  1. Tough picking my favorites from this set, these guys were very cooperative and I ended up with hundreds of shots of them.

  2. My wife (donna) enjoys drawing dogs using charcoal/pastels. Using .JPG files originals as the model, she draws portraits onto 9 X 12 art paper. Being impressed with her work, as a husband should be, I told her about the guys here with hunting dogs and asked, “How much do you want per drawing?” So if anyone is interested it’s $50 including tax, mailing and handling. Anyone interested can contact me through profile messaging for more information. I'll send you my email address through private messages. Comments to this thread are also welcome.

  3. You overlook the fact that talking about this doesn't follow any of this hierarchy (unlike lead free ammo): Hunting New York - NY Empire State Hunting Forum - Bow Hunting, Fishing, Bear, Deer → Main → General Chit Chat

  10. Wrong option...Cramming antlerless-only down the throat of buck hunters is not going to work.. It may backfire on them..The earn a buck option is a much better plan IMHO, because it gives the buck hunters ( of which there are many) a viable option.. It wouldn't matter to me, personally, because as long as I can shoot a doe or two a year for the freezer, I could care less if I EVER shoot another buck, but to MANY hunters, shooting a buck is a very important goal. To a significant number of those hunters, shooting a BIG buck is very important, and doe-only regulations are not going to change that. I suspect a backlash involving hunters refusing to shoot does is more likely.

  11. I don't know Dom, I haven't seen a pic posted here yet that looks like it was made by anything other than a buck. It's a little ironic you should post the bear thought today though. I went out for a short hike this evening and found fresh claw marks in this tree from what I assume would have been a bear. I looked them over pretty closely and could tell something with some weight to it had been hanging from there. It was certainly no coon or porky. We don't see many bear around my area except one or two that pass through each spring. Seeing this kinda got me feeling all excited hoping to bump into the sucker while I had the camera. I'm hoping he sticks around and shows himself now that the weather is turning nicer.

  12. If you want a debate about predators, the carrying capacity of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the unnatural situation that created this opportunity for wolves, and wolves in general, posting such propaganda is not helpful. WY government has a negative attitude towards wolves. However, it is disturbing that a WY wildlife official will anthropomorphize them to affect public sentiment. Predators kill. It is not "sport". It is deadly serious. They kill more than they can eat because food is not always available. Kill a bunch and you have food for a long while. A carcass is an ephemeral thing. A whole range of scavengers will strip it in a short time. I've seen adult deer carcasses stripped by just ravens in several hours. The "mostly calves" comment is over the top. According to the RMEF "Calf: Baby elk". Those "calves" are a couple hundred pounds in March, not babies. The area where they feed elk at Jackson is a man-made disaster, an elk zoo. The spokesman is "concerned" about the wolves behavior but apparently not so much for unnatural concentration that created this situation. The reason the elk are stuck there and must be fed hay is because humans blocked their migration route. The elk are effectively confined in the valley, where they depend on humans to bring hay. If elk could migrate, they would be spread out across the landscape.

  13. Well, if you consider a Toyota Prius a blind... These were sort of a unique scenario. We spent the weekend at my in-laws who are the last house on a dead end road. A couple hundred yards past their house the beavers have blocked a culvert and created a really nice beaver swamp. The water is actually up onto the edge of the pavement in a couple spots. I took my wife's car down and sat there shooting these from the window. What's funny is I spent the day before at Montezuma but got better shots shooting these birds from the car. I should also mention that maneuvering a 600mm f/4 inside a Prius is a bit challenging.

  17. That's right. I need an atlatl. The DEC will surely open an Atlatl season in late September. They have to define the regs in such a way to include simple spear for those that regard using the launching stick too modern. LOL

  18. Or just obey the law, its not worth it for many reasons..... My best friend(my father) and his best friend were just killed in a car accident coming home from fishing on March 11, 2016 in Farmington, NY when a man with his 4 children in the vehicle, ran a red light while speeding, on a road within the town he lived and I'm sure he had traveled dozens of times before... Its just not worth it Just be observant and cautious of others....

  20. I know you didn't ask me, but I'll give my opinion....it'll never happen but I would give up the first two weeks of archery to recurve and longbow only and then follow that with compound and crossbow season. I'd do the same with muzzleloader season, the ones now are just the same as centerfire and most better then shotguns.

  23. Actually, I find it quite difficult to take good quality pics of a mount where everything is in proportion. I may be a bit biased, but...I believe my mounts are more realistic than what most people around here get back from their taxidermists. Honestly, most people don't know what to look for in a quality mount; if it resembles a deer they are happy with it. Not me...

  25. I mounted my 6th and final deer from last season yesterday. Now, I just got to keep an eye on him while he dries and then do the finishing work... The pose we were going for... Unfortunately, the original cape starting slipping bad when I first attempted to do the mount a few weeks ago. I had to find a replacement cape that would match the light orangish color of the buck... Also, I remounted my October bow buck last weekend...

