Not the biggest drop tine buck but I finally got one at 7:23 this morning.

Buck we called Basket 9. Shot Opening morning at first light, doe was down 20 minutes later.

Had this guy come in at 8AM and lay down 30 yards from me. My biggest buck yet. Couldn't be happier.

It was an amazing opening day for us at camp! My brother shot an 8 pt around 7:30 then all hell broke loose at 9:00. A hot doe cam through and a friend took the 6 pt that was chasing it.The doe runs past me and I take it only to see a huge buck coming down the swail on her scent. I shoot him, the buck which is a 7 pt weighed 185lbs dressed. It is the one laying in the field, very dark colored on the deer pole. My nieces husband gets back into my stand after we gutted the deer and got them out of the woods. It wasn't more than a half hour and another hot doe comes along with three bucks chasing her. He shoots the second which was a real nice 8. The third buck shows up and was a giant but he just had to watch as big deer just stood over the buck he just shot. This all happened in the morning!!!

Nailed this big doe 7:45 this morning in the cold n wind .... Came in with three other doe's behind me .... Took the top section of my climber out ( summit open shot, no rail) n had a nice comfy seat at the base of the tree , don't know why I never did that years ago .... Spotted her early n slipped off the seat n propped the gun up on the climber seat n she came into the scope n bang , dropped like a sack a potatoes 70 ish yds out ... Hunted all day getting ready to pack it in. Lowered my pack and there it was a bear 75 yards out and moving broad side. Took one shot the bear headed toward me and droped in its tracks. Made a groaning noise and that was it. So it pays to be prepared right to the end of the day.

I think it's what's between it's legs that determines whether or not it's a buck or doe..........it's what on top of the head that determines whether it's an antlered or antlerless deer.........

The problem is jealousy and entitlement.

Due to family and work obligations throughout October and half of November, the first time I had the opportunity to go hunting was on 11/21/15, opening day for firearm in southern zone. It was also the first time for my son going deer hunting. We drove up on Friday afternoon meeting my brother in laws and my inlaws at the house. My son and I went out to set up our blind on the edge of a cut corn field at the corner of our property. We got back to the cabin within 15 minutes of setting up as I did not want to spend unnecessary time in the field and did not want to spook any deer. Friday night started out with the traditional "opening day eve" dinner consisting of tripe sauteed in tomato sauce, garlic and vegetables. I never thought my 14 year old son would eat it but he ate everything and licked the bowl. Saturday morning (opening day) the alarm rings at 5:00AM. Coffee is brewed and after a couple of cups of coffee and a quick breakfast we suit up and head out making the long 400 yard trek to the blind. At 6:15AM we are settled in and wait. We sat there watching and listening to the woods wake up. There was no wind, and it was cool but not terribly cold. The skies were clear and the stars were out. As we sat there, at about 7:20 AM I noticed a deer come out from high thick brush across the cut corn field directly across from where we were sitting. This was about 50 yards or so. It starts walking along the edge of the brush toward our right stopping and sniffing the air every other step. I grab my binos and see that it is a small 6 pt. I whisper to my son get yourself ready. We watch this buck continue along toward our right and about to turn back into the brush, so I grab my grunt call and let out a few grunts. He stops dead in his tracks. I let out a few more grunts and he makes a 180 degree turn and starts walking toward us at an angle. He steps out into the cut corn field and stops at about 60 yards from us at a quartering away angle while looking in our direction. I whisper again to my son, if you feel ready take the shot. The buck stood there for about 20 secs presenting him a perfect shot. My son squeezes the trigger and the buck kicks and runs into the thick brush. I'm thinking it was not such a good shot as the deer just trotted away disappearing into the thicket. My son starts shaking at that point as we sit there a few minutes to let it sink in for him. He tells me that he panicked when the buck came out of the thicket but was able to calm down aimed small and took the shot. It was after he squeezed the trigger and the buck ran off that he got buck fever . . . go figure! Now given the fact that there were others in our group out there hunting and so as not to spook any chances of their taking a deer, we sat and waited. We continued to wait all the while I'm playing the scenario in my mind over and over again wondering if he got a good shot on him. Now we waited for about 1 1/4 hours. How did I keep him from running out after the deer you ask? Well, Iphone games of course. Finally at 8:45 my BIL comes down off the tree and walks to another stand closer to where the buck ran into the thicket and climbs up. Scopes the area to look for any other deer that may be in the thicket and waves us on to go search. My son and I grab our rifles and head out to the point where he was standing when he was shot. We see no sign of blood and I start to worry if my son connected. We find a well used trail heading into the thicket and we proceed to follow it. We start walking about 10 - 15 yards into the trail still not seeing blood when my son shouts out and points to a splatter of blood on our right. We take some more steps and find another area of more blood and then a few more steps and then off to our right we see the white belly of the deer. We walk up to and without saying a word my son kneels down and thanks God for the opportunity to take this fine animal. We take a few pictures and my brother in law comes down and helps us drag it into the corn field. We tag him and wait for my BIL to get the tractor so we can bring him back to the house for processing. After gutting and skinning him (and yes I made my son help me do it much to his dismay and with comments like "how can you hold its poop shoot like that?" and "How can you just stick your hands in his body and pull out the guts?") I told him that shooting it is the easy part and that this part of the hunt is showing respect for the animal so that we can use and consume it. He smiled and got his hands in there with me. Saturday afternoon's sit was not as successful as the morning hunt and we saw nothing moving. Sunday morning's sit was also uneventful given the fact that there was thick fog across the property and we could not see that far in front of us. Nevertheless, I would say it was a successful opening weekend for my son as no one else including myself connected opening weekend. I think the smile says it all. He's already asking to go back up this weekend! I think he's addicted! More importantly I may have created a monster and a hunting buddy for life!!

