  3. Well, I'll start off by saying I was the only person out of six that didn't kill a bird...but, I did call a few gobblers into gun range and had a blast doing it. The weather was a lot better than last year and the amount of gobbling was unbelievable but the birds were henned up and the terrain made it tough to get them in. There were a ton of jakes too so next year should be awesome!!! Called this one in for my dad on day 2... The following day I called in a longbeard for my wife and she ended up missing due to a poor setup on my part. The following day I arrived back in camp around 11:00 all beat down and tired after a four hour stand off with a gobbler (should have killed him) to find seven jakes in the field out back. We quickly got around on them and coaxed them into range and she popped one after he seperated from the others. Not a longbeard, but a fun hunt none the less. My buddies birds... Few sheds we picked up...

  5. For the record, I support the dove hunting efforts. I don't support some of the tactics used to publicize/inform. Others have remarked the same to me about it, but it's not my role to insert myself into it. It just leaves a bitter taste on a topic that people should be excited about. I was and am prepared to donate for the advertising campaign, but the responses from you are making me second guess it out of concern for the abrasiveness.

  8. If a crossbow is classified as a bow, and you need to purchase a bow privilege to hunt with it you would need to have taken the bow class. The intent of these bills as written will not require you to retake the bow class if you took it in the past. If you have never taken a bow class in the past and or had a bow license in NY, you would have to take the class to purchase the bow license.

  9. The Huff Post, along with all of the rest of the leftist mass media, spends lots of time and millions of dollars, pushing anti-gun propaganda on the American citizen. It is effective on dullards and Leftist Liberals who have a hatred of firearms to begin with, mainly because they have no real intellectual understand of them, or their useful purposes. Here's a look from the other side of the fence. "When so-called "assault weapons" were banned by the Bill Clinton administration in 1994, the overwhelming majority of Americans (80%) supported it. Now, not even a majority do. The turnaround is nothing short of remarkable. More Americans disapprove (53%) than approve (45%) today than they did 22 years ago — despite the increasingly vile attitude we see from mainstream media zealots. Yet this also helps explain why Americans are increasingly accepting of guns. The mass media enjoyed a virtual monopoly over communication in 1994. That effectively gave the Left control over the narrative, and disinformation campaigns were easy to orchestrate. But all that began to change during the Information Age. As Dean Weingarten of The Truth About Guns observes, "Conservative talk radio had already begun to make inroads into American culture, and the Internet was just starting to become a viable method of mass communication. The opponents of the ban managed to include a sunset to the bill ten years in the future. By the time the sunset came due, enough people had learned the truth about 'assault weapons' to prevent an extension of the bill." He adds, "Clearly emotion-based arguments and lies can sway an electorate to support gun control. But when the facts are disseminated, support diminishes. That's why the proponents of civilian disarmament push so hard to pass gun control measures quickly." We see a similar reaction unfolding on the issue of background checks. Thank heavens we still have an open media. It's no wonder the marketplace of ideas that has become a hallmark of conservative media is the Democrats' next point of attack."

  10. yeah, too bad many form an opinion based on one's appearance or how they perceived his lifestyle......I'm a big fan of older Country music, but if you look at some of those guys, they were some of the biggest drug users, drunks and whatever else that was out there......

  13. If you were really serious about salvaging it in any way, you might want to contact one of your local hunters ed instructors and see if they'd be interested in it as a donation. They use a lot of "props" in their classroom setting to point out different weapons parts and carrying techniques to the class members as well as pass pieces around in a show and tell fashion. It wouldn't necessarily have to be functional for that..., I would think. A bow that needs some work might be a good example to address some safety concerns new hunters may not be aware of. I took the course again last spring, and I think I noticed a few of the instructors cringing a few times as they passed around a lot of their own personal gear to be handled and examined by the noobs. Might be worth a shot to throw it out there as a teaching tool.

  15. First and foremost there are some MAJOR forum changes coming shortly. We have to upgrade to the latest version of the software we use to run the site, some functionality will change as this is a major bump from where we are now. I expect there to be some issues during the conversion and upgrade, if you notice something let us know. Second, we are moving to 100% SSL full encryption (HTTPS). Logins, posts, the ENTIRE site will be encrypted from your PC/Phone/Table to our servers, this might not mean much to most but its a necessity in this day and age. In short, it prevents prying eyes from seeing anything, which is only a good thing (trust me I'm a IT Geek). Third we have been very laxed, perhaps to much in the moderation of posts and enforcement of our rules. The downside is a few members have chosen to exploit these opportunities to post curses, attacks and other completely useless content that doesn't belong here. There will be no warnings other then this one. Keep it clean, do not attack other members, do not curse (family site). I and all the amazing folks that help maintain and participate in this community have no time to baby sit. We will no longer issue warnings for something you should already know. You break the rules you are not welcome here. See: http://huntingny.com/rules Thanks All John

  16. Here are only a few pics from the latest card pull, i had hundreds of pictures of birds strutting in 2 weeks time. This camera is over my "murder plot", September 2015 planted WI forage oats, and WI clover. And my blind is setup just off the corner of the frame on the right side. Come May 1st i will put the cam on video, which will record sound as well in HD.. I was quite happy

