I've been wanting to build a hammock stand for a while now but never found the time to do it. This afternoon my wife took my daughter out shopping and my son was on his play station and I had no work to do so I decided what the heck let's do this. "Git 'er done"! I found the plans on the Internet a while ago. I went to home depot last weekend and bought the wood and bolts thinking I could do it one evening during the week but that never happened. I went with pressure treated wood because I wanted to leave it outside. After some measuring, cutting, and screwing, 2 hours later this is the result. (Compound saw and jig saw come in handy) I plan on rounding the corners on the posts and staining the whole stand to match my Adirondack chairs but that's for another day. Here are some up close photos of the stand. M Parts list: 2- 84" 2x4 base 2- 36" 2×4 for base 2-60" 2×4 cut at 45° at one end 2 - 12"2×4 cut at 45° at one end 4- 5" × 1/2" lag bolts and nuts and washers Decking screws Tools Compound saw for miter cuts Jig saw for notches Screw gun Measuring tape Level And this is my view right now ....3 points

as long as your set up for bow is 150ft away from any building(on your property and any other property and 5oo ft away for gun your set.. unless you have permission from building s owners then the setbacks are removed and you can hunt of their roof/deck if you so choose. now recovery of said game you shoot is another matter.....2 points

you need 10 acres to shotgun hunt deer and you need to have a signed landowner endorsement to hunt it..........not 100% sure on archery, but 3 acres probably has you covered as long as there are no dwellings within the discharge zone.2 points

I tried one of the Redfield revolution scopes, and was totally dissatisfied with it out of a gun that was known for its accuracy, I replaced it with a Leupold VX 3 and immediately had my expected groups. I know the Redfields are supposed to be the same as Leopold (spelled 2 diff. ways to make sure I get it right) but that scope sure as hell wasn't worth a damn.2 points

Haha! I like to try everything when it comes to deer hunting. I have been successful using several methods and weapons. I can't pass on an opportunity to use another!2 points

Venison stew with cornbread biscuits tonight. Stew has been in the crockpot all day while I was working. Biscuits are just about ready for a late dinner. I should have picked some berries for dessert. Epic fail on my part.1 point

So Ive decided to take some pictures and start this thread to log my progress as a novice plotter.... Backround: My family owns around 22 acres in the Catskill Mountains of new York. The area used to be a big dairy farm area but most of the farmers have since been subsidized by uncle sam and the deer population is feeling the effects. So last summer I decided to start my own QDM plan... * Fortunatly my county is an Antler Restriction county so it is illegal to shoot any deer with less than 3 on one side... This is my property. The front area will not be plotted. The second field has since undergone a lot of work. Year 1: Had woods thinned out by logger with biology degree to improve habitat Planted 10 apples trees 4 dunston chestnuts and 4 crab apples Fall planted 1 acre of Antler King Clover with Chicory additive (the long green plot in second field) The area with the blue lines is where I planted the apple trees. I plan to expand the existing plot another acre so it will be, just as long but much wider (it will be on both sides of the existing cedar trees that you can see in the picture... Since this was our first year we had a farmer friend till the land... I wasn't very impressed with the results, this is how it came out after its fall planting. No lime or fertilizer was used in this year, it was planted Aug 1 and this was the result... We weren't very pleased in this year... We were just starting off, this year I came back much more determined.... Started off the year by frost seeding the plot with some more clover and chicory in early March. I decided that this year ( With the help from this site) I would expand the plot into LC's mix. I went and got my soil test it came back 5.9, so I went and got 2 tons of lime and when I started to spray it in late april, I started to notice a lot of clover.... So, I decided to take a ton of the lime I had and spread it on the existing clover plot. It was time to get a tractor.... So after much debate I ended up picking up a Allis Chalmers 5020. Since then I have obtained a chisel plow, a disk, a sprayer for the atv, a lime spreader and a mower. So then begain the plowing experiment.... I have no tractor experience so all of this has been a learning process with my two buddies. Its been very hard not to rush but the excitement is sometimes hard to overcome. Our soil is very rocky and more of a clay based soil, its drains ok. After a lot of hard work and pass after pass (and a few wheelys on the tractor) we were able to start seeing what we thought should look like a food plot! I know its early to be planting but we wanted to get a head start on turning over the soil while we had the free weekends. We plan on planting mid july because the local farmers records show the first frost coming in late September. I went up to the cabin three weeks ago to check on my cameras and mess around on the tractor and boy was I surprised at the progress of the clover! What a huge difference the past 8 months have made! Im so happy I gave it a chance to grow. I plan on mowing and fertilizing it in mid june. The soil we turned over for the new LC mix area started to take on some new weeds. You can see the plot here... the left side is the existing clover and right side is the north eastern portion of the plot where we plan on putting LC brassica mix. ( unsure of what that red patch of weeds on the left is, need to spray with cleth soon) Just recently went up again to mow , spray and fertilize (0,0, 60) Looking forward to tilling over other side next month with the fall plot (Lickcreek mix)1 point

I figure I might as well try an Xbow and purchased a Excalibur "Axiom". The biggest advantage I see is not having to draw on a deer which means a lot since I am primarily a ground hunter. I am also looking forward to using a different weapon to harvest a whitetail. I find it ironic that I also bought a recurve bow this year to learn traditional archery.1 point

How is everyone doing with them this year ? We have 2 and sometimes 1 that comes in to get chased off by the other two. They love the bee balm and feeder. Bought my wife years ago a nice hand blown glass feeder. They never used it, just the cruddy plastic one. Brother has about 6-7 all the time that get into aerial combat. Wife was stopped at a red light yesterday and spotted one buzzed around the red light itself. Neat little creatures. Can't believe how far they fly to migrate though.1 point

