  1. this pic was taken in Williamsville, non hunting area. I know there was an almost totally white 6 pointer in the area a few years ago, and I've seen a couple of piebald deer in the area, but this deer looks black and white. Anyone ever seen anything like this?

  4. Don't think I have a best time window. I've killed birds early and right up until the noon bell ringer. I can say that I'm sitting at o'dark thirty and listen to the woods wake up. I'd be afraid to go out later and wonder if I missed anything happening. And nothing better than having the woods come alive at dawn.

  6. Whatever gets them out there. Not every hunter has to be hardcore and dedicated. Casual hunters is fine as well. We need more hunters, period.

  8. My daughter wanted roast beast sammies tonight so my wife bought some Charlie The Butcher sliced beast, Au jus, rolls and coleslaw. As usual, it ROCKED! So simple; just heat the Au jus in a pan then drop the sliced beast in for a few minutes. Horseradish to taste........... Oh, and chased by a beer.

  16. Strangely, not a whole lot of luck right off the roost, seems like they usually catch up with the hens and drift off. I've had my best luck from 10:00-quitting time.

  20. Back in the day I killed many of my birds just off the roost. I did a lot of my hunting before work in the morning and my goal was always to be close enough to the roost to work the bird as soon as he flew down. Now that I have retired, my strategy has changed. Rather than crowd the roost and try to kill the bird when he first flies down, I hunt areas where I expect the gobbler to come looking for hens later in the morning, after the flurry of activity that takes place right after flydown. Now I'm killing most of my birds between 9:00 am and noon. I'm spending much less time running all over the woods and much more time sitting in a comfortable chair in a popup blind.

  21. Uncle Nicky, that's something I want to start doing myself, saving a fan or two. In all these years that have gone by, I tried a few times to have them dry on a cardboard, salted, etc. but, they ended up getting rather stenchy smell wise, so I gave up! I guess I have to try again since I do make a display for them as well.

  22. I have to disagree with Shawn. Not only is driving deer and bear legal in NY, but at one time it was the the "standard" method of hunting, at least if the southwestern part of NY. Much of the land was agricultural at that time and landowners would get together parties of 20 or more hunters and drive large areas for deer. In later years, since much of the land has become broken up into smaller parcels for recreational use, driving is not as practical as it once was. Some public lands have specific regulations, but if there is any regulation against driving deer on public land, I am unaware of it. Welcome to the forum and good luck !

  26. When it comes to getting a shoulder mount, one way you can get fast, cheap, and good, is if you learn how to do it yourself. Otherwise you will most likely need have to sacrifice at least one of the three. Most of us would choose to sacrifice the "fast", and that is the boat you find yourself in now. I have had 5 professionally done, by 4 different taxidermists. The guy that did my last one, two years ago, was the fastest at 5 months, with very good quality work, but also the most expensive. The previous guy (retired) did two for me, each taking 11 months to deliver. The quality was a bit lower, but so was the cost. The guy before that (retired) was much cheaper, about the same quality, and took 9 months to deliver. If you have family or a good friend in the business, you might be able to use that connection to get fast, cheap, and good. I was fortunate on my first one with that. My great-uncle, who was a "museum-quality" taxidermist, retired a few years after that. Not everyone has the same "likes" when it comes to judging a mount. Up close, the one my uncle did does not have the "details" of some of the others when it comes to the eyelashes, colors inside the nose, teeth, gums and such. From a distance however, it is the most life-like of any I have seen. He had a real talent for setting the eyes at just the right depth, and the ears at the right angle. That buck almost looks as alive today as he did when he really was, about 30 years ago.

  29. February 29'th only happens on leap years, so it would be impossible to find an antler two years in a row on the 29'th. Hence it's a leap-horn!

  35. Several friends of mine have had there deer from this past season mounted at a local taxi that is very popular(I'm sure you know who it is). After seeing their mounts, I just can't believe how crappy they look, the look like deer I guess, just not like living, anatomically correct deer. As long as they are happy, I guess that's all that matters...

  37. Abolish the EPA entirely? No. Drastically reduce the bureaucratic size of the EPA, and restrict the scope of it's power? Absolutely, yes. The EPA has become an unelected lawmaking body within the federal government. That's wrong, and should be stopped.

  38. about 4-5 weeks ago I was getting bucks on trail cams regularly. A bunch of you guys a few weeks ago were saying you were seeing antlers still attached to bucks. I hadn't seen any antlers walking on my cams in 3-4 weeks. I thought you guys were full of bologna. They must have dropped off my bucks. Wrong. Had a buck walk through the yard last night with antlers still attached. Fact is they must have just stopped posing in front of my camera. I probably walked around so much looking for their antlers that it made them walk somewhere else. That's life

  39. I've never had much luck saving turkey parts. Most got devoured by cats and mice when I kept them in the barn. Others got tossed or lost between moves and relationships. Fans and wings I'll save from year to year to dress up my dekes, but their life expectancy is short from being stuffed in a pack and left out in the elements throughout the season. I have a few old Mason jars and colored glass bottles I picked up on my hikes I fill with feathers. The only turkey parts I have around anymore are this one from 2 years ago that I turned into a wall hanger. Since then I ditched the call and striker and got his skull stuck to the lumber in it's place. That keeps all the turkey parts I care to keep conveniently in one place. When I score a bigger bird this spring I'll just swap out the parts and rotate these to the deke accessory bin.

  41. Only small scale compared to some producers on here. Hope to have 14 gallon of syrup, come seasons end. We ran out from 9, last season. Once family and friends get a taste, it seems you never have enough, LOL. Pics are from 11 oclock this morning. I had to count how many taps I did put out; 61 total. This whole maple thing can become addictive, as others have warned.
