Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but for me, "Cabin Fever" is starting to set in pretty bad right now. I am getting mighty damn tired of this parade of snow storms every few days. So I thought it might be time to put our minds in a better time and place for at least a few minutes. Hope you all enjoy. last but not least ... My back yard. I hope these have helped a few with the winter blahs. I would like to see some other "clearly summer" pictures if anyone has some.9 points

Was involved in an accident on Tues morn around 1 am along I-81 I was riding in a car load of ppl coming back from a wedding in Ohio, we all were sleeping and right as we came up to exit 44 (right below watertown) with his cruise set at 70 the driver drifted off to sleep as well... we all woke up as we hit the median and went flying several hundred feet down the bank toward the southbound lane stopping about 15 feet from it, fortunately nobody was hurt and the car wasn't damaged thanks too the depth of the snow we just called the drivers dad who came and pulled us out an we made it the rest of the way home without further incident... So just a fresh reminder for yall if your getting sleepy either pull over an sleep a while or get someone else to drive! We made it out of there without a scratch but could have easily rolled or hit something and some or all of us been killed, Needless to say we thanked God for his protection afterwards!5 points

My wife & I took a little hike this morning to a local park. Snowshoes were the mode of travel and it was fun and great exercise. Along the way we were right next to Ellicott Creek and we saw where the local beavers were working hard. I'm always intrigued by their work. No dam that I saw, just trees that being worked on. Just another amazing animal amongst us! I grabbed a couple quick pics with my phone of some smaller trees and unfortunately didn't snap a shot of a couple HUGE trees, probably 40" in diameter. I don't know if they'll ever get through them!?!?4 points

I bet you all would really like my Buttery Nuts juice, lol I think I'm all set for a while. I've got enough e-liquid to last me a year or more now that this order has finally arrived on top of my old stock. One more new eleaf Istick 30watt on the way with all the new toppings as well. And here I thought I'd be saving more money by quitting the stinkies.2 points

Short answer.... I'll try anything once. I haven't had a really bad flavor yet. I started with tobbaccos and now I like the fruitys and desserts. Pretty crazy how accurate some of the flavors are if you know what they're supposed to be.2 points

Biz- I've never seen a place so immaculate as Aruba! I was on a cruise of the islands years ago and have to say I felt slightly (VERY) out of place. Kinda like an old dog dragging ass on a new carpet, lol Unfrotunately I wasn't much into cameras and pictures at the time, so I didn't bring much back from the trip other than the memories.2 points

Ford, We are doing bad in the courts, and SCOTUS will not hear it. You know already how it feels to be over regulated with gun control laws that do nothing. I think when the picture becomes clear to the 1-2 weekend a year hunter, its to late. They will stop single action, bolt actions, double barrels, there not going to stop with the so call AW or round count. Waiting to do nothing has got us where, oh right were we are now. Take every chance you can to fight back, and many need to remember if you own a gun your the friend of the other legal gun owner even if you don't like what gun he shoots. 2nd Amendment is very clear its the Antis that are making it unclear, so please don't sit back until it effects you it will be to late.2 points

Yea I think the 22lr is going to be the way to go. From what I'm hearing and a few pics I've seen online, the 17hmr does a lot of damage to tiny animals.1 point

I just reloaded some 40gr RNFMJ in my 5mm Remington centerfire conversion. 5.8grs Alliant 2400 2100 fps & it hits dead on @ 50 yds, 1" low @ 100 yds. Same zero setting 2450 fps W/33gr Vmax (6.8gr Alliant 2400) is 2 1/2" high @ 100 yds, zero @ 175 yds, 1 1/2" low @ 200 yds. 100 yds 200yds I plan to use the 40gr RNFMJ for Squirrels next fall. The 33gr Vmax is deadly on Groundhogs around the farm. 33gr Vmax/30gr Berger1 point

