've blown some gimme's before, I promise you. Some other pics........

  10. Killed a beauty this morning, my best archery buck ever. 13 points, 18.5" inside-21.5" outside spreads and 205 pounds dressed and witnessed. Killed him in East Aurora. Perfect shot (although I'd have been pleased with JUST a double lung) dead center in the heart. He went probably 150 yards before expiring..........on the neighbors land! I made a quick phone call to the neighbor and they denied permission to drag him to their driveway so we had a longer more difficult pull a head of us. "Us" is the extra help I called in; a friend and his son from Hamburg. I'd have had to scramble for more distant recruits if they couldn't make it!! It was about all we could do to drag him back to the truck but we got it done.

  12. Switched spots at 3. Snuck into island stand. Wasn't in the stand five minutes and shooter pops out to a bleat call. Fed in field for five minutes. Before heading for a scrape in the island. Pulled off a tricky shot. Managed to just clip both lungs. More in harvest thread.

  13. so damn hott I just got her quartered up and in the cooler on ice to age for a couple days ... Idk if it's from being so high above this deer but the exit hole plugged with fat and some intestine so it didn't bleed out at all and luckily I watched were the noise of it running stopped cause I couldn't find blood after 25 yards and then found out why when I found her ... 17. The plan was to hunt to 9:00 then for Joe and I to put a new rather large ladder stand as Joe had be leave by 10:30 and I needed help putting it up. Joe went into the thick stuff and saw 4 bucks and 1 doe, while I saw nothing..... Then this guy crossed a large field and entered the woods I'd say 100 west of me around 8:45 or so. A bit later I saw antlers heading my way, I stood up,with bow ready he's coming straight towards me , he passes and at less then ten yards I shoot. Rear quartering but I hit high! No pass through either, he ran a bit than walked off, I heard one snap. 30 minutes later I thought I'd check the blood but figured I'd be coming back in 6 hours to look. Blood was very good an easy track he went about 100 yards. 6 pt, no brow tines. I know not a nice woods picture but I got a kick out of this picture !

  21. Well, I found my deer! Was out yesterday and I saw him walk by with barely a limp. He had his opposite side facing me, so I did not get to see the poi, but he didnt seem to be in any pain. Never got close enough for me to seal the deal, but honestly I am just super happy he lived. Freezer or forest. Those are all I want for my deer. lol

  22. Last nights young doe nixed todays hidey hole hunt...but no complaints...I can relax knowing we have some fresh venison in the freezer...and I havn't lost my touch/luck...shoulders a tad sore today anyways...So many good plans worked but didn't pan out until last night...and a fight almost messed that up too...I knew all the deer where held up in that neighbors land..this confirmed it...also found a bedding /rub area right behind the stand on the other neighbor...I'm so glad I stopped her and got retrieval permission again this summer...Good luck guys

  24. Didn't have signal from the cabin yesterday, so here's my update. Went out and hunted while sick, got a Charlie horse shifting in my seat to get a draw on a deer. Shot that deer in spite of all that was against me. What I thought was a respectable 4 point turned out to be a wee 8 point. My first ever archery deer and I'm quite proud. 12 yards from a ground blind 42lb Elite Hunter. Full account coming soon to the harvest thread. Back to work, not reality, today.

  25. Had some doe piss from last season, never refrigerated it, thought it was garbage. But, just for the hell of it I poured it in the leaves and rubbed my boots in it before walking to my tree. Not long after getting settled I heard something following my exact trail, coming right to me tree. I could see the reflection of the moon off of his antlers and was hoping he was a big 11 that I have on cam and have seen a time or two in the distance. It was barely light but he presented broadside, under a full moon, at about 20 yards. I let one fly and knew I had a good hit. Heard him crash about 60 yards from where he was when I shot. Nothing special, but good meat. Old deer too, flat teeth and a few missing. White in the face too. Maybe 4.5-5.5? Certainly on the decline from what I can tell. 7 points in all. 168lbs dressed. Shot in 3S on Halloween morning.

