  1. 3rd deer for the freezer. 11-12 came flying out of the dark pines down in front of me. Tails were down and hauling azz. They ran right under my stand. Don't even know if there was a buck or bucks in the mix. Picked out biggest body and bleated verbally , they locked up and shot her from 10 yards. It ain't easy picking something up in a scope that fast. Good thing I was only on 3x and not 9. Took out top of heart and I believe both lungs. 2 hours later of dragging I had her to my car. This was at 1:30. Still one either sex tag left for Monday and or Tuesday. Come on snow in 9H

  3. I'm not saying poaching isn't an issue, but it seems so many guys instantly blame their neighbor for their lack of success. I hear it from EVERY hunter. "If my neighbor stopped shooting doe" "my neighbor is brown it's down" "they shoot spike horns" "they drive the hell out of the property" "he invites his whole family to hunt that small plot" "I think I found a footprint on my posted land" "my neighbor walks their dog/rides quads/target shoots during bow season" "i know he uses his wife's tag" The list goes on. At some point, you do your best to control what you can and go out and just enjoy the woods

  4. No doubt on this one and certainly not the same one from a few weeks ago. This is a studly looking beast, IMO. The first one looks smaller and has a (at least it appears to be) longer tail and looks to be younger or maybe a female?? (totally guesses on my part and uneducated at that!) Enjoy........ BOBCAT!!.AVI

  6. People around us will use all there tags and anyone elses tags, legal or not.. they do not care, wrong tag per season, wmu you name it. But it has a tag on it. (for everything) Start holding people accountable for their actions, and punish per crime committed, people may start to think twice..

  7. The difference is you are showing evidence of using violence in an unwarranted manor. Plus, when applying for a pistol permit, you are agreeing that your permit will be revoked for being convicted of such things. BTW, If you call punching your wife a lapse of judgement, I dont even know what to say.

  8. The last chainsaw I bought new was set at the factory to run so lean that it wouldn't have lasted me a month! EPA regulations for emissions... too much exhaust or something...? I fixed that problem before I even fired it up. It's been 6 or 7 years now, and that saw is still getting better. I bought a new log splitter 4 years ago that was set up the same way. It was built to die, but I fixed that carburetor too. The air pollution caused by all the chainsaws and splitters I've owned in my lifetime wouldn't come close to that of a single city bus just getting warmed up at the start of the day.

  10. LOL... lots of "you can't eat horns" hunters... until they finally shoot one with horns... then it's posting photos "til the cows come home. There was a guy here on the forum (no names) that claimed not to post pics of any deer he gets... until he killed a nice buck this year.. first thing he did that day was post it.. LOL

  12. The guy who said NY is the worst state to hunt deer is the guy who doesn’t like the cold. North American whitetail ranks NY 22nd out of 50 for deer hunting. Take a look at the NYBC book and that’s just the deer put into the book. To the guys who go to Iowa and Ohio and places like that. It’s not the state that makes the deer hunting the way it is there, it’s how the properties are manage by the owners or leases. I hate to do this but look at Lee and Tiffany when you lockup a couple of thousand acres and only let a few people hunt it look at what you can do. If I read the Iowa regs. right a land owner in some places can kill up to 3 bucks. So there goes the 1 buck rule.

  15. I have fun hunting during the day, but night hunts are what I really like to do. Just something about a pair of glowing eyes bounding toward you in the dark while the sound of a dying animal plays on an e-caller that gets the blood pumping!

  16. So you forget to check a box on a tag and you lose your license for life? Really? We set rapists and murders free after a few years on good behavior, and you want to hand out a lifetime punishment for tagging a deer wrong? I think the fines are pretty low right now, but increases need to be kept relative to the crimes. Get caught jacking deer the first time? Suspension for x years. Get caught twice? Lifetime loss. Illegally using another persons tag? Suspension the first time, then longer the second, lifetime loss after the third. Maybe start fining the people that are allowing others to use their tags as well as fining the person using it? That might make people think twice about allowing others to use their tags. The options are endless really, but ust going for an extremely harsh penalty right out of the gate for most things, makes about as much sense as no penalties at all.

  21. Nice to hear things are progressing . Been in a couple hundred fires, saw a lot of death made a couple saves . But we leave go back to the firehouse clean tools take a shower and go to bed and wait for the next one, while folks like yourself are left to try to move forward . Something I need to focus more on. Kind of makes this whole " bad deer season" seem silly doesn't it ........ Keep, the faith brother !

I've emptied my share of Genny cans over the last 50 years...For quite a few years now, they have been mostly Genny Light. However, in the last few months I have found myself buying Labatt's Blue Light more often. Must be the onset of dementia... Now what was I talking about ?

  27. You want to make it so the deer can get into and around the hinge cut trees , cut them at least 5 ' off of the ground so the deer can walk under them also. An area with pines and hemlock will be good, they were hitting them hard by me last winter , they like to bed under them also.Any over grown apple trees can be cut back and thinned out in Jan. to March with out hurting them if you want to let some more light in. I was trying to post the Above vid.'s but could not they are good.

  29. They have a small book of excuses that they keep for years when the harvest is down. They will just fish around in there and find one that they believe everyone will swallow .... lol. Sorry, I guess I'm just getting old and cynical, but I have seen a lot of these "stories".

  30. Well, the dispute is not over the cape. It is the antlers that the hunter #2 took home. If the original hunter wants the cape, it is probably still there rotting away.....lol. But of course, even that would not be available if it were not for the fact that hunter #2 actually found it. The thing for hunter #1 to do is to be satisfied that he even found out the fate of the deer that he shot and lost and let the antler collector add his find to his collection without harassment.

