  2. We are departing NY around 8:00 this evening to make the 687 mile trek to Hardinsburg, KY. It was quite a task getting all of the gear ready to go as my wife and I moved into our house this past fall and I had to remember where everything was. It sure takes alot of gear to kill a few birds!!! We should pull into camp around 8-9:00 tomorrow morning just in time to get out and do some last minute scouting. The weather is supposed to be nice and I'm hoping the KY gobblers will be lonely and ready to play!!!

  5. Made Venison Osso Buco last night........I will never grind another shank again!! Used this recipe https://www.brokenarrowranch.com/Recipes/VenisonOssoBuco.htm I cooked it in the oven for about a little over two hours. I think it could have used another 20-30 minutes but WOW!!!! served it over cheesy polenta and already looking forward to getting more shanks for the freezer! Highly recommend this.

  7. it's funny, down south a 4 year old can pull a trigger. Why the government feels they need to regulate the piss out of everything because they know what's best for us and our children because 1 out of every 100k hunters is an idiot is still beyond me.

  8. I had some octo-pie (that's the plural form of octo-pussies) escape from my apartment one time years ago... I'd like to believe they made their way back to the bottom of the sea, but the suction cup footprints ended in the parking right next to two tracks of burnt rubber, lol

  9. Well after years of trying to get some birds to stock and not hunt , my neighbor and I got 140 phesant last year, we released them around our properties and the neighbors property. A few were taken in youth hunt and a few more by our 80 year old neighbor. I'm sure. Few more were taken of adjoining land. This morning hearing the cackle of a cock at the end of my driveway, and then this afternoon seeing a nice cock and a few hens in neighbors crp field while looking for sheds. For the 1st time I am very optimistic that we may actually have some nesting take place this year. We have cooperatively worked on habitat, hedgerows, standing crp fields, standing corn, thermal cover,in the hope we could re establish some phesant that could then stand some limited hunting pressure.. The project will continue.. I wish nys would take this approach rather than put and take..

  10. Been very pleased over the last few years with Heavi Mag Blends but wanted to check some others out too. Used to order Nitro Company triplex blends but Safe Act nixed that. First up :40 lasered yards. For fun second target at lasered 65 yards Third target are Fusion at 40 yards. Not real happy with these. They ain't cheap either Pretty impressed with XR's and the price too. Box of 10 less than Magblends and Fusions for box of 5 Remington 1187 super magnum Rhino .660 tube and Bushnell circle x optics

  12. I tend to hunt with the bare minimums my Camo is not top shelf neither are my weapons. I buy a few guns over the year to try out as good deals present themselves but end up reselling as nothing compares to the confidence I have with my current set ups....that being said I am looking at the Matthew's no cam htr weekly and want it bad....but my bow still fires accurately and never let's me down lol Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk

  15. Thanks. There will six of us in camp. Last year we started out as the stereotypical "NY guys", I think they were a bit surprised to find out we were rednecks that could actually kill turkeys!!!

  16. About Christmas a co-worker asked me for antlers because he wanted to get back into making knifes. I had about 15 to 20 sheds and other antlers from deer I killed or found dead I gave him. I got my knife back and it's really nice. I know exactly which shed he used and I could take anyone right to where I found it because I hunt there regularly and it's about a five minute walk from my backdoor. The farmers of that area ought to flood these creeps with all kinds of cattle for them to buy. Break the suckers .... lol. Let them put their money where their mouth is ...... ALL of their money.

  20. Octopus slips out of aquarium tank, crawls across floor, escapes down pipe to ocean https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/animalia/wp/2016/04/13/octopus-slips-out-of-aquarium-tank-crawls-across-floor-escapes-down-pipe-to-ocean/ Inky the octopus didn’t even try to cover his tracks. By the time the staff at New Zealand’s National Aquarium noticed that he was missing, telltale suction cup prints were the main clue to an easily solved mystery. Inky had said see ya to his tank-mate, slipped through a gap left by maintenance workers at the top of his enclosure and, as evidenced by the tracks, made his way across the floor to a six-inch-wide drain. He squeezed his football-sized body in — octopuses are very malleable, aquarium manager Rob Yarrall told the New Zealand website Stuff — and made a break for the Pacific.

  24. I spend a lot on clothes because IMO it's the most important thing I use for hunting. My bows are top of the line but I buy year olds on line. I'm never paying a grand for a bow that you literally can't give away three/four years later

  25. Hands down BEST hunting show I've ever watched! They really make me feel like I'm on the hunt with them. I print a lot of his recipes out too. As far as the OP, I like watching pretty much anything the Drury boys do. They obviously promote a good amount of products but what I enjoy about them most is the videos they make outside of their hunting shows. A week or two ago I watched a video with Mark Drury and Billy Yargus where they went over the different kinds of turkey talk and how they get those sounds w a mouth call and a slate. They also went over set up, roosting birds, etc. It was like a 15 minute video and was really informative. It was posted on their facebook page.

  27. Unsupervised 12 y/o with rifles out hunting? Pretty much commonplace across several parts of the nation and no measurable detriment to safety. The safest people tend to be the ones mentored and the ones who recently took the hunter's ed course (12 y/os). Unlike most hunters on this site - I cut my teeth in a state where we didn't have these restrictions and the fear-mongering is so far off the mark its not even funny. I moved to NY at a time where I had already been hunting for several years, ran point on dog running (with the warden's personal dogs no less), and then had to sit out an entire season of deer hunting in NY because I was too young according to the Nancies in charge. Give me a break Doc.

