  1. As many of you know, I am one of the more liberal members of this site. I think our country needs stricter gun laws. That is not to say I want law abiding citizens to lose the right to bear arms. I'm an avid hunter. My sons just turned 12 and I can not wait to be able to take them out this spring for their first turkeys. I live in NYC, where gun registration and 5 round max magazines are already the norm, and I'm OK with that. I think private sales at gun shows with no background checks are ridiculous. I believe fully automatic weapons should not be in the hands of private citizens. I don't think a fifty round drum is a necessity to have fun at the gun range. I could list more examples, but I think that is enough to give you an idea of where I stand. That being said, I also hate people who turn a national tragedy into disaster-porn, and use it to push an agenda. I despise articles that blindly condemn firearms, written by people who have absolutely no idea about how a gun works. Every time I see current buzz words like, "military-style", "high-capacity" or the ever popular "assault weapon" without any quantifying guidelines about the definition of such words, I cringe. Seriously, how is one supposed to interpret what a "military-style" weapon is? Last time I checked the M24 was still used by the Army. Does that make my Remington 700 "military-style"? Where is the line that separates "high-capacity" from a normal magazine? More than five? Ten? Twenty? I won't even comment on everything that gets called an "assault weapon" these days, it would take too long. I believe, as a nation, our gun laws are too relaxed. I believe there are measures that can be put into place which would help prevent tragedies like the ones that happened in Tucson and Aurora and Oak Creek and Newtown. If you are of mind set that any restrictions are evil and against our rights as citizens, you are a dinosaur and useless to this discussion. Equally useless is the other side of the spectrum. If you tell me "Weapon Free Zones" are the answer, I have two words for you, "Soft Targets". Banning responsible, law abiding citizens access to firearms should never, and will never, happen. Both sides need to come together and work towards making our country safer. I hope that our elected officials can focus more on common sense, and less on political posturing. No law can be passed that will completely eliminate the possibility of another catastrophe like this from happening. However, I do feel that changes can be made to lessen the likelihood. Our country is in mourning. Again. I wish that all of our representatives have the wisdom and the desire to help us heal. Edit: Fixed a typo.

  6. Steve. The military weapon argument is kind of tired. The majority of our hunting guns came from military developments. Revolvers- military. lever actions- Military. Bolt guns- were military developed. Semi Auto loaders. yup you guess it. Military again. Let's not use that as a basis for this discussion. Everyone is hung up on 30 round Mags. In those tight and UNARMED quarters a shotgun would be much deadlier. If our evaluation level is weapon capacity take a semi auto shotgun with a tube extender to 8 shot capacity and load it with F shot which is .22 caliber and a count of 39. That is equivelent to over 8 .....30 round mags. (there is a speed difference but at class room distances dead is dead) It is nuts to give an inch based on emotion and not fight this puish that is coming. If the hunting and target community spit from "other" gun owners it is only time. If you think otherwise you are mistaken. Side step the 2nd once and they will do it again because if you pulled every assault rifle off the street...I mean everyone and even every pistol, This will not stop. It isn't the root of the problem , The guns never have been, but those that want them gone are the problem becasue they are the same ones that feel you can't disciplinge you kids....can't hold people accountable. can't lock people up and leave them there, can't FRY them

  7. Well partner, I reckon you're probably wrong. I have the same policy toward them as I would have toward any business. I cannot and should not dictate what products any store stocks and sells unless I have some moral objection to it. I can't picture a situation where I would boycott a store based on something it doesn't sell. I don't deal with Dicks that much anyhow. But like any other store, if they have a product I want to buy and they have a good price on it, I'll be in there. Not every Walmart store sells a full complement of shooting and hunting equipment, and I haven't boycotted them because of it. That's a pretty silly notion.