I could tell my wife I'm going deer hunting in the middle of July and she would say "ok be careful"...

I can add two of my better bucks to the deceased file... The first is probably the best known age 3.5 year old that I've ever had on cam. He was weaker on the right side this year but still a bruiser, a buck that could have been a real giant next year. I saw him bowhunting twice the last week and had a feeling that his daytime wandering habits were going to get him into trouble this weekend. Sure enough, a neighbor killed him 7:15 yesterday morning. He was the one buck that I was really rooting for to make it through season. Oh well, at least I won't be hoping he shows back up when I start running my cams again in a couple of weeks... Last year: I had been keeping tabs on this deer for a friend of mine. He was a very frequent visitor all through Sept and Mid-October... Last night he showed up in my uncle's alfalfa field which is about 3/4 mile from where we had been getting him on cam. My cousin dispatched him with his 7MM Rem Mag. Unfortunately, he had recently broken off both brows and had a couple of deep gouges in the back of his neck. My friend's sister-in-law heard a vicious buck fight last week in the location of the trailcam. No doubt he was one of the bucks she heard... Congrats to my cousin on harvesting a great buck after missing the past four seasons serving in the Marines...

Nope, sorry. Can't think of one good thing at all about going back to work.

Not that I'm saying any of above is right but when I was young everybody put their dead deer on the top of the vehicle and it was normal and no one cared. Now we need to be so PC because it might offend someone where food comes from. See where that has got us too now in the crazy PC world where everyone gets s participation trophy! I'm not sure hiding our hunting pastime is helping at all. You can also be respectful to the animal I'm not saying to do otherwise. It's just this oh hide what we do! I'm not ashamed of my hunting why should we be! My rant lol

My gun season ended at 7:15. I barely had enough time to settle in, heard him making a scrap inside some mountain laurel then stepped out onto a trail and made a fateful turn towards me.

Hunted my "lucky" stand this morning and I made 75 yd. shot with the muzzleloader on this buck. I have shot 3 bucks of similar quality over the past 4 years from this stand. I know that there are bigger ones shot elsewhere in the state, but this is a good one for this area. I hunt the property a lot during bow season and have had chances at some smaller bucks, but have passed on them. I missed my chance at a smaller 8 pt. last Sunday at 20 yds.

So here is the story of my day, get in stand around 6 see nothing... Decide to get down and still hunt over to one of our blinds. Get to blind and boom shot real close... Get a call from My hunting buddy it was him and he needs help getting it out... Fast forward to 12:30 he drops me off at the stand that he shot her from in the atv, and heads off. Fast forward to 12:40 4 does behind me. Smoked one, 12:50 he's back with the atv load up head back down from camp!

So, the "person" in question posted their own land and put up some surveyors tape on their own land? I really don't see the problem here.

For those of you that don't like , understand / comprehend Growalot's posts , don't read them . Go on to the next post . Why put yourselves through the agony of reading them when it bothers you sooooo much ! If it such a terrible ordeal to understand them ......move along to the next person's post . Why be a Masochist ( A willingness or tendency to subject oneself to unpleasant or trying experiences ). And now we are correcting spelling . Wow ! If many folks had to use Spell Check and it wasn't working and you couldn't post a misspelled word , there would be fewer posts on here . Several people type faster than they are thinking and transpose letters but we know what they are saying so what's the big deal . ........... Just an opinion ! Flame away ! What I like about this thread is that they guy that did nothing wrong is the jerk, then other guys are talking about putting gut piles in his driveway, and harassing him in other ways. I wonder why so many people have the idea that hunters are a bunch of knuckle dragging Neanderthals.

That won't stop deer. But I'll admit after I moved south I was amazed at how much kinder people were. NY is not lacking of d-bags

Nothing good comes of shooting fox with a slug. There will be less of him to get tanned or try to sell .

Yea I got thinking about it.. like that wouldn't be the buck I killed. And I think it gives him great character and makes him unique to me. He was a brawler and I can dig that haha

I am actually sitting in the concrete jungle this morning thinking I will bring a bottle of home made wine and knock on his door and ask to have a sit down. It may not be worth it though as despite what apparently is coming off here, I am not REAL worked up. The way the deer run my area is essentially a loop. Come off his land wander across mine, up, turn and walk across another landowners or two, then come down on the other side of his land. So no, deer don't always go in both directions at least on my place they dont. Any rate, only three days of work again this week then off to the woods. Good luck out there.

