LIVE from the woods 2016 Edition! - 7th Year, lets make this happen...

What a difference a few days makes. Bucks were running does hard last Wed - Sat. Seemed to be deer everywhere. Walking and chasing across open fields along the highway too. Now, it seems like the woods are void of life and the nearest deer is miles away. Moon?? Did see decent movement last night before dark.

And the saga continues, he found him after I told him to stay put and he tells me where he is and he is not even close to where he was supposed to be and I'm not even sure he is on the property I have permission to be on. The spot I told him to go is in the dead center of a 800 acre parcel with a gravel road that leads him exactly to the spot.

This is what I get for trying to be nice, he has a disabled son so he doesn't get to hunt much so I tried to be nice and help him out.

Hunting new farm this year... Early scouting showed a healthy herd. First couple days of bow were amazing. Piles of deer in the field every night. Since then I have seen 2 2.5 bucks and maybe a doe or 2. Appears as if this is not a rut/ late season area. Could be a bunch of other variables but with all the bedding around I can't believe the lack of action ! Ah well. Can't get em on the couch. Pulling stands today and getting ready for gun fun

Was just enjoying a cup of hot coffee and had a button come by at 20 yards. Where's mama bud!!
Beautiful morning. I like 40ish cold enough but not ball freezing. Really just enjoying one of my last bow hunts before the war starts Sat! Too bad I gotta work in a bit.

I can't brag because I lowered what I normally look for..that said 5pt down gutted and waiting for me to return with the Gator...5yrds double lung and he went 100 yrds, after a mule kick ,short run then walked away tail down and wagging like mad.......small 5 but the size of a nice doe..which I was hoping were the ones that ran and stopped 10 yrds in  front of me . It was the triplets ,yet again ,but then I heard his steady crunch....crunch...crunch coming in directly behind me...I knew it to be a buck but not the size. I said don't even look it's going to be bigger than those fawns..went in a bit back for he was in a stride, and I had to be quick not to spook the fawns shouldering the bow...... but it came out behind his elbow. Well the work begins ...he was just loaded with engorged ticks...

I'm back ..like I said a little guy but it's meat in the freezer and doe just don't want to show...he actually has 6 small points but I don't think that one is a legal point? I don't know how that works..I know 3 in for a spike... Well I got to get him hung skinned and quartered before the rain....pulled cards...still some OK bucks around and some doe just at midnight to 3am

That sucks....do you think that he chose to not listen to your instructions, or is he not the sharpest knife in the drawer?

I tried being a good guy many, many times. And tried taking extended family,  social friends and co-workers hunting, on our farm property. 90 percent of the time, it ended in a circus act, me being ticked off, hard feelings on someones part or all of the above. Now it's just my lifelong friend / land partner and our "close" families. Once in a great while I will invite someone to hunt my lake property. Only after I consider them to be an experienced, competent hunter. If I am mentoring a hunter, or hunting with someone I'm not real familiar with, I do it on state land. This seems to work well for me. And is much less aggravating!!!

Wow no good deed goes unpunished! I guess you should have walked him to the spot he was supposed to be!

Not sure why the above keeps showing.

Anyways , congrats grow. The 5 pointer i shot with my crossbow  i was thrilled about even though i have some bruisers im after. But i can tell you for sure the meat was tender as heck and there was no taste of gameness. Way to get it done, now go enjoy that healthy meat. First thing i did was eat the liver, then our next meal was tenderloins wrapped in bacon. If your buck is anything like mine, it will be delicious.

Sorry Buckmaster, live and learn. I learned last year when i brought a family member, there are some people that just dont listen. After i shot my buck on the gun opener last year i was dragging it to the road, and i saw someone walking around in my ditch along the stream, which i thought was a tresspasser. Turned out it was this family member that i had placed 100 yards from where he was walking, he was walking around on opening morning. Some people just cant follow direction or choose to act stupid. Mind you its approx. 40 acres so its not like its large to start stalking all over the place. Told him to stay in tree stand and dont walk around, and what does he do. Sometimes it doesnt pay to be nice. Get him and that deer out of there and forget about it, then go enjoy your hunt. Good luck....if your anything like me, people like that just tick me off.

