  1. I think I may have finally caught up with the gobbler that I've been chasing for the past couple of weeks. My wife nearly killed him yesterday morning but he slipped through our fingers. Had him going this morning til 7:00 but neither I nor the real hens could lure him down the hillside. Eventually, he just shut up and I figured he had crossed the road above us. I left and drove around to check out another area and on the way back through where I had worked the bird earlier that morning, I spotted two longbeards fanned out in a corner of field circling each other and getting ready to fight!!! I hurried to get into position to intercept them further up the field. I got to the field not knowing exactly how far from them I was and was contemplating my next move when a full fan suddenly came into view at 35yds!!! I didn't even have time to sit...I raised the gun...he was facing away...I got him to raise life his head out of strut and delivered a load of Longbeard XR's to his face. Game over at 8:50. The other gobbler and 4-5 hens stood there and watched as I ran out to retrieve him. Not bad for the subordinate bird...almost 22lb, 10.5" beard and 1 1/4" hooks. One of the two was the "youth season" gobbler I had been after. The other one will have to wait until next year. This is the latest in season that I've ever punched a tag but it was worth the wait!!! It's been a rough season plagued by close calls and a miss early on. I've only really hunted two spots but was within striking distance of gobblers nearly every morning but just couldn't seal the deal. He lost a few tail feathers during the retrieval process. I also got a nice gash on my finger from grabbing his legs... This one's for you Reeltime...limbhanger!!!

  2. National treasure right there. Met my new friend in stop n shop this morning. I saw his hat and thanked him for his service. We talked for a while and he gave me a hug. He told me thank's for taking time out of your day to talk to an old man. God bless him!

  3. I managed to get a few (blurry) photos of the gobblers in my back yard yesterday afternoon. I heard them gobbling while I was doing yard work. I still have a tag left , but it would be illegal to discharge a firearm or bow with houses all around me. They sure are making it difficult for me to do the right thing.

  9. I don't understand the point of your topic. You are saying respect others opinions, yet you are giving nothing but reasons not to use a xbow. I'll respect your opinion on using a more traditional bow, go use it. I'll respect those who use xbow, go use it. I honestly don't think the difference between a xbow and compound are too extreme. Especially the compounds that are out there nowadays over 350 fps. Only difference is it can be a point and shoot weapon. Probably a little more accurate for most people. The effective range is definitely more comparable with a compound bow than a rifle, so not sure why you would say it should be called a cross gun. It fires an arrow from a string. I love to bowhunt and will continue to use a compound in most cases, however I would like to try a xbow and see how I like it. It's all personal preference. And once again, I respect your opinion.

  10. Elmo, I'm not surprised you found the chucks there. The real shocker is you found the last little patch of GRASS in NYC! They'll move on as soon as they mow that down!

  11. Like it or not full inclusion for crossbow is coming. I've hunted and killed deer with bow and crossbow. No big deal to me. If you don't like crossbows, don't use em. Very simple and no arguments from me.

  12. How are those gardens coming along...this hot sunny weather is a killer...love it though...I have been able to plant 54 tomato plants, 24 swt. peppers 7 hot. The new strawberry plants look awesome. None of the seed is up but did plant zucchini /cuke plants added some more spinach plants to what is already up basil, cilantro, sage plants...Planted 2 Goji berry bushes in a food plot and a apple sucker. I have the hills done to pop in more summer and winter squash ...just too hot to plant the brassica plants...I may plant some now (Brussel sprouts) and a few broccoli then pot up the others for a later planting...heat ...heat will cause them to bolt and not produce good firm heads. Melons need to find a spot ....

  13. Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 mag What a PITA to get person to person sales transfer however. There's only but a couple of places in WNY that'll even do it. Getting the ball rolling after the holiday weekend. Current owner has had since late '70's and used twice deer hunting and some competition shooting. Had some trigger work done, boy is it sweet . Put on Pachmayr grips too. Gun is in pristine condition. Any deer hunting ammo suggestions ? I did a little research and saw Buffalo Bore Deer Grenade +P got great reviews. Have all summer to practice with her. Now I have to find a holster for it. Optics ? yay or nay ?

