  1. From newsletter sent out by NY Crosbow Coalition: Senator Patrick Gallivan has introduced Bill # S7005 which classifies a crossbow. Please Call and Write your Senator asking they support S7005 What is in S7005 Classifies Crossbows as a bow, requiring the Bow Privilege instead of the Muzzleloader Privilege Eliminates the 200 lb maximum draw weight restriction Eliminates the 17' minimum width restriction Aligns the minimum age for crossbow use with other archery equipment. Allows 12 & 13 year old's to hunt big and small game with a crossbow Permits crossbows at the same 150' setback as all other bows Permits Bowfishing with crossbows Allows anyone wishing to, to use a Draw Lock Device without need for a permit Removes the restriction on minors and their mentors using a crossbow to hunt from the ground Allows Crossbows to be used during the entire archery season in all archery areas except for Suffolk and Westchester Counties and the Archery only areas of Albany and Monroe Counties. The bill does not address the exclusion of crossbows on Long Island or Westchester or the archery only areas of Albany and Monroe Counties. To our members in these areas, we still believe those areas should be included and we will continue to pursue that, but we can not do it alone. We need everyone to contact your legislators and request your county be included in this bill.

  2. Sucks they leave any out..Must be a city thing. Either way its a big start and should fly thru without any friction. There is no reason for the Crossbow to be ruled for what it is... Full use in all seasons if thats the sportsmen's wishes!

  3. They probably left those areas out because they are/were "archery only" areas for the regular seasons. Seems contradictory to reclassify the crossbow as a bow for the regular bow season but not consider it a bow for the existing archery only areas. Weird.

  7. Once again this year I will be running the youth spring turkey hunt contest, with the help of Paula and Wooly as judges. If any of the members take a youth out and they are successful please take the time to participate in the contest. Lets grow this contest and get the youngsters involved!! This thread will serve as the official rules and entry thread for the youth hunt. This year there will be three judges... Wooly, Paula and myself. We will judge the contestants based on the following rules... 1. The youth hunter or mentor must submit a picture of the youth or of the two of them with their harvest. 2. A brief story of the hunt, preferably written by the youth, must be submitted. 3. You must post both your picture and story on this thread only!!! PLEASE DO NOT START ANOTHER THREAD FOR THE CONTEST ENTRY!! 4. The deadline for submitting your entry is 12:00am ( midnight ) on April 29. So if you harvest a bird make sure to enter it on this thread before then!! The winner will be chosen based on a combination of best picture and story submitted. The size of the bird WILL NOT be taken into account, although we encourage that you post the birds stats. As far as the judges are concerned all birds harvested are a trophy!! There will be some great prizes given away this year and we wish everyone a safe and successful hunt!!! GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!! This is not run by HuntingNY.com

  8. Good to see that the common sense approach is finally being applied to the crossbow. By needing bow certification to use one, as needing muzzleloader certification made no sense at all. Killing by broadhead is completely different than killing with a bullet. I'm very happy to see this bill introduced! But would like to see ALL areas that have bow hunting be included as well. Absolutely will be notifying my representatives, asking for their support.

  9. No debate here. I have a lifetime supply of lead bullets for each caliber of rifle that I own. I have enough shot-shells already loaded up to wipe out all the squirrels and rabbits in Ontario County. I am not one to throw out good serviceable products that I paid a wheelbarrow load of money for, and so I know what material I will be shooting until I croak...... It will be the same stuff that people have been shooting forever.

The Joke is Hillary and 4 more of Obama leadership. Trump seems to be pissing off all the right people lately. I would Take Trump over Hillary that's no Joke.