So your guest disregards all parameters of the permission he was given, collects his deer on posted property where he had no business being and he is raising his voice to YOU?!  That's a special kind of person right there.

I am relatively new to hunting, but respecting another person's house rules would never be a question.  It's too bad that this person ruined the chance for another guy who might truly benefit from a hunting experience with you.

Just checked the trail cams for my little slice up here in 4L.  Nothing moving by (marsh and food plot) during daylight for the past week, and nothing moving at all after the 13th.  Lockdown up here on Taborton Mountain.

Below, you'll find a pic of what I think is a 3.5 8-point, but he only moved through at night.  He started showing on 11/9 and was a guest every night until 11/13.

And Buckmaster...  Man, that's a bad vibe that fella brought in with him, and I feel that disrespect.  I'm fortunate in that I've been allowed to hunt others' properties, and I get nervous about doing something wrong, or disrespecting wishes while there.  I hate that feeling, and I feel for ya in your current situation.  I love this hunting experience, but without an accompanying respect, it's freeloading and wanton killing, and I can't abide by that behavior.

But on a lighter note:

Congrats on the buck, Grow!  I bet those meals will satisfy beyond any fleeting moment of bragging...  It's one heck of an effort you've been putting in to get it done!

      Hi Everyone,
It is current the last week for regular season in upstate NY. Living the life working and being a full time student, I have some time off this week and would like to take a ride upstate to do a gun hunt. Never have I hunted public land in the areas 3 G, F, or N and was looking for some recommendations and help! I had used the DEC info locator and found California Hill and thought I might go there. Is there any recommendations on areas to go to in any of the wmu’s? Or on California? Any help would be really appreciated!!

      best of holiday wishes!

Hello everyone I’m currently looking at a house in deposit ny I’ve been deer hunting for many year mainly in Columbia and Greene county never been to Broome county. Before anything I was just curious how is the hunting there ? I know there aren’t any antlered restrictions in Broome but are there monsters out there or is it mainly just small spike? If anyone from that county or knows about deposit and broome county would get back to me i would appreciate it. Hope everyone hunting today catch a big one thanks.

The procedure below to carry the bow is detailed below:
You have to use a cotton towel or something similar. You have to wrap it around the bowstring. Doing so ensures that it will not cause an injury with the bowstring coming in contact with your body. It will not be that sharp either. Once you cover the bowstring with the towel, you have to wear it like a sling. So that it will not fall away from your body. The best way to cover the bowstring is to use a large enough towel. You can wrap it around twice as well. When making a sling out of the cotton towel, you have to ensure that you tighten it to get a snug fit. In that case, it will not slip away. Consequently, it will remain in place. When using this technique to carry a bow on your back, it is essential to practice before going in the wilderness. Only when you can move briskly and without noise using the scanning mechanism should you go ahead with it. To remove the bow, you have to hold it at the bottom. After that, you have to slip it over your head as well as arm. Doing so ensures that you can remove it quickly. When trying to focus on a prey, you need to remove the bow quickly. The technique for removal that we have highlighted above can certainly help you do so.

I'm new to the area and looking for some places to hunt  the next few weekends through bow/muzzleloader season. I'm living in New Paltz, and the place that seems the most promising to me so far is Vernooy Kill State forrest, and north into Sundown. Has anyone had any luck in these areas? Is there anywhere better in the area I should check out? Any info is welcome

      Hi Everyone,
My name is Raul and I am a new hunter! I've been hunting public land for now, but have been suffering. I've done 2 10 hour sits at Kings Park and 3 10 hour sits at Rocky Point and haven't seen one deer. I use a treestand and use scent blocker. I also get there super early in the morning. I need help! I plan to go again this friday. I scouted Rocky point after the first day and always see sign and I try to hunt the areas, but no success. I hunt around 42 and 36 I think. If someone wants the exact spot I can send them it on a map. I am really just looking for help in any areas and everything. I have put so much effort yet all i want is to just see one that will keep moral up. Any help is really appreciated!
