Since The Mermaid and and I have been together, she has talked about a gun that belonged to her father that was supposedly buried SOMEWHERE in her sister's cluttered upstairs, but hadn't been seen in years. Well, Sister Gracie called yesterday and said she had found the gun(s)..It turned out that there two of them. I hurried over to identify the long lost treasures. She brought them down the stairs wrapped in old pillowcases. The first one was an old Stevens M94 16 gauge single shot marked Wards Western Field. It has seen lots of use, and the bluing and case hardening are mostly gone.It has a plastic stock and forend, and the buttplate is missing. It seems mechanically sound and functional, but hardly rates as a valuable heirloom. It looks like the gun that kept in the milkhouse for years and years to deal with varmints around the barn. The OTHER one, however, was a jewel... It is a Winchester M1892 saddle ring carbine in 32-20. Despite years of neglect, it is still in at least NRA "Good" condition. The stock is sound , with a few dents and digs but no cracks. The barrel bluing is pretty good, with some surface rust and minor pitting. The receiver has more bluing wear, mostly from handling and carrying, I suspect. The screw heads are not buggered..It doesn't appear to have been taken apart by an amateur gunsmith. As far as I can tell the bore and rifling are in good shape, albeit in need of a good cleaning. The action is tight and crisp. All parts appear original. It was made in 1912. I am looking forward to giving a good (gentle) cleaning. I don't intend to shoot it. Perhaps we can find a nice place to display it and someday one of The Mermaid's sons or Grandsons will inherit it.11 points

I went back in this past weekend, 4/14-17/16 to camp and scout. I was the first canoe camper into Lows Lake this year, probably because the gate was closed and I had to cart my outfit in 3/4 mile to the put in. I surprised a good size deer standing in some water/grass but other than that saw no tracks or sign from the canoe. I spent some time around Tomar Mt again, not much sign, some trails but no old rubs. Again, I'm not your best or hardest hunter, pretty much just enjoy the big woods and the Adirondacks. I'll be heading back in come fall for sure. The wood stove came in handy, temps down to the low 20's in the morning. Canoe and campsite, Virgin Timber Landing west end of Lows Lake, 15' wood canvas Chestnut Chum, my tent evening with Tomar Mt in the background, Daytime scouting, ice had just left the lake so I hugged the shoreline. Pack contains my lunch, a set of clothes and some birch bark, matches punk wood for a quick emergency fire. Good trip.5 points

I only got one UGLY reliable turkey gun and you inspired me to waste a shot this morning on some of my finest art work, lol Now I remember why I'm happy to only shoot this thing once or twice a year! God damn that hurts! 25 yds and all is well with me for this season.3 points

I got up to the Adirondacks last weekend for some more shed hunting. I found a nice 4 point right away. Maybe a mid 130s buck, but pretty good for that area. (#53, 4/15/16) Fleur saving me the trouble of having to pick it up myself... Fleur found this ancient 4 point buried in the leaves. It looked to be 8-10 years old, maybe even older. Hard to believe the porcupines didn't get it. (#54, 4/15/16) Fleur came through again deep in a spruce swamp... It happened so fast I wasn't able to get good pictures. (#55, 4/15/16) I managed to find one more for myself at the end of the day. (#56, 4/15/16) Group photo:3 points

After a few years of searching for a Savage 10ML-II and not wanting to pay the 1,000 price tag they have come to be the past few years. I found one Saturday at the gun show in Syracuse for a very reasonable price. Could not be happier! I took the breech plug out and found everything to be pres tine. Only problem I had was getting the vent-liner out of the breech plug. The prior owner must have forgot to ant-seize the threads. Calling savage to get a new breech plug on order. My next test will to be to locate some IMR 4759 or some N110.2 points

Well this came back and is actually bigger than I remember. This is the only buck I have ever seen while hunting. Not surprising I guess since this last season was my first. I love the hole towards the end of the right antler. Another neat thing was a scar on his cheek the taxidermist said went most of the way through his skin. It all adds character. I put it on a piece of old oak that I pulled out of my brothers house during a remodel. We are guessing the board is at least 100 years old but probably much older.2 points

Thanks Grampy I do get alot of enjoyment up there at Lows, and with no wind it was great to be back. I scouted around and found a good supply of beaverwood for this falls trip too. I haven't fished Lows in many years but back in the day the floating bog was the place to be for bass. My campsite was close to that portage over to the Oswegatchie. My son and I did pretty good with the brookies above the falls one year, but we paddled in from Inlet. Thanks2 points

I know every am I went to listen for gobbles bofore work I have heard them this year.Today there was none and my brother inlaw said yesterday was very few.I hope not thats one of the best thing about spring hunting is waking up and hearing them roar. That really cements kids for the long day!!!2 points

And not a fan. Over the years I've noticed a few times that birds a few days prior and after a full moon tend to get tight lipped. Talking to my brother he agreed He and Doc Pellham ( a few may have known him ) hunted quite a bit together and on one particular day had birds who sat in the tree tops nary a gobble until almost 10 and then the entire tree tops erupted. So my opinion to anyone going out for the youth hunt , don't give up hope if no gobbles at " go time ". Sit tight , birds may just be wonky with the moon and not touch off til later morning.2 points

