this pic was taken in Williamsville, non hunting area. I know there was an almost totally white 6 pointer in the area a few years ago, and I've seen a couple of piebald deer in the area, but this deer looks black and white. Anyone ever seen anything like this?6 points

Presented with apologies to " Karnak the Magnificent" for borrowing some of his material. "Mount Baldy".....What Yul Brynner's wife did on their wedding night. " Chicken Sukiyaki".....Japan's last surviving Kamikaze pilot. " Wicker Box"....What Elmer Fudd would like to do to Jennifer Lopez.6 points

Don't think I have a best time window. I've killed birds early and right up until the noon bell ringer. I can say that I'm sitting at o'dark thirty and listen to the woods wake up. I'd be afraid to go out later and wonder if I missed anything happening. And nothing better than having the woods come alive at dawn.4 points

Whatever gets them out there. Not every hunter has to be hardcore and dedicated. Casual hunters is fine as well. We need more hunters, period.3 points

Congrats on a dandy buck!!! Like you, I happened to get a 10 pointer back in the 2013 bow season, my first as well. Great feeling for sure.3 points

My daughter wanted roast beast sammies tonight so my wife bought some Charlie The Butcher sliced beast, Au jus, rolls and coleslaw. As usual, it ROCKED! So simple; just heat the Au jus in a pan then drop the sliced beast in for a few minutes. Horseradish to taste........... Oh, and chased by a beer.3 points

I was planning on it, but I have a flat tire on my Schwinn...Besides that the basket in front of the handlebars won't hold enough beer for the trip.2 points

Strangely, not a whole lot of luck right off the roost, seems like they usually catch up with the hens and drift off. I've had my best luck from 10:00-quitting time.2 points

Back in the day I killed many of my birds just off the roost. I did a lot of my hunting before work in the morning and my goal was always to be close enough to the roost to work the bird as soon as he flew down. Now that I have retired, my strategy has changed. Rather than crowd the roost and try to kill the bird when he first flies down, I hunt areas where I expect the gobbler to come looking for hens later in the morning, after the flurry of activity that takes place right after flydown. Now I'm killing most of my birds between 9:00 am and noon. I'm spending much less time running all over the woods and much more time sitting in a comfortable chair in a popup blind.2 points

Uncle Nicky, that's something I want to start doing myself, saving a fan or two. In all these years that have gone by, I tried a few times to have them dry on a cardboard, salted, etc. but, they ended up getting rather stenchy smell wise, so I gave up! I guess I have to try again since I do make a display for them as well.2 points

I have to disagree with Shawn. Not only is driving deer and bear legal in NY, but at one time it was the the "standard" method of hunting, at least if the southwestern part of NY. Much of the land was agricultural at that time and landowners would get together parties of 20 or more hunters and drive large areas for deer. In later years, since much of the land has become broken up into smaller parcels for recreational use, driving is not as practical as it once was. Some public lands have specific regulations, but if there is any regulation against driving deer on public land, I am unaware of it. Welcome to the forum and good luck !2 points

When it comes to getting a shoulder mount, one way you can get fast, cheap, and good, is if you learn how to do it yourself. Otherwise you will most likely need have to sacrifice at least one of the three. Most of us would choose to sacrifice the "fast", and that is the boat you find yourself in now. I have had 5 professionally done, by 4 different taxidermists. The guy that did my last one, two years ago, was the fastest at 5 months, with very good quality work, but also the most expensive. The previous guy (retired) did two for me, each taking 11 months to deliver. The quality was a bit lower, but so was the cost. The guy before that (retired) was much cheaper, about the same quality, and took 9 months to deliver. If you have family or a good friend in the business, you might be able to use that connection to get fast, cheap, and good. I was fortunate on my first one with that. My great-uncle, who was a "museum-quality" taxidermist, retired a few years after that. Not everyone has the same "likes" when it comes to judging a mount. Up close, the one my uncle did does not have the "details" of some of the others when it comes to the eyelashes, colors inside the nose, teeth, gums and such. From a distance however, it is the most life-like of any I have seen. He had a real talent for setting the eyes at just the right depth, and the ears at the right angle. That buck almost looks as alive today as he did when he really was, about 30 years ago.2 points

February 29'th only happens on leap years, so it would be impossible to find an antler two years in a row on the 29'th. Hence it's a leap-horn!2 points

I second this. If I couldn't hunt the opener I'd wait a week. Let things settle down a bit but even then it's tough sledding. The pressure doesn't let up much in NY1 point

Fletch, Do you use hog rings or just tie them? I bought the pliers and a bag of ring (pretty cheap) and I love how they work to close the casings and attach the hanger strings.1 point

The difficulty is that any spending bill that works its way through Congress ends up with so much 'pork' attached to it that the original project, and its intent, is essentially lost by the time it comes to a vote. Both parties are to blame for these kinds of shenanigans. The difference between the Socialists and the Conservatives is that the Socialists don't care about how much "extra" something costs the taxpayers. This doesn't work on the level of the individual Democrat though, because I tried to add the cost of a $15k new/used truck on the bill for a $12k bathroom remodel I did last year just to make a point with my customer. I put him in the role of the taxpayer while I played the role of the federal government. We got a good laugh out of it and he bought me dinner, but he also understood what I was getting at. Line item veto power would help tremendously to solve the "pork problem", and to keep budgets focused on their original intent, assuming that someone is in charge who actually understands that there is a problem.1 point

Good call, that's one of the reasons why I made the change too. I have one of these, http://www.amazon.com/Winware-Aluminum-Roast-Pan-Inch/dp/B001CIEJT2/ref=sr_1_1?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1456502758&sr=1-1&keywords=roasting+pan&refinements=p_n_feature_three_browse-bin%3A3088227011 and I added a tap to drain it easier. If it goes well I will add a second pan and a warmer/feeder pan.1 point
