I mounted my 6th and final deer from last season yesterday. Now, I just got to keep an eye on him while he dries and then do the finishing work... The pose we were going for... Unfortunately, the original cape starting slipping bad when I first attempted to do the mount a few weeks ago. I had to find a replacement cape that would match the light orangish color of the buck... Also, I remounted my October bow buck last weekend...7 points

on my camp. I have been moving mounts down to camp each trip, space is becoming scarce and its starting to get the appearance of being cluttered with everything. Basically there is no open / usable corner, flat top cabinet, and even open wall space is getting scarce. The even bigger deciding factor of needing to add on is what is still at the taxidermists or in the freezer to be dropped off yet. I'm thinking its going to be 12x 16 with an 8 ft deck on the west side, full 8 ft. walls and will go with a cathedral ceiling to gain me more sq. footage on the gable ends. some of the stuff that made the trip last night this one is on the built in dresser in the master bedroom. this guy is setting on what will likely now become a call display cabinet until I can build one with enough room. this one is setting on a stand in the living room until I can design and build a corner elevated glass case to put him in. the photo behind him was taken 3 weeks prior to me killing him and about 200 yards from the spot. at the top of the stairs for now, I do not care for it there at all but it was the only available space even bookcases and the grandkids bedroom walls are not exempt at this point.5 points

Organizations and meetings have never been my thing. I've never been one to hoot and holler hoping someone would listen or hear me. Set the rules, tell me what I can shoot, and when I can shoot it and I'll comply. The DEC has been pretty consistent in accomplishing that so I'm not to concerned. Deer hunting doesn't consume my life anymore so I just go with the flow. My free time gets used for much more enjoyable things rather than sitting around listening to whatever other petty things everyone else is so upset about. It's all good on my end, and I can always find something else to do if in fact changes in deer hunting ever make it un-enjoyable for me any longer.3 points

Fellow beagle owner here. Mine wears a standard web collar around the house and a no pull type harness when we walk. Now he used to get out of the harness a number of times when he was younger. In fact I had a piece of para cord that went from the leash to his neck collar as a safety for when he got out harness he would still be connected to the leash. I have no idea how'd he get out of the harness as i could not get him back in without taking it all the way off . He also broke out of his crate two times when I attempted to crate train him..... Beagle are escape artists , keep the collar tight and your sneakers , a treat , leash and flashlight close by !3 points

I finally got a chance to snap some pictures at work. Let me start off by saying, No I cannot get any growlers for free, otherwise I would have a ton of them. I will take more pics and post up soon. I work for a company that screen prints on bottles of all kinds. Here are a few pics of growlers. We are also getting into doing spirits bottles. Our main customer produces plastic bottles that we print on as well.3 points

Once again this year I will be running the youth spring turkey hunt contest, with the help of Paula and Wooly as judges. If any of the members take a youth out and they are successful please take the time to participate in the contest. Lets grow this contest and get the youngsters involved!! This thread will serve as the official rules and entry thread for the youth hunt. This year there will be three judges... Wooly, Paula and myself. We will judge the contestants based on the following rules... 1. The youth hunter or mentor must submit a picture of the youth or of the two of them with their harvest. 2. A brief story of the hunt, preferably written by the youth, must be submitted. 3. You must post both your picture and story on this thread only!!! PLEASE DO NOT START ANOTHER THREAD FOR THE CONTEST ENTRY!! 4. The deadline for submitting your entry is 12:00am ( midnight ) on April 29. So if you harvest a bird make sure to enter it on this thread before then!! The winner will be chosen based on a combination of best picture and story submitted. The size of the bird WILL NOT be taken into account, although we encourage that you post the birds stats. As far as the judges are concerned all birds harvested are a trophy!! There will be some great prizes given away this year and we wish everyone a safe and successful hunt!!! GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!! This is not run by HuntingNY.com2 points

Anybody been bullhead fishing yet ? I know it's a little early, but with the mild spring I thought they might start biting a bit earlier than usual. The bullhead fishing hasn't been as good the last few years on the ponds that I normally fish, but my rabbit hunting buddy has got permission for himself and me on a big private pond near where he lives that supposedly has big bullheads in it. We're looking forward to giving it a try, perhaps this weekend. Bullhead fishing is simple bank fishing at it finest, sitting on a bucket with your rods propped up on a forked stick, waiting for the tip to start nodding. Good eating, too, dusted in flour or Bisquick and fried, or sautéed in butter. My Dear Old Mother, God Bless her, would KILL for a mess of bullheads !2 points