  10. here it is guys Gun Control and the Second Amendment The Second Amendment states the citizens right to own and bear firearms. Freedom to pose arms is a guaranteed citizen right. If the constitutional rights of a citizen are violated, it can be a major issue. Gun control has been an issue for years. A majority of citizens believe that if gun control is strictly enforced it would demolish the threat of crime. Many innocent people feel they have the right to bear arms for protection and hunting. These people are penalized for protecting their lives or for enjoying an innocent sport. To enforce gun control throughout the nation, means violating a persons rights. Although some people feel that the issue of gun control will reduce crime, the issue should not exist due to the fact that guns are necessary for self defense against crime. Enforcing gun control is violating a citizens Second Amendment right to bear arms. Guns are evil and horrible to some because of the violence that they create. People feel guns are weapons of death. They believe that the more guns with which our society has access to, the greater the chance for accidents or violence involving fire arms to occur. It is a proven fact that handguns have been the murder weapon of choice. Guns are involved in lots of homicide cases. People believe that society relies on weapons that create harm and criminals, therefore, these weapons should be outlawed. However, law abiding citizens have the right to protect themselves against danger. In light of the recent shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, many people feel that the shooting would have been prevented if there was stricter gun control. I feel that had this very disturbed man wanted to harm those children he would have found a way to do so even if he had no guns. I also think that if all schools were to have an armed and trained officer or security guard on duty at all times this horrible tragedy possibly would not have happened or maybe more innocent lives would have been saved because the security guard would have been able to use his weapon to harm the shooter and protect the children. I was speaking with a friend about this issue recently. He said that he thinks it's okay if the Government takes away the ability for civilians to purchase and own all military issue weapons, such as the ones used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, but to take away sporting rifles used to feed families, such as mine and his, that is what he feels is really wrong. There are 12.6 million legal hunters in the US today. And I bet you a majority of those feed their families with the venison the animals provide. And for the people who do not eat what they kill, every state that allows hunting has a venison donation program that donates the uneaten meat to homeless shelters. So not only do guns provide protection, but they also provide food, jobs, memories, and hobbies for many people to enjoy. Due to the ownership of guns, burglaries have reduced greatly. This fact was proven with a poll taken after and before Australia banned all weapons. After the ban of guns, the number of burglaries went up due to the lack of self defense people can provide their families. A gun is a tool, guns don't kill people. People kill people. The matter depends on who is using the gun and what situation it is involved in. Purchasing a weapon legally is complex. When my father and I purchased our first gun, he had to enter all his personal information, so the store could run a background check on him. But even then he went to the store and purchased the gun and left with the gun the same day. The gun buyer must go through a two month waiting period to obtain a handgun. These procedures guarantee the innocence and reliability of a gun owner, or so they say. There should be NO military issue weapons available to purchase by civilians. You do not need an AR to hunt deer when a Remington hunting rifle does the same thing. I also feel to own a gun you need to have a hunting license, period. To obtain your hunting license you need to attend two and sometimes three full day classes and pass the over 100 question exam at the end of each day. The majority of the classes are safety and ethics, if you want a gun you need to know those rules. Even though I support the right to bear arms I do feel that they should do a more thorough procedure to be able to own a gun. I feel they should find a way to check back on the persons medical background to ensure they have no mental issues that may mean they are capable of harming others purposefully. Nothing can destroy a government more quickly than its failure to observe its own laws. This is why all citizens should be aware of all of their constitutional rights. Enforcing gun control is not going to have an effect on the crime rate, because it will not keep criminals from purchasing weapons. Gun owners have to protect themselves from these criminals, and all gun owners must be informed of their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

  12. I can never understand why people have trouble grasping this either Culver. There is a local radio station here that I haven't listened to in years because of opinions they have given on issues I feel strongly about. People are constantly telling me that I am being foolish because "they have a right to free speech". I realize that which is why I don't try to get them off the air, I just don't listen. Like somehow their right to say something I find reprehensible overrides my right to not listen. I don't shop at any of the big box sporting goods stores anyway because I prefer to give my business to my local archery/trapping/gun shops. If I were so inclined though I would probably look elsewhere now.

  13. I agree. But the gap between what I may come across as a threat in my life may have just gotten wider. Face it as you said if our military becomes a threat we don't stand a chance. But there is a very real possibllity I could run into a threat that restrictions could make me undergunned. Our decission how to best protect our families is being taken out of our hands.

  14. If the government decides to ban guns for citizens, Law enforcement should also not be allowed to carry, just like in England. Let them enforce the criminals with their sticks and whistles. We are a nation of checks and balances, and if our guns are stripped from us, who then will keep the military and government in check? The anti's in this forum probably never took US history, of how this nation came to be. We are here because we fought for our freedom, with guns. I'm not into high capacity mags, or assault rifles. But I would never think to ban them because I feel they are not the issue here. They've been used in mass murders, but so has bombs and planes and cars, we didn't ban those, did we? The US as a whole is going through a phase, a phase of depression, a phase of lack in education and of family morals. Top this with a phase to disarm and strip away the right for individuals to protect themselves, and this is the result. None of these kids or teachers were able to defend themselves. There's a lot of folks out there that are willing to put their lives on the line to protect others, if they were only allowed to do so by carrying.

  16. I simply don't think owning a pistol should automatically give one the right to carry it at all times. Sorry. Two different issues in my view. It's not the law currently in most places, so I don't think a CC should be made any easier. I personally think it's too easy in many places already.

  17. Easy. A federal gun card for everyone. NO one be it in a private transaction, or thru a dealer can purchase a gun without one. To get this gun card, one must go thru a background check and take a gun safety course, with some actual training on a range. I have said it before. The gun manufacturers don't sell their guns directly to criminals. Criminals obviously get them in one way or another from original LEGAL purchasers. Yeah, some are gotten thru stealing, but that is not always the case. Without some sort of regulations on private sales, the sky is the limit to what criminals can buy without any questions asked. NO, this will not stop all crime, and no one here ever said it would, but I'll be damned if it wouldn't be a better system than we currently have. We have hundreds and thousands of gun laws in this country, most of them are worth $#!+, when what's illegal in one state is perfectly legal in another. Without some uniformity we can't get anywhere. So here you go Doc and everyone. Now lets hear how you don't think this would help?

