This was the first year I have ever went hunting and have absolutely fallen in love with it. Picked up a bow in late october and on my first sit ever, saw a nice 7 ptr and took a shot and missed him! Ever since then I have passed a bunch of does been playing a game of cat and mouse with this guy. I have seen him during the day on two other occasions, but was well outside of my range. I keep picking him up on my trail camera and seems he has went completely nocturnal ( unfortunately I may have spooked him). this passed saturday night I pull into my buddies house ( where I have been hunting) to crack a few beers when I look out the window and see him... my deer just staring at me from 50 yards away on the side of his house. After looking at him for about 15 seconds, I turn the car off and he just takes off and disappears into the woods. I dont know if I was excited or pissed off, but was definitely cool checking him out. I come back 4 days later to check my camera and seems he was moving around the area around 6am that day. This buck has gotten in my head and he has my number big time! I read a really good article on "Bowhunting" magazine about post rut hunting and nocturnal bucks slipping up in certain circumstances. I am going to lay off the hunting pressure until one of these situations comes up, then I am going in hard. Regardless if I take him or not, the back and forth between this guy alone has been fun as hell... and just means that he will be an nice slammer next season. Pic of him4 points

Shot her on the last evening of bow season. It was a great end to a long season. Not here to start the shoot or pass conversation. I am one proud and honored hunter to even see a piebald let alone take one with the bow.3 points

Why? what happened in your "first-hand experience"? It could be a 12" buck and I'm shooting it.3 points

I waited to get my hunting licence (big game and archery) untill the day before the bow opener this year. Right about the second week of October I got a fall turkey hunter survey in the mail from the DEC asking me to log bird sightings.., how many I saw and shot at..., how many I saw but no shot..,how many I killed.., with what weapon.. etc. etc. I just tossed it aside with my other junk mail because this year I didn't bother purchasing the 2013-14 turkey stamp. I had no intentions on hunting fall birds so I'll wait till spring to decide if I'm going to get a turkey tag or not. Today I got another letter from DEC asking me to promply fill out and return my fall turkey hunters survey so they can use the data for determining pressure on fall birds and future management decisions. The survey clearly states the info was to be obtained while pursuing turkey this fall whether successfull or not. While I'd certainly be more than willing to share with them my observations while pursuing other game, I wouldn't want to record data that may sound "incriminating" or insinuate I was actually hunting turkey at some point. I mean, do they expect me to return the survey saying I killed half a dozen longbeards , 4 hens, and 8 poults even though I don't have a tag,lol Oh, just to clarify.., I don't believe they were really trying to frame me. I do however believe they could have done a better job determining who they send these surveys to if they're looking for accurate feedback. I would think they would want these surveys in the hands of guys who actually hold a valid turkey stamp and just might give a darn. Anyone else get this survey but wasn't really qualified to record data?2 points

Here's a little update to this old brute...2013 version. http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/13878-my-2012-13-shed-journal/page-3 He's gotta be at least 8 years old now!!! Hopefully, I can grab these sheds in a few weeks...2 points

yea that's not good.... that means it's mother didn't get bred in her first cycle i'm thinking. either that or a young fawn doe finally got up to weight and came into estrous later. hope it makes it too. I think you did the right thing. I can't imagine you'd get much of anything meat wise from it and to shoot a deer just to shoot a deer isn't right.2 points

While I had been holding out for those yummy horns (and still am), I had never taken a deer with my CVA Optima. It's fitted with a nice Nikon 3to9, but I didn't really need it during this hunt. Had 7 deer (2 bb's and 5 doe) come in to feed on the apples as they have been all season. All season I've let them walk, hoping that just once one of the nice bucks I had on my cams would be in tow. I took the largest. She weighed in at 111 lbs. dressed, but looks bigger hanging. She will taste great. I have not shot a doe in over 5 years, and to see 2 of this year's drops (healthy size) come back and walk around the body was a little tough to watch. 10 yards in the heart. She went 20 yards stopped... i thought i missed. Stood there for 10 seconds, then took one bound and collapsed. I waited about an hour as the 2 deer I mentioned came back and then bedded down nearby. As I was gutting her they had come in even closer and were blowing at me. Maybe a reminder why I don't like shooting the moms2 points

