  1. Tough picking my favorites from this set, these guys were very cooperative and I ended up with hundreds of shots of them.

  2. My wife (donna) enjoys drawing dogs using charcoal/pastels. Using .JPG files originals as the model, she draws portraits onto 9 X 12 art paper. Being impressed with her work, as a husband should be, I told her about the guys here with hunting dogs and asked, “How much do you want per drawing?” So if anyone is interested it’s $50 including tax, mailing and handling. Anyone interested can contact me through profile messaging for more information. I'll send you my email address through private messages. Comments to this thread are also welcome.

  3. You overlook the fact that talking about this doesn't follow any of this hierarchy (unlike lead free ammo): Hunting New York - NY Empire State Hunting Forum - Bow Hunting, Fishing, Bear, Deer → Main → General Chit Chat

  10. Wrong option...Cramming antlerless-only down the throat of buck hunters is not going to work.. It may backfire on them..The earn a buck option is a much better plan IMHO, because it gives the buck hunters ( of which there are many) a viable option.. It wouldn't matter to me, personally, because as long as I can shoot a doe or two a year for the freezer, I could care less if I EVER shoot another buck, but to MANY hunters, shooting a buck is a very important goal. To a significant number of those hunters, shooting a BIG buck is very important, and doe-only regulations are not going to change that. I suspect a backlash involving hunters refusing to shoot does is more likely.

  11. I don't know Dom, I haven't seen a pic posted here yet that looks like it was made by anything other than a buck. It's a little ironic you should post the bear thought today though. I went out for a short hike this evening and found fresh claw marks in this tree from what I assume would have been a bear. I looked them over pretty closely and could tell something with some weight to it had been hanging from there. It was certainly no coon or porky. We don't see many bear around my area except one or two that pass through each spring. Seeing this kinda got me feeling all excited hoping to bump into the sucker while I had the camera. I'm hoping he sticks around and shows himself now that the weather is turning nicer.

  12. If you want a debate about predators, the carrying capacity of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the unnatural situation that created this opportunity for wolves, and wolves in general, posting such propaganda is not helpful. WY government has a negative attitude towards wolves. However, it is disturbing that a WY wildlife official will anthropomorphize them to affect public sentiment. Predators kill. It is not "sport". It is deadly serious. They kill more than they can eat because food is not always available. Kill a bunch and you have food for a long while. A carcass is an ephemeral thing. A whole range of scavengers will strip it in a short time. I've seen adult deer carcasses stripped by just ravens in several hours. The "mostly calves" comment is over the top. According to the RMEF "Calf: Baby elk". Those "calves" are a couple hundred pounds in March, not babies. The area where they feed elk at Jackson is a man-made disaster, an elk zoo. The spokesman is "concerned" about the wolves behavior but apparently not so much for unnatural concentration that created this situation. The reason the elk are stuck there and must be fed hay is because humans blocked their migration route. The elk are effectively confined in the valley, where they depend on humans to bring hay. If elk could migrate, they would be spread out across the landscape.

  13. Well, if you consider a Toyota Prius a blind... These were sort of a unique scenario. We spent the weekend at my in-laws who are the last house on a dead end road. A couple hundred yards past their house the beavers have blocked a culvert and created a really nice beaver swamp. The water is actually up onto the edge of the pavement in a couple spots. I took my wife's car down and sat there shooting these from the window. What's funny is I spent the day before at Montezuma but got better shots shooting these birds from the car. I should also mention that maneuvering a 600mm f/4 inside a Prius is a bit challenging.

  17. That's right. I need an atlatl. The DEC will surely open an Atlatl season in late September. They have to define the regs in such a way to include simple spear for those that regard using the launching stick too modern. LOL

  18. Or just obey the law, its not worth it for many reasons..... My best friend(my father) and his best friend were just killed in a car accident coming home from fishing on March 11, 2016 in Farmington, NY when a man with his 4 children in the vehicle, ran a red light while speeding, on a road within the town he lived and I'm sure he had traveled dozens of times before... Its just not worth it Just be observant and cautious of others....

  20. I know you didn't ask me, but I'll give my opinion....it'll never happen but I would give up the first two weeks of archery to recurve and longbow only and then follow that with compound and crossbow season. I'd do the same with muzzleloader season, the ones now are just the same as centerfire and most better then shotguns.

  23. Actually, I find it quite difficult to take good quality pics of a mount where everything is in proportion. I may be a bit biased, but...I believe my mounts are more realistic than what most people around here get back from their taxidermists. Honestly, most people don't know what to look for in a quality mount; if it resembles a deer they are happy with it. Not me...

