Saw this great comment on the net. Perfectly sums up the situation: "Last year, the bleedin' heart liberals lost their collective mind over the fact that dentist Walter Palmer shot and killed a lion named Cecil during a hunting trip to Zimbabwe. Big whoop. Hunters go to Africa. They kill animals, and the licensing fees help the conservation efforts on the continent. But thanks to the outcry, hunters are no longer booking trips to the African Savanna. Now, the place where "Cecil the Lion" was bagged and tagged is facing a bit of a lion problem. The lion population at Bubye Valley Conservancy has ballooned to more than 500 felines. Combined with a dry summer that caused the grassland to grow stunted, the lions are laying waste to the other animal populations. As a result, the conservancy is saying it might have to go out and kill 200 lions. "The astronomical fees foreign hunters paid to shoot animals in Africa directly supported the continent's conservation efforts," wrote The Truth About Guns' Nick Leghorn. "It was a mutually beneficial, self-sustaining system. Now that the hunters are gone, there isn't enough money to support Hwange National Park's operation and the ecosystem is out-of-whack. Lions will be killed, anyway, without any of hunting's enormous economic benefits." Furthermore, think of the economic loss to the region. Think of the lost jobs, the money not coming into the area because there are not the hunters willing to pay for lodging, food, transportation and guides. Anti-hunting groups had their field day, but they aren't going to be concerned about the effects of their rabid protesting."5 points

Usually people on this site complain other people post things that have nothing to do with hunting. They demand these posts be censored, or at least moved to the political forum. This guy posts nothing but hunting posts and people still protest. I don't get the animosity and hostility here.4 points

Just curious as to why you have an incessant need to show off or brag about your trophies? You have yet to add any addition knowledge or other constructive participation to the site so far.4 points

Disgust with poaching by a huge percentage of hunters goes without saying. That message never has a shortage of supporters. Believe me, there are plenty of anti-hunters who are quick to pile onto that message and attempt to link poaching with hunting. We even have hunters who for some unknown reason would like to have all hunters tarred with the same brush as poachers. To me disgust for poaching does not need us running for cover or welcoming any connection between poaching and hunting. I am tired with being stirred in with lawbreakers and always being on the defensive as if I had done something wrong. My attitude is that there is nothing gained by restating what I consider to be obvious. Poaching is an offense against hunters .... period. And if someone wants to look at this story and point out what happens when wildlife is mis-managed, I welcome that half of the story that never gets told enough.3 points

I believe if you look into it, he ended up being off the preserve and the lion was lured out. That was shy he was cleared of all charges. So not illegal from the hunters perspective.3 points

Last year i analyzed the last 5 or so year history of trail cam photos taken over a mock scrape that i open up each year (same spot) and included activity from 1 1/2 to 4 1/2 yr. old bucks (both day and night activity) and the vast majority of bucks peeing over their hocks and using the licking branch was from 11/6 to 11/10. Attached photo is of 6pt. shot on 11/7/15 with crossbow mere feet from that mock scrape. I believe there is a pattern to the rut each year, in this instance it tooks years of photos taken at a fixed loaction on my property to narrow down a time window to hunt that works for me.3 points

I don't particularly have any interest in listening to you brag and looking at "trophies" you shot in a cage while driving around on top of a truck... Furthermore I don't enjoy reading your little PM's calling other people pu$$ies. You started off fairly well-mannered, looks like you came out of your shell. Now get.2 points

Holding horns this late is an indication of a mild winter, and more important...good feed. if they were stressed, the first thing gone would be the antlers.2 points

Tanning can take a while, as can the amount of work to be done. Any practiced taxidermist can put together a standard mount pretty quickly once the tanning, etc, is done, and you are next in the queue, but a real artist taxidermist will spend that little extra time making the piece incredible. It's why highly sought out taxidermists have a long turn around time. It really is a form of art, which is why there are as many bad mounts out there as good ones, and lots in-between. You might as well ask why a painting takes 'so long' for an artist. If any of you are ever interested in seeing some amazing work, check out the Taxidermy forums. Click a sub-forum "Deer and Gameheads", "Birds", etc, and look for the threads called "______ of the month". Or, in some forums, "____ of the week". There are a lot of gems in there. Here's a link to the Feb Game Heads of the Month. http://www.taxidermy.net/forum/index.php/topic,394901.0.html2 points

A big part is tannery. And timing at the Tannery and how much he uses a particular tannery. IE the tannery will no doubt try and speed along a guy who sends them more capes to tan. Same deal goes for your mount. If you're the Taxidermist and you have two guys that brought you a deer the same exact day but one client spends 15k a year with you, and the other client spends 200 a year then obviously the 15k/year client will get his mount done first. Gotta keep your bigger accounts happy so they continue to be your bigger accounts. It's nothing personal, just business. So at the end of the day it's the Tannery as well as Taxidermist work load as well as the relationship with your Taxidermist. Hope this helps. And if you chose the right Taxidermist, the results are always worth waiting for. You Can't Beat My Meat!2 points

You should get it back in April or May depending on how busy he is. Seems like 5 or 6 months is about average for NY, but it all depends on the taxi and the amount of work. Seeing as many people had a bad year this year, I doubt they're swamped with too much work. Some places like the Midwest take about a year on average. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

It looks like too clean a cut for that. It's not beard rot, however, That usually affects the whole beard and the rotted ends have a brownish color. Did you have some shells loaded with razor blades, Paulie ?..<<grin>>..2 points

Last year while walking a well used trail by my house this was lying on the ground a few feet off the trail clearly visible to anyone on the trail. Runners, mountain bikers, kids, dog walkers all passed by it . I expressed my amazement to my wife how no one picked it up , she thought it was weird that anyone would ....... Many would never pick up an antler anymore then deer droppings, not all share our passion for antlers .2 points

I can pretty much shoot whatever weight I want but generally stick to 48-55lbs. Plenty for pretty much anything in NA and easy to hold forever. I gap shoot so do hold for a while at times. I am sure you will be fine with 47lbs if that's your preference. I also like a lot of head weight. All of my recurves are tuned to shoot 200g heads with 50 or 75g inserts (total weight between 575-640). Not as flat as lighter arrows but they hit hard and fly like darts. Plus, the bows are quiet as a mouse.1 point
