Headed out at about 7 again. Got set up at the edge of the same field, but about 100 yards to the right, from where I had been setting up.\\ I give a couple yelps on the slate, and get a distant answer. I wait a couple and give 2 or 3 more soft yelps and he sounds like he's right on top of me. There is a small hump that butts out from the woods, to my right that I can't see around but I know he is just around that hump and coming from the right, I see movement and get the gun up…I see 1..2…5..6 birds. ALL GEESE!!! LOL!! I wait and sure enough a jake. Then two jakes then 3 and 4 along with 6 hens come around the "hump" and are right in front of me 20 yards. One tom has about a 6" thin beard and I want to take him, but they are so bunched up that there is no way I could shoot with out killing more than one turkey, not to mention the bunch of geese that are right behind them….WTF??? They slowly move off to my left, and the geese would occasionally get pissed and honk and flap at them, causing all of the toms to gobble all at once!! LOL! It happened 4 or 5 times.. I tried to cut them off at the other end of the fields, but the farmer started working the fields with the tractor and obviously scared them off to somewhere.. Good morning ….Back tomorrow

Good day to be in the woods. Not a turkey seen or heard. Haven't been out since May 2nd it really greened up nicely and the apple trees looked awesome all flowered up. Saw a bunch of chipmunks, a red squirrel, two geese, and a woodpecker. Had fun walking a bit and already planning some tree stand spots for the fall.

Well I am going to guess the OPs "Big Woods" question is geared toward shots taken at shorter ranges which is the case most times when hunting large forested areas. Most of my Deer hunting is done in woods and I believe every one of my shots taken in the woods have been under 100 yards especially early in the season when all the leaves are still on. Back in the shotgun slug only days I killed plenty with a weapon that I do not consider to have gilt edged accuracy when compared to most rifles but accurate enough to place those old Foster slugs in the kill zone. In the last 30 or so years almost all the Deer I have taken have been with a rifle and few with a muzzleloader. Most with my 280 Remington Husqvarna and several in recent years with my Dad's model 95 45-70 Marlin lever gun. The common denominator on all those guns was I know exactly how they perform and had enough confidence in them that I could hit where I was aiming. So I guess what I am saying is as long as your Deer gun has enough power and you can shoot it and hit what you are aiming at with confidence it will do the job for you in big woods. Al

Been working on my new hunting rig, started it 5 years ago , nearing completion now.. got all the glass in and 1/2 wired.. turns over ,one sending unit is hooked up in tank it should purr lIke a kitten...

I took Jenny out to play "Hide-N-Seek" with the fawn this evening. We found him again!

10th day today. Played with birds and heard them talk only 3. We know there are birds there but not talking for us. Not even on roost. Other side of road on that hill has had birds ripping every day and all day. I'd say the bird population and activity a little down from years past. Tomorrow I'm going elsewhere and stare at new trees.

I like big 6s. Not a huge fan of the wood slab. JMO. I kinda like those metal mounting brackets they sell for euros. I still want to know what happened to the buck your daughter knocked out. You might catch him on cam this year, a bit more cautious though.

I think a lot of long-time Adirondack residents, not just those who hunt, would disagree with you. A few, but powerful and wealthy, advocacy groups (ADK Mountain club) have been very stubborn about insisting that the APA classify many areas as Wilderness that had traditionally been open to the locals (and the public in general) for a multitude of uses (hunting, fishing, drive-in access, sea-plane access). No one is arguing that the ADK park should be turned into one big ATV/4x4 park, but at the same time there are whole swaths of land that people used to use for recreation (hunting, fishing, camping) that no one hardly uses anymore due to how remote it is...and I'm talking from experience here as I have actually taken the time to find and hike down these old logging/hunting roads in the Pepperbox Wilderness area and Essex Chain of Lakes, among other areas...I've hardly seen a soul on these hikes and camping trips because of how long it takes to get there. I'm not saying that I expect the wilderness to be teeming with people and activity, but by comparison, I've seen extensive swaths of Wild Forest areas (which are more permissible with motorized access) and I can tell you that the noise and traffic is minimal at best....you get a few hundred yards away from the main roads or the trailheads and you're quickly feeling alone in the woods. Honestly, I think the best thing the APA could do is issue a sort of "back country" license to fishermen, hunters, sportsmen, or anyone seeking to get deeper into some of these wilderness areas...sort of a pass that would allow them to drive their vehicles a down these old logging and hunting roads for purposes of access. Fees could go towards maintaining the roads and ecosystem in general. The DEC could put a key fob device at the gates so that people who legally bought the pass are the only ones who get access and if they get caught breaking rules or abusing their access, revoke the pass. We have the technology to do that sort of thing and given that you have to buy in, it would still keep the vehicle traffic restricted to certain roads (that in all honesty really don't see much if any foot traffic nowadays) and to a minimum. Hunting in the ADK's is hard enough as it is due to the low density of game, so hunters need all the access they can get to get into good spots. And fisherman would appreciate the easier access to the more remote lakes and ponds. A little more motorized access won't hurt anyone or anything despite what the environmental groups whine about. Edit: BTW, I'm sure at some point in the future, bullets will use an entirely different material other than lead, but a lot of people tend to forget that lead is a naturally occurring element and that when lead bullets were banned in California, the # of raptor deaths didn't really change much either because there we were being poisoned by other sources of lead (either man-made or natural). The amount of lead put into the ground by hunters is minimal compared to the amount of runoff and pollution created by a whole slue of other activities (farming, construction, roadway traffic, human traffic, power plants, ect.). People pick and choose what outrages them in this day and age. There is no shortage of groups of will cry "bloody murder" over small pieces of lead being shot into the ground, but they have absolutely no problem hooking up their iphones, computers, and A/C to a powergrid that relies predominantly on fossil fuel powerplants.