  25. on my camp. I have been moving mounts down to camp each trip, space is becoming scarce and its starting to get the appearance of being cluttered with everything. Basically there is no open / usable corner, flat top cabinet, and even open wall space is getting scarce. The even bigger deciding factor of needing to add on is what is still at the taxidermists or in the freezer to be dropped off yet. I'm thinking its going to be 12x 16 with an 8 ft deck on the west side, full 8 ft. walls and will go with a cathedral ceiling to gain me more sq. footage on the gable ends. some of the stuff that made the trip last night this one is on the built in dresser in the master bedroom. this guy is setting on what will likely now become a call display cabinet until I can build one with enough room. this one is setting on a stand in the living room until I can design and build a corner elevated glass case to put him in. the photo behind him was taken 3 weeks prior to me killing him and about 200 yards from the spot. at the top of the stairs for now, I do not care for it there at all but it was the only available space even bookcases and the grandkids bedroom walls are not exempt at this point.

  29. You really expect anything from the Heritage Foundation who are pro-fracking to be anything but pro-fracking? "Shake, Rattle and Roll: For the first time ever, the U.S. Geological Survey is chronicling the potential hazards of human-induced earthquakes (read: fracking). The report being released today is timely: The Oklahoma Corporation Commission on March 7 directed oil and gas companies to reduce the volume of fracking wastewater they inject underground by 40% in areas with seismicity concerns. According to USGS, Ark., Colo., Texas and Ohio also have higher-than-average seismic activity." http://about.bgov.com/blog/earthquakes-caused-by-fracking-mapped-future-of-pipeline-safety/ http://fsrn.org/2016/03/fracking-linked-earthquakes-open-sociopolitical-rifts-in-oklahoma/ http://www.thenation.com/article/demand-that-president-obama-end-fracking-on-public-lands/ http://ecowatch.com/2016/03/24/mckibben-fracking-climate-change/ http://billingsgazette.com/news/state-and-regional/wyoming/epa-criticizes-state-fracking-study/article_2d16c52b-3f18-5805-b3a1-ec296aac84ad.html Scientists Urge Feds to Continue Fracking Moratorium off CA Coasthttp://sandiegofreepress.org/2016/03/scientists-urge-feds-to-continue-fracking-moratorium-off-ca-coast/

  31. The first year I waled into the deer woods with my father was 1973. I have hunted pretty much all over NY state. from Albany area to lake Erie, high peaks and ADK par to the PA boarder, I have seen ups and downs in the deer hunting and deer numbers but over the years i believe the hunting in NY has gotten better than it was when I started into the woods.

  32. not to mention that very few are willing to give an inch to gain a few yards, that want all or nothing......if that happened, I would personally adapt and learn how to use a recurve, not stomp my feet and cry because I "lost" something.

  33. So, was our way of life stolen when the automobile replaced the horse and buggy? Or when airplanes made it possible to cross the oceans in a matter of hours? Or when medical advances cured polio? Would it have been better if we had just stayed where we were? Of course not. Things change and advance. We either change with the times or get left behind.

  34. I remember years ago approaching the Amherst town board with the help of NY bowhunters and at that time the board shot down the proposal as they believed that we "bowhunters" could not be efficient enough to take out the numbers of deer they believed was necessary. They voted to approve the police to do bait and shoot instead! That was then and now there is a completely different town board so maybe it's time to give it another try? You would think that they would listen if you could show how it would save them tax dollars and possibly even make money through the sale of permits. Also there are areas in the town that a bowhunter could access that are not safe to use the police sharpshooters.

  36. Easier to get to than a gun in a night stand. When I owned my business the only way I could properly conceal was with a ankle holster. Nothing else worked in my line of work. For many years the ankle holster was my go-to method for carrying in Pennsylvania while turkey hunting. We camped out and always slept better with a snub nose for comfort. When we left the truck to hunt, it was the way I choose to carry. Many times I'd forget it was there and cross a creek or two during the day, resulting in a poly wog or two in the barrel. I also used a shoulder holster but it shrunk........................................... These days, my snubbies go in a pocket; sometimes holstered, sometimes not. For my Shield I use a Ritchie CQ-QR............ http://www.ritchieholsters.com/catalog/p-100009/close-quarter-quick-release-cq-qr I like it a ton. My kel Tec P32 is either in a DeSantis pocket holster or just in the pocket.

  45. So I haven't had much time this winter to get out and do much. Did zero small game or predator hunting. I did get out once so far for shed hunting. Did a quick once over of our food plots and some of the major trails near the thick stuff. Found a decent 4 point shed from one of the local 2 year olds smack in the middle of one of the WR plots.

  46. I hate to break it to you guys but since NYS police stopped coming to court they have a DA that trys to plead down your ticket they dont call it a trial date like they used to. If you and the DA cannot make a deal then the issuing officer has to come and state his claim at a different date and time this would be your trial. if you look at your ticket they usually come with a supporting deposition from the officer this gives the DA some idea what the officer is claiming as a reason for the citation in the first place. so to answer your question (no the officer does not have to be present in court and him not being there does not mean they throw out your ticket)

Been using them since 2011 wo a problem. Beat mechanical I've touched. I got some rage hypos on a whim as well- gave them to a buddy. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
