  1. Hard to believe it's been 14 years. Never forget.

  2. I saw three big bucks at a place that I hunt the other night, including a STUD 10-pt. The following day I went out to hang a camera and found an apple tree on the edge of the field close to where the bucks were feeding that was dropping apples like crazy. It seemed like a good spot to get some pics of the big one. Just got in from checking the cam...I haven't gotten him yet, but one of his smaller buddies visited...love the mass on this guy.

  6. A store is not responsible for your inability to follow the rules. If it were, every gun store would be responsible if you decided to put more than 7 rounds in your mag or use it to commit a crime.

  7. Have to go for my yearly C T Scan of my chest tomorrow morning. It's been 3 years this past Aug of my lung cancer diagnosis and it seems like yesterday to me. And since I had chemo and surgery to remove my lung I have shown no sign of any cancer and am so thankful to the people that made it a reality for me. It may have slowed me down just a bit, but I am up and active everyday. Guess I get a little anxious thinking about the scan, but I feel good and I know things will be positive. And thanks to the members here that have given me support thru the last few years, it means a lot and helps keep my outlook positive. Can't wait till deer season!!

  8. I contacted Covert a couple weeks back because AT&T was no longer allowing me to renew my prepaid plan. Covert issued me a return authorization and offered to replace the camera with a new 2015 model for $25. I sent the camera back with a check and in less than a week of them receiving it I got the replacement. It was easy to set up with the included sim card and worked immediately at home once I bought a plan from AT&T. It seems they have worked out a lot of the little bugs with the 2014 model. I was very impressed with the solution they offered and the fast turn around time. I will be buying another Covert after this experience, I had just purchased 3 new non-Covert and non-cellular cams prior to this and wish I would have found out a little sooner. AT&T had been renewing my plan every month but it had gotten to be a struggle, and they gave me no indication they would stop renewing the prepaid plan until I tried to renew it and they would not do it. For the past 3-4 months I had to call customer service to renew the package... But the new plan goes through a different website and seems much more legitimate. Plus it's got a 3 month activation option for less than what 3 months of the old plan totalled. If anyone is having issues with their 2014 model I would recommend they contact Covert. I got the impression they are short staffed or very busy this time of year but like I said the turnaround time and overall deal was great.

  9. How did Papist not hear about that in some obscure news blog and post it all over the forum with a title having something to do with illegal aliens, socialists, terrorists and the end of the world?

  11. I'll never forget that day. I'll also never forget why I'm against appeasing those that attacked us, or making any apologies for this country to anyone who thinks we should. Nobody who died that day had anything to do with foreign grievances. If your country has a beef with the American government, you'd better take that up with them. And if you're not happy with the response, declare war and have at it. Undeclared armies of terrorists that attack civilians, and their supporters, are nothing but murderous cowards and scum, that need to be eliminated with extreme prejudice. Never forget that.

  17. People like you are the worst kind of people to have a discussion with . Im not on the side of calling the police on a neighbor for putting out a salt lick and i have never used bait for deer ever , that clearly does not jive with your statement . Im guessing you are the kind of guy that calls the cops on the neighbors for everything that makes you upset.

  18. Well I invited my neighbor over to shoot bows tonight and brought up the whole baiting scenario to see what he would say. He was completely against baiting with piles of corn and apples, didn't mention anything about salt licks. So, like the good person I am, I brought it up. He admitted to me that he uses salt licks solely out of season to get the deer more minerals for antler growth and for trail cam pics. Even admitted that he had one out right now, but was pulling it this weekend since they're done with antler growth. I wasn't sure what to say...so I asked him if he knew it was illegal to use them. He said, I know I can't use them during the season. I followed up with, according to NYS, you can't use them any time of year, not even to just get a few pictures. He was in awe. He was certain that he was perfectly legal by removing it before the season started. So I guess this is where the misinterpretation of the law or the he said/she said scenario comes into play. I pulled it up on my phone for him to see, he just said wow, didn't realize that. He actually got a little worried and wanted to go pull the block tonight. So if I were the type of guy that just acted on a situation before knowing the facts, I would have gotten him in a heap of trouble. He genuinely seemed disturbed about the whole situation and asked me if I wouldn't say anything to anyone...too late, haha. After talking with him and finding out his situation, I am glad I was able to approach it in such a manner that didn't point fingers at him. He did show me pictures (with salt block clearly in photos), but only had a few small bucks and mostly does on his cameras. Let's just say that made me happy.

