  1. Since The Mermaid and and I have been together, she has talked about a gun that belonged to her father that was supposedly buried SOMEWHERE in her sister's cluttered upstairs, but hadn't been seen in years. Well, Sister Gracie called yesterday and said she had found the gun(s)..It turned out that there two of them. I hurried over to identify the long lost treasures. She brought them down the stairs wrapped in old pillowcases. The first one was an old Stevens M94 16 gauge single shot marked Wards Western Field. It has seen lots of use, and the bluing and case hardening are mostly gone.It has a plastic stock and forend, and the buttplate is missing. It seems mechanically sound and functional, but hardly rates as a valuable heirloom. It looks like the gun that kept in the milkhouse for years and years to deal with varmints around the barn. The OTHER one, however, was a jewel... It is a Winchester M1892 saddle ring carbine in 32-20. Despite years of neglect, it is still in at least NRA "Good" condition. The stock is sound , with a few dents and digs but no cracks. The barrel bluing is pretty good, with some surface rust and minor pitting. The receiver has more bluing wear, mostly from handling and carrying, I suspect. The screw heads are not buggered..It doesn't appear to have been taken apart by an amateur gunsmith. As far as I can tell the bore and rifling are in good shape, albeit in need of a good cleaning. The action is tight and crisp. All parts appear original. It was made in 1912. I am looking forward to giving a good (gentle) cleaning. I don't intend to shoot it. Perhaps we can find a nice place to display it and someday one of The Mermaid's sons or Grandsons will inherit it.

  3. I went back in this past weekend, 4/14-17/16 to camp and scout. I was the first canoe camper into Lows Lake this year, probably because the gate was closed and I had to cart my outfit in 3/4 mile to the put in. I surprised a good size deer standing in some water/grass but other than that saw no tracks or sign from the canoe. I spent some time around Tomar Mt again, not much sign, some trails but no old rubs. Again, I'm not your best or hardest hunter, pretty much just enjoy the big woods and the Adirondacks. I'll be heading back in come fall for sure. The wood stove came in handy, temps down to the low 20's in the morning. Canoe and campsite, Virgin Timber Landing west end of Lows Lake, 15' wood canvas Chestnut Chum, my tent evening with Tomar Mt in the background, Daytime scouting, ice had just left the lake so I hugged the shoreline. Pack contains my lunch, a set of clothes and some birch bark, matches punk wood for a quick emergency fire. Good trip.

  6. I only got one UGLY reliable turkey gun and you inspired me to waste a shot this morning on some of my finest art work, lol Now I remember why I'm happy to only shoot this thing once or twice a year! God damn that hurts! 25 yds and all is well with me for this season.

  7. I got up to the Adirondacks last weekend for some more shed hunting. I found a nice 4 point right away. Maybe a mid 130s buck, but pretty good for that area. (#53, 4/15/16) Fleur saving me the trouble of having to pick it up myself... Fleur found this ancient 4 point buried in the leaves. It looked to be 8-10 years old, maybe even older. Hard to believe the porcupines didn't get it. (#54, 4/15/16) Fleur came through again deep in a spruce swamp... It happened so fast I wasn't able to get good pictures. (#55, 4/15/16) I managed to find one more for myself at the end of the day. (#56, 4/15/16) Group photo:

  8. After a few years of searching for a Savage 10ML-II and not wanting to pay the 1,000 price tag they have come to be the past few years. I found one Saturday at the gun show in Syracuse for a very reasonable price. Could not be happier! I took the breech plug out and found everything to be pres tine. Only problem I had was getting the vent-liner out of the breech plug. The prior owner must have forgot to ant-seize the threads. Calling savage to get a new breech plug on order. My next test will to be to locate some IMR 4759 or some N110.

  9. Well this came back and is actually bigger than I remember. This is the only buck I have ever seen while hunting. Not surprising I guess since this last season was my first. I love the hole towards the end of the right antler. Another neat thing was a scar on his cheek the taxidermist said went most of the way through his skin. It all adds character. I put it on a piece of old oak that I pulled out of my brothers house during a remodel. We are guessing the board is at least 100 years old but probably much older.

