LIVE From The Woods 2018 - Lets hear stories and see some pictures!

Recommended Posts

Back inside and off to work shortly. Had 1 deer come through the beans, then into the woods behind me. This was at 625, grunted at it and it came my way then went back. The frigid temps thursday will hopefully have them on thier feet early.

For whatever its worth, I am in Eldred, bit south of your camp, we didnt get any snow here, just wet snow that melted on contact.  I know its crazy up here with changing elevations, but just figured I would add that.

Ya it’s putting a damper on my hunt tomorrow. Daughter is going in the afternoon , windchill of 12, that rules out a stand, and the hut with heater still will be a challenge, with the large shooting window facing the wind .

Between the melting snow and light rain one has to improvise. In the Army we would rubber band a sandwhich baggie or wrap a condom over the barrel. In the woods unprepared one must improvise. Glad I put the scope covers on.9000e5b42efae4b61c7f2108c6256000.jpg

Whoohoo! Daughter just dropped a buck. But after a minute it got up and stumbled off. Thinks she hit it good, but possibly high. Gonna give it an hour and go after it.

At work. A machine was not doing what it should. So got a call to come in on vacation. No problem, easy fix. Should be out hunting by noon or so. Just hope to finally see a deer after three days of hunting! Grandson is on deck for tomorrow. Hoping the deer activity picks up for him.

Fingers crossed and good mojo sent to WNY, fetch him up John!

Funny you mention that.  I live about 10 mins from there.  It's long out of business, sold, fly by noght restaurant reopened it, sold, bought, bulldozed all to the ground, and now being rebuilt as a new Eldred Preserve I am hearing.

I haven't been there in nearly 25 years. My grandparents used to have a house on swinging bridge lake. Sold it then right after it sold they drained the lake to the bone for a couple years to do the dam. Then my parents had a house that we used to rent out on sacket lake. Man I'd love to go up to the new Eldred's preserve. Brings back some great memorkes with my Pops (my grandfather)

Good luck ! Went through that exact thing with my daughter a few years back, nice buck dropped in its tracks. Got up and walked off with two does, while she was posting pics on line .... very little blood , had another good hunter with us , never found or caught up,with .

If you hit the bones rising off the spine they drop right there, sometimes never getting up , other times never found .

Hoping for the best .

Small world, I am about a mile from  Highland Lake itself.  O commute through Glen Spey, Forestburgh, Oakland Valley and on down.  I used to call my Grandpa "Pop" I hunt with his Thermos he used to bring to work every single day, it has to be 50+ yrs old, and will keep coffee hot for literally the entire day.  I have had it still warm the next morning.  Not like today's garbage.  I will have to let you know when it is reopened.

Just got home a bit ago. This morning my BIL and I headed Out at sunrise. We got to the spot where the buck crossed the road and started sneaking in. About 150 yards in, my BIL says “there he is” and I looked Up just as he stood up from his bed. I btought My gun up and all I had Was a straight away ass shot. I moved To my left to try for a better angle and he started stepping forward. I raised My gun and fired and nailed a tree. I racked Another round and he started trotting, took a shot and missed again. We gave him a few and then went to look at his bed. Thrash marks and yote prints all over. No fresh blood though. We started tracking him and found no blood. We jumped him 2 more times in a couple of miles before the snow started coming down and we lost his trail.

I’m just sick and pissed right now at all of the things that went wrong in the last 26 hours. I’m taking the rest of today off to rest up and wash all of my sweaty clothes and reorganize my gear. My kids come home tonight for the rest of the week. I’ll have Haley out tomorrow.

      Hello,
I am in the process of purchasing my first rifle to go hunting deer for the first time.  However, I have received contradicting information regarding the types of rifles that are legal.  Based on what I have read, it appears that I am able to use a bolt-action rifle with a pistol grip and a detachable magazine which holds 10 rounds.  However, I have been told that this is not the case. I can't seem to find where this is stated.  Can any one here provide me with some insight into this? I'd really appreciate it.
      Thanks in Advanced,
      Alfredo

Hello to all my fellow bow hunters! Here's a question for you, if you had the chance to hunt and win $50,000, would you do it? Well your chance has come! It's the Bone Collector North American Whitetail Championship! The biggest and most exciting deer hunting tournament that's ever hit the whitetail woods! Here's how it works, throughout the USA and Canada, there's 14 different regions, New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey would be considered as Region 1, the bow hunter that harvests the largest P&Y scoring buck in he or she's region will qualify for a championship hunt in the land of Giants, (KANSAS) at Wicked Outfitters for a chance to win $50,000!!  You may ask, is there an entry fee? Yes, there is a $300 entry fee, but here's the cool part, when you sign up, the crew at the championship will send you a gear package in the mail with over $400 worth of hunting gear! You will also have your name put in for hunt give away drawings and product give a ways! How cool is that!? You might be thinking to yourself, I don't have a big enough buck to hunt that i can win anything with. NOT the case, if you harvest a buck and enter it into the tournament, you will be put in for another drawing for the Kansas HUNT! How do you sign up? Simply go to www.nawtc.com fill out the entry form that's required for you to sign up, and your ready to go! When your filling out the entry form, you will see where it says referral, type in our email address crossovertheriveroutdoors@gmail.com to let the guys at the championship know that your signing up through us! Watch the video below about the Bone Collector North American Whitetail Championship and enter today!  Last year I was blessed to be the region 1 winner of this great tournament, and i'm currently getting ready to head for Kansas for the championship hunt! I couldn't believe that God gave this opportunity to me! Check out the hunt that one me the region and if you want to see how the championship hunt unfolds for me, follow me on Instagram, Facebook @ Cross Over the River Outdoors! Please also Subscribe to my YouTube channel, also Cross Over the River Outdoors! Good luck to every one this fall! and as always God Bless!

Maybe im jumpin the gun a bit quick but.....
As the 2019 deer season is coming fast and the live from the woods thread is going to light up like a christmas tree(better train this kid at work fast so i can follow up on all the deer porn)...The quickly approaching season has got new topics popping up and me getting antsy sooo......
Is there anyone with a new approach to this years season different from the past?
      Different preparations for the season,etc.
Accomplishment's/goals you are shooting for in the 2019 season?
      Shorter/longer sits etc.

      A few of mine..
1.Prep by shooting as much as possible
2.Spend as much time as i can in my "happy place"(always been my peaceful place)
3.Get my first mount done so i can hang it on the wall at the first house(bare spot!)
4.Get neccessary equipment for processing my own deer in the garage(needs a good cleanin before opening day!!)
5.See the smile on Jay's(turkeyfeathers) face with his first bow harvest!!!!
6.Be blessed and thankful to be able to spend time in the great outdoors.cherish every moment of the woods coming alive at day break(g/f doesnt understand it!!!)<<but im ok with that
This year has flew by and season will be here before we know it.This post is a bit early but im pumped and ready for some woods time!!!!
