dinorocks
Each year for the last 10 years or so my son and I would travel up to Northern NY in early November for a long weekend of trapping. Last year was the first year we missed the trip (Covid travel restrictions) and this year my son is a freshman at college, has a part time job (at Orvis:-), and is traveling for sports…unfortunately not much free time for him right now. This year, because I would be solo, I decided I would continue with the trip and spend about three weeks trapping, hunting with my flintlock and stick bow, and fishing out of a “primitive” base camp that I would set up. A couple months ago I scouted out a spot for my camp…did some hand clearing , built some furniture, figured out my firewood/water supply, and prepped an area to put my fur up. I recently arrived at my spot (on a very frosty morning) and got my camp set up. I thought some of you would enjoy following along; cell reception is very unreliable where i have my camp set up but I’ll try to check in every couple days.

Marion
That trip looks so incredibly cool! I wish I had the knowledge or even the time to attain and learn the knowledge to do that. Never ceases to amaze me. Keep it up!
dinorocks
I was able to get a few traps out after getting camp set; on my first check I caught a muskrat and a boar coon. I should state that my trapping goal is not to put up big numbers or target certain species…I want to catch a variety of fur, and have fun scouting, trying different sets, and putting fur up!

dinorocks
Finished up early the other day and spent the afternoon looking for deer…found lots but no bucks (a deer hanging in camp would be cool)!
Otto
A cartoucherie board and Knob Creek! Now that’s living!
dinorocks
Tough crowd the other day! (Porky got a free pass…I have put one up in the past but very awkward to flesh and tan with all the quills on the other side)
dinorocks
I was also rewarded with another rat, boar coon, and a beautiful big grey fox! I do love those MB-550 os…no paw damage and hopefully not too uncomfortable for the critters. I skinned the fox out with the claws and will tan him later.
wolc123
Are you going for beavers ? They made a mess out the creek I wanted to wade up that way this year. I also heard that they are pretty tasty. I wonder if muskrat taste similar, or coon ?
dinorocks
And with this post, I think I’m current. Today was a very busy day! …a good busy!! (Just remembered I left one of the coon I caught today at my set after remaking it…errrr. Should be fine when I grab it tomorrow (unless something else does before I do!)

Yes sir…although somehow I convinced my wife to join me for a couple days… she doesn’t know yet, but she will be muling back some fur and a bunch of fluorescent minerals I found when I was up last…wheels were close to rubbing the wheel well because of all the weight!

I have two beaver sets out …I learned my lesson last time I put a bunch of sets out…was skinning beaver until the wee hours of the night! Yes, I do eat the beaver…my favorite! I’ve eaten pretty much every critter out there at one time or another….except for bobcat…I’ll be trying that tomorrow.

Interested to hear how the bobcat tastes. The only thing I for sure wouldn’t try, would be coyote. Those are the only carcasses that I have thrown out back here, that the crows won’t even peck at. I think I remember a Meateater episode where they choked a little bit of that down but it didn’t look like they liked it too much.

That bobcat meat looks very similar to mountain lion meat. They both look like pork and im told is very good eating.
Culvercreek hunt club
This sounds like 3 weeks of heaven. I'm enjoying joining in....if only on the interment.
BizCT
Looks like an awesome setup. How did you fit all those tent supplies in your Jeep? Also, how did you like the taste of Bobcat? I've only had it once and it was just OK.
DirtTime
Camp set up looks awesome and it looks like you're doing pretty good with the trapping. I have to ask, is that knife in the pics a modded Old Hickory?