  19. I think many fathers already allow their children to hunt at younger ages already. I would 100% support this.

  24. My 11 year old grandson has been going out with me since he was 6. He learns quickly and has a passion for hunting and the outdoors. His skills, although he still has much to learn, are very advanced for his age. He is now a better woodsman at 11 than some adults I've seen stumbling and bumbling in the woods. He knows how to safely handle a firearm and is a good shot with bow as well. Perhaps some kids his age are not ready to hunt. But he could have started last year if legal. And I know some others his age that are ready to hunt, and chomping at the bit to do so as well. It's all about good supervision and and letting them learn as much as they want, at an early age. Why hold them back?

  25. Typically, from what I have found, the deer dont eat the hog radish tubers, just the greens. Thats crazy that they didnt touch the greens though, those are the first things that get hammered on our plots.

  27. You said... "There are a lot of dumb people out in the woods and some of them shouldn't have kids let alone kids that hunt ." That is what my response was about. In any case, generalizing if a kid is ready to hunt at a certain age is a very broad brush approach. Ill tell you right now that my daughter has been ready for at least the last 2 years. Other kids her age may or may not be, but she is, and NY cant make that call. I can though, because I know her and I know her capabilities. As a parent of 2 kids that are becoming active in school, sports, etc, I know all about what kind of distractions are out there for kids entering the NY mandated hunting age range. Its not going to be an easy feat keeping them in the woods. I cant imagine how hard it would be to get a kid that hasnt been introduced to it at a very young age, started at the age of 12. You wonder why the average age of hunters keeps going up in NY? Well, making people wait till their kids are already eyeballs deep in school and sports is one of the reasons.

  31. When stoneam2006 mentioned dogless, he was referring to a type of trap; it has nothing to do with K9 proofing. I set pan tension by feel, but 2lbs is a good starting point. Trap bed antifreeze can come in many forms from table salt, calcium chloride, propylene glycol, waxed dirt, vermiculite, peat moss, etc. I've even heard of folks using antifreeze that you put in RV's and vacant homes to keep water lines from freezing. What type of cover/terrain will you be trapping?

  32. Why of course you have!...we all know how many times you've mentioned breaking this game law or that because you know what's best concerning your place. What would make anyone think you would obey any other laws....

  36. I've yet to get an understanding of why NY is an enigma compared to other states. We have the same problems and same obstacles as other states. Some are hackled by law/dept. organization, some have high hunter density, some have access issues, some have population issues, and so on and so forth. I've yet to hear, even after much drum beating, that there is one thing that makes NY different that no other state has encountered. This hunter density thing is a joke, too. NYS ranks third overall - crazy right? Until you realize the fourth and fifth spots are held by WI and OH with similar numbers and they're not exactly struggling to manage fundamentals. Oh, but you say NYers are fickle? Ever meet a toothless wonder, pill popping hunter from Scioto Co. Ohio? That "fickle" NYer pales in comparison pretty quickly when it comes to buy-in, engagement, and "doing their part." There are plenty of states with other big cities that have a hunting populous. Kansas City, St. Loius, Detroit, Cleveland/Cinci/Columbus, Pitt...the names go on and on. Is NYC big? Yes, but their hunter ranks pale compared to those in wNY, too. I just don't see much of anything NY faces as being something unique that hasn't been experienced or is being experienced by other states and other states' hunters.

  37. 2013 Buck was hit slightly forward, Muzzy MX-3 blew through humerus. Clipped both lungs, and broke off immediatly. Deer made it about 80 yards. If you look at a diagram of a deer skeleton, you dont need to be off by much to hit this bone, which is much stonger than the shoulder blade. I agree that the key is a good shot, and sharp broadheads, but Id be curious how other (expandable) broadheads would perform with the same point of impact.

  39. I don't know how many times I've shut off a chainsaw or log splitter and looked up to see a group of curious deer watching me. Even if the development radically changes a key part of their habitat, they'll quickly work around it.

  42. Just a friendly suggestion: I would not post pics of this deer until he's dead on the ground. One person sees the pic-sends it to his buddy-who then sends it to his buddy-that guy spreads it around-someone recognizes the fence in the pic-gut pile on the neighbors lawn-deer shows up in the taxidermy shop-you are wondering wtf. I'ts happened around here before-it will happen again.Doesn't matter if it is living in Mrs. Snufallufagus's backyard. If someone wants it-it will disappear.I have seen it first hand. Delete the pics

  47. good additions. I always take out the tenderloins carefully as to not rip them and right away to not let them dry out. also I always leave the hide on when hanging so the meat doesn't dry. when in meat pans at home in a fridge or at the farm in an upright cooler there's saran wrap over them. letting it age is more out of habit being raised for me. I think it helps a little but venison doesn't age like beef does. a week just under 40 degrees is more than enough and any longer won't do much. getting all the connective tissue, fat, and silver skin off it will do much more.