  31. I'm a big P.O Ackley fan. Have several Ackley chamberings. In the .35 Whelen case though, the shoulder is almost non existent to begin with so the acklely shoulder wouldn't be much benefit except for a little less case stretch and not having to trim as much. You also wouldn't benefit much in velocity with the extra case capacity of the ackley because of the shorter barrel.

  32. In the last week I have purchased a Johnny Stewart E-Caller, a Lil' Critter motion decoy and a couple of flex tone mouth calls, that I'm learning to use. Until we get a bit of experience, we will start out on daylight hunts. Early and late in the day. Then we will start the night hunts. I'll look into the Cyclops Sirius light since you recommend it. Thanks! Did some trapping as a youngster, not many yote's around back then. Could be another way to teach an old dog new tricks!

  33. I use mouth calls and have an E-Caller. Used FoxPros and Flextone Echos. For a decoy I have a Mojo critter. I have used turkey calls and had them come in as well. If youre going to call at night, youll need a decent light. I use a Cyclops Sirius rechargable led light. It works pretty well. Just a word of advice though, if you really have a problem with yotes and want to knock the numbers down, youll need to trap them.

  34. So...no more guesses on this one then? This one is a 4 1/2. Its the buck I called Hooks, and he was killed opening day of gun this year. I have pics of him as a 2 1/2 from 2 years ago. He has a very distinct curved brow tine on the left side that has been there since he was 2. When I first checked and saw the first 2 pics, I thought it was a young deer too, until I really started looking at him. Ive had a few guys pick him off at 4 from the pics, but most say 2 or 3. I even had one guy see the first two pics and say "eh, not bad" then saw the third and go gaga over it.

  36. Is there really anything more exciting than standing on the ground, eyeball to eyeball with a deer (any deer), knowing that the slightest screw-up will lose the opportunity for you? I have had deer so close on the ground that I could have reached out and touch them. Now that is some exciting stuff that will get that old heart racing ..... lol. And then there is the fact that you have to get the bow up, drawn and sighted all of this without him seeing you or any o that movement .... right there on his level. Man it doesn't get much more intense than that. And that all sums up the very reason I am out there with the stupid bow. There are no guarantees right up to the point where you roll him over to star the gutting. "Intense" .... Yeah, that's the right word.

  37. We had a seasonal routine in the mid-70's: Schlitz in the winter because a friend of ours worked for the local distributor after construction season, and Rolling Rock during the summer because the general store in Port Gibson had returnable long-necks for about 3 1/2 bucks a case. Genny was reserved for spring smelting trips with the dads, and for other special occasions.

  39. You all really do have my gratitude. Update for those who are interested: We may have secured a sub-leased apartment for a couple months, so we hopefully can get out of this hotel. We met with the adjusters and the advocates today, and it looks like our house is definitely out of commission for at least 6 months. Most items inside are able to be cleaned with the exception of anything fabric (beds, couches, carpet...etc). Insurance looks like it is covering everything house-wise, which is fantastic. Still working with Geico regarding the boat, car and truck. Definitely going to take big hits on those, but we'll manage. Ins. gave us an advance on living expenses today, so that covered most of our lost work and some of the food/cost of living expenses. We are keeping positive attitudes, and making the best of things. I give some credit for our mental well being to people like you guys. Your comments and support really do mean a lot to us. So, for me and my wife, Thank You. Joshua

  40. direction matters in some cases and in some areas you don't want to make it thick at all. I've tried to pull some videos without typing a book. I still have more a lot more to learn. in some cases if you've got the space it helps to leave wide open patches of timber especially near that gully for access in and out clean or to simply get deer to travel from one defined spot to the other and not decide somewhere in between is good enough and camp out to watch for you coming or going. also if you drop a path of those poplar in a particular direction in open timber deer will use it as a travel corridor. even though it's cover nicer prime bedding setups are not far away so they'll just use it as travel cover. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAEu6RQQEbE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zS3AyWkZvMw

  41. Ok, I cannot comment on all of this until all 157 pages are read. I'll be back. Scanning the material, it looks like an all-out war on deer is being launched in NYS. The effort to eliminate deer in NYS is now not only the agenda of the DEC, but also the USDA and the Department of fish and wildlife along with all of the interests of the Citizen Task Forces. This ain't a good time to be a whitetail .... lol.

  43. Nailed it. This everyone gets a trophy, don't hurt any feelings mentality our country is taken is making for a scary future. If one wants to go hunt else where, each is own. When I put in the time and all that time produces a nice harvest, I'm plenty happy to continue hunting this "awful" state of NY.

  44. If NY was such a good whitetail state, there would be at least 1 very successful outfitter in the state. I don't know of any outfitters in NY who are having clients shoot big bucks year in and year out like many other states in the Midwest and even down south. Separately, does anyone have access to pope and young or b & c record books? I don't, but would be curious to see how NY stacks up against other states as far as entries each year. 45. It seems to me that once the animal has been reduced to non-edible carrion, it is no longer a "harvest", but simply a search of antlers. The only salvageable part of the find is the antlers, so the shooter is no longer looking for a deer. ....just the antlers. At that point the antlers become the same as sheds and whoever finds them gets the ownership.

  46. Raccoons have a similar bone, and many years ago when I was a young buck, I gave one to my girlfriend's college roommate and told her it was a turkey call. I can still see her blowing on it and wondering why it didn't make any noise. She left school shortly after that and entered a convent. TRUE STORY, except for the third sentence...<<grin>>...

If you could PM me, I have some extra things I would be happy to share with you, to start rebuilding your hunting and fishing items. Just a little something from one outdoorsman to another.