  26. So I have not been seeing any bucks all year. In fact only a spike. Tons of sign so I keep plugging the time in. Well in a day dream I look out about 100 yards and there is a bear headed right to me. She worked her way to about 7 yards and I drilled her. She went about 60 yards and piled up. Still can't believe it. She weighed in at 145#dressed and about 5ft nose to tail. She had a beatifull coat. We believe she is 4-5 years old. No cubs yet. I will find out once they Dec test the tooth.

  27. this morning.I decided to go and do a short hunt in. east aurora I had things to do at 11 so I was going to sit until 10 I got into my stand at 550 at 620 I have a deer right behind me making all kinds of noise 10 minutes later it walks out at 30 yrds and tasks the trail out of the area to dark out to tell what it was a little while later I hit my grunt tube twice and with in.15 seconds I have 2 deer in front of me both are bucks but im not looking at tge racks the second bucks body was much bigger so I focus on his body while he's sniffing my scent rag at 12 yrds away broadside I draw my bow back but can't see my peep is twisted I let down twist my.peep draw again still can't see wtf I let down again twist it draw still can't see threw the peep so this time I put my eye on the string next to the peep put my 20yrd pin behind his shoulder and hear that amazing sound after the release and with in seconds I hear him crash. I sat for 45 minutes when I realized I could actually see my buck laying dead 50yrds from my.stand. my wife and kids are very excited to have some venison going.into the freezer.

  30. OK I am a flat lander and almost every weekend I go up to the cabin in the woods from LI. This morning I go out to my tree stand that over looks my opening day stand where I will go it's about 150 to 200 yards away. With binoculars you can see the difference between does and bucks but can't see exactly how points. So I am in the stand at first light and see a few does eating in a moss field with the 2 bucks I have been watching since August. By 8 the show is over and they have gone up into the mountains. I decide to walk down and check my cameras. That is what this flat lander always does. As I walk I hear something less them 25' from my side. I peak over the bushes their he was a 12 pointer. His head is down sniffing. He never looks up. WHAT DO YOU DO!! I hit the deck I can hear him walking closer about to enter the trail am on. 20' 15' CRAP he is going to see me smell me a run away forever never to be seen in daylight again Think fast I lay on the ground like a log grab my iPhone get the camera ready because no one will ever believe this. As I am laying there he hits the trail 9' from me looking at me but sniffing the ground. I could see the morning dew on his nose. I am thinking he is going to run right in to me. He just kept walking looking at me as I looked at him. I was to afraid to move he turns a little snap a picture he keeps going. He walks up the hill behind me and every once and a while looks back at me. I try to stay behind a tree between us peeking around the side he looks see me but keeps walking knowing he is the king in this area. Finally he walks pass my stand that I will be in on opening day. I swear on my life, my guns my right to bear arms and become a Democrat anti if this is not a true story Oh here he is. I will not be touching the 5 or 6 they can live on until next year. Here is my white whale

  31. Working today but decided to actually walk the dog this morning as opposed to him just hitting his morning routine in the yard. Walked along a nature study woods in New Rochelle and kicked a massive doe...5 minutes later-2 more. That is 3x the amount of deer I have seen all season when on stand(30+ hours of sit time-not counting travel and scouting and walking and set up). Man am I bitter!!! 33. 11/8/2015. Track 2 A hunter reported shooting a deer in the shoulder and having it drop right there. He climbed down from his stand 10 minutes later and was reaching over to poke it with his rifle when it jumped up and ran away. Bright red blood was reported - no bubbles. He and three buddies did a grid search and lost blood after about 40 yards. Luna quickly got on the track and stayed on it for 3/4 of a mile with spotty blood. She lost it right at a point where I had just said I could smell it....very obvious during the rut. She started circling the area and we caught a glimpse of it walking away. This 4 pointer was quickly dispatched and the long drag out began. During the drag we were talking about the branches of service we had been in. One of the guys dragging is a former Marine, the other guy was in the Army. I informed them the Coast Guard was watching them drag.

