I saw three big bucks at a place that I hunt the other night, including a STUD 10-pt. The following day I went out to hang a camera and found an apple tree on the edge of the field close to where the bucks were feeding that was dropping apples like crazy. It seemed like a good spot to get some pics of the big one. Just got in from checking the cam...I haven't gotten him yet, but one of his smaller buddies visited...love the mass on this guy.5 points

A store is not responsible for your inability to follow the rules. If it were, every gun store would be responsible if you decided to put more than 7 rounds in your mag or use it to commit a crime.3 points

Have to go for my yearly C T Scan of my chest tomorrow morning. It's been 3 years this past Aug of my lung cancer diagnosis and it seems like yesterday to me. And since I had chemo and surgery to remove my lung I have shown no sign of any cancer and am so thankful to the people that made it a reality for me. It may have slowed me down just a bit, but I am up and active everyday. Guess I get a little anxious thinking about the scan, but I feel good and I know things will be positive. And thanks to the members here that have given me support thru the last few years, it means a lot and helps keep my outlook positive. Can't wait till deer season!!2 points

I contacted Covert a couple weeks back because AT&T was no longer allowing me to renew my prepaid plan. Covert issued me a return authorization and offered to replace the camera with a new 2015 model for $25. I sent the camera back with a check and in less than a week of them receiving it I got the replacement. It was easy to set up with the included sim card and worked immediately at home once I bought a plan from AT&T. It seems they have worked out a lot of the little bugs with the 2014 model. I was very impressed with the solution they offered and the fast turn around time. I will be buying another Covert after this experience, I had just purchased 3 new non-Covert and non-cellular cams prior to this and wish I would have found out a little sooner. AT&T had been renewing my plan every month but it had gotten to be a struggle, and they gave me no indication they would stop renewing the prepaid plan until I tried to renew it and they would not do it. For the past 3-4 months I had to call customer service to renew the package... But the new plan goes through a different website and seems much more legitimate. Plus it's got a 3 month activation option for less than what 3 months of the old plan totalled. If anyone is having issues with their 2014 model I would recommend they contact Covert. I got the impression they are short staffed or very busy this time of year but like I said the turnaround time and overall deal was great.2 points

How did Papist not hear about that in some obscure news blog and post it all over the forum with a title having something to do with illegal aliens, socialists, terrorists and the end of the world?2 points

I'll never forget that day. I'll also never forget why I'm against appeasing those that attacked us, or making any apologies for this country to anyone who thinks we should. Nobody who died that day had anything to do with foreign grievances. If your country has a beef with the American government, you'd better take that up with them. And if you're not happy with the response, declare war and have at it. Undeclared armies of terrorists that attack civilians, and their supporters, are nothing but murderous cowards and scum, that need to be eliminated with extreme prejudice. Never forget that.2 points

People like you are the worst kind of people to have a discussion with . Im not on the side of calling the police on a neighbor for putting out a salt lick and i have never used bait for deer ever , that clearly does not jive with your statement . Im guessing you are the kind of guy that calls the cops on the neighbors for everything that makes you upset.2 points
-
Well I invited my neighbor over to shoot bows tonight and brought up the whole baiting scenario to see what he would say. He was completely against baiting with piles of corn and apples, didn't mention anything about salt licks. So, like the good person I am, I brought it up. He admitted to me that he uses salt licks solely out of season to get the deer more minerals for antler growth and for trail cam pics. Even admitted that he had one out right now, but was pulling it this weekend since they're done with antler growth. I wasn't sure what to say...so I asked him if he knew it was illegal to use them. He said, I know I can't use them during the season. I followed up with, according to NYS, you can't use them any time of year, not even to just get a few pictures. He was in awe. He was certain that he was perfectly legal by removing it before the season started. So I guess this is where the misinterpretation of the law or the he said/she said scenario comes into play. I pulled it up on my phone for him to see, he just said wow, didn't realize that. He actually got a little worried and wanted to go pull the block tonight. So if I were the type of guy that just acted on a situation before knowing the facts, I would have gotten him in a heap of trouble. He genuinely seemed disturbed about the whole situation and asked me if I wouldn't say anything to anyone...too late, haha. After talking with him and finding out his situation, I am glad I was able to approach it in such a manner that didn't point fingers at him. He did show me pictures (with salt block clearly in photos), but only had a few small bucks and mostly does on his cameras. Let's just say that made me happy.2 points