If you're really looking to get traditional, just try running them down and bashing their skull in with a rock. I'm sick of the people that have decided their personal level of technology in weapons, is the most modern that is acceptable. According to them, everybody using anything after that is trying to destroy the sport.2 points

How far do you want to shoot ? If you are willing to limit your shots to 40-45 yards, any buffered, 3" or 3.5" copper plated load of #4 to #6 shot should do the trick... If you feel the need to stretch your barrel farther, then play around with the hevi blends or the Win Longbeard XRs, to name a couple. I don't shoot past 40 yards anymore, and just about ANY 3" 1 7/8 oz. or 2 oz. load of 4s, 5s or 6s gives me a sure kill pattern at that range with either my Kick's .665 Gobblin Thunder tube on my Rem 11-87 or the fixed full choke tube on my 35 year old Rem 1100 3" mag... I kill most of my turkeys with Win XX copper plated turkey loads or Federal premium( lead) heavyweight loads... I used to favor # 4 shot, but have switched to #6 shot lately, and I can't see any difference in performance on game. I have never owned a 3.5" gun..Those big long shells scare me...<<grin>>..2 points

Here is a blast from the past the revolutionary Remington Nylon 66, in this case the magazine fed version the Nylon 77. Nothing fancy here, these were one of the first factory firearms to use synthetic materials (NYLON) in large percentage for it's construction. This 77 is my Coon hunting rifle that I carried many nights and I can say this is one tough rifle that has seen some hard going but always came through when the time came. It actually still looks pretty good considering the beating it has taken. I liked the magazine fed model because it was quick to load when needed as I do not like carrying it loaded being dragged by my dogs and stumbling around through the woods at night. Very lightweight, good reliability, hunting accuracy and an abuse taker for sure the ultimate Coon hunter's gun. Al2 points

I think full inclusion was prevented by a small minority of mostly 20-40 year old, male bow-hunters who were very concerned that increased hunting pressure from women, young, elderly, disabled, family men and others without a lot of extra time for practice, would infringe negatively on their own hunting experiences. Much like the REBs during the Civil War, these folks fought a courageous delaying action, but on moral grounds, they were clearly on the wrong side of the fight. If you ever find yourself in a conflict and wonder what is the right side morally, just think "What would Jesus do ?". Hint: He died on a Cross and the side He backed has never and will never loose a conflict. The rules of man are fleeting and often riddled with mistakes, but those from up above are eternal. I hold no grudge against these folks. I do not wish to take away their rights to use conventional archery tackle throughout archery season, even though I believe a crossbow is a significantly more effective weapon for killing deer, and antlerless ones in particular. I do believe there is more chance of wounding deer with conventional archery tackle. Although I always wish to use the most lethal, legal means to put meat in the freezer, I respect the rights of those who wish to challenge themselves a bit in order to get that done, especially if they put in the added time and effort. Now that this temporary "civil-war" between us appears to be nearly finished, it is time for us to unite so that our hunting tradition may continue for many more generations. Giving each other the finger might not be a good way to get that done. Happy Easter to all, and Go Yankees.2 points

She's doing OK turkeyfeathers. Thank you for asking. The stitches were fine, she managed to get it bleeding and scared the crap outta us. Have to watch her like a hawk now that the bandages are off. It's healing pretty well but she's trying to do what dogs do, lick the wound to heal it. Can't let her do that so there's a whole lotta "Leave It!" sounding off in the house.2 points

What would I be willing to give, to be able to hunt throughout archery season with a crossbow, and for my daughters to also be able to participate in the next several years rather than waiting until they are 16 ? Certainly some cash, probably in the neighborhood of $1000, for new equipment alone. We would likely be able to harvest enough deer, specifically antlerless ones, in the southern zones where the DEC has been struggling to get populations in check, to give some venison to the "feed the hungry" programs. I would also give some more of my time and money hunting earlier up in the cash-strapped northern zone. I see more money poured into the state economy, more hungry folks fed healthy food, and improved control over the deer population. What I don't see is a down side. It is awesome to see the fast accelerating approach of "full inclusion", increased youth hunting, and classification of a crossbow as archery equipment.2 points