Replies like yours makes me wonder how sites like these survived . If everyone on here searched the net for their answers instead of asking it here this site and many others would not be around. Just trying to see what local weathermen are saying that's all. Thanks for nothing.2 points

Opening weekend of bow I saw a little tiny fawn in spots. Saw it maybe a month later run under my tree stand. Then during gun it disappeared. Saw it again on Sunday. Dont think it had grown at all and still had its spots. I swear it was smaller than my old (fat) lab.. Someone had a shot at it, gun to shoulder. It stood broadside 30 yards or so looking at us. He put the gun down and said he couldnt do it. I couldnt either. Much as i wanted a deer this season, I didnt want to take this one. Hopefully it will make the winter.1 point

Having grown up in a military household, my father retired with 23 years of service while in his early to mid 40s. Bottom line, it's a risk-reward logic scenario. More risk, more reward. The problems that come with long-time service are big for many people - and most of it is beyond the actual service. Not much is said what happens to military families as a result of those commitments. I enjoyed a lot of experiences due to my father's service, but to this day, we both have paid a bigger price with lost time, resentment, and other issues. Time cannot be reclaimed. I see all of these CNN and Fox and local news snippets about parents returning stateside, showing them surprising their wife or kids after seven months abroad ONCE. They light up. You want to know how many times I went through my father being gone 6 mos. or more? You'd be counting on your dang toes because you ran out of fingers. Let 'em keep the damn money.1 point

Droptine I do not disagree with you...I have no doubt that there could be a small number in the state....I know we have Bobcats here..just because while house hunting close to our place I looked out the owners sun room door and there sat a beautiful one on the edge of the lawn watching the house many years ago...I've never seen one since but I have heard them in the spring at night...a tad worse that a fox ..scarier than a raccoon fight... If the screen isn't lighting up...the firmware isn't going to help. There's a bigger, separate issue going on with it. 2010 model trophy cams were a disaster. I'd see if you can get an RA from bushnell - chances are they'll tell you, you are out of luck given the 2010 model year if it was purchased two plus years ago. Maybe you will though. Let us know how you make out. They may offer you a discount on a new cam.1 point

You cant possibly be serious? He might as well buy a recurve if he's gonna get one of those old relics. You need to get the best equipment you can afford. If you can afford a $300 modern bow why would you buy a $100 antique? Listen to most everyones advice on here and go to a pro shop and shoot as many different bows as you can. From there, the bow usually picks you.1 point

reporting system has got to be changed or deer numbers will go down and down and down. they think fewer deer have been taken then really have been. they issue more permits the following year. they then push to get permits filled when all really would be if everybody reported their deer.1 point

thanks for all the help, went with Guide Gear® 2,000 gram WATERPROOF, 11 1/2" Side - zip Boots cost me 90 bucks with shipping. was the most insulation I could get with the amount of cash I had. there were a few that were suggested that I would like to get but with less insulation. though I don't think these will be good for stalking around, for treestanding they should be fine. will look into some thing else when the season is over if the wife lets me blow some more cash if I get a deer im good, if not mmmmaaaybe not1 point

Well bagged a buck on the last day of regular season! I went up to camp with my buddy, was not really expecting anything because I hunted 10 days straight from the opener, and saw plenty of deer, just not anything I wanted to shoot. (Except a doe I took) This large buck decided to step out. An 8, but weighed more than me, lol. (I am 5' 10" 187)1 point

I absolutely love ice fishing! Sitting in the shanty being able to bull shit with the guys for hours and watching the fish come up to the lure through the hole is such a great time. I just wish there was more ice around here, seems like it's mid January before we can even get on the ice. This year may be a tough one since my fishing partner's wife is expecting to deliver any day now. I'm taking up offers of people who want to fish the Cap Region this year.1 point

