greg54
If these adds even help one person to quit, or scares them from even starting, then they did what they were intended for. And I asked my doctors at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo if these adds are effective, and they confirmed thru surveys with patients and the general public that they played a big part in people quitting. These people have class, and they do feel if they can help stop cancer, it is worth it even if people get offended. Some people need alot of different ways and means to quit, and this is one of them. Everyone is different. "I've been there and done that" as they say. And when I quit, it was because of the 5 stents that when into my cardiac artaries and the pictures of the damage that had been done by smoking. So yeah, these ads are effective in getting people to quit. It might be that extra push they need. This life saved could be someone you know. Thats the truth, for sure
Doc
Whatever. I have the name of a very good cardio-thoracic surgeon if you need one. We have some good ones as well. And at my age, I may very well need one some day. However, I have quit smoking enough years ago so that it will be getting harder and harder to blame it on smoking as time goes on. At any rate, these TV ads aren't too likely to help that situation a whole lot other than to spoil my suppers with gross images. But you know, that isn't really what I pay those exhorbitant Cable TV rates for. Maybe you enjoy seeing that garbage on your TV, but I don't. greg54
I do see your point Doc, maybe they should put them out there at later time or something. I really just believe every bit helps, and they did help me and I'm just glad I'm still here and can get out hunting this fall.I really missed it last year cause of the diagnosis but thats over and I'll just move on with things. Peace.
Elmo
I don't think these ads main goal is to get people to quit but rather their main goal is to prevent young kids from starting in the first place.
Paula
Absolutely everything helps! Those commercials are nasty and i hated to see them, made me feel uncomfortable probably because they make you see what is happening or what could happen to you. They should have started those ads yrs ago because i am sure they help more people than we will ever know. They use to be kinda mellow and are getting a tad graphic, sure they will get worse, maybe an "R" rating. GreenHunter good luck to you and good luck to others that are quitting. Doewhacker
Hey Doc ever thought of changing the damn channel when an add comes on you don't like? Then you could bitch about battery life in your remote I guess.
sweet old bill
I always told the wife I would have to be locked up to quit. I would stop for a week or month and go back. I fell off of just 10 ft, and broke my leg in 9 places, so I was good as under lock and key. It took me a good 5 month till the smell of smoke would smell bad. Now I am clean for over 20 years. I do know even now if I smoked just one I would want them all over again. Now at 71 years young and sure glad I did quit.

Peace. My Brother-in-law from Canada sent me down a video that was very much like those ads only worse. And no, that didn't work on me either at the time, but at least it was pointed at the particular individual that it was intended for and not just randomly blasted across the airwaves and forced on everybody. Yes, if anyone is convinced that his sort of gross-out is ever effective, my Brother-in-law's technique of targeted exposure certainly was in far better taste. Doc
I don't think these ads main goal is to get people to quit but rather their main goal is to prevent young kids from starting in the first place. Again, I have no quarrel with targeted exposure to those who need it. It might make a good school project to distribute such stuff to known smokers. I could see pre-recorded messages that kids could email to friends that might be thinking of starting smoking. But again, I have to ask, is there a human being on this planet that is still in the dark about the health effects of smoking?
verminater71
I have been smoking an electronic cig for a year, hopefully i'll be done with it soon evan when I smoked a pack a day, I never smoked around my kids, never in my home or car my kids still think it's illegale to smoke inside.... but who the HELL cares if someone smokes, you can't do it in public anyway so if someone smokes so be it a lot of you drink, what about your liver, I promise you WILL die some day smoker or not
ants
Im all for educating the public on the dangers of smoking. It's a good idea. But some of these ads are getting way too graphic. I was at a local Arby's last week, eating lunch, when one of those ads came on the T.V. It was the one with the guy standing over the sink hacking up a lung (literally) Myself and everyone else in the restaurant, were disgusted. Totally inappropriate to have to watch that disgusting crap while eating in a public restaurant. One old crotchety old fart even yelled at the girl behind the counter (like it was her fault) Don't tell me that they can't tone these ads down and still deliver a strong message. WNYBuckHunter
HAHAHA, kinda ironic that you think a guy coughing up a lung is gross while stuffing fast food down your gullet.

In my defense, I almost never eat the stuff but I was pressed for time and it was the closest place. One small R.B. sandwich and a diet lemon aide. Thanks for caring and excellent point !

Mr VJP
If a person smokes and gets sick from it, to be brutally honest, I have no sympathy for anyone who's misery is self inflicted. If you still smoke, knowing all we know today, you are a fool. P.S. those TV ads won't work on a fool either.

landtracdeerhunter
I see quite a few people using the e cigarette. My SIL used it for a while but just didn't satisfy. She went back to cigs. Her husband died of COPD. years back.
nyantler
So we all know smoking isn't good for you... but neither are preservatives in your food, daily inhalation of automobile exhaust, even breathing in the bug spray you put on before turkey hunting... everything can be linked to something negative... the attack on smokers and tobacco companies is nothing more than another activist agenda of trying to control everything that happens in the world.. yeah I know it costs us billions of dollars in medical bills and increases insurance rates... so did electing the last President. What's new?? If you need me I'll be on the porch smoking a good cigar... and enjoying every bit of the stress free moment. I have to agree that government has probably way over-stepped its boundaries with the smoking issue. In fact I am not totally convinced that cigarette smoking costs us anything. To say that assumes that if we eliminated tobacco products, no one would ever die or be hospitalized or get sick from something else ..... and we all know that's not true. But what I like least is the proven concept that government with all of our limitless resources can effectively get engaged in mass behavior modification through taxation. Look for this remedy to be exploited on all kinds of other things in the future. They decide they don't like obesity, expect sugar taxes. They don't like anything else that they deem is harmful behavior, expect new taxes. Oh and by the way behavior modification through taxation can be applied to hunting and gun ownership if they should take such a notion. Here's the deal .... if you can prove that something should have government backed elimination, at least have the stones to declare it a controlled substance and make it illegal rather thanusing the back-door and turning it into a tax issue. That solution (taxation) to control citizen behavior is getting to be an all too popular remedy.

Carbonelement
my girl sent me that pic the other day. I hate when people make comments like you should quit ur guna die. I KNOW ITS BAD FOR ME, had some fat old lady make a comment the other day i told her i choose to smoke u choose to eat mcdonalds, I dont walk up to fat slobs and tell them to eat salad why do these people find it necessary to tell me to quit smoking. If everyone quit smoking in this country the taxes would go through the roof! PA last year got almost $900 million dollars in taxes from cigs last year. I say everyone should smoke!!! It really has become a national pastime to get into everyone else's business, and critique their lifestyle. Must be we all feel like we are the only ones who know the right way to live, and we all intend to live forever. It's probably not a news flash, but we are all going to get sick and die of something eventually. As far as I know, nobody has perfected immortality. Also, I haven't heard of anyone who has figured out how and when to die in the most convenient way. In fact, for the rest of us, the smokers are the most thoughtful types. They usually die early and don't force the rest of us to provide them with all the geriatric needs and care for decades into their old doddering years. It's interesting to visit nursing homes and look at how we are warehousing all these people for years way beyond what we would have if they had continued to smoke. Maybe I should be apologizing now for having quit smoking a handful of years ago......lol.
sits in trees
Seems that Big Tabacco and the politicians it has gotten elected have done a pretty good job of convincing America that cigarettes really aren't bad for you, WOW this country is doomed.
Doc
Actually, it appears that "Big" tobacco must not have paid off enough politicians seeing how the government has done their best to put them out of business. So now government is trying their hardest to wrap themselves around everyone's personal lives. They're doing a damned good job of it too.
