I've been deer hunting for 6 years and this is my first deer. I never gave up and finally accomplished a long time goal..I've been hooked but now it's an addiction24 points

My good buddy shot a whopper of a buck this evening around 6:00pm in WMU 8F. Within seconds of releasing the arrow he was calling me as he thought he heard the buck crash down and that he needed help tracking. I told him I would get there as quickly as possible as I was just picking up my kids and heading home. From the time he called till the time I arrived there an hour had passed. We waited for another friend to show up and began our track. By this time it had been a good 1 1/2 hrs from when he shot. He had already located his arrow once he climbed down from his stand as he had a pass through and the arrow was full of blood. We began tracking as the blood at first seemed spotty but then began to pick up with good signs of blood. The blood was bright red and had some bubbles in it usually meaning lung shot. The blood trail was strong and consistant and continued on for a couple hundred yards. It stopped and came to a split in a deer trail. I went one way and my buddy went the other way. I shined my flash light ahead as what I had thought was his deer when I saw the antlers I began to realize it was a skull of a buck. A dandy indeed. A very symmetrical 10. A bonus for me for my efforts I suppose. We continued to look for his deer but had no such luck. We know we never bumped him. We decided to back out and call deer search. The deer he shot was bigger and taller then this rack and another 10. We are hoping for luck tomorrow with deer search and their dogs. He feels the shot may have been a little forward of the shoulder but angling down as he shot down from a treestand 30yds away. Will keep you all posted.9 points

Sorry you had that scare and glad it worked out Note...Some of these remarks...just plain ignorant and uncalled for bigotry....punks are punks know matter what their race or where they happen to encounter you...it could have been white youth gaurding a methlab on state land...I doubt I would have seen the racial slurs I saw here had they been Italian ,Irish ,english ectect...grow up9 points

Geeze, I didnt expect grow to be the one to call these guys out for racist remarks. Shes 100% right. The vast majority of Native Americans are good people. There are bad apples in every bunch. Some of you guys might as well be saying Jewish people deserved the holocaust, Sorry you had that experience deerpassion, and Im glad you are safe. This thread is locked though, thanks to people that cant seem to act like civilized adults.6 points

No, not really. There is no need to create any questions about whether the arrow was stuck in the deer by hand after it was shot with the gun. Right now there is no legal way that a deer taken in bow season can have an accompanying bullet hole in it. Let's keep it that way.5 points

You want a chambering that is as versatile as the 30-06, but in a short action and compatible with a 20 inch barrel ?? You just described the .308 Win...5 points

I wouldn't think they will let you hang a deer if you are not using they're service5 points

It's been a bit warm and windy to deer hunt so I've been chasing turkeys for the past couple of days. I had a fun hunt with my wife last night. We were actually after some gobblers that I've been watching when a flock of hens/poults showed up. I got the old boss hen fired up and she came on in while the others stayed just up over the knoll in the cornfield. At first we were gonna pass hoping the rest would come in, but they started working further away...so, the old adage of bird in hand played out. Erin made a great left handed shot to end the hunt. I went after some more birds this morning and had a bunch roosted across the gulley from me and even had one gobble twice. I ended up getting around them and called two hens in...one of which strutted and drummed like a gobbler for 45 minutes at 20 yds!!! It was a cool hunt even though I elected to pass on her.4 points

Simply put let your morals and ethics take over. Sometimes braking the law is the right thing to do.4 points

I get the impression that those of us that don't hunt moose or elk regularly always opt for a bigger caliber. 30-06 should do just fine and still be a good deer caliber. Plus, easy to find ammo.4 points

Its pretty simple. If you dont want the low end rifle, then buy the higher end one. Just because the $300 783 is not a top notch rifle, doesnt mean my 700 isnt.4 points

After a run in with poachers years ago while I had a bow and 2 of them with rifles I no longer enter the woods without a sidearm! As we said in the service "better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6"4 points

Gotta love when a set goes exactly as planned right down to the point where you know where to keep your gun pointed.3 points

$30 bucks to hang a deer in a proper cooler for a week?.....that's a bargain in my book, I'd pay that in a heartbeat.3 points

I believe those that volunteer for Deer Search can finish one off with a gun.3 points

.243 for elk?? That would be an extremely poor choice in my opinion even with the hottest of handloads. If you ever showed up on a guided hunt with that round you would likely be sent home3 points
-
if offered a quartering to shot on a large bull at 250-300 yards, a 243 in my hands would make me really question whether to pull the trigger. Actually it wouldn't make me question, because I wouldn't.3 points

if you already own a 30-06 I'm not sure I'd spend any money on a rifle. Certainly not a .308. Just my .02.3 points

