  2. I shot a doe tonight. I was right,my stand is an evening stand. She came out at 6.21. I think it is one of the ones that eats my wifes flowers. 12 yd shot, she went maybe 80 yds. Only my 2nd deer with a bow, guess who is excited.

  3. I am excited to report my harvest of a doe. So excited that I didn't take a picture until I was skinning her. You will have to excuse that,it was getting dark when I found her and then I had to rush to pick up my wife.

  4. Hit this guy at 6:00 PM Tuesday evening at 20 Yds after grunting him out of a bedding area. I thought I may have hit him a bit too far back, so I went home and returned the following morning to track. He went about 80 yards. This is my very first archery deer ! Town of Delevan, Catt county. Have a pic of him on the trail cam also.

  5. Thanks guys, glad to have you all here and hope I can keep your attention! Back at it this evening. I decided I wanted to get a better look at what was happening in the field so I abandoned my stand for the night. I cleared myself out a crop circle in the goldenrod on the edge of the field and got settled in. Saw 3 deer way across that I couldn't identify. Right around 6:30 yesterdays buck showed up again. This time he emerged from the same goldenrod along the wooded property I'm set up in about 40yds out to my right. This guy really threw me for a loop as he can't be any more than 12" wide, lol. But a 10pt is a 10pt in my book and I kinda really dig that rack! He may be in trouble if we meet deeper on my turf! I got a TC pic of him from summer I'll attach here as well. Anyhow..., now I know who he is and his comings and goings. That info may come in handy this year or it may not. It was a fun night hiding on the ground in the weeds and even better to accomplish what I intended for the night! So far I'm having a pretty good time NOT shooting any deer! I hope I don't get anything this year, lol

  6. Have you gone for a long sit while bow hunting in your tree stand and forgotten to take your snack ? This is how I feel .

  7. Finally going to make it up to the house with my son for this year's youth hunt. Hoping my son takes one tomorrow morning and then I can go by myself and bow hunt in the afternoon. Whether we take any or not, I'm looking forward to spending time with my boy. Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Tab S2

  8. I shot up to the same stand this morning to see if I could catch anything going to bed from the field. Nothing shakin' up there so I decided to head out around 11:30AM. About half way home I spotted a deer crossing the trail in front of me 80-100yds out. I couldn't tell what it was so I went into sneaky mode and crept closer when it disappeared behind a knoll. I was on a deer trail that's worn down pretty good so it was nice and quiet. When I got to where I could see around it, I spotted a nice doe browsing around and surveying her surroundings. Then she flopped down and bedded facing down hill. I was above her so I decided to slip in as close as I could to grab a few shots. I made it to about 30yds and she was still facing away from me totally unaware I was even there. I didn't get my ML tag yet so I wouldn't be tempted to use my either sex tag on a doe and piss away my buck chance. Maybe next year if deer #'s seem to be rising here, but not this year for me unless something aweful screws up my season that leaves me with a roll of unused tags near the end. After a while I got tired of taking pictures of the back of her head so I started talking to myself out loud to get her to look my way. She finally did, but she still never budged. I waved my arms at her and still nothing. Finally when I stood up, she did too and it was off to the races, lol How come the big boys never screw up like that...?

  10. Before closing this thread, on behalf of Zac and myself, we are sending you a heartfelt, eternally grateful THANK YOU!!! For those following this, I can tell you that moog is one heck of a stand up guy! He made me an offer I could not refuse, that will benefit Zac and I, much more than himself. It is not very often a man will do something like this for someone he has never met! I write this with tears of joy coming down my cheeks! This is a wish come true for one man, granted by the kindness and generosity of another. This rifle will be shooting deer long after my hunting days are done. Thank you so much my friend.

  11. Well folks, no raffle or big buck contest. I am happy to say that the gun is sold to Grampy and he and Zac will be knocking down deer for years to come with it. Not sure how to close a thread, but mods feel free. Thanks.

