My First buck, and the mount came out great! well at least I think so. Added him right to the living room wall. Thinking about putting the arrow that I got him with up in in his antlers and maybe a little plaque putting the year/location with the bow name. So Shout out to my Taxidermist Joe! From Fin and Feather right here in the hudson valley. He did an amazing job If you ever come across this post - Thanks again!4 points

been a crazy first week, congrats to all that have connected so far. I think I posted a pic of my first day gobbler in NY. I passed up a 2 year old the second day, and again on saturday. sunday didn't hear a bird n the roost and left a gobbling bird at another location since I had to load up the truck and head to Pa. got to Pa mid afternoon and started working on the new addition foundation till we had a breakdown. the breakdown allowed me to go try to put a gobbler to bed. found a good one with a couple hens, I knew what tree he was going to. Monday morning at 0 dark 30 I was setting against a big poplar tree and 2 hours later when the sky started to lighten up I could see the 2 hens about 70 yards above me. had 7 gobblers around me within 200 yards, the target bird didn't gobble till just about 6 am and only once at that. 5 gobblers and 2 hens flew out to the far end of the cut corn field, the 2 hens above me pitched out and landed along the edge about 10 yards from me and worked the edge. the target gobbler was roosted right below the hens and only about 10 feet off the ground in the tangle of grapevines. a few clucks and soft yelps brought him right to the gun barrel drumming and strutting hard. at 20 yards and 6:15 am it was over. at the shot he hit the forest floor and started wing flapping and I hear birds agressively purring, I look towards the corn field and 2 jakes are running at full speed towards me. I get the bright idea to try and video what I suspect is them beating up the dead bird. I got a new dumb phone a couple weeks ago and when I turned on the video and those jakes hit the woods they keyed right on me.... I guess the camera light (flash) was on.. so they piddled around there looking at the bird laying there and then walked off. 21 lbs, 10 1/2" beard, 1 inch needle sharp spurs. monday late morning friends if mine from louisiana showed up for a few days of turkey hunting,,, Tuesday Dave missed a big longbeard that somehow got around him and Marjie came up to me and then got spooky and walked back by them and he missed it. Wed. morning we had a bunch of gobblers below us and the boss hen to my left. after I did a limb crashing flydown the gobblers went ballistic and the boss hen came unglued!! The fight of who was gonna have the last word ensued.. the gobblers were just blasting gobbles non stop! I see 2 white heads in front of the shooters.... 3 shots later and no bird....... not a clue what happened! I went back to digging my foundation. wed evening Marjie said she would like to see a bear before going back south,,, second field we checked in the evening for gobblers had 2 long beards going into the woods.... 300 yards below them is a sow with 3 cubs! they got some pics and off to the next field. thursday am found us standing along the field where we watched the 2 gobblers but not a peep from them where we saw them the evening before but they were hammering a couple hundred yards north of there. so we were off, I mentally marked the other 8 gobblers locations. once they started coming in they wouldn't shut up my fears of them gobbling too much were realized when they were just about to exit the pasture and enter the woods right in front of the shooters.... someone drove right up into the field where the birds were, I saw the truck slowly coming sown the other road about 5 minutes prior and just had that gut feeling he was gonna pull a bonehead move! we let things settle and heard the vehicle leaving the field, I waited about 5 minutes and started up calling again and was immediatly met with 2 more gobblers advancing with a loud mouth hen. ended up having 2 jakes get within 10 feet of me and the hen skirted us. I got back last night and my buddy called me to hunt this morning south of here, got there at 4:30 am. first spot had some person setting way back in the field in a vehicle with all the lights on????? off to the next farm, heard 6 birds, go set up on the hottest one and he was on the ground and coming.. I hear a hen 100 yards to my left, again, and again,,, I told my buddy thats a person, nope I have exclusive rights here and its heavily posted... I said theres birds gobbling those posters do not mean a thing to some people... sure enough soon after that conversation the gobbling ceased from all the birds! while we were trying to slip back to the truck we ran across the tresspassers boot tracks.. we get to another spot mid morning, trolling along and we strike a bird, set up and work on him.. after a while he finally sneaks in but he knows something isn't right and we really were not in a great set up spot. he did get clear enough to see a longbeard on him but his head was on the small side so I surmized him to be a 2 year old and let him sneak away.... we moved a couple more times trying to get onto the other bird that had gobbled a couple times during the calling session from the previous bird. finally the3rd set up felt right and the bird was responsive. he certainly didn't run in but e was steadily walking in and finally stepped out gobbled a couple times and finally started getting spooky as there was no hen where he heard it before. I settled the crosshairs on the side of his head and he crumbled to the ground at the shot. 22lb 10 3/8" beard 1 1/4" spurs..... a decent bird to end my NY season.2 points