you can get the cheap luan door blanks at Home Depot for around $25.00.....not sure of what the cost of building your own is, but just another option.1 point
-
Lol... not too hard to build the door I just took a freezer/frig/or water heater box...intaced, but folded, filled with more folded boxes a bit smaller and then taped up all open sides... I used multiple layers of duct tape the whole length on one side adding to the width of each layer then roofing nails the "hing" to the frame..I bought cheap vinyl shelf liner and covered the outside and inside then again sealed with duct tape and painted them...one I didn't bother with covering the back and she's still good. Now in the new blinds I will be using some type of thin inexpensive wood like a laminate they use in bathrooms The reason for this is I just don't want to make door frames to nail the card board to in order to get a stable window opening as on the walls and I can use less expensive hinges...but that may change as I do the framing.....the reason for this is to cut windows in them. The pics shown here are 2011 for this blind and the doors are still working fine This blind is the one that has wood siding I got off job sites free...left overs from cuts.... dumpster wood...finished plywood....windows I made from J channel I bought at hardware store cheap and scratched plexy glass from job site rehab...decking was a fence someone took down...old throw away office chairs and a dumpster dive for oriental rug ...inside walls are luan over card board box insulation...very warm and sound proof.1 point

If you don't have a good .22 LR for hunting, you should have one. I consider mine a rifle for small game out to 50 yards. Beyond that I like my .22 Mag for small game out to 100 yards. The ammo is available everywhere and there are many high velocity, flat shooting cartridge options to choose from. You can sometimes also find standard velocity .22 Mag ammo at really good prices. That's the time to stock up. I've never owned a .17 HMR. When I looked into one, I compared it to a nice .223 and found the price and performance of the .223 to be a better choice. You can also reload for the .223 but not the 17 HMR. If my .22 Mag isn't enough for the game I'm after, I go with the .223. The next step up from that is usually my 7mm-08. One thing that drives me crazy about the .17 caliber rifles is finding a good cleaning kit for it. Plus, you have to have a kit just for it, or just for your .17 caliber rifles. I find the 17 HMR to be a very specialized rim fire round that, has a very specialized application. I prefer more versatility in my hunting rifles. To me, a rifle is a tool and I prefer to use what I believe is the right tool for the job. Many specialized tools are nice to have, but don't get used very often.1 point

I have the Savage 93R17 TRR-SR. Love it. Shooting 1" groups out to 100 yards. It's become a nice range gun. Would be my tool of choice if I need to rid some critters. If I plan on saving anything meat though, I'd stick with the 22LR. I hit a squirrel once with the 17HMR and it literally cut it in half. No meat left. The 22LR can also eliminate critters but you just might have to move a few yards closer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

IMO. 22LR solid out to about 75 yards then it starts to drop. 17HMR is deadly out beyond 125-150 range. 17HMR is a really fun round to shoot. That's said, it obliterates the small game, especially those VMAX rounds. I never really tried the FMJs. I would go with 22LR if you hunt hard woods where spotting a squirrel 100+ yards out is nearly impossible. If you hunt on a farm where you have large tracks of grass fields, the 17HMR would be ideal. 17HMR also provides a lot more power but not enough to reliably move you into the next class of game. What I mean by that is that 22LR would pretty much cover all small game under coyote if proper rounds and accuracy is used. But when it comes to coyote, then even the 17HMR is under gunned. Typically if it's a good workout you should feel a little tenderness. But what I've found that helps me most is being well hydrated. I add a couple table spoons of baking soda to a gallon jug of water and try to drink most or all of it before working out (over several hours). The baking soda is basic which should help keep the lactic acid build up down. And just the enormous amount of water should help purge it too. Since I typically work out before lunch, I usually try to make sure I have a banana and pineapple on the days I work out. Bananas have the potassium and pineapple contains amino acids which will help reduce the formation of lactic acid. I also eat a protein bar before working out. Good luck!1 point

I bet they did! That is nearly unheard in AK. You either need a really big track/wheel rig or one right on the river like this one and somewhere else you want it to be to go through that effort. But nothing would look cooler than to have one hanging whole in a tree, especially if you could hang a deer next to it ... haha -JR1 point

Don't throw that shank meat in the grinder, slow cook it and it's some of the best meat on your deer. This came out really nice especially on a cold winter's day. 2 front shanks bacon (cut in small strips) fresh thyme fresh rosemary pack of onion soup mix beef broth red wine soy sauce all thrown in the slow cooker for 4 hours red onion celery carrots fresh mushrooms went in for the remaining 4 hours was gonna throw in some egg noodles but it didn't need it here's what it looked like halfway through all the meat fell right off the bone and all the connective tissue became soft and delicious Finished product did something similar with a bone in neck roast but cooked the liquid down to a thick gravy, I think that was even better but it didn't last long enough to take pictures1 point