  12. I'm having a hard time having fun when I hunt anymore, so I thought maybe firing up a journal might help. At the very least, I'll be posting plenty o' pics of what I see even if I don't kill anything, and I have fun doing that, lol. The first few days of archery were pretty slow. Saw plenty of deer.., had a few doe, forkies, and 6'ers in range, but everything else kept it's distance. The pics from day #1-4 got lost while swapping out cards on the TC when I accidently formatted the wrong one. Today I got my final stand in place in time for the evening sit. I hung this one based on yesterdays sighting of 7 bucks still hanging together at the green fields(clover). I got hung and ready for action by 4pm. About an hour later the first and only buck of the night stepped into the field about 60yds out. I can't get permission to hunt this property(the field), but I do have permission for the timbered property that butts up to it. The timber turns red hot once bucks start cruising during daylight, but I'll have to suffer through a few more uneventful sits until then. Naturally my stand was hung with that in mind but it doesn't offer the best opportunity to see everything that's going on out there right now. This guy snuck in and started munching with 2 doe. I only managed to find him a few times through all the leaves still on the trees. Since I could see him I threw everything but the kitchen sink at him for calls. Grunted, rattled, bleated...... he didn't want anything to do with any of that and just kept on feeding along. He'd snap his head up and look my way when I called so I know he heard me, but he just wasn't in the mood to investigate. I climbed down early since the woods got so dark so quick. First time descending this tree so I wanted to be able to see where I was stepping on my way down and also avoid bumping any deer that were on their way to the field yet. When I reached the ground I could still see him and the doe out there so I know I didn't spook them on my way out. The 10pt is from the evening and the other from an hour AM sit at the corn field. Had 4 turkey pass by as well today. Squills were dropping nuts all around me. It sounded like it was raining at times! Man those little reds are full of energy and never slow down!

  15. Oct 3 - I had a call last night from a hunter that shot a 7 pointer. He said the deer moved just as he released and the arrow hit way back. The good news is the buck was quartering away. He stated the arrow was sticking out about 8 inches as it ran off, and the hunter and his friend followed good blood for a couple hundred yards, then marked where it became sparse and called me. We started at the hit site and Luna quickly covered the trail to the point of loss. We went about 400 yards with no sign and did a restart. We ended up at a dry creek bed and were walking it when Luna shut down due to the warm temps. It was at this point I realized I left the water in the truck, and Luna and I headed to a nearby waterhole. One of the guys headed to the truck to get the water and unknown to me, another guy had gone ahead. He called and said he found where the buck crossed the creek. Luna refused to drink any water, which is normal while she tracks and we headed to the crossing. Luna immediately went back to work. We followed the track for about 100 yards or so and found the buck.

  18. Hold up did you say Bush was worse than Obama? You must be sipping that Kool-aid. Bush actually gave a damn about the country compared to the poor excuse for a president we have now a group of terrorist attack the USA on american soil guess what he did he went after them. US attacked on american soil during Obama's administration what does he do, that's right blames gun owners! Let me know at what point Bush divided the country by race and quadrupled the deficit. Mr. Obama had 8 years to straighten out the so called problems Bush created and has done absolutely nothing to make this country better if not he made it worse. What exactly did good ole Slick Willy do for this country, yeah I can't recall much either?

  20. I would like to think that anyone with a CCP permit that is an avid hunter (I would like to think but I am sure it isn't true, unfortunately) wouldn't go taking pop shots in the dark period. I certainly wouldn't...Not only would that be extremely stupid but it would ruin my morning hunt....Even if I had Coyote yipping at me 10 yds away in the dark and I was carrying, you bet that pistol would be in my hand but I wouldn't be taking pop shots into bushes. If it became more than that...I would think a shot fired into the ground or air, whatever you felt was safest would move those dogs out very quickly. I don't see why I can't carry my 380 Body Guard. I am sure that I would be much less effective with that weapon against a deer than I would be with my bow. Or even my .22 pistol. Stupid people making stupid laws.......

  23. Yes, not cheap but really comfortable and grips the tree like a SOB. Another huge deal is you don't need no stinkin' stirrups like the Summit. I've spent as much as 11 hours in it during an opening day and only came down once for call of nature break. I bought a couple Summit saddle bags for it and used an old Summit front bag for the front bar. I carry a back pack for all day sits and lower it to the ground with a haul rope if I need extra clothing. I also have a cup holder for my hot cocoa or soup when on this long sits. When bow hunting, the cup holder isn't on board. A Real Tree Bow/Gun holder, folding saw and safety line reside in the front bag all the time.