I would have some "friends" with me if I went back. Be careful, no deer or any hunting spot is worth risking your life or having a damaged vehicle for it.3 points

Guess they didn't know that the SAFE act made their AK illegal in NY when they stepped off the reservation. You should have insisted the trooper lock them up on the spot.3 points

Remington is just "keeping up with the Joneses" so to speek. If they didn't offer a cheaper alternative their profits would fall horribly because the market is flooded with the cheaper savage axis and Ruger american3 points

I see nothing wrong with gun makers, putting affordable, accurate rifles in the hands of the average hunter. No matter who makes them. It's a win-win for guys like myself!3 points

I call my gun shop and tell him what I need "guns or ammo" if it can be got he has it for me in 3 business days. I drive by a dicks and 2 walmarts to buy from him. If that costs me 5 dollars extra a box oh well!2 points
-
yup have to just set down and watch them suffer! Or take the risk of getting hurt trying slit it's throat. this is one of the many cases where the law makes an honest person an outlaw or a "poacher"2 points

How has this became an acceptable way of thinking why do we as a society see it fit to restrict others because of what some may do? Do you not let your kids play outside because they may get dirty or do you let your kids go outside and tell them not to get dirty. This train of thought is very sad to me!2 points

I always assumed that if you could get close enough to a wounded deer to put a bullet between its eyes... it should die soon on its own. If you cant get that close... put another arrow in it.2 points

for $30 i'd just have them cut it up. I'd never pay that personally. I'd rather quarter them and put them on ice till i got home and could cut them up. a few bucks for ice and 30 minutes to skin and quarter? all day.2 points

I myself an in awe of you hunters that can go out day after day and wait for that perfect shot with a bow or cross-bow, weather you fill a tag or not, the dedication/hours you put in just to wait for a deer to get within 40 yards or closer is amazing to me. I have never hunted with a bow, strictly Shot-gun for me, but who knows, I am a young 50yr old, got plenty of time left to expand my horizons and learn a new weapon,,,,,,,,2 points

If you are interested in going through life as "marginal" then have at it. It is NOT the best choice for a caliber for the animals mentioned.2 points

I love this OCTOBER lull stuff 3 years ago we just started hunting and there wasn't an Oct lull. No suddenly there is!2 points

300 short mag is also another great option and they shoot very well out of short barrels! If your looking for the 20" tube I would highly recommend a 300wsm!2 points

That's pretty much it. You can't expect a Mercedes for the price of a Kia. I think the cheap guns will kill a deer as dead as it needs to be, but you will not be getting it done with a gun that will win prizes for beauty. If you want something more fancy and smooth, you got to cough up some more money, period.2 points

1st thing you need to do is report it to NYSdec get a name and date write it down. 2nd is the State needs to survey that boarder before something serious happens, and tell them so. You know this is the reason Safe Act is only works on legal citizens. As much as I hate everything about the BS Law, call the NYS Police. Let them know what you saw and tell them Andy would not like it. I would go back and hunt for sure, if you don't they ran you off a legal stand. Tell the State police and DEC you want patrols there until its fixed. Press chargers on the two for Threats and get them ticketed for harassing a Hunter. sound like your 100% right and the police did not do a thing but leave danger for another.2 points

I usually start with the list of ECO's for the area I will be in. The phone numbers, usually their home#, is in the back of the guide and I look for the ones with the closest phone number prefix. I start with them because they are the ones patrolling the area and the ones who know and I'll be running into. Sometimes it's their cell number listed, but mostly it's their home number. So I call in advance and don't expect an immediate response. I've never not had one call me back.2 points

You should call the officer that you will have too deal with, Thats what i normally do2 points

No, but it did the minute they stepped off the reservation.2 points

I spent a lot of time hunting swamps in my more adventurous youth, often with a canoe and always with a complete change of clothing and basic survival gear sealed in a dry-bag. Not so much any more. It's dangerous and a lot of work. One thing you might do is find the entry/exit routes and wait for a thin skin of ice. They're good swimmers, but the deer won't use the swamp when they have to go through shin-barking ice to do it. They'll go around and pick up their usual trail on the other side. Even if they head into the swamp after the shot the tracking is pretty easy. Just follow the holes in the ice. You'll probably still want the dry change of clothing after the retrieval though.2 points

The swamp I hunt is a bedding ground morning or night could produce but most action I see is at night coming around one side or other to feeding area Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk2 points

Just walk about 50 yards into the woods off the road and put scrapes down everywhere parallel to the road ,everyone will think they have the hot spot and conveniently located just off the road ,meanwhile you are deep in the woods by yourself.2 points
