Today's Buffalo News sports section, "Outdoors" page. "Catch Of The Week" picture of the young lady and her trophy sized yellow pike. A VERY close relation to our own "turkeyfeathers", she has already eclipsed his largest 'eye! Congrats Jay & Samantha!!7 points

I've been suffering from jealousy since I learned Mrs. Curmudgeon has been encountering bobcat kittens on her morning walks. I have not seen a bobcat in the flesh in over 30 years. This morning, because I was not working, I was here when she returned. She told me she had treed a bunch, unintentionally. I quickly went out and found they were still in the tree, ending a long drought of not seeing wild cats in person. Here are some shots of the 3 young from my point and shoot camera.6 points

Dad of soon to be 92 and Mom soon to be 90 have their garden in our village garden walk again this year. He spends 6-7 hours in it everyday. It's simply gorgeous.6 points

quite honestly, I don't care what brand of manufacture the imitation broadhead is, if they're factory seconds, or put together cheaper or material of a lesser quality, I'm not going to risk it.....you could very well get 11 good ones in a pack, but the 12th one might be a dud, and that may be the one that costs you a deer, not worth saving $20.00 in my opinion...........but chances are you'll never have a problem with them if you go that route, just not something I would do.3 points

Done what, Lawdwaz? Cut my lawn for exercise. SAY WHAT? It really didn't need it as it was just a bunch of weds that were getting ugly. It hasn't been cut in darn near a month. I was feeling kind of sluggish today so figure a good 60 minutes of humping the mower around might be good for me. It was a dumb idea...................3 points

Last week on the local news they had a story about all the rabid critters this year, reminding folks to be on the lookout for odd acting critters. Then on Friday morning on the way to work I spotted a smaller 'coon walking towards a house. The house it adjacent to a rural golf course and sits alone, all open mowed lawn for a considerable area. I'd bet a half a 10 pack of Tim Bits that masked bandit was rabid.............3 points

The funny thing about recoil is everyone's perception is different. I have a buddy that hunts with a 300wby mag that won't shoot my 6lb 35 whelen carbine because he says it kicks too much. I don't find it to kick bad but it is "jumpy." The rifle makes as much difference as the cartridge. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk3 points

Just got back in. Was a very good weekend indeed. Kids, dog and myself all got some RnR! Here are a drew picts of the dog in my oat field. The shot behind the cabin is the soy beans. The cam shots were few and far between. Had a malfunction with one of the cams so only have a couple of bucks to show. Local farmer has been talking about a big dog he is seeing. Calling it a Timber wolf………..2 points

Last night's party was great. Started with a dinner beer, Stella followed by 3 Coronas, then tried the Sam's. Switched back to Corona and had 3 more while playing cornhole. 5 jello shots and a bourbon shot as a night cap.2 points

When I started deer hunting with a recurve about 45 years ago, it was only 35 lb pull and took deer out to 20 yards with no problems. I doubt I got more than 150 FPS out of those old cedar shaft arrows. And the broadheads I had then were fixed to the shaft and required sharpening. The company says draw weight on this thing is about 28 lbs. I'm sure this would kill deer at 20 yards using carbon arrows and good broadheads. I doubt it's legal to hunt with though.2 points

Well after a crappy cold.may it's been warm and dry, birds that lost 1st nest seem to have done very well with second nesting. Hot and dry leaves little scent for predators to follow. Perhaps the hatch will lift bird numbers for the fall. 1 good nesting season can do amazing things for numbers.2 points

