So who would retire from deer hunting if this happened to you?

A guy in his 50's shoots an 8pt buck in New Hampshire. He tracks it and finds it. Instead of using his rifle muzzle to poke and see if the deer is dead, this not so brilliant part of the gene pool kneels down and pets it between the antlers. Guess what happens next?

Thats is also a terrible idea, poking a potentially live animal with a loaded weapon is not the way to do it. Use a stick, throw a rock, anything but poke it with a gun barrel.

I never said to poke it with a "loaded" firearm. I usually throw a stone and if doesn't move then tap it with my "unloaded" rifle.

The guy is a dumb ass . Get him out of the woods .

The article said he "patted" it on the head to give thanks , not "pet" the deer .

My father in law got me started with deer hunting . He told me , "if you knock one down , put a slug in his neck so he doesn't get back up" . He introduced me to one of his friends that shot a buck and then straddled it to cut it's throat ( old timers did this ) . The buck wasn't dead and thrashed the crap out of the guy with it hooves . Jim had several scars all over his body and said he had somewhere between 60 and 80 stitches . He said he couldn't remember but showed us a few . Jim said he was lucky that the deer did the damage with the hooves instead of coming at him with its antlers . He did finish off the deer with a follow up shot . This was around 1966 - 1967 that I met the guy . .

this happened not to far from me

I don't personally know him & Glad I don't

I still can't get over the fact that he knew it was not dead & aparently did not want to waste a bullet so he thinks he will knife him instead I think it was cheaper to just "waste a $.040 bullut but that is just me

"Gray said he walked up to the deer, patted it between its antlers and thanked it for giving its life. He didn't expect what happened next.

"The deer bounds up and rolls down the hill," he said, getting tangled in the underbrush. As he approached, the deer lunged.

"He drove the horn into me, picked me up and pounded me into the ground," Gray said. "He was just thrashing and I'm holding onto his horns - I thought he killed me.""

If I read this right the guy was surprised the first time it got up...then went up to it a second time? The freaking guy should have been taken out of the gene pool