I have been a diehard Mathew's owner for over 20 years now. (2 bows) But, after going to the Sportsman's show in Hamburg last month, and stopping at the S&S booth, I think I may make a switch to the "ELITE" brand now. Sooo, a new bow will be in store for me before the start of our bow season this fall.2 points

I love the longbeard xr #4s out of my 535. i have the same pattern as you at 65 yards. Picked up a box for my old mans 3" turkey gun and shot that yesterday. They seem to be an amazing shell. Have yet to kill a bird with them yet, but i expect good results. All longbeard xr shells: 1st pic my 3.5" #4 @ 30 yrd 2nd pic my 3.5" #4 @ 65 yards 3rd pic Dads 3" #5 @ 25 yards2 points

I too have found that full moon nights can keep birds on the roost a bit longer, in the morning. Looks like a good morning, weather wise for the young hunters on Saturday. Should be no problem if you have to wait them out a while. Best of luck to all who are participating!2 points

Here is an eight point I shot in 2016 Winter Bow after boiling and bleaching. I put electric tape on bases to protect them from peroxide.2 points

Pretty sure most got that. Some just chose to exploit it when they seen a glimmer of last chance hope. My bad for derailing.... Back to the dove hunting chatter that will change this country for the better.2 points

If I dig up several thousand from around my shooting bench, with authentic dirt on them, would they be worth more?2 points

roughly $2000ish.......pretty sure they can do it without you even knowing they did it as far as messing the existing lawn up.2 points

Depends what you're willing to spend, I think I have 100 loaded Stingers on hand..........for the right price I'd empty them.2 points

I've been collecting used toilet paper rolls since I was 17. You never KNOW what may have value some day. I keep them in the attic right next to my belly button lint collection. I'm starting to run out of storage space, but I'd hate to sell them for less than they might be worth a few years from now.2 points

What are you missing....? Maybe the stories from 200 individual home invaders stopped dead in their tracks... OR.... Maybe they were all misses..Mrs.. or missed completely. If only those casings could talk, I'm sure they'd have a lot of stories to tell! You can't put a price tag on sentimental value!2 points

And as far as your feelings about what people "need", it's a bill of rights, not a bill of needs. I'll decide what I need and if I have the right to have it, I'll get it. Nobody's paranoid, delusional, childish fears, trump my rights.1 point

This was my go too,Charles daily 3 1/2 pump.Great gun and still have it.Its what my nephew uses.ONLY downside is shooting 3 1/2 shells because its so damn light, but when a birds in front of you you wont feel it.....tilll about 15-20 mins after This is what I upgraded too a few years back. Both slam birds like the hammer of thor,Either gun shoots magblends good but they shoot longbeards a touch better.1 point

Today is the day that NYS residents vote in the presidential primaries, both Democrat and Republican. It's a 'closed' primary, so you have to be registered for one party or the other to vote today. Not a political post, just a public service announcement.1 point

I'm all for it. I've hunted in quite a few states that allow all-day hunting, not too many folks make a day out of it, most guys like to hunt the mornings because birds usually gobble harder right before fly-down. I've killed my share of birds in the afternoon, lots of times hens & gobblers will meet up in a field late afternoon before heading for the roost. You just have to be there when the birds show up.1 point

Hang on now….I have about 300 of those red, plastic caps that my son burned up, in his cap gun, when he was like 6. I might just offer a trade……..The caps are the reloadable ones.1 point

I appreciate the input Mike. Thanks for making people in that area aware of issues beyond the presidential primaries. That's what it's about: making people aware, and getting them to the polls.1 point

I used to enjoy it when I had the time to spare. Nowdays I just dont, and it has become something that sucks up time I really could be using doing something constructive instead of riding around burning gas for a couple of hours at a crack. It has nothing to do with hating being outside or anything like that.1 point

http://www.prbullet.com/s-breech.htm I'm not a fan of Cecil's but looks like he makes a breech plug for the savage and has vent liners too. I think there are a couple of guys over on Dougs message board that make them too.1 point

Use different target spots for each shot. It'll save you a ton of money. I have a 5-spot target on an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of paper that I print up off my computer that I use and that works great. I have to really screw up ugly-bad in order to smash arrows.1 point

The hunting shows are a lot like the woodworking shows or the home improvement shows: They make the end result look easy, without showing the prep, the setup, and the knowledge required to get there. They glamorize the end product in order to lure people in, and they're sponsored by people who want to sell stuff. It's just marketing and business, and an extension of the 'infotainment' industry. BTW, the Popeil Pocket Fisherman actually works.1 point

Aim for the spine, or head neck with a gobbler getter head.. the vitals on a turkey are very small aND from the side seem to be about the wing butt. Crossbows are fast and my go thru the bird, they do not bleed well and can fly quite a ways with no way to track them. A point that is designed to stop or slow down and stay in the bird is prefered.. imo spine from the back at top of back or head are only good shots. I've lost a few birds to center mast hits on birds In the fall.when I started bow hunting before I learned where to aim .Check out turkey vitals and shot placement on line.. best of luck1 point

The XR's out of your gun are doing a great job! Even out to 65 yards, still plenty of pellets in the kill zone. Nice shootin!1 point