It is already being hunted, yet hunters aren't making much of a dent. You can extend the seasons, but you can't let private landowners allow hunters on their land if they don't want to. So extended seasons wouldn't help. Plus, you have to remember that many of the hunters who are hunting the island already, are out there looking for one of the big bucks that roam there. Good luck convincing any of these hunters to put aside their trophy hunting time to help cull the herd. Won't happen. Even those who do take a buck early in the season can get plenty of doe tags afterwards, yet few go out again just for the sake of reducing the herd if they don't need the meat themselves. Even the sharpshooters may not make much of a dent, but surely will make more of a dent than sport hunters on LI where access to private land is the main problem.1 point

You may want to look into what WNY suggested. I toured a property done this way and the use by the deer was unbelievable. The tonnage per acre of food and protein content exceeded their plots.1 point

Met up with Alan at the Burger King in Fishers at 6 am . He led the way and it was like a convoy . He calls the hunting a Co-op and has to schedule when he wants to hunt with the land owners ( 4 days only ) . There were specific rules as to where to park , which direction to shoot , the line you had to be beyond before loading any guns , and no guts could be left on the property . There were 10 of us and I was dropped off at a spot to watch over a gully . Heard shots here and there . Around 10 am , I heard 3 quick shots and all of a sudden 6 deer came hauling ass about 30 yards in front of me . They were too fast and it wouldn't have been a safe shot . The only possibility I had for a shot was a fork horn about 120 yards down the bank . I cranked off a shot while he was moving slow and missed . Climbed down the bank to check it out and no blood . Found out later that Alan shot it so someone got a deer . My hands and body were sooooooooo cold and i'm not sure that I like the accu-trigger on the Savage 220F . Around noon I walked back to the car . It was almost a mile away and downhill . Got something to eat / drink and went back until 4 pm . Didn't see anything in the afternoon . I was told that there was no hunting across the gully on the other side of a foot / bike trail as a couple of doctors own that property and don't allow hunting . I had heard shots over there and Alan said I must be wrong . One of the guys in our party hit a doe and trailed it over there and found a guy in "full camo" that finished it off . We were guessing that he wasn't supposed to be there . Heard several shots come from over there in the morning. A couple of the crew were in their 80's . I asked Alan if we needed to show our AARP cards to hunt that property . Anyway I saw deer ........1 point

Heres my 2013 Regular season buck! Hes not the big boy I was after, but Im happy with him and have a good story to go with him. Earlier this year at work, I met a girl, Sara, that is from Cypress and goes to one of the local colleges. She was doing an internship at one of my client's offices. We developed a good friendship, and in talking, I mentioned to her that I hunt. She told me she has always wanted to go hunting, and that she was thinking of getting her safety course done and buying her license this year. I helped her with all of the info she needed, but she never had a chance to take the course, with her busy schedule. A coupl of weeks ago, I was talking to her and asked if she would like to come along with me on a hunt this week, since I was on vacation, and she had Thanksgiving break from school. She said yes, and we planned it for this morning. She got to my place at 5:30 this morning, and I got the truck loaded up and we headed out. We were in my newly placed double ladder stand before daylight and sat there talking a bit and enjoying the woods, and great scenery. Around 9:30, my hunting partner, Mark, gave me a call and told me he was going to do a still hunt, and asked where Id like him to go, so if he bumped anything out, it might head toward us. I told him where I thought would work well and he said he would see us soon. I explained to Sara what was going to happen, and told her that if Mark disturbed any deer, they would either go one of two ways. One way would put them right in our laps. Less than 10 minutes later, I see a deer heading across the field, right toward us, so I nudged Sara to show her the deer. I decided that unless it was a small buck, I would take the deer if given the chance. As it crossed the field, I noticed it had a very nice, big body, so we watched as it approached the edge of the woods. It stopped before entering the woods, and stood there, looking around. As it entered the wood line, I noticed it had a rack, so I put my scope on him and saw he was outside the ears. That was the last I looked at his rack, and I looked his body over. He was a tank, so I started concentrating on a shot. He got onto a horse trail that goes by my stand at 30 yards and started trotting toward us. I got my gun ready, and accidentally made a noise on the blind material. He stood there looking at us, with his vitals behind a tree. After 30 seconds or so, he continued down the trail and I got my muzzle loader in position for a shot in the first shooting lane. As he stepped into the lane, I gave him a quick "mehhh" and he stopped, slightly quartering to us. I put my crosshair right on the front of his shoulder and squeezed the trigger. I heard the impact and he dropped his tail and head and started on a dead run. After giving him 2 hours, and a 100 - 125 yard track, we found him piled up in the old apple orchard. Hes a great 2 1/2 year old with 8 scorable points, but he has a 9h small point and you can see where a 10th small one had broken off. BTW, I have a ton of trail cam pics of this deer, including a series of him fighting with another buck. Ill post those in my hunting journal later on today.1 point