  23. lol .... there is this thing they call cutting of your nose to spite your face. Having read the article, I didn't see anywhere that Dick's was making any kind of judgement about the modern sporting rifles. They simply recognize that there is a mindless public paranoia at this time and have made what they consider to be a wise business decision .... which is exactly what they are supposed to do. If there had been some kind of negative editorial comment that went along with their decision, perhaps I would take on a different attitude. But I am not expecting any American business to fall on their sword simply to make some political statement. That's not how business is supposed to work. It's when they are trying to make some political statement that I find offensive that I start looking at whether they deserve my business. That's when they are getting into areas that they don't belong in. I don't see that as being the case so far.

  24. So if guns weren't part of the problem, why don't other civilized nations have nearly a fraction of the murders we do in this country?? Do we simply have more murderous tendencies here or what? If people would still kill as much even without guns, why don't other nations with strict gun laws have a murder rate closer to ours?? You would think they would, right? I simply will NEVER believe that guns don't make it easier, because they do. We had one person here saying that if piano wire was used in a murder we would want to ban pianos. What a lame freaking analogy. Let him show us even one piano wire murder, while guns murder scores of people each and every day in this country. I do want to keep my guns as much as the next guy, but I can see the reality here. I simply won't pretend that the easy availability of guns in this country don't play a part in all this.

  35. Well this one runs along very thick brush and a hardwoods, which like most hardwoods is thick along the edge. now i can walk in silently, instead of fighting my way through making all kinds of noise. The deer started using it the next day as well,so new places for stands. It also allows excess to an area instead of walking WAY around, is faster and easier to get deer out and stands in . Most folks who hunt thick areas need to cut trails, few to this extreme.....

  36. Shot this doe Saturday around 4:30 pm. She came out into a soybean foodplot with 3 other deer. Had a very rough season. No shots at mature bucks (Passed on 10 young bucks between bow and gun) and killed one other doe with a rifle opening day. I was elated to take this deer! And it was the first deer with my new TC omega. It was a 90 yard shot she was quartering to me just a bit, took her right behind the shoulder and took out one lung and the liver. Great way to wrap up the season with a great friend! congrats to everyone who had luck this year! Time to start prep for next year!

  37. Actually, I wouldn't have made a difference if it were a trophy buck. I don't hunt for antlers and they get thrown out with the rest of the carcass, no matter how big they are. I've yet to find a recipe that makes them edible. FWIW, I did fill out my last DMP and report it.

  38. OBAMA: We're a nation that believes in the Second Amendment, and I believe in the Second Amendment. We've got a long tradition of hunting and sportsmen and people who want to make sure they can protect themselves. My belief is that we have to enforce the laws we've already got, make sure that we're keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, those who are mentally ill. We've done a much better job in terms of background checks, but we've got more to do when it comes to enforcement. But weapons that were designed for soldiers in war theaters don't belong on our streets. Part of it is seeing if we can get an assault weapons ban reintroduced. But part of it is also looking at other sources of the violence. Because frankly, in my home town of Chicago, there's an awful lot of violence and they're not using AK-47s. They're using cheap hand guns.

  44. Please stop lying about my words. I even went to the trouble of re-quoting what I said and yet you still insist on saying that it was about people on this site. I will repeat that I did not include any words about people on this site. The first time you misquoted that it may have been a mistake. The second time it is a lie. The connection with someone on this site was first made by you when you became so indignant and began to defend these people. You put yourself in that bucket .... I didn't. As far as this thread never ending, I will say that I am only reacting to each of your posts. You seemed to have made a career out of attacking me and my opinion about the people that exploit these kinds of tragedies for their own agenda. That is your choice not mine. As far as your contention that I have alienated some people, imagine what people must think of you to be defending those that thrive on exploiting tragedy for their own ends. If I alienate those that believe that such callous exploitation is proper conduct, then I guess that probably is no big loss. I am even more sorry that there are people that believe that defending these people is the right thing to do. I find no possible defense for those that would exploit tragedies of any kind just to further their political causes. And I don't apologize for that nor do I find any common ground with those that do.

  48. I think this is a 2 sided discussion and both are pertinent to talk about. A) Would registering your guns one time with serial numbers with the state or fed gov't protect the gun owner if the guns were stolen or used in a crime? Would this in turn, over time, contribute to a major decrease in killings by thugs and criminals who obtain the guns illegally? I would not be against it because I actually intend to take pics of each gun I own with a 3x5 card listing the model and serial number for my homeowners insurance in case of theft. Also for proof to police that I did indeed own those guns and have been reported stolen in the event of their use in a murder. I also feel that each time a gun is purchased from an individual, the purchaser would pay a nominal fee, say $10 for the transfer thru a dealer. Pain in the ass... a little bit for sure. But you have to do this with handguns now any way. I feel that if this were to be implemented that, over time, it very well Could have an effect on reducing the number of senseless killings that go on in this country every day. Like I said elsewhere, even the sound minded individual who goes wacko because his wife left him for another man or a similar situation can never be foreseen or prevented. But if we could make a major decrease, over time, in the reckless acts of drive by shootings and house shootings, like where the 2 yo child was killed in his grammas arms when thugs shot through the front door of a house in Atlanta I'm all for it. I'm all in favor of trying to stop the day by day senseless acts of murder on people all over this country and if a well thought out plan that included registering my guns would help... I'm all for it.