  11. Thanks Grampy I do get alot of enjoyment up there at Lows, and with no wind it was great to be back. I scouted around and found a good supply of beaverwood for this falls trip too. I haven't fished Lows in many years but back in the day the floating bog was the place to be for bass. My campsite was close to that portage over to the Oswegatchie. My son and I did pretty good with the brookies above the falls one year, but we paddled in from Inlet. Thanks

  13. And not a fan. Over the years I've noticed a few times that birds a few days prior and after a full moon tend to get tight lipped. Talking to my brother he agreed He and Doc Pellham ( a few may have known him ) hunted quite a bit together and on one particular day had birds who sat in the tree tops nary a gobble until almost 10 and then the entire tree tops erupted. So my opinion to anyone going out for the youth hunt , don't give up hope if no gobbles at " go time ". Sit tight , birds may just be wonky with the moon and not touch off til later morning.

  16. I have been a diehard Mathew's owner for over 20 years now. (2 bows) But, after going to the Sportsman's show in Hamburg last month, and stopping at the S&S booth, I think I may make a switch to the "ELITE" brand now. Sooo, a new bow will be in store for me before the start of our bow season this fall.

  18. I too have found that full moon nights can keep birds on the roost a bit longer, in the morning. Looks like a good morning, weather wise for the young hunters on Saturday. Should be no problem if you have to wait them out a while. Best of luck to all who are participating!

  26. I've been collecting used toilet paper rolls since I was 17. You never KNOW what may have value some day. I keep them in the attic right next to my belly button lint collection. I'm starting to run out of storage space, but I'd hate to sell them for less than they might be worth a few years from now.

  28. What are you missing....? Maybe the stories from 200 individual home invaders stopped dead in their tracks... OR.... Maybe they were all misses..Mrs.. or missed completely. If only those casings could talk, I'm sure they'd have a lot of stories to tell! You can't put a price tag on sentimental value!

  34. HNY was not the only the place this was posted. No idea on how many respondents were from here either and it isn't worth the guess. If there are 650k-750k hunters in NY lets just look at how many are members here. There could be no true crossection/geographic/demographic and have it random...I just see the best idea as the DEC requesting input form everyone and sorting the results as the best way to proceed

  35. Oh yea, we're neighbors! I use N120 (60 grains) with 300 grain Barnes Originals. I don't think that powder is still available, but thankfully I have a couple pounds left. I'll have to try something else when I run out.

  36. I was a bow tech guy, still have a couple, but I've been shooting Elites for a few years now and love them. I like the long axle to axle and the traditional look to them as opposed to all these over stressed speed bows that most companies are producing.

  37. A result of the fear that the free ride will come to an end if Trump gets elected. Ironic though, a free capitalist society will allow people like that to prosper from that kind of crap. Yet the morons will throw their support behind socialists like Hillary or Bernie.

  43. i agree but didn't bother to post it. probably the reason the results differ compared to what has been published by DEC. People can question the results but the results are what they are. i commend gjs4 for taking the time to make and share results of the survey. the more activities like this keep people plugged into DEC in relation to hunting the better.

  45. That's neat! Like Skillet's recent score, cool when you get what you want after some searching. Consider trying some of the Parker Ballistic Extreme 275 grain bullets, they've been tremendous out of mine and my buddies NULA smokeless guns, pushed by SR 4759. Either way, keep us posted on progress.

  48. I will be attempting Turkey with a bow this year as well. Thanks Tinlodge for the link. Ill use my hypodermic rage heads. I did buy the guillotines, but heard you have to shoot a heavy, longer, more stiff spined arrow and i dont want to change my whole setup. so if the birds within 20 yards, i will aim for head/neck, any further i will aim for the body. I d just hate to lose any breast meat, or clip the beard.. Thats been the reason i havent taken my bow out yet..

  49. I made the switch to the New Winchester Longbeards myself over the Nitro company stuff. Their price and the crimps left me cold. The buffer would always leak out in my vest pockets!!!! For the money Nitro company charged for their shells, $100.00 for a box of 25, their crimping and sealing methods sure were lacking quality control!!!