  28. If a hunter taking that survey was around one either properties (either DMAP or Nuisance), they are much more likely to observe impacts. The other is the fear of the unknown - if one hears of a farm with either nearby or next door, they are likely to attribute observations to this causation, whether correct or not.

  29. Thats one fight you will never win. Its been proven throughout history. Embrace it and move along, or get left behind. My kids have ipads, xbox, computers, phones, etc and look at how interested in the outdoors they are. Its all about keeping things in balance.

  30. 732 responses isnt too bad considering the normal fluctuations in site traffic here. It was posted during a normal "quiet time" of the year. Not much hunting activity going on. Just because there are half to three quarters of a million hunters in the state, there are only 6000 or so registered members. Of those, maybe 1/4 are really active. Our Facebook page has just over 2200 likes total. The vast majority are most likely regularly active or semi-regularly active members here.

  31. When I hunted with my sister for the first time last spring turkey and fall deer seasons, I tried to take ALL the work out of it for her! Granted, she's 41 years old and could have done most of it herself, but I know what it's like to be thrown into an uncomfortable situation with the fear of screwing up even the simplest tasks. I tried to take all that worry out of it for her and all she had to do was show up and hike in..... and bring me lunch, lol One day she even showed up early and realized when she got here that she forgot her gun! What can you do besides laugh about it! We hunted the same way you do and had an absolute BLAST in the woods even on days we didn't see or hear a thing. Hunting really is a lot of fun when you don't take it so seriously, and that's what gets newbies hooked are the good times not the kills!

  32. ApexerER congrats on your new S&W I hope it works out well for you. I had a heck of a time finding something I liked and could stay with. Over the years I have tried out a bunch of small cc revolvers and pistols looking for the ideal gun, I first went with some rimfires with the thought that they would be easy to shoot and cheap to practice with. I started with a S&W 34 snub nose kit gun, really had no complaints, top quality, 100% function, reasonably good accuracy. I then got my hands on a Budischowsky TP 70 22 LR, a sort of US copy of the Walther tph, liked the concept but it was totally unreliable. An S&W 422 sportsman, small, reliable and decent accuracy. I kept the sportsman and sent the other two down the road. I then upped the power and picked up a nice older Walther PPK in 32 acp, very nice, functioned perfect and accurate. I know James Bond and his secret service thought well of the 32 acp but I did not care for it at all. Very limited in ammo and pretty weak as far as I am concerned. Had it been chambered in 380 acp I would probably still have it, so in the end that went down the road. Decided to up the power more and gave a 2 3/4 inch 357 Colt Python a try out, beautiful craftsmanship, accurate, powerful and loud, but very heavy and pretty hard to comfortably conceal. I sent the Colt packing. After all the auditions I think for me I finally found what I wanted, the Sig p938, small size and easy to conceal power, reliability and good accuracy and most of all a single action. To make it right for me I did change out the trigger and hammer spring to get the pull the way I wanted it. Mutt and Jeff

  35. Well that statement clearly shows you are incapable of a conversation outside you agenda, you know nothing about firearms or both. Better stick with the Pot and Meth smoking and stay away from firearms. Semi Confined targets, unarmed, unarmored but movable and a rifle is the most efficient weapon? Especially in an untrained persons hands? The point is, they are going after the manufacturer for their pound of flesh. It has nothing to do with their assertions about the rifle used. wow....just wow.

  39. If that is all you think it is about, you are paying your dues but not understanding what is being worked on or promoted. Very easy to sit on the outside and throw stones. Why not step up, get involved and work towards something? Or is it just easier to piss and moan?

  41. Mike What is the NYQDMAs agenda? I've posted this before- I am a Qdma member and feel sold out to read how They thank the dec for their efforts to reach out and work with hunters. That's a crock. The dec is inept and letting all of us who hunt deer down. They're not managing the herd or interacting with hunters.. And the quality deer part is bs as well as we all disagree with their reported harvest numbers and ages. I totally agree with you on the NYSCC and will add it's a crock of chit they are mandated to be part of anything. Guessing most of us have never met the members let alone have been questioned by them. I also see they have a fee to join which says a lot. As for how hard it is to do the survey- quite contrary. I am guy none of you know and I had 500+ responses in a day. The dec, who's job is to know what hunters desire, should do far better than 2700 unless that's their scape goat. Judging by my conversations and survey responses that contradict theirs (always have too).... They want no opposition. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  43. Reminds me of song from the J Giels Band......................Freeze Frame! Man you stopped that little bugger COLD!! On Monday we started a big window job at a ladies house in East Amherst. She said she had some darned bird pecking at her front doors. They had polished brass toe kicks on each door. The guys taped some cardboard to the painted doors to ward off the little pecker head. Nobody saw the bird in action but NOW we know who done it.

  45. With the right habitat and the right pheasants I believe it very possible to have a sustaining huntable population of pheasants. The next best thing to releasing wild trapped birds is hatching pheasant eggs with game hens, they are hens from the old time fighting cocks. You have to have a large flight pen and let the hens raise the chicks naturally with as little human interaction as possible. The game hens will teach those pheasant chicks how to find food and avoid danger. When released as young adults they will be much better prepared to survive than a regular pen raised pheasant. Al

  49. If you have a grinder, its really not hard to mix the meat with ground pork shoulder by hand and do sausage patties. Trust me, my family members that claim not to like venison, love the Italian and breakfast sausage. Assuming you have less than 20lbs, its a 2-3 hour job. Have you tried using the burger in tacos or chili? Also pretty good if mixed with 1/4 ground bacon (my kids love these burgers). To your original question, I have no idea. Costanzas is the only one I have used.