This pic is of 3 of my great uncles in Italy. They were out rabbit hunting back in the late 30's, early 40's. The dogs were hunting when they started baying very different than when they were on a rabbit. My great uncle, standing on the passenger side running board, took off running towards them and found that they had encountered a pack of wolves. By the time he got there the wolves had already killed one of the dogs. My uncle raised his side by side and took aim at the first wolf. By the time the smoke cleared and his gun jammed somehow, he had killed three wolves. When my other uncles arrived the remaining wolves had run off. Needless to say it was a day that they wouldn't forget for as long as they lived. The only remaining great uncle still alive is the gentleman standing on the driver's side running board. He's in his mid 90's now and I call him every deer season from camp to tell him that we're there and he loves to hear how we are doing and how many deer we killed. He hasn't hunted in years but he loves to hear the stories. Least I could do is call him and let him live it through us.1 point

Killed a gobbler on Day 3 of the PA season. 19#, 3/4" spurs, 8" beard. I don't care what anyone says, PA & NY mountain gobblers are the toughest birds in the US to kill, maybe the toughest in the world .1 point

After a missed opportunity on a bird that came in hot off the roost early in the morn (came in to my hard right and being that I'm a right handed shooter I couldn't swing on him before he got nervous and headed back into the timber) I headed to a diff farm to do some walking and calling along the ridges. Seen this Tom strutting in a patch of thick stuff and after repositioning myself several different times and getting the delta hen out, I called him right to the end of the barrel. Had a blast calling him through the timber and listening to his gobbles echo that sweet spring song!1 point

Had an encounter with a pheasant on the 4-lane 219 near Orchard Park. Doing 60 and the darn bird decided to fly directly across my path...bird lost the duel. fortunately for me, the pheasant hit the passenger side portion of the windshield, hitting the curved area of the glass where the most strength was. Puff...lots of feathers.1 point

My daughters packaged arrived yesterday, but she is away with her Aunt camping till tomorrow. So the package is just sitting here, waiting for her to open it. Will get pictures when she uses.Thank You again for doing a Youth Turkey Hunting Contest. After the hunt I had with my daughter, I really don't care if I get a turkey or not, I would prefer taking a kid out and watch them get a chance at a turkey.1 point

They can really mess up a vehicle! Last spring while driving back from Tennessee I saw one fly broadside into the windshield of an SUV. The damage was unreal, making the vehicle undriveable. Quite a sight to see...........1 point

I guess I was looking at the whole bird before I realized what I was doing, my mistake! They are fun with the bow. I took mine with my 100 gr muzzy fixed blade. This was a few years back. Good luck.1 point

I hunted for a few hours on thursday and seen 1 lone bird that had been spooked by some barking dogs. Heard no gobbles Same thing today and the only bird I seen was off the side of the road on my way home. Still haven't heard a damn bird. Oh well, I may just switch gears and yank the lips off some walleye this afternoon1 point

Awesome. I might have to go that route and buy a Timney myself. I filed my form through Remington over 2 weeks ago and I still haven't received the box that they want me to use to ship the rifle. This is just for the shipping box. It might take months to get this sorted out.1 point