Regarding felt recoil, everyone should use every trick in the book to mitigate recoil when target shooting, especially from a bench. Even a rolled up towel between your shoulder and the butt of the rifle will reduce felt recoil tremendously. There is no need to suffer from recoil when sighting in a rifle. When taking a shot at a game animal, you will most likely never feel the recoil at all if you are in the excited "zone" when you shoot. I personally never feel any recoil when shooting game and often don't remember hearing a loud report when I fired the shot either. Of course the position you shoot from, and the technique used when shooting also matters a great deal. For example, shooting a high recoil rifle from the prone position is a bad idea. The stock design has a lot to do with how much felt recoil you experience. I prefer the stock design of Melvin Forbes, used on his Ultra Lite Arms and NULA rifles. I believe he also designed the Kevlar/composite stocks used by Kimber. All of the above should be considered if you need a magnum round for the hunting you will be doing. But for whitetail hunting at reasonable ranges, the same considerations will make your 7mm-08 fell like a .243 or less.2 points

country style pork. Looked like a few boneless chops and pieces. Did a dry rub, set it fridge for 8 hours, cooked on the grill low and slow, then turned up the heat and basted with Dino sauce to blacken. fresh corn on the cob.. Yum!2 points

500 yards is a poke with anything but a specialized long range rig.. I find 400 a much more realistic "maximum range" at least with the standard chamberings. The problem is, you can't always convince the elk to pose broadside for perfect shot placement, regardless of the range. You need a bullet that will penetrate far enough to reach the vitals even with a less than perfect shot angle. I'd say that within 400 yards, a 30-06 with a monolithic 165 or 180 grain bullet would be a reasonable choice. I would a whole lot rather be able to get closer though, say within 300 yards.2 points

I have to agree with Buckmaster7600, seems like everyone has a different take and evaluation of felt recoil. The only time I really notice recoil is when shooting from the bench sighting in and testing my handloads performance. If I am firing a lot of rounds out of something that belted me I would use a half full 25 lb bag of lead shot up against my shoulder which reduced recoil to very tolerable levels. I have owned a 338 Win mag in a Sako Finnbear and a 458 Win mag in a Ruger 77 both kicked pretty good but using the lead bag pad I had no problem with load development and sighting them in. When using the 338 on game, one Elk, one Caribou, one Deer and a bunch of Woodchucks just to get familiar and comfortable with the rifle in the field I never noticed the recoil very much. The 458 was one of those deals where I just had to have one to try out and play with, I never killed anything with it but I had a lot of fun. Back when I worked in my buddy's sporting good's store we had a scope mounting service and sighted the gun in for customers. I always dreaded those 6 1/2 pound 12 ga Ithaca model 37 Deerslayers with slugs, they would make you cockeyed firing them from the bench. Al2 points

I agree that Ruger 77s are kickers.. I had one in .338 Win Mag that brutalized me shooting off the bench. I had it ported, and that reduced the felt recoil somewhat, but it STILL kicked pretty bad, and it was loud as hell after that. I finally sold it and bought a CZ in 9.3 x 62. That is kinda like a .35 Whelen on steroids. I shoot 250 and 286 grain bullets and the recoil is much more comfortable than my .338, OR any .300 mag that I have shot. It doesn't have the range of the .338, but it still shoots flat enough for the odd 300 yard shot and it delivers enough energy to cleanly kill any North American game, including the big bears.2 points

No FB for me either, I have enough friends and don't need to rekindle old friendships. I was a "member" for a short time while working on a high school reunion committee. The ease in finding (or being found) by old flames led me to believe there was nothing good going to come out of FB for me, only trouble.2 points

My daughter and neighbors walked me home, had all that in 4 hours. Had a great buzz going until my head hit the pillow at 11pm. Slow deep breathing and I crashed. Had to work this morning so no time for a real breakfast. 2 Tylenol, a banana, and a iced dunkin coffee. Felt pretty good.1 point

The only reason I am trying to learn all this is due to archery becoming my favorite season and the fact that I finally bought a brand new real good bow so to maximize my experience I want it to be right. Kinda like guys who develop hand loads...are they needed no probably not but to get the full experience and range they are difference makersSent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk1 point

3 mornings in a row , I had to put back together and repair a bird feeder . Thought maybe a squirrel was trying to bust it up . Last night I put out a trail cam . I could only put it on a post about 3 feet away . Looked out this am ant the feeder was empty and the suet feeder was gone . Found the suet feeder on the ground 10 feet away . It was still closed but the suet cake was gone . Got pics of the masked intruder .1 point