Damn Joe you dodged a bullet on that one. Glad all ended up OK, lesson learned I'm sure. In 1990 I was a passenger in a friends Ford Ranger. We were headed north on the Rt 400 expressway here in Erie County when my buddy fell asleep at the wheel. We had hunted spring gobblers that morning and our day started very early as we left his place at 3:00am and had hoofed it all morning. Although he killed his one and only gobbler that morning via my calling, it could have almost been our last day doing ANYTHING! We didn't roll it but went off to the left the left shoulder, across the culvert and JUST missed a concrete collector. My buddy then collected it AFTER he woke up and got it headed back onto the hardtop road and we slowly got back up to speed. I had been asleep for 15 minutes or so before the "event" and also woke up when we started doing the "off road thing". To this day, 25 years later, it is still almost impossible for me to fall asleep in a vehicle while a passenger. It is a horrible thing NOT being able to sleep when you need to after driving your share on a trip. I rarely get sleepy anymore as a driver and if I do, no sweat, I pull over............... Glad you guys made it out in good shape Joe. Stay safe.........1 point

amino acids help rebuild, and a good multi vitamin. A lot has to do with eating habits as well, make sure you eat something with protein 20-30 min after. As for electrolytes, mix any of the sport drinks 50/50 with water, more then that is a waste.1 point

Nice. definitely helps to have multiple guys. My dad and crazy uncles got one as a group years back and got it out whole. it was a smaller bull moose I think from Quebec. took ropes, every hand, and a truck to get it back to camp. The outfitter thought they were crazy and so did others from couple area camps.1 point

A "qdm" biologist? Ive heard of biologists working for the qdma, Ive heard of cervid biologists of varying degrees, but a qdm biologist? Never heard of one. What makes one a qdm biologist? Deer steward classes? As to the assumptions, theres alot in your reply as well. Making assumptions about buck age and so on and so forth. Im certainly NOT a biologist but i do have enough industry exposure to connect dots from time to time. Its not rocket science to see that certain options on the table will help deer management from a state, resource, and hunter perspective. OBR is one of them, especially when paired with sound practice to help, as evidenced by pretty widespread use and aforementioned results. If you think that only having one buck tag wont change some of the hunting population cultural thinking, i dont know what to say. Two buck tags is the quickest way to ensuring young bucks get shot. Nothing like waiting on the mack daddy monster pig buck with the second tag after shooting bucky jr. Im personally fine if people want to shoot a young buck. But OBR when used in conjunction with other smart regs/practices is a great way to better manage the resource...which includes those pesky non antler sporting does in much of the state where its needed.1 point

True enough but stock design and of course bullet weight can make a difference. I just got my father a Kimber Montana, .308, it weighs 5 lbs 2 oz out of the box. I put a Leupold 3.5-10 in Talleys mounts on it and I think it goes about 6 lbs 4 oz now. I was considering getting the Managed Recoil loads to sight it in and for pop's to hunt with. I couldn't find that ammo (and I was chomping at the bit to shoot it!) so opted for some blue box 150gr Federal ammo. I was very pleasantly surprised at the recoil from the bench. He'll have no problem with it and he just turned 75 in December.1 point

In my humble opinion we don't need any rule change to improve buck hunting, just more enforcement. More boots on the ground. I think poaching does way more damage than people think and the odds of getting caught are statistically zero. I'd gladly pay more for my license if it went directly to hiring more officers1 point
-
Yup and like 10% of the hunters that harvest all the deer. Some guys could have a pocket full of tags and 6 months and still not get it done. When they get pressured that long even the ones on land that can get hunted, they go underground. The others go on off limits property. Split season would be like giving us 3 or 4 "Opening Days" the deer would calm back down some and the games can continue.1 point
-
Everybody worries about how long our gun season is. From what shooting I have heard in recent years, anytime after opening weekend is only sporadically used anyway. I think there comes a time when you could add a couple weeks onto the gun season and still not impact he take significantly. I am beginning to think that most hunters completely lose interest after opening day. Even Thanksgiving day is just a shell of what it used to be. I wouldn't get too concerned about the length of NYS's gun season. I don't think it makes a bit of difference one way or the other.1 point