An interesting new avenue of the fight against the NYS Safe Act. http://wivb.com/2014/05/07/south-dakota-ag-challenges-new-york-gun-ban/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A New York state ban on semi-automatic weapons sets a worrying precedent that could affect the rights of South Dakotans and people across the country to use such weapons in hunting, the South Dakota Attorney General said in a court filing. South Dakota joined 21 states in supporting a court challenge to New York’s ban on semi-automatic weapons. South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley said semi-automatic guns are among the “arms” protected by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, so the New York ban is unconstitutional. “Hunting with semi-automatic firearms for pheasant, waterfowl and big game is commonplace in South Dakota,” Jackley said in a statement. “While the ban only applies to New York at this time, the federal court’s upholding of the gun ban sets a concerning precedent interpreting limitations on Second Amendment rights of all law-abiding citizens including here in South Dakota.” A federal judge in December allowed most of New York’s new gun control law to stand, rejecting arguments that its bans on large-capacity magazines and the sale of popular semi-automatic rifles violates gun rights. Judge William Skretny in Buffalo, New York, argued that those provisions in the law are constitutional because they’re related to achieving an “important governmental interest” in public safety. The law was adopted following the shooting at a Newtown, Connecticut elementary school in late 2012. The New York affiliate of the National Rifle Association, sportsmen’s groups, firearms businesses and gun owners filed the suit. The “friend of the court” brief signed by the 22 states was filed in the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals based in New York. ___ The case is Nojay v. Cuomo.1 point

Gates are more effective with trucks/cars going down lanes than ATVs. I've repaired enough gates to know that they aren't a solution in themselves, but can help over time to keep the lazy ones out.1 point

Maybe someone can enlighten me, but where is there a ban on ALL semi-auto weapons in NYS?? I own BOTH a semi-auto rifle and shotgun, and NO one is considering them illegal. In addition, there is definitely NO ban on hunting with ALL semi-auto weapons in NYS either. This is a BS challenge made up by people who don't even have all the facts straight about the SAFE act in NYS. Sorry to tell you, but this won't go anywhere, or have any effect on changing the law in NYS.1 point

Gates dont mean much when you are on a quad. They will find a way around. Unless the gate is attached to a fence...1 point

What? Someone with the gall to investigate the king? How dare they? I only want to hear good actual results of his removal from office. This scum-bag is slipperier than snot on a door knob. But it is good to know that someone is after him.1 point

I tend to disagree. Sure, somedays they are tough to fool but most of the time ive had gobblers that are just lovesick or want to fight so much they forget their survival instincts. As long as you sit still you will rarely be spotted. A shotgun can reach a long way with a turkey choke and a heavy mag blend 3.5" shell. You cant say the same about bowhunting a mature whitetail. He may come in like a fool but deer have a wider array of tools for defense than a wild turkey.1 point

they have really botched the hunter safety part of this. My other thoughts on crossbows aside, this really bothers me. If you're going to implement them, do it right. Just require the archery course and be done with it. It wouldn't be confusing and it makes sense.1 point

Here are the pics to go with my previous post. One of the coolest days hunting in my life not only just turkey hunting. Get to our spot after the episode with the jakes this morning. After that run around (as previously posted) we go back to the house to warm up a little as it was 42 degrees and windy. Head back out at about 9:45 am and just as I finishing updating my post on here, about the morning hunt, I cut a few times with a slate call and a gobbler sounds off. A couple minutes later and after another call he cuts me off. Getting closer each time. He gets to about 25 yards and stops. Although intending to let my brother shoot first, he is at an angle where he cant see the bird. He came in strutting in the sun in a logging road and spitting and drumming. He then got a little closer and after not seeing a hen he putts once loud and that was it, I dropped him because I wasn't taking any chances. Mossberg 835 at 25 yards with 3.5 inch Longbeard #5 shot dropped in his tracks. So after the shot I walk over to my bird and he starts flopping a little so I stand on his neck. As I am doing this I see 3 jakes cross the logging road that I am standing on, about 85 plus yards away. Once they cross I hit the dirt and start calling trying to get one closer for my brother as he never shot a spring gobbler in his life. I call a few times and then maybe on the 3rd or 4th series of yelps we hear 2 gobble in the same location where my bird came from. So I lay flat in the mud on my belly behind a log because they are close and coming fast. They get to about 35 yards and my brother drops one. The 2 others left in a hurry and these weren't even the 3 jakes I saw cross the logging road earlier. Doubled up in a matter of 10 minutes or so. Great time. My bird is on the left. Weighed in right around 20 pounds, had a 8.75 inch beard and 1 1/8 in sharp spurs. My brothers was a smaller bird, not a jake had a full fan, an 8.5 inch beard and 3/4inch spurs.1 point

Comparing a Barnett to an Excal is an insult to the Excal. Kinda like comparing a Kia to a Mercedes.1 point

I agree. But if anyone has taken the bowhunter course, an online addition for crossbow certification wouldn't hurt.1 point