  34. 11/8/2015 I got called out on a track that the hunter could not find the hit site, but located blood in the woods and immediately backed out and called me. The blood was a shade or two darker than bright red, and also a piece of fat was found. Further down the trail I found one white hair in some blood. The blood trail started fairly strong, then slowed down. After being on the track for awhile, it suddenly got stronger again. I believe this is where we jumped the deer the first time, although no bed was found, and we. Either saw it or heard it. The blood slowed down again, but of course was very fresh when we'd see some. The mile and a half track took us through cedars, boggy areas, clear cuts, and eventually a large swamp. Luna pulled hard throughout the track, barking when I believe we were close to the deer. The hunter was ready to call it quits at one point, but I insisted we continue, if for no other reason than to hopefully reward Luna for all her hard work. As we approached the swamp, the hunter stayed back in case we kicked the buck out. Luna and I were barely in when I saw the buck standing about 100 yards out. I called the hunter up to make the killing shot, which he successfully did. Luna and I stayed put to keep our bearing on where the buck had dropped while the hunter went home for his waders and canoe. His son came out with him and together they retrieved the 4 point buck. The whole time he was gone, Luna whined and trembled in anticipation of sinking her little teeth into that tasty deer. Afterwards, the hunter half jokingly told me he probably wouldn't call me again because he's never had to work this hard for a deer. We discovered the first shot was a gut shot, not brisket.

Don't listen to the Monday morning quarterbacks……..After I lost a deer 2 years ago, I was dumb enough to post about it and all the perfect people did nothing but give me crap about it.."Why did you hunt in the rain?? why didn't you call deer search?? why didn't you practice more??" Blah blah freaking blah… Humans make mistakes and things go wrong even when you think they won't. Except for the perfect few of course… Try not to sweat it too much.. it sucks but it happens…..

  41. yes it was created for primitive pursuit... and that is exactly what a cross bow is.. cap and ball gun as well. my head shaker is the assumption that the compound is primitive. seeing some of these new bows, lighted pins, digital sights there is more technology in these bows then I have in my old ford pick-up. if the season was long/recurve I might look at it differently... but then again the 100 voices that use them would make no sound against the masses. so I stick with... if it allows more people to get in the field, it's good for the sport.Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk

  44. Met 2 of my sons at a spot in South Bristol and we hunted along a couple of gullies . Matt and I were on the North side and Nick was on the south side . Matt was 100+ yards down the hill from me . He said there were 10 turkeys roosting in the tree next to him and the flew across the gully . He saw 2 different bucks but nothing close enough to shoot with his cross bow . I wasn't seeing anything ! At 9:18 , I got a text from Nick ... "Buck down" . He had put out a couple of scent sticks which drew the buck in . He saw a doe and 2 fawns headed his way after shooting the buck but when they got a whiff of the scent sticks , they took off . A fairly good size 10 point but the tines weren't very big in diameter . A 10 point no less . Around 10:30 Matt and I headed over to help Nick get the deer out of the gully . Matt and Nick dragged it on the sled but it still was a chore . Once out of the gully , they got the other land owners permission to drive down in the field and get the deer . We were looking it over and noticed some ticks . So , they spent some time pulling them off of the deer . They left to head back to Honeoye Falls to take care of the deer and told me that if I stayed and got a deer to call and they would come back . Around 3:45 , I saw 5 anter less across the small gully along the edge of the grassy field . They headed south rather than come my way . Later I saw 3 more . I left the stand at 4:30 . Got to the car and called to let the boys know that they were off the hook and didn't have to return . On the way out I spotted two bucks . So it wasn't an uneventful day after all but ........ I hate getting up at 3 in the morning !

  46. I have no problem with background checks. What I have a problem with is Politicians who pretend to address gun violence by passing laws that infringe on the rights of honest gun owners yet criminals and mentally ill people will never obey these laws. None of these "Politicians"ever address the mental health issue, they never address inter city gang/gun violence, they never address career criminal repeat offenders, instead we get crap like our little two bit dictator telling us that we can't have more than 7 rounds in a mag, we can't have a semi rifle with a pistol grip..Pass all the background check laws you want,, until the real problems are addressed they will do nothing. And Debbie Wasserman Shultz is a dishonest, lying scum bag who will say ANYTHING if it benefits her and her party..Did I mention she's a scum bag???? LOL!!
