Well, I was able to break in my new rifle yesterday morning on the last day of the regular gun season...12/08/13! I ended up taking an 11 Point Buck at 9:40 AM hounding after a doe!5 points

I took off of work on Monday to get in one last day of hunting this year (I'm busy for the rest of ML season). After seeing no shoot-able bucks all bow and regular season, the extra day in the woods was well worth it. Small 8 pointer, but it's the biggest buck I've ever shot in 3H. The wound on its leg was a previous injury. My shot went in from the other side of the deer.4 points

Simply put that age class is very young and inexperienced no matter what size the rack spike to basket 8 included. They tend to throw caution to the wind and let hormones and instinct to mate take over. This lack of self preservation gets them into trouble. Older deer tend to be more wary and smarter. In so far as an accomplishment it depends on the hunters level and expectation. If it was the hunters first deer that is a great accomplishment and a perfect start! Hunting is what you want it to be. If getting any deer is good enough for that person then its great! To each his own I say. One of my hunting partners will shoot anything and I will congratulate him if he gets a spike, doe or big buck. I pass many deer but do not expect this of my hunting partners as some are meat hunters... Be happy with your harvest you are more successful that many. Everyone starts somewhere and if a spike is your first buck be proud.4 points

I totally disagree. How did anyone ever clean a gun before all the gimmick cleaners hit the market. Clean your gun with a solvent, then clean it with boiling water and patches and see how unclean it is with the solvent. Getting the water out is simple. It is called patches. Convenience is not always better. I have been using smokepoles since early 70's and have not lost a barrel yet2 points

I hunt in the northern zone and I hear a lot of follow up shots with rifles. I guess these guys must be hunting with those less accurate rifles. HA. What if a guy is good enough to shoot an arrow at 100 yards through a shotgun hole? Wait he shoots his arrow through the bologna sandwich then hits the shotgun hole, then the rifle hole. He wins.2 points

I hunted this weekend with no gloves on. If I did they were thin jersey material that I used during Bow season. The only reason I can do this is using a hand muff. I have had one for 6 years and it was the best money I have spent on hunting gear. I have never had cold hands using it and no bulky gloves. The one I have is neoprene so it is water proof.2 points

After a fruitful bow season I had a relatively good gun season. 11/16 AM: 11/25 PM: 12/02 AM: With my 4 archery harvests 2013 provided a personal best of 7 harvested deer, including a mature archery buck. I still have my reg tag to use on either sex for the late bow season. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

Took a pic and put it on Instagram .... Hey doing L and R's are hard ! My wife walks in room," how old are you? " 54. " How old do you think you are?" ,well I guess I feel as good a s most in their 30's do. " so you don't think your like 12." Um no. The why the F@$& would you do that!!?? Guess she was not happy about it. Told her if they did it on Duck Dynasty she'd be laughing about it.1 point

a spike (1.5 year old) will always be easier to kill in a given area than an older deer. i think you mean high pressured areas a spike where people actually shoot at them they'll be more wary, which i agree with. i agree too that old doe are hard to kill. that buck travels more than that old doe. she knows every spot she's busted you in the past and will walk into your stand with her eyes pegged on you the whole time. with the whole smart versus dumb thing. i think ALL deer are "smart" in the sense that they know how to avoid you if they wish, even a spike. a spike simply hasn't realized to what extent he has to avoid you. an older buck has been shot at, stalked, etc knows not to keep distance but to get the heck out of dodge.1 point

Just got the head back from the taxidermist on this monster I got last year. Typical 6x6 frame with Palmation on both sides. What do you think he would score? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Good luck. I'd take it too. Things change. Even in my hometown in NW PA they cancel school at the drop of a hat these days. I honestly only recall twice that schools were cancelled growing up.1 point

You may want to look into what WNY suggested. I toured a property done this way and the use by the deer was unbelievable. The tonnage per acre of food and protein content exceeded their plots.1 point

I don't think there should be one dollar of tax payer money spent on the problem. Reduce the distance to the 250 or 150 and let the residents decide if they want to allow access to licensed hunters or wrap their property in wire.1 point
-
Why not let hunters who already paid for licenses and stamps hunt these deer rather than use tax dollars to pay sharpshooters?.Why everything in this state has to be a major clusterf@% is beyond me. In areas like eastern Long Island they should should have longer seasons, more tags, allow baiting and expand the use of crossbows to help reduce a herd that is obviously out of control using the current hunting methods.Like the snow goose explosion where they relaxed the rules to curtail expansion it shoud be the same for this particular herd.1 point

Last year was first time in my hunting life that I got a deer with my bow, gun (rifle or shotgun) and my muzzle loader. Since in 2013 I got a mature doe with my bow (early bow NZ), a mature 8 point (rifle), I'd like to get one with the muzzie.1 point
-
Sorry to hear about your stock. I dropped my bow out of the tree last year, DOH! All rifle/ML barrels should be covered with electrical tape to avoid those blockages.1 point
-
Well,I hunted more than most years, but passed a lot in bow .Saw many mature bucks but at a distance. One doe in bow that I gave away. Gun hunted my behind off.one in the freezer ,sure passed a lot early then things slowed. 3 mature bucks killed near me ,all of which i had on cam by my stands. By mature I mean 24 inch 8 pt, 12 pt with double split brows 12 inch g2s,High 8pt. All I had on cam. So,that was a disappointment in a way. Still a few slammers Around for ML. So I got out a lot ,meat in freezer, hunted with buddys that's really what it's about for me.1 point