So, results for phase 1 are in. I whiffed on the lotto but the wife pulled her first choice tags, so we are a go for gator hunting. Anyone else apply?

in areas I've hunted in regions 4,5, and 8 the trigger fingers start getting pretty twitchy once they see a 2.5 year old. 3.5 yr old buck usually trips the trigger without thought of "should I let this go". some private land situations are a little different but would be the exception I'd think. out here in region 4 I've found that passing practically all yearlings and a small portion of 2.5 yr olds is the limit of what general hunting public is excepting of. beyond that you're trying to get trophy bucks with unrealistic goals when dealing with such a large portion of the hunters with varying goals. I completely acknowledge and in life outside these forums procure exemptions for portions of hunters, like first time hunters of any age and youth hunters. outside of my specific area I help manage I'm even open to others reasons. you just can't expect acceptable success, acceptable opportunity, and satisfaction of the majority to exist if you're passing bucks 3.5+ yrs old in my opinion.

some have a delusional thought that it'll all of the sudden give them record book antlers. others know it'll have 95" deer running around that they can shoot at and be perfectly happy with a set of antlers that size. many just probably think it'd be nice to see some bucks while on stand and enjoy watching them for once just act like deer instead of targets running the gauntlet. others in some areas of the state are most likely concerned that, as you've stated, it's an issue with the peak of rutting activity and breeding taking place during the middle of the hunting season and when people are knocking them down before they can seek out enough doe to do part of what they're put on this earth to do. I could keep going... I'm sure there's a lot of varying reasons why hunters would. we're a diverse bunch of individuals.

At least trains can go to/from GCT now. It was just the Bronx and then subway. I got 1:13 train because of Saturday schedule instead of 46min. Sucks!

Got out at around 7. Nice tom with one hen out in a plowed field. I snuck with in about 150 yards and set up on the edge of the field and watched for a little while. He was in full display and every time he got close to the feeding hen, she would flap and scamper away from him, a few yards. I figured I could call him away from the little tease, so when he had his a$$ to me I gave a few soft yelps. He liked it. He answered me and was heading straight at me. The field kind of rolls, so every time his head went out of sight, under a knoll, I would give a soft yelp or 2, which he would answer. Once he was at about 70 yards and heading for me, I got the gun up. Then he turns to my right and starts gobbling towards the woods. I couldn't move or call. The prick heads into the woods gobbling. No other hens were sounding off. Once he was out of sight I went back to the call. He answered a few times but never showed up.. I don't know what the hell happened...

One last shed for 2016... I'm calling it a season. I found this thick whitetail shed in the Adirondacks while looking for moose sheds. Scores 60" despite only having a 20" main beam and a 2.5" browtine... (5/13/16, #59)

Once we solve this problem I'm moving on to all of the utility marking paint all over the roads and sidewalks in our town.

Was going to do chili dogs. But, picked up a 50ct bag of Maine Clams at Price Chopper. Didn't want to keep them in the fridge for too long. Had a few raw and steamed the rest. Not the best clams on the planet but still a great change from the norm.

Well not including my labor ( I can't tell you how many hours I worked on it and it sat for months with nothing done) I have about 15k in parts and paint.. that includes body prep tools as I had none and bought a lot to enter into my lifetime tool supply..

I didn't do much to the motor as it started after sitting for 24 years (try thay with a modem vehicle) just changed the oil replaced cracked wired and replaced plugs and rebuilt carb Everything else was restored, had 21 leafs prongs in it so I took out 11, it still rates as a 1 ton. Had a lot of metal fab including the entire bed(found a guy in pa with original plans) brakes,were complete rebuilt (drums all around) ,fender tail had to be fabricated as well as,floors ,cab corners ,rocker panels and braces, windshield frames.. a lot of dents and dings as it was used by former owner as a wood truck. Even had dents in the roof! It should of really went to the scrap yards but it ran and I didn't have heart to take a running vehicle to the junk yard especially a rare vehicle like a pick up. It feels so good to be almost done with it .. hoping for memorial day parade unveiling.

Thanks , been quite a project.. only work on it on nice days outside barn is dirt floor and loose to many parts when they fall.. it's a 55 willys ,bought it for the dump.bed, but it ran so I decided to fix it up..

I can't see buying a cooler but I Burned a gift card on a travel mug and I cannot believe how long it keeps coffee hot. Literally an hour and 45 minutes after I pour it and I can barely take a sip. Same thing with cold, my drink has ice in it hours later. Well worth the cash