Got it done today guys and gals! Bagged an 8pt!!!! I walked into the woods at 730am. I went in this morning hoping to fill a dmp tag, but instead this guy showed up. As i walked into the spot where I saw 2 giants during bow season, i decided to take a gamble and go in to the exact location, but upon entering the location, a guy was in a tree stand 10 yrds off to my right so i backed out. I said under my breath a bunch of choice words that were inappropriate and not like myself. So I waved and walked away. Upon leaving the first spot, I radioed my pop and told him i was going to go to the top of the mountain where he harvested a 4 pt about 1 week ago from today. He said okay, be safe and good luck since it was a little slippery due to the snow fall. So as i got to the top, i saw tracks and rubs everywhere and said this is going to be a good spot and decided to sit on a COLD AS HELL rock and text my dad i am in a prime spot and will walk down to him at 10 to get him. The wind today was whipping around like no other and at the same point i said to myself today is too windy and i would not see anything. So after 30 min of sitting my mom texted me to get milk on the way home, and asked if i see anything. So being a good son i said sure, and that it was super windy and was not expecting to see anything today. After 2 min of sending the message this guy ran the ridge right to me, ending up to be 30 yrds from me and came to a full stop. Him and i ended up having a staring contest for what seemed to be forever! so i slowly grabbed my 06 and put the cross hairs on his shoulder, I squeezed softly and boom he buckled and ran 100 yrds to my left up on another ridge. under my breath i said dang did i miss? so i waited 5 min and walked to where i shot him, immediately i see a blood trail! i said hell yes thank the good lord he allowed me to harvest a great animal and now its time to put in the work. As i followed the blood trail i got with in 20 yrs and saw he was laying down. So to be safe i put another round in just in case. As I took anther step he jumped up and ran 5 yrds and stopped, that is where i took the safety off and put another round right through his lungs. He then ran another 100 yrs to the base of the mountain. I radioed my pop and told him i shot a buck and its at the base. He said he would be right over with my brother to help me drag the big boy and get him out. after gutting him and dragging him out of the woods it was 1pm! we all looked at eachother and realized crap, we need to get home and still get milk for our mom. Today was a successful hunt, and we were all excited to get the big boy home and get ready for the big feast! As for tomorrow we wont be going out cause we have to process him and get him to the taxidermist! good luck everyone! they big boys are still on the run!1 point

I managed to fill my regular season buck tag today with a nice 6'er! I wasn't even going to go out because of the weather and no sightings lately. I froze my butt off for 4hrs before this fella came running in from behind me right around noon. When I stood up to grab my smokepole my treestand let out a God awefull groan and he ran away from me. Unfortunately for him, he didn't run far enough before he stopped, and I dropped 'em in his tracks! Not to toot my own horn... but I don't miss with this gun! As I was gutting him, I had 4 antlerless stroll by me at 20yds, and on my way dragging him out I bumped into 4 more antlerless on the trail home. I can still go out for late ML season but only got the antlerless tag so I'll see how cold it is,lol Looks like shed season will come early again this year!1 point