  26. Fracking Bans were not based on any scientific evidence. Now that we have more of it, we begin to see how emotion and deceit were implemented to keep energy costs high, in order to make "green" energy look affordable. http://dailysignal.com/2016/03/21/calls-for-fracking-bans-ignore-sound-science/?utm_source=heritagefoundation&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=morningbell&mkt_tok=3RkMMJWWfF9wsRonu6rBdu%2FhmjTEU5z16OovWKS3gJ541El3fuXBP2XqjvpVQcNkN7DHRw8FHZNpywVWM8TIJNIUt9h1PwzhCG8%3D

  30. When one gets bitten by the hunting shooting sport game the quest for success and perfection seems to be a never ending battle. My gun-reloading room started out quite modestly many years ago and for the most part served me well for for a long time. Got my reloading and gun work done for the most part with no problem. But as the years rolled by I just kept accumulating more and more stuff and order and neatness started to wane to the point where doing work and finding equipment started started to become a chore, basically the room had become an outright "mess". I made do with the situation for a long time but finally enough was enough! There was only one thing to do to solve the problem and that was a complete makeover and that meant out with the old and in with the new. I started late last summer and puttered around over the months a little at a time hopefully getting it right for the long haul. The 50 year old old Sears steel legged work benches that my presses and reloading and repair equipment took up shop on were removed. The glass doored gun cabinets and wall hanging gun racks were removed. inefficient shelves removed. I went to Lowes and purchased a row of low cost wall and base cabinets along with a counter top for my cleaning-repair-scope mounting work area and to make some organized storage. New wall shelving and tool cabinets to store all tools in their proper place and make them easily found and accessed. I replaced the old Sears work benches with two Harbor Freight wood workers benches. They were a pain to assemble, the drawers are pretty rough operating but they seem real solid and so far I like them. Because of the safe act all gun storage is now handled by safes. The room is pretty much ship shape now and everything has it's place and is stored properly where it can be found. My reloading equipment is set up now for quick change or complete removal off the benches with Lee and RCBS mounting plate systems. I picked up a handy portable reloading stand made by Frankford Arsenal, it has folding leaf wings and is very light weight, it is easily moved anywhere in the room and works great for assisting or for just stand alone reloading. I had a good time over the winter taking care of a bunch of long overdue upgrades and scope mountings on my firearms, it was real nice to have everything where it belongs and easily found for a change. Some photos of the aftermath, still some minor tweaking going on and a little congested yet but a heck of a lot better than what it was.

  38. I was there right in the middle of the compound fight, and I remember that the prime argument against compounds was that it was the first step toward inclusion of all kinds of things that were never intended to be called bowhunting. The argument was that it would serve as a precedent. I was all for compounds, and pretty much brushed that argument aside. Well imagine my surprise when here today, I see that they were absolutely correct. The compound set a precedent where just about anything can now be included in bow season. Lets look at all of the things that have been added since the compound and can anyone argue that the compound is now the primary precedent for the justification of the crossbow. I don't think so. Just take a look at the reply just before this one. So yet another precedent has been established for incorporating more and more weapons that simply are not bows. Now in the Northern Zone, bows and muzzleloaders are used side by side.....firearms inclusion in a bow season. The late bow season also now hosts muzzle loaders. Another precedent has been established and accepted. So now the DEC has pretty much accepted that whenever they get a bug up their butt, muzzleloader inclusion is on the table anywhere they decide to include it ..... bowhunters be damned. Why not ..... the precedent has been set and accepted. So, is it really all that far before rifles are accepted? Oh wait, that precedent has been set also. Yes, I have to admit I was wrong. Those old-timers that argued against the compound were right. There is something to that precedent thing and there is proof now. We don't lose anything all at once. It is always through a bite her and a bite there. but the result comes out the same.

  41. Predators have their place and conservation should be more incorporated with anyone's appreciation and understanding of the outdoors. What percentage of our whitetail population gets killed by coyotes? Whether it's sport killing or not the predator prey cycle is a viscous one. At least the dec says they have no negligible impact? 42. They had to go with the muzzloader stamp for crossbow , as a new licence requires a course, but laws dictate you must have hunted with said implement for 3 years before you can teach a course. So no seperate x box course was possible, putting under muzzleloader circumvented the nys bowhunting lobbiests. It should of been made archery equipment from the get go,this just shows powers of lobbiests .. all for making it archery equipment and the couse teaches responsible shot placement, ranges, tracking and recovery of hemoraging game.. Every x bow hunter I know is a bow hunter. So including in entire season is not going to affect much here locally, having the bow course will eliminate the oh its. Just like a gun so I'll buy it crowd. Overall this is good commonsense legislation!!