Wow, great job! That's one meat pole that will be hard to match by anyone!! You must have bent your gun barrel somewhere since you actually connected this year!! Congrats!

We are mounting 3 of the bucks.

So this has been the best year ever for me. I got my first Bow kill 10/17...a big fat doe....Last Saturday I got my first and biggest buck ever with the bow....a 5pt and today I beat that by a lot. I got in my stand at 6am and waited for the woods to wake up. It was a perfect morning. Cold, no wind, sun coming up...Just the kind of day I am usually at work for.....At about 7:45 I hear a noise behind me and look over my shoulder and I see a buck. Its about 30 yds behind me moving from behind my left shoulder to behind my right shoulder. I inch myself around in the stand and get my scope on him. I can see he is a 4 pt. I am trying to decide what to do when I hear a noise back in front of me. I turn my head and a doe is coming down in front of me. I go back to paying attention to the buck. I have him dead to rights a number of times and decide he gets a pass from me. I know a lot of you do this but this was a big deal to me. If it wasn't for my 5pt last week this would be my biggest deer. I never figured I would be in position to pass on a buck but I did....Fast forward to 4pm....I am thinking to myself....why don't I ever see deer in the evening. I have been hunting for years and 95% of the deer I have seen were before 9am. I am thinking back to the 4pt and how people always say don't pass a deer on the first day you would shoot on the last day. I catch movement out in front of me...its a deer...I check my phone and it's 4:10....I think if they are going to come in it better happen quick. I get my scope up and find the deer. Its a doe and she is coming right to me. I catch movement behind her and move the crosshairs....Please please be a buck...I catch a glimpse of Antlers and I can tell it is wide. The doe is moving right in....and I mean almost at the bottom of my stand. I am trying to keep myself composed because I know if I blow it with her right there he is gone to. He is moving in but more off to my right side...He is behind some trees and he stick his head and neck out....and I am like...wow they do exist.....I have my cross hairs right on his neck and I am thinking do I take this shot. I am proud of myself. I walked myself through the steps....breath...squeeze the trigger...don't pull the gun...pow..right in the neck...He drops right there....I look down at the doe expecting her to bolt. She doesn't budge....I couldn't believe it...she went right along like nothing at all happened. I want to go see my deer but I don't want to blow this deer out of there. So I wait and wait while she feeds off. I finally climb down when she is about 35-40yds away and she could care or less. I walk over to him and I was so happy I had tears in my eyes. I was really starting to think that deer with 6 or more points were mythical creatures....Thanks for reading!!!!

Thanks guys. 2 more hours today combing a nearby wood lot and neighboring high grass. No sign- no birds. The more I replay the shot the higher it seems. Feeling confident it's the blackstrap. Put more cameras up to hopefully catch him walking. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Deer everywhere yesterday ! All 3 of us had multiple young bucks and a few doe under us , morning and afternoon . Bucks chasing in the fields , one monster in thick stuff but no shot due to well all the thick stuff. I even grunted one in from well over 300 yards ! He turned and ran right in , turned out to be a small racked one though,still fun though. Oh I got on stand around 6:40 just as it got light .if I had to get in the woods at 1 AM or even 4:30 like some of you I think I'd hang up the gun and bow. But well good luck .

I used to hunt state land on opening day, get in super early and all set up and here comes a flashlight. I'd shine my light at them and they'd see me and go ahead and setup right next to me anyway. This happened two years in a row. I finally got down and asked the guy if he enjoys having half his hunting cutoff or what, why not go another couple hundred yards??!! His reply was of course "I always hunt here". I told the guy to go ahead and get in my stand I have another and he proceeds to tell me it's illegal to hunt from a tree stand during gun season

this was exit but entry was exact same spot in the other side, he went about 40 yards and piled up. That's with a 150grn .270. I'll aim further forward in the future I'd like to anchor them in their tracks, especially opening day

I am just sitting here with my tummy rumbling thinking I didn't bring any TP....with my stomach that should be the first thing in my pack. Only sitting until 10....hoping I can "gut" it out....otherwise I will be losing a pair of socks

My wife and I were set up this morning at the same location that I shot my archery buck. I was watching a gulley crossing and she was about 75 yds away in a stand overlooking two fields. About 7:15 I hear her shoot...look up and see a nice buck coming at me. I swing to get the gun on him and he tips over!!! What a way to break in her new TC Venture .308!!! I believe this is the same 8pt that was under my stand when I killed by bow buck... He ran about 40 yds and was leaking blood like he was hit with a Rage. Love those Nosler Ballistic tips!!!

Wow. At 1am, I was debating between murdering the guy snoring on the next couch over, or stuffing yesterday's boxers in his mouth.

since I retired 1/1/2015 this is going to hopefully be the first year I get to go out more then for days and I have a grand daughter just counting the days until sat to go with me and set in the stand she helped me build its fully enclosed and yes it has heat as she is only seven.
