There have been many posts already about how members feel about AR. If you spend some time reading on the forum, you will find out how members feel about AR, if you really care or just want to kick a hornets nest for your enjoyment. I decided to hit ole reliable stand and took a doe estrus drag with me...at 200 yrds from the stand I got it out and started walking...the winds were very mild and I heard deer moving away in the woods on either side of me but no running or hysterics ....settled in and listened to movement then the squirrels and crow wake up...This stand has a fake scrape I made and next to it one a buck made exactly at 7:32 legal time... out stepped a buck...he was 120 yrds out and hit the drag line...sniffed around in a circle and I let out a muffled grunt....he then put his nose down and walked straight for me...as he got closer I saw he was carrying a thick short tined 8pt rack in brown and toffee colors just to the tips of his ears...and his feet looked too big for his legs..... That is a first for me...he was a 1 1/2 old nice 8pt...around here they are usually spikes to 6pts. Well he got to the scrapes scent pad and reached up and sniffed then went to the real scrape and stretched out his body broad side to me as he hit the licking branch...28 yrds and he might as well said heres a great shot at my heart..I never lifted the bow...he backed up hit the scrape then urinated...turned toward me again...at 18-20 yards he presented me with a nice standing shot at his left side...still never lifted the bow.... then he strolled on down to the swamp...leaving me there to ponder.....Did I just jinx my self...did I not say a good kill shot on a nice 8pt ,God willing?...and I turned it down...passing isn't the hard part ya know....it's living with it after.... But a 4 pt 13min later did the same thing then 100yrds out a buck (?) chased a doe a twins to the swamp and another young buck and 2 doe and 2 fawn came by...2 fox and lots of rodents....nice morning

In the stand I killed my doe out of earlier in the season. Saw 3 new scrapes on the way in. Already had deer walk through 2 shooting lanes. Owls hooting all around. Great start to the day.

This is complete nonsense..... a spike can and do grow into great bucks. This is basic deer biology. Also you CAN NOT affect the gene pool in wild free ranging deer... basic biology. Also the does genes make up impacts the buck off-springs antler potential, yes this is true. Here is a WNY buck that was a spike. So I was going to my car the other night and I heard a noise just inside the woods. I looked over and there was a grouse standing there. I made a squeeking noise with my mouth and it walked out of the woods into my yrd. I then made a drumming noise with my mouth and the thing ran right up to my feet and started scratching around in the grass. I just stood there still and didnt move. I was prolly standing there for 5 min when I decided my wife and daughter needed to see this so I reached into my pocket and hit the door lock on the car and the car horn beaped. The grouse never blinked an eye. My daughter came out on the porch and asked what i wanted I motioned for her to come up quitely and she did. As she rounded the car the grouse looked startled and froze. I told her to make a squeeking noise with her mouth. She bent down and made a squeeking noise with her mouth and the grouse walked up to her about a ft from her hand. Then my wife came out and knelt down beside her and started taking pics with a camera. It was really cool. I then had to leave for work so my wife and daughter walked forward alittle bit so I could back the car up and the grouse stood there the whole time. They said they stood there with it till it got to dark and they got to cold and they went inside. havent seen it since. I have heard of grouse who like to hang out with humans but i have never seen it till now. It was pretty neat.

At my evening spot. The wind is in favor for making a move on my target buck tonight. I'm in a pinch point 70 yards from his bed. There's a corn field to my left and a hay field that he frequents behind me. If he heads to either of them he should walk right by me. I saw his tracks all over the place on the way in. This stand has only been hunted once this year. Just need him to show...

Mostly doe and turkey with what I think is a porky,maybe,and a coon.

And one fact is if you shoot a 6 pt at 1.5 it never gets older.

was out with the cocker this afternoon and did well 2 woodcock 3 pheasants and a wood duck flushed. bagged one rooster and missed one of the wood cock. passed on the other and one of the pheasants flushed across a road . pretty good for just under 2 hours in blowing winds and rain.