I think many fathers already allow their children to hunt at younger ages already. I would 100% support this.2 points

depends on what the gun likes.. my mini 30 and no 1 in .270 prefer particular hand loads. my 44 carbine will shoot anything well. my Nagant likes 203 gr. silver bear and my jc Higgins 20 ga groups winchester the best. the only way to know is to shoot, shoot and shoot. this does 2 things, you find out what the gun likes and you get comfortable with the gun which is possibly the biggest key to success. Doc for one, NYAntler for another,NYSportsman and so on. They keep saying NY is different, yet at best all they can offer up are anecdotal statements like regions or terrain...or the hunters themselves...or population issues....as if other states don't have the same exact freaking thing to face and overcome. Oh, you have southern and northern zones? Oh, are you talking about MO or NY? Oh, you have various topography? OH? NY? KY? IA? KS? Oh the hunters are fickle...NY? OH? IA? MI? WI? Give me a break. You are falling into Doc's magic bullet façade. Keep context - we're not unique, potential solutions are out there, we likely have issues that are being better addressed by other peer accepted plans, the agency is on a dictatorship path, and some of our hunters don't care, or try to be a stick in the mud.1 point

My 11 year old grandson has been going out with me since he was 6. He learns quickly and has a passion for hunting and the outdoors. His skills, although he still has much to learn, are very advanced for his age. He is now a better woodsman at 11 than some adults I've seen stumbling and bumbling in the woods. He knows how to safely handle a firearm and is a good shot with bow as well. Perhaps some kids his age are not ready to hunt. But he could have started last year if legal. And I know some others his age that are ready to hunt, and chomping at the bit to do so as well. It's all about good supervision and and letting them learn as much as they want, at an early age. Why hold them back?1 point

We are starting to think about what to plant in our garden in 2 months when the season is finally right. Down here in S. FL our growing season generally starts in early November. We are thinking a bed of beets for pickling and a bed of cabbage for kraut, plus the usual hot peppers and tomatoes.1 point

You said... "There are a lot of dumb people out in the woods and some of them shouldn't have kids let alone kids that hunt ." That is what my response was about. In any case, generalizing if a kid is ready to hunt at a certain age is a very broad brush approach. Ill tell you right now that my daughter has been ready for at least the last 2 years. Other kids her age may or may not be, but she is, and NY cant make that call. I can though, because I know her and I know her capabilities. As a parent of 2 kids that are becoming active in school, sports, etc, I know all about what kind of distractions are out there for kids entering the NY mandated hunting age range. Its not going to be an easy feat keeping them in the woods. I cant imagine how hard it would be to get a kid that hasnt been introduced to it at a very young age, started at the age of 12. You wonder why the average age of hunters keeps going up in NY? Well, making people wait till their kids are already eyeballs deep in school and sports is one of the reasons.1 point

Very easy. It came with a shooting rail that Im not going to install. Looks like it will just be in the way. Looks well made and sturdy. Gonna set it in the next week or so.1 point

That's what I'm thinking. The best I could do would be to check traps twice daily, say morning and late evening. It's pretty rural and I know most of the local dogs/owners. Hunters all. So I'll put the word out, they want the coyotes gone as well.1 point

It is true that just about any plan you can devise can be cheated. That is why it is important to get serious (not contrived) hunter buy-in. And yes, you will still get the cheaters. And you will have to work to foil as many of those cheaters as possible just like they have to do with any conservation law in existence. But if you can get the majority of hunters in synch with what you are trying to do, the cheating problem gets a little less. Not only do you get more conformance, but you get more willing eyes out there to aid in bringing down cheaters. However, I do agree that a lot of ideas sound great until you start to examine the details. Those "details" are good to bring up and talk about.1 point

absolutely. I know kids that are more aware and responsible than some adults. I'm all for it.1 point

I don't know how many times I've shut off a chainsaw or log splitter and looked up to see a group of curious deer watching me. Even if the development radically changes a key part of their habitat, they'll quickly work around it.1 point

Just curious how many have seen fawns that still have their spots durring bow season. I got a trail cam pic of one once since we went to the Oct 1'st opener but have never seen one durring season other than that. I did snap this pic two days ago, and was thinking the little one might retain a few spots into early archery season.1 point