  26. This is a friend of mine since kindergarten, after law school he moved to Seattle. While there he really got into traditional archery , to the point of having bows made for him , by Glen St. Charles ( he also owns some of his tools and 1/2 his work bench ) and Bill Stewart. Anyways Washington state gives out 5 sheep tags per year, after 25 or so years of building preference points he got a tag this year! However work and home life limited his hunting time to a couple week ends, so he went out with his .270 instead of a stick bow . One week end was all it took , he stalked to within 50 yards , but they moved before he had the right shot angle , so he had to sneak up,on them as they went over the next draw . He severed an artery to the heart and got both lungs as well .

  28. I have shot both iron sights and scope. I started hunting with an open sight savage bolt action 30/30 and it was fine. As I began hunting other types of game in other areas in North America I became more accustomed to scopes. My main reason for scopes is that I can see my target and what's in my path to the target more clear than my eyes. Branches, brush , etc that I would not see with open sights. 32. Stupid is as stupid does. Obama was the most unqualified candidate in all of presidential history and has proven to be the worst president in history as well. Hillary is the first candidate to run while being investigated by the FBI for criminal activity. Trump has more qualifications then Hillary simply because he wants to fix America, which is what people want. Hillary wants to eliminate it, along with all nations and borders, and create one world government with her at the head seat of power. If Trump is Hitler, Hillary is Satan! Don't think there are millions of stupid people in America? Wait until you see how many vote for her.

  35. Finn Aagaard did a whole series of tests with open sights both barrel and receiver (peep), scopes low and high power and those optic sights with fiber optics (cant think of the term, you know the short tube firedot illuminated sights) for speed and accuracy. If I remember right, there wasn't but a few tenths difference between the peep and the low power scope sights in perfect conditions for speed and the rest fell behind in the accuracy department. The low power scopes won out for speed and clarity. His conclusion, open sights offered no advantage in speed over the scope and the fact that the low power scopes put everything on a single sighting plane was a huge advantage over having to line things up. That from a guy who professionally hunted Africa for buffalo, cats and elephant for over 30 years, a low power 4x (early on a 3x) on his .375. (he did prefer an open peep on his .458 for really big, mean close follow up stuff, like 15' close!!) For us, or at least me, I'm ordering a leupold 3x20 long tube custom shop (swfa) for my 7x57 as we speak. It's all the gun will ever need. JMO. Jaeger

  36. Every single one of you should be a little "afraid" when entering the woods. It is what keeps your senses on high alert and it is your best defense against EVERYTHING...Even that crack before the limb hits you. or the sound of that slug whistling through the limbs, and the sound of brush or hoofs hitting the ground charging you.... I dare say there isn't one of you that aren't locking your car doors driving through certain neighbor hoods, looking all around going to your car in the mall, looking over your shoulder opening your hotel room door...the list goes on and on... Know your surroundings and be a little afraid.

  42. I have to agree this is normal, young bucks just can't help themselves. Plus you can have doe come into heat now, like stated this is the first cycle, (Or the start of it.) another month or so and the 2nd then same in Dec with November as the prime rut. All it takes is one doe in heat to get that testosterone going not much else to do but eat fight and chase tail. Why not start early they have nothing better to do!

  43. Great thing about studying nature and this wonderful mystery of the whitetail is that we learn new things that are outside what we consider "normal." And as we get older...ahem...like yours truly, our views tend to calcify and it is tougher to accept new things even though it is reality. I hope I can always learn...it is just that I also am suspicious of our technology. Nature resists being put in a box...there seems to always be exceptions.

  44. I will say this knowing that I probably have a better chance of getting struck by lighting on the way to my stand in the morning than I do getting attacked by a coyote. But to me it is stupid that I carry a side arm everyday but I can't when I go hunting????? Stupid rule....

  48. We have one guy who would shoot every buck mentioned. If you shoot all your younger bucks you will not have older deer. Not that I would not take a good 3 year old with a nice rack but we would rather have 4 or better as our goal. Lucky for me it is possible in this area if we can get everyone aboard! Last year 2 good bucks where taken from another area, hope this one does not have two young guns taken in addition. Restraint is the biggest issue, hard to pass a 20 yard broadside shot on something like this, especially if they pose for you! PS: Not all area's will have this age group especially in NY. I am lucky to have access to such an area! And I am lucky the hunters are trying to let the young guns come of age for the most part.