As my username implies, I am from Louisiana. Years ago when I first got online I was invited to a hunting forum, it was spring of the year, so Laturkeyhtr seemed appropriate and has stuck with me. I am a deer hunter first simply because there is more meat deer and there weren't any turkeys when I started hunting. I became interested in turkeys when our stated made a turkey release near my families place. I used to be quite active in the NWTF, but not anymore. I served six years on the Louisiana's state board of the NWTF. I am a lifetime member of the QDMA and the NRA. I thoroughly believe in wildlife conservation and the part that hunters play. I am father to two wonderful kids and have introduced them to the hunting lifestyle. One of my most favorite things to do is take first time hunters out for a turkey hunt and not necessarily just kids but adults too. Don't be too disappointed it I don't post a lot just not in the habit. I was made aware this morning from one of your members that another long time friend was on here. "Pygmy" told me that "Maytom" was frequenting this site. I have had the pleasure to meet both and have even hunted with Pygmy. Maytom is just or used to be hilariouis and was also a fine woodworker. Why not for anyone who wants them....if I want to use one I should be able to its a perfectly lethal weapon to take big game in ny with...shoots a arrow off of a string....and is not repeatable fast....no different than a compound...instead of external release its built into the action...it's archery equipment Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk1 point

But you can get one of those rimfire headspace guages that measure the thickness of the rims so you can sort ammo, if you haven't already. My low end 22 is a Ruger 77/22 wood stocked w/o sights and a bushnel banner 3-9x. With that and CCI Green tag, it'll pin dimes at 50 every time. Some yahoo's were making fun of me and that gun at the range when I was a kid. They were blasting away with their AR's they were scared of and hitting nothing. Range Master got behind me on my spotting scope. Guess those guys shut up after getting tired of the RM calling out "10 Ring!". When ya get a good gun/ammo combo, Keep It!!1 point

I would soil test now so if you need to lime you have time for it to get into the soil. Ph can vary due to elevation . Water runoff and other things can change soil in a short distance. To answer your question Doc it is low on my list of concerns. Would I attend a meeting, sure if it was within a reasonable drive, not 6 plus hours. Why because my opinion does not matter to them. Hundreds maybe even thousands of hunters have stated how low the deer population has been yet they ignore the people in the woods. So what's the point of driving X miles and wasting my time money and effort to have no affect! Will the DEC listen, yes but they do not act, except to defend why they are killing so many deer as they seem to think we are over populated. Is hunting for deer a concern, yes, new recruitment yes but apparently NYS would rather use snipers instead of hunters to keep deer in check, another fail on DEC. They failed on doe only for first 2 weeks in bow. They failed on keeping hunters happy, yes this is part of what they do otherwise antler restrictions, crossbow and early muzzleloader seasons would not be an issue. Maybe I just see things in a different light. DEC are just pawns of the political establishment and have to listen to them not hunters. And all they care about is keeping the population down and acting like they care by using antler restrictions and crossbows to appease the masses but that does not seem to be working as the masses care more about having a deer in the woods vs using a crossbow during bow season when no deer are present. Should I go and sit in front of a DEC office and protest how bad they are managing the deer? Sure if I want them following me every place I hunt, no thanks! I would be better off protesting the Police with a sign that says F the Police in front of the Police station! (Yea NO! I wont be doing that anytime soon either!) Zero tolerance yep that is about where I am right now with the DEC and how they manage deer. They suck at it! Unless you want no deer in your area like the insurance companies then they are great! Sorry for the rant, I was young I needed the money!1 point

That brings another thing has come to mind regarding activism. Statistics show that as population segment, most of us are getting a lot older, with some changes in passions and energy levels. Yes there are some issues that hit my hot buttons, and do edge hunting issues up the list of priorities a bit. I will say that the Safe Law got me pumped up pretty good, but that is a constitutional issue and probably does deserve a higher level on my priorities. Straight deer management issues don't even come close to that one. But over all, I am not as excitable as I used to be, and age probably has a factor in that. So I no longer feel that I have to attend every meeting that someone wants to hold.1 point

I think that most lost the whole point of this thread. As I went through the endless partial list of some real important responsibilities that we have as citizens and parents and providers, the thing is that it is absolutely impossible to be expert at all of these things. It is impossible to be the ultimate "joiners" and activists. And so you really do have to prioritize and accept that not every important issue is going to receive its maximum amount of your attention. And so you have to prioritize. So the question is just where does deer management education sit on your list of priorities amongst all the truly important civic and personal activities and events and areas of study in your life? Perhaps 64 attendees was not really all that bad.1 point

Perhaps part of the issue is an individual's ability or inability to defer to a presentation of a course of action that doesn't match up with their expectations 100%. I've had a pair of potent beers, so please excuse the intrusion of opinion, but somewhere along the line, we (and that's a general we) blurred the benefit of compromise. Many of the organizations exist as another level of representation because of a loss of trust in our first tier, our elected officials. That might play into an inability to defer to "experts" and/or officials. Please excuse the ramble... I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk1 point