  15. Found this guy at my in-laws yesterday, don't think he was enjoying the 90° heat. I spotted him sleeping as we were going for a walk, after a while he woke up and noticed us and when we walked back through he had disappeared farther up the tree. I grabbed my camera and came back and managed to find him again, he clearly had no interest in moving anymore and looked like he had melted over top of the branch.

  23. I went back to a spot in Marilla, busted a bird off the roost, Heard 1 fly down about 5:30, moved to where i thought i heard the bird fly down about an hour later and busted another off the roost! I think in hind sight it was probably the same bird, I think I heard it fly up!. Got 1 gobble at 7:30 re positioned myself and gave a little call.. boom he gobbled right back..never heard him again, I may have bumped him when I relocated to get in a better position? Thermacell ran out of fuel, can't stand the bugs, I quit for today.

  25. My friends Dad was in the Army in WWII in Europe and Italy. The man is in his 90's now and you would think he's 70. He's thin, drives his car all over, walks, volunteers at the senior center, lives alone, cooks for himself and others (he's 2nd gen Italian), very articulate with a sharp mind, has about 12 grand kids and close to 20 great grand kids living in central PA and visits them a couple times a year. One thing I notice though is he has trouble accepting the reality of our times. He was a union man when he worked and still thinks the Democrats are great, but nobody is perfect. LOL!

  26. The thoughts of some gun hunters converting n changing things some times is real. In my state you can't even hunt some places cause of the crossbow drives. Yes it's their right but others equally. If Id never allow my hunting to affect you Id love to see that both ways. The cocking the crossbow thing is not correct that you can do w bad shoulder they sell cranks to pull string for you. Crossbows do have pros n cons. I don't think they'll affect things much because of the cons as long as they don't allow bait like other states do cause that negates much of em. What guys may not be thinking is a gun hunter mindset is different than a bowhunter, getting 20 yards from a deer isn't instantly easy so they'd have to learn just like others.

  27. Nary a sound ... again. No deer to watch. Going to take my first ever nap in the woods. I set claymores next to dekes in case they sneak in silent.

  28. I've seen strutter like that one time here localy many years ago before I started carrying a camera. A few weeks later I saw it in the same yard so I just passed it off as a domestic bird. Reminds me of these two from Hidden Valley.

  29. But isn't that why you don't like xbows? Bc they are easier...like when you said should be called cross? I'm not fighting I'm disagreeing bc I genuinely believe xbows are not enough of a game changer for anyone to think the shouldn't be in with compounds. Same thing just sideways and release is built in.Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk

  31. The guy (Ken Wallace) who keeps finding these rattlers in the park is a friend of mine. He's also an incredible flintnapper, shed hunter, and very knowledgeable guy about many things in nature. No surprise to me at least that this is his second rattler find in as many years here! He has a you tube channel that documents a lot of his time spent in the park and many of his encounters, along with some great knapping, and I believe some caching videos. I would love to have an opportunity to shoot one of those suckers with the camera just once!

  33. I'm not gonna beat you up over it but a xbow is just a much archery equipment and the modern compounds...so unless you hunt and shoot strictly trad you are no closer to the true origins of archery than I will be with my xbow Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk

  34. No such thing as a golden rattlesnake...Some reporter who don't know **** is referring to a yellow phase timber rattler as a " golden " as if it is a distinct species.. Three venomous snakes in NY....The copperhead, the missauga rattler and the timber rattler in it's several color phases..

  38. Awesome! Obviously not the healthiest thing in the world but everything surprisingly complemented each other. The donut by itself would have been way too sweet but the spice from the kimchi, saltiness from the bacon, and the savory brisket bought it down and balanced it out. If you would have added too much of any one of those items, it would have thrown it off but it was just the right amount of everything to keep it perfectly balanced. http://www.kimchismoke.com/#!menu/c24tf