Went up to the camp this weekend since I had a break off from work and got some planting done. First frost for me has come in late September the past few years and I had the time with the thunderstroms coming tomorrow. Planted Lickcreek Mix. Because we do a lot of bow hunting and clover was so thick we went 50 % clover 25 % Grasses 25% brassica. We rototilled the entire new plot area. Fertilized with 46-0-0 and the 6-24-24 planted and cultipacked. We actually used a lawn roller off of amazon that you fill with water as a cultipacker and it worked great. Here is a picture of me spraying the clover with cleth and a view of the grasses plot in the back. there is a variety of 10 apple trees below where this picture ends. They are still fenced off and are starting to produce fruit Here is a shot of the brassica plot that has crab apples running throughout it. We sprayed the bases of the crab apples and fertilized accordingly. And finally here is a gun stand that we built overlooking the plots Deer are showing up more often and looking fatter than ever just need to start seeing some mass.1 point

I think it's a fair point. If you are qualified to buy a license, but only want to act as a mentor to a junior hunter who is required to be accompanied by a licensed hunter, you should be able to obtain a mentor's license without having to purchase a tag if you don't want to actually hunt.1 point

I think it would be absolutely ridiculous to put anymore money into this rifle attempting to make it a better shooter. As others have said, these Remington's have never set the world on fire with accuracy so why spend more money? At this point it would probably be cheaper just to sell this rifle as is, and then buy another used Remington semi-auto and take your chances with another one, if you really want one that bad. Not like there's a shortage of them out there to buy used at a reasonable price.1 point

cool, mine took a lot longer..planted a few trees just far enough to hang hammock, should be ready just in time for retirement1 point

A 3 MOA rifle in the hands of a decent shot and good hunter will put way MORE deer down than that expensive and fancy 1 MOA gun in the hands of someone who can only shoot from the bench and has lousy hunting skills.1 point

A bad apple year is usually a great hunting year, get your scouting in..find the few trees with apples and the deer will be there...like candy... when there are 20 acres of apples tough to find the tree the deer will come to..1 point

No turnips for me, just radish about August 5th. My seed should be here by Friday. May have some extra, if anyone interested. Have to plant the old fashion way. Lost my connection for no- till this year.1 point

Since Mute Swans according to a recent supreme court court decision which overruled an earlier decision of a law suite by the Humane Society of the United States against the FWS and the states of Pennsylvania and Maryland; the mute swan is not protected under the Migratory Bird treaty Act, therefore it is not subject to Federal wanton waste laws. Since NY's state designation (done in 1970 by the way) is "game bird" the state might impose wanton waste laws. A limited harvest of native swans is allowed in certain states and hunters certainly do eat tundra and trumpeter swans. I am sure hunters also eat mute swans as well, in the majority of states where they can be taken. I think we are playing out this "can they be eaten" thing way too much. There is a prevalent belief on this forum that geese or other waterfowl do not taste good. This is ridiculous and we have hashed this over and over. Don't hunt them, we need to move on, not reinvent the wheel every day. Your question, although relevant to hunting, obscures the fact that hunting was only ONE strategy that the DEC proposed in its mute swan management plan. The DEC was blocked from carrying out most of its plan, not just opening a hunting season. Even at this point, most people are not informed enough about what has happened and the issue at hand to discuss table qualities without a gross distraction of the issue. I am not accusing you of doing this intentionally, but this is often done intentionally. I will shoot a couple in Pennsylvania this fall and let you know what they taste like. Hopefully they will taste like goose and not like chicken or venison....1 point

I don't discount the possibility some day. I do know that the DEC is all the time changing things to increase deer take, and it seems that we may be reaching a point where hunters are not capable of taking care of the populations in some areas of the state. Who knows, with more and more land becoming locked up and inadequately harvested, the state may some day entertain such an idea in targeted areas. I doubt that I will ever see it, or even my kids, or even my grandkids. But never say never.1 point

Winchester M70 lightweight push feed in .280 Rem with a brown laminate stock. I bought it in 1988 for $289 from either Grice or Ron Shirk's...I can't remember which. A buddy of mine bought one just like it ( they are within 10 digits of the same serial #) on the same order. I worked up loads for both of them side by side..His was easy to get 1"-1 1/4" groups with..I had to struggle to get mine to group under 2".. Despite that, it has been a great rifle, and I can never remember missing a shot with it unless I screwed up, which certainly has happened a few times..<<grin>>....1 point

I just purchased the Excalibur Marix 310 two days ago. What an awesome weapon. After shooting my cousins Axiom I thought that was going to be the one i purchased but i was driving by S & S Taxidermy in springville and they have a big selection of crossbows i decided to stop and test shot the 310 and fell in love with it. Cant wait till November 1st !!!!1 point

I hate seeing garbage in the woods. I know this isn't the same scale you're talking about, and it's more a hobby of mine to scoop up junk I find in the field. About two weeks ago I started collecting spent shotgun shells just to see how many I could find. Got 54 so far,lol Keep up the the good work!1 point

Sometimes in life it is about the hunt, not the game in the bag. Maybe he'll get it shooting to his expectations, maybe not but if he does, the satisfaction will be worth the effort.1 point

I have been gettimg them for many years. I can't remember when I got my first one, but I have been getting one for a long time.. Yes, I do think that it is worth it for them. They must feel that it is a good inventment for them. I know that I more than pay for mine with how much I buy from them.. I spend many dollars with them. I buy everthing for hunting, fishing ,and clothing. I feel that Cabela's is a (5) five star store when it comes to customer service.1 point

it would probably cost you $22.00 to take your grandkids to the movies and buy popcorn and soda, so why would you even consider complaining about that dollar amount to take them hunting? spend the small amount and you won't have to worry about anything.1 point