  21. Love this site but the political posts and bashing is a big turn off. Simply put if you do not have anything nice to say, keep it to yourself. Nothing wrong with disagreeing about some issues like doe season, crossbows or any other post but the attacks on each other are disheartening to say the least. A few things missing: Respect, we are all hunters show some respect regardless if the person is a first year hunter or has been in the game for over 70 years. No one likes to be trampled on regardless of insight or knowledge on the subject and we are all entitled to our opinions. If you disagree state why and be done with the post, no need to follow a post you disagree with just so you can rebut someone who might agree. Learn to let the little things go, I can say for sure someone will disagree with you on something, no point in getting upset over someone wrong on the internet we have millions of them and you can fix the ignorant or misinformed. Try to see things from others point of view. I had to step back from my "Big Buck" mentality to jump on the doe ban wagon, crossbows, youth hunts etc. but in the long run this site has changed my opinion on many things seeing it the way others do! Perspective!!! We all see different things in the woods so remember not all perspective will be the same, try to understand why others have a different view. If you really do not like the site then LEAVE!!! Staying on a site you do not like sounds self serving and egocentric to me! Keep up the good work! Hope the updates work out to all of our benefits. Thanks again to one of my favorite sites on the internet! Keep up the good work!

  26. It's certainly becoming an oppressive regime. We've transitioned from being a Constitutional Republic to being a Democracy, and are now quickly becoming an Oligarchy. I see nothing "radical' about trying to preserve what remains of our founding principles, or restoring our Republic.

  27. The word "Bald" is demeaning to bald people, "Falls" is demeaning to physically handicapped people, who may have trouble walking on their own, "Hood" is a racist term, saying "Marlin" only , discriminates against all other fish (or firearms) and the word "grand" leaves out all lesser Tetons!!!…….. So nice try Mr Hater!!! Its people like you!!!!

  28. That's exactly the position the American Tories took when the colonies decided to take up arms against the most powerful military in the world at the time. Yes, the patriots knew they could be killed. They also believed freedom was worth the fight. It is better to die standing up than live on your knees. Many government regimes that have oppressed their own people have been beaten, simply because the oppressed people have been willing to die fighting them. The only reason any American government entity attacks it's citizen's 2nd Amendment rights is to destroy their ability to resist oppression. It's been proven every time any gun control regulation has been passed, including the SAFE Act you referred to, because none of these laws have ever done anything to stop any crimes. They are only used against responsible gun owners. Any government that does that has evil plans. Feel free to continue believing that's not the case.

  29. That is a good book to use as a starting point. I have hiked pieces of the AT (day hikes) in NY and Virginia. Bear Mountain/Harriman State park has many trails through it including the AT. I have camped in three areas of Harriman on overnights with the Boy Scouts. Doodletown is one area - old house foundations, the village cemetery is there. Nice cold stream near the remnants of a garage/carriage house. No cell service in that area (discovered that when needed to call out for a medical issue - a kid broke his arm). Fingerboard shelter overlooks Lake Tiorati - steep hike up. Small spring 1-2 minutes uphill from the shelter. Some cell service there if needed. White Bar off of Route 106 (western edge of Harriman State Park). Bring some water with you and plan on filtering/boiling (or both) any water from streams or springs. We used an old coffee can (#8 can) to boil the water right on the camp fire - when done, simply crushed the can to pack it out. Not sure when you are planning on going, but right now we have fire ban - it is very dry and have seen ground fires between housing developments traveling up hill through the trees. So streams are low or dry now most-likely.

  41. I don't work for them nor do I live in Allegany County but I am going. I just spoke with someone close to the fire and registrations are on the light side this year so I thought I would post. If it must be removed then no worries. Just trying to help them out. Just a reminder that it is this weekend for anyone interested. Tagged trout worth $25 - $1000 with one fish (known as the Community Fish) that could be worth a few thousand. Last year it was worth $6,000 with half going to the one who caught it and the other half going to a raffle ticket. If any of you are interested then you can check out the link at the Lions Club Website below. http://www.trout-derby.com/

  42. The problem with the 200 lb weight limit is draw weight does not always have a direct relation to the power of the bow. A 290 lb Excalibur recurve crossbow shoots at 405 fps while a Scorpyd VTEC with a 175 lb draw weight shoots at 440fps. As with compound bows, cam design does more for speed than draw weight alone, When referring to recurve crossbows or recurve vertical bows, draw weight is the major factor in speed. So the 200 lb draw weight limit does not have the effect of limiting the power of crossbows that you are concerned with, but instead, only eliminates the majority of recurve crossbows presently on the market. And those recurve crossbows are not any faster than the average compound crossbow, and all are slower that the fastest compound crossbows on the market today.

  44. I took Haley out to get her a few shots on my 12 Ga semi that we will be using for turkey. She was a little nervous, as it's the biggest gun she's ever shot. After 2 shots, the nerves were gone. She felt a bit more comfortable using the shooting stick. I had her take 2 shots with no ear plugs so she knew what to expect. She did pretty darn good.

  45. The 2nd Amendment wasn't written for deer hunting. How well did those "trained professionals" protect the people during the LA riots, Katrina and Ferguson? They are under no duty to protect any individual in America. The SCOTUS already ruled on that. You are on your own. If you think our government gives one sheet about you, you are delusional. I don't trust the government. Nobody should. And I don't fear them either, because we have the 2nd Amendment and the US Constitution, as well as many people who swore an oath to defend both, and intend to live up to that oath if need be, unlike the people running the government today.

  47. Relax. It's standard legal procedure for the defendants to ask to have the suit dismissed. This judge just made a political decision, rather than the correct legal one. The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act of 2005 says it's illegal for this suit to proceed, so I expect it will not turn out well for the plaintiffs in the long run.