I have had TSI done by loggers where they cut a lot of aspen, beech and maple that were crowding other good timber. I have also done about 5 acres of hinge cutting. I basically went through and cut anything that wasn't an oak or cherry in the whole area. I cut partially through it and pushed it over. I did this mostly 2 years ago and this year I noticed a huge difference in the amount of deer bedding on my property. And the key to it all with the professional logging was to LEAVE THE TOPS!! I have had tons of guys come to me asking to cut firewood and I said NO because the whole point of the cutting was to not just make room for the better timber but to give the deer security cover!!1 point

the 2010 model are the year when bushnell had issues, if you go to their website there is software that you can download that will hopefully fix your problem1 point

ah - well that I'd certainly agree with. I agree that a "pro" isn't going to want to take the time to do it that way. Nobody touches my deer except me. I'm way to fussy so I just do it myself. It's actually kind of therapeutic. (I know, I'm weird... I just never admit that to the wife. )1 point

+1 on the entire post.I also have the open shot, have had it 5 seasons, love it for all of the reasons mentioned above, also dislike the bulk for transport. I also would get a LW after my long list of other sweet hunting gear if I win the lottery, but for economy and functionality summit open shot is nice. I added grip tape to my platform cause I found it slick in adverse conditions. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Lol ..... it is interesting to watch the evolution of a thread. I believe that I have found the reply that actually touched off the accuracy thing between a shotgun and rifle. The implication as I read it is that the shotgun is so much less accurate than a rifle that hunters in the southern zone have to empty their magazine in order to get a deer down....lol. And this accounted for why some members were indicating that their lives are in mortal danger and they are nearly too terrified to go in the woods with slugs literally spraying the trees. Man I haven't heard so much BS and over generalization in a long time ... lol.1 point

Wait until they let those guy's in the woods with those x-guns then you better duck and cover!!!1 point

This past weekend was a pretty good one for me. I ended up at a poker game until 3am on Friday night, so when Saturday morning rolled around, I said the heck with it and stayed home. I got all of my venison ground up, packaged and then put a nice package of 30ish lbs of meat together for the manager of the farms I hunt. Sunday morning, a friend of mine was meeting me at my place so I could take her down to the farm and see if we couldnt knock down another deer or two. She got there around 5:30 and we loaded up and took off. For the morning, we went to a double hang on set that has produced alot of venison this year, albeit all of the kills had been in the evening. We heard some deer moving through the thick bedding area just 50 yards away, but didnt see anything once it got light out. We heard a shot come from the farm and I got a text that one of the other guys had dropped a buck over on the other side of the farm. I decided around 9:30 to get out of the stand and take a slow walk around the perimeter of the cow pasture to see if we couldnt find some feeding or bedded deer. We ended up kicking up 3 does, but that was about it. We wandered over to meet up with the other guys, and see what was on the ground. It was a small 6, and was the guy's first buck. After congrats, and shooting the breeze for a bit, we headed down to check a trail cam and go back to the truck. We headed down to the local diner and had a bite to eat, then stopped by my buddy's place to put a plan together for the afternoon. I thought the guys might be wanting to do some drives on other properties, but everyone seems to be about deer'ed out for the year. I decided we would head down to the swamp, and sit on the last standing corn for the afternoon. We got down there and got set up, and what rolls out in to the corn, but the combine! Sweet! We were setup perfectly to intercept deer heading from the field to the woods. After the farmer hit the edges of the field and emptied the combine, he started on his long rows. On his second pass in our direction, 2 big does and a doe fawn blasted out of the corn just ahead of the combine. I watched as they ran out into the neighboring hay field and headed right toward the corner where I was posted. All three ended up 40 to 45 yards from my stand, and when all was said and done, my Mossberg 500 20 ga put one of them on the ground. I climbed down to make sure she was dead, and then headed for the truck to put my shotgun away and grab the muzzle loader. I moved my friend to the stand I had been sitting in, as its one of the better stands, and I figured it had the best chance of more deer going by it in the afternoon. I hopped up in another stand and we sat out the rest of the afternoon. No more deer for the day. We got my doe taken care of, loaded up and headed home for a backstrap dinner. It was a great end to the gun season. I will probably get 1, maybe 2 hunts in next weekend for muzzle loader season, but thats about it. At this point my score is 6 deer. I gave one away to the farm manager, and have 5 left in my freezer. I wont be shooting any more does next weekend. I will be out for one deer in particular, to finish up my 3 year chess match with him. Hayrake. Hopefully the rest of the corn is gone by then, as it gives him less places to feed under cover. Hopefully I can finally put him down. It sure would be some great icing to one hell of a deer season!1 point

I'm not buying the whole outsmart a mature doe speel if you want a real challenge. I bet the majority of "mature doe" that are killed every year are also 1 1/2 year olds.1 point

Knob Creek,. I want to get down one of these years. I went to one 4 years in a row up in Maine. It was a rush to watch and even more fun the two years I bought a firing line pass and shot some of the guns. They had one session that was suppressed fire. Some of the silencers were great. One 22lr all you could hear was the action slamming on the cycle and the bullet hitting the target. At night they had a whole session and it was tracers galore. These guys had more than every fifth round. must have been tough on the barrels but it was like a star wars movie. the tracers looked like lasers.. I saw one demo with a trailer mounted double mini gun. It took a bus and in minutes sliced it like a loaf of bread1 point

Hmmmm... An hour and a half before sunrise....Then it was Wednesday afternoon... Am I the only one who is confused by this post ? AND wouldn't somebody trying to recovered a wounded deer be AT LEAST as important as your morning hunt..? How could having your one morning hunt interrupted cost you $300? I am SO confused... I think it's time for my NAP...1 point