My brother and I doubled on does last weekend. Only a houndred yards away from each other.

This is the first good buck I've seen so far all year. I made a mock scrape here ~10 days ago and keep it freshened, every couple of days. I make one in this same spot every year and it gets a lot of attention during the rut.

Early ---- don't hunt near any Oak Trees . That would be unfair to the deer .

you didn't answer my question. I planted a clover plot the size of my living room on a 5 acre spot behind the house I bought last year. It blends in pretty good with the clover that was already there. I don't hunt over it. Never shot a deer on this land although I could have. I'm sorry this bothers you. Guess I'll keep shooting deer on my other property in the transition between their beds and the cornfields... after I call the farmer and tell him to cut down his apple trees and stop planting his corn.

Definitely heating up...I took this 8Pt after watching him chase a 6Pt and a 3 or 4Pt, plus he was grunting a lot and rubbed a tree. They hung around for about 20 minutes until he finally presented me with about a 18 - 20 yard shot after chasing the 6 Pt for the second time.

I think he means checking zero. I hope you all do that. I feel a lot more confident knowing it's still zeroed.

After hearing some horror stories about new hunters kicking out people hunting land without asking the land owner and it coming back to bite them. Just ask the owner and do what ever they would like, and best of luck.

I know the feeling. Brad Paisley's waiting on a woman comes to mind. Always late for everything but want us home super early just to wait for them. haha

Had to stop to let a big mature buck cross the road in front of me on my way to camp this morning. Beautiful buck! He never looked, stopped, or had any concern, just slowly walked across the road in front of me. Of course, that got me excited for the morning hunt! Never saw a thing from the stand though (other than a coyote)! Figures...

I think any wife with a newborn child would get mighty pissed (and rightfully so) if all her husband thought about was how he could avoid helping out and how he could go hunting instead. A good husband and father gives priority to his wife and child. Hunting is not as important, actually it's way down on the list in the scheme of what should be important in life.

Just got back from tracking a 10 with my friend at night and we got him. He's thrilled as it's his first nice buck with the bow. Dressed 160 and was chasing.

Last night headed out to the stand around 2:30 looked like a good night overcast light rain/ sleet. Get to the stand 3:00 climb up hang my backpack up getting ready to pull my bow up and 4 doe walk in on me. Sat and waited them out finally left around 3:30. Pulled my bow up got setup finally 4:00 comes around hit the grunt call 3 times hear a crutch behind me look and there he was coming right in. Gave me a 20 yard shot ran 40 yards and dropped! I try to be as respectful as possible when hunting someone's land. It's what is best for everyone.

Got my first deer (ever!) last night! Got to say, I got a lot of insight from this group, tips, tricks, and hang in there support. Thanks to everyone I met a local man from this list, and he became a mentor to me (came out last night to help me track, field dress, and process, my doe). Thanks to all for being willing to support new hunters as we try to find our way

After 9 seasons in the stand I finally got my first Buck after he tried to foolishly chase a doe. Got a nice 35 yard shot. Didn't travel more than 60 yards walking and pausing for a few seconds each time until he bedded down and expired. I've cut out most of the carbs and have had good success losing weight slowly. Eating mostly protien, some vegtables. Lots of hiking/scouting to keep in shape.

Drwort - your mine kind of deer hunter, I like your attitude. Dstone101 - I assume your are talking about firearm season. On state land you should let the other hunters work for you. If your opening day location is in an area where other hunters might pass by or sit near you, then you are too close to your car. I suggest you scout the area and become comfortable out to one mile and look for escape travel lanes and thick cover. Look for sign like rubs and scrapes to let you know there is a buck in the area but I bet the deer will be on full aleart and heading for cover on opening day. Once you find a good area, use bright eyes (thumb tacks with reflective tape) to allow you to find your way back there in the morning. But the tacks on both sides of the trees and it will guide you back out in the evening.