  12. When I was a kid the landscape in NY was a bit different than it is today. I grew up in the country and half of all my friends lived on family farms. Farms were everywhere and that meant there were hay fields and where there were hay fields there were Woodchucks and back then lots of them. I remember well the very first one I took, I was hunting with a friend with my single shot open sight Savage 22 which I think was a model 120. This Savage had to be cocked by pulling the rear of the bolt cocking piece after a shell was chambered. Anyhow we spotted a Chuck out in a hay field and I crawled on my stomach to about thirty yards, the Chuck stood up and I took and made the shot and the kill. I became instantly obsessed with those critters. As I got a little older my Dad started letting me use his Winchester 61 in 22mag which increased the killing range quite a bit over my 22. After a couple of years I graduated up to Dad's Sako 222 and I was pretty much in heaven with that rifle. I put away a lot of Woodchucks with that gun and out to 275 yards or so it was deadly, I also shot my first Buck with that rifle. Well when I was old enough to get a decent job and earn some money I finally purchased my first Varmint rifle, a used in good shape Remington 700 ADL in the then fairly new factory 22/250. That baby added an easy 100 yards to the kill zone and I took full advantage of it's longer range. While I was happy with that Remington 22/250 I still was not satisfied, I dreamed of owning the top dog of Varmint calibers and in my mind that meant the 220 Swift. Problem was nobody back then produced a factory 220 Swift rifle. Winchester dropped the Swift and came out with a lesser cartridge than the 22/250, they called it the 225 Winchester. The Swift always had some bad press about being a barrel burner and, hard to handload for, short case life and the list went on, a lot of that bad press was mostly crap! I think Winchester pulled a boner by discontinuing the Swift and an even bigger boner redesigning their model 70 rifle. In the early seventies I was reading through a Gun Digest and came across an article by Outdoor Life firearms editor Jim Carmichel about Bill Ruger putting in production his model 77 in the 220 Swift with a 26 inch medium heavy varmint barrel. Carmichel who was a huge Swift fan himself gave the preproduction model a glowing report. Man I was excited, I was drooling so bad I must have looked like a mad dog. To make a long story short it was not long before I had one of those Rugers in my possession, she was topped with a straight 12X Leupold scope. I used Jim Carmichel's pet load of 39 grs of IMR 4064 under a 52 gr Sierra match bullet for about 3950 fps and hit accuracy paydirt right off the bat with half inch groups at 100 yds. To say the least me and that Swift back then were a Woodchuck's worst nightmare, I made so many spectacular shots with that rifle that I could not begin to tell about them. What pretty much sums up my thought on the Ruger 220 Swift was on a warm summer day outside of Norwich NY on a hilltop overlooking hundreds of acres of huge hay fields. I had a case guard box of 50 reloads and had just put down number 37 without a miss, I looked down at that rifle and said to myself this thing should be illegal! Al

  16. At least there is some progress being made. I don't get the Albany issue with the crossbow. I have hunted the Pine Bush Preserve which is archery only for the deer season, but, once deer season is over you can hunt there with a shotgun using only non-toxic ammo. If you can use a shotgun for small game, why not a crossbow for deer? Scratching my head over this for a while now.

  17. A simpler and quicker way is to mix your ground venison and seasoning, spread on a cookie sheet the thickness you want, place in freezer a few minutes to firm it up. Then slice your strips the width and length you want, Then dry it!

  21. I wasn't able to find these. They are priced far below Rio, Cabelas has them at a starting point of $15.99. That's doable for hunting, but still steep for practice shooting. I know that doesn't help with the shipping issues, but it does give a price point. I hope the local shops start carrying them, or at least for Dicks to actually stock what they say they have. I found one box of the Rio at local shop and have not seen another box on the shelf there. This thread is more or less just going in circles. Time to get focused on Spring turkey and camping. Enjoy the 'debate' people.

  22. Add Wooly Buggers, stone fly nymphs & Goddard Caddis. (easy to see) I catch 90% of my trout on those 3. Stimulators work good after the stone flies hatch & grasshoppers are about. Late in the season (Sept) sofa pillows can produce. Most guys I watch trying to learn work the cast too fast. You want to give the line time to straighten out before you start your forward & back cast. That will load the rod better & give you more power. A 4-count works well to get the timing right. Keep the slack mended & your rod tip low when anticipating the strike. Give the fish time to turn down before raising the rod to set the hook. The $60ish Scientific Anglers combos Wally World used to sell were some pretty nice balanced outfits. Either the Trout or Panfish combos were good. The only difference between them was the flies which were crap anyway. I bought one for a back-up 4-piece rod.

  24. It's a short process between ten and two, closer to ten than two! In other words the rod should t move very far at all, do not break your wrist, and slow down. Feel the rod load, bring it forward, and stop and let it "fire" that line just like a bow firing. Remember, ten to two on the clock face. Don't drop it behind you and don't let that rod tip get anywhere near parallel to the water

  32. I need some help with that thought. I keep hearing this all the time when they whine about the stock market suffering because of low oil prices. But that is where I get confused. Oil is the primary component of all goods produced ... plastics, fuel for steel furnaces, transport of all products, pretty much everything has the cost of oil factored in at some point in production. So why isn't low oil prices an actual boon to the production of everything but oil? I know I must be overlooking something because low oil prices is universally considered a bad thing. But I'll be darned if I can figure out why.

  34. If you replace the line go W/a 6wgt weight forward line. Always best to err on the heavy side when in doubt. A 5 or 6wgt outfit is a good starting point. It's the weight of the line that makes the leader turn over & present the fly W/O a lot of slack. The bigger the fly, the heavier line you need to overcome wind resistance.

  36. But that's part of the problem with this proposal. By doing these costs estimates of "kill shot and sight ins", you're basically obscuring the real costs to sportsmen and sportswomen. Statements like these also hint at not practicing at the range and being proficient with your implement. What do you think will happen to gun shops, ranges, clubs, etc when lead ammo is restricted or banned? It's sort of like looking through a peephole, not seeing the whole picture. 41. As I posted previously last fall I tried very hard to find and purchase suitable non toxic shot for older guns, none was to be had anywhere because no one was making it. I just found out that Kent is going to be soon producing their own Bismuth shot and will put back into production shot shells that can be used in barrels not proofed for steel. Hopefully it will be priced within reason. Al
