  1. Snuck up within 8 yards of this 8-point feeding just of a trail in ADK's Fulton County in the pouring rain... had to wait about a minute before I could get a shot at his shoulder... My biggest muzzleloader buck with patch & round ball... I was dreading the drag out, but it wasn't too bad at 2 hours... I just love the big woods

  6. That nice. We have states willing to move walls to try and stop a disease that may kill a deer or two and a country that will do nothing to protect its people. Yup, that sounds about right in this so screwed up world.

  7. I dunno....., pappy always used to say that when he came home from hunting camp so I just assumed that's what he was talking about, lol He's kinda weird like that with the stories though. The only guy I know that wears red face paint!

  10. I called the landowner and verified I'm the only one with permission. I told her what I found and she asked me to leave a note and take down the stand. She also have the ok to take the cam and leave my number to retrieve it. I guess I will double lock my stands in there... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  11. Let me rephrase AGAIN. Free to any hunter that actually needs gear to get out there. If u have stuff, don't say you want it. Maybe for a youth just getting started or a guy who lost his job.... etc. I'm not using it and I don't expect to make money. I'd rather make somebody happy

  12. We have gotten awful spoiled, haven't we? In many places these days, it is not a question of finding a deer. It is more a question of figuring out exactly which deer we want to shoot. We've actually gotten to a point of arrogance about the subject. We get downright cocky about our hunting, or at least that's the kind of image we want to project to our peers .... lol. But a lot of us remember times when deer were not so plentiful, and taking a deer was not taken for granted. We didn't raise our own back then, or feed them or coddle them for our own benefits. A deer, any deer, was a hard earned trophy, and there was a very real reason for the saying that "If it's brown, it's down". However, in spite of our modern-day arrogance, it has to be admitted that there are still places where a deer harvest is not a given, let alone the ability to be "picky" in the selection of that kill. So when somebody says that this year if it's brown, it's down, I don't come out with the criticism. I understand exactly what they are saying. Either life's demands has limited their time, or the limited availability in their hunting area does not allow them to assume that they have the luxury of picking and choosing. At any rate, the fact that they have purchased a license and that they intend to abide by the laws of NYS means that any success that they have will get a sincere congratulations from me.

  14. I have a hardly used Mossberg 500 field 28" field barrel chambered in 12 gauge. It comes with 3 chokes and choke wrench. (full, modified, and improved cylinder). I've only put maybe 20 to 30 rounds through it. Choke case not included. 3rd choke is in the barrel. Retails at MidwayUSA for $189.99. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/742385/mossberg-barrel-mossberg-500-12-gauge-3-28-full-modified-improved-chokes-vent-rib-ported-blue?cm_vc=ProductFinding I'm asking a $100 for it.

  23. I'm assuming you don't own the land, so one thing I would suggest is to speak to the landowner before you take any action......myself and a group of others had "exclusive" rights to a large piece of property at one time, one of the others caught a "trespasser" on the property and got into an altercation with him, turned out to be a relative of the property owner who unknown to us, also had permission......end result was we were asked not to come back.

  26. I didn't know the term "if it's brown it's down" was specifically meant that you were heading out to kill a fawn..........could very well be the guy who passed on smaller bucks all year hoping for a really nice one has finally decided he'll settle for the smaller 6 or 8 he passed up all season.......couple weeks ago my wife asked me if I was gonna "put the smackdown on a big old swampy donkey", haven't spoken to her since.

I am going to hunt Pittsford near the Mendon border and my oldest son will be hunting a few miles away on Rt 251 in Mendon . I'll be hunting from the spot where I shot the doe last week . I hope the deer will cooperate again . Rain , rain , go away !

  29. Some type of moisture wicking compression first layer smartwool long underwear as second layer I like fleece as outer layer except when it's windy. Need something nylon like to break the wind. I have a Northface polar fleece I can wear hiking in single digits with no wind and be fine and freeze at 35 degrees with wind. Like someone else mentioned, keep that head and neck warm.

  31. media driven paranoia. You should now all realize that how your acting is exactly how uneducated people act about gun control when the media scares them a little. Do your research before you freak. I have been on several conference calls with my company and very knowledgeable doctors. This is NOT an issue. You should NOT cancel your travel plans.

  38. Come on guys, as stated in the original post, as it is every year, this thread is meant to post pics and stories of YOUR harvests, not to comment on the pics, or post your buddy's deer. If thats what you want to do, feel free to start your own thread. Thanks.

  40. My family doesn't eat a lot of venison, actually its really just me except for a roast or 2 a year with my girls. So the deer I want for the freezer will be a small one.probably a decent size fawn.If I can get 20-25lbs of meat I am a happy camper.I really don't give a rats butt what people think of me on this subject either, its legal, its my money that pays for my hunting, its my tag and its my life.I feel this is no different than someone saying that someone shouldn't shoot a spike,4 point or anything not as wide as the ears.

  41. I'm extremely hard on boots. All I wear is rubber boots. I had mucks, lasted two seasons before they sprung a leak. Out of warranty after a year on them. Bought under armour spinex last year. Toe was coming apart just the tiniest bit this year. I emailed under armour Sunday evening and told them for $180 I expected more from them for that price. Monday morning someone personally called me from under armour and it was an American haha. I was in shock. She told me there was a lifetime guarantee on all of their products. She told me I could exchange for the same pair or a different pair for the $180 price. I told her we were in the middle of hunting season and she overnighted me a new pair of UA HAW 800g boots that I chose with a return label for the other ones. She said just save the receipt and order number and no matter how many yrs from now the warranty is lifetime for the original price I payed of $180. Now that's standing behind your product! And the UA boots are way more comfy then mucks. They have a awesome heel support in them.

  42. So as some of you know I moved south for work. We had a wedding in Rochester on 10/4. So I packed my gear and bow in my case and the wife, son and I flew home for 11 days. Burned the rest of my vacation time and an extra $25 each way to bring the bow but it was a small price to pay for some NY bowhunting (although a month too early). I hunted pretty hard for so early in the season. Mostly 8F, but a few days in 7J. A total of 5 morning and 4 evening sits. The first evening I saw deer but no shots. Tuesday morning i had several great shots at 3 doe but I was not going to fill the freezer till later in the week. Filling the freezer was an essential part of the mission. I am not sure what kind of hunting I will have on lightly scouted public land down here and my NY properties hold some excellent deer and a lot of doe. I do not have another shot at a deer till the following Monday morning. I had seen a real nice buck and a few smaller ones and even more doe, but none within bow range. I am now nervous I will not fill the freezer at all. The morning hunt allowed me to see a nice big shooter doe who walked directly head on towards me and then under my stand before leaving and not providing a shot. Son of gun. With a 4am wakeup call for our Tuesday morning flight I had no intentions of wanting to hunt Monday night. It was warm, it was windy and I didn't really want to shoot, track, gut and drag a deer the night before I left. I had everything to pack. Didn't have time to really clean up all the mess...But of course I did anyhow. I was in the stand at 3:30. Around 5pm I'm sitting there and i hear a crunch to my left. Sounds like the same f'n squirrel that's been around me all hunt. Well what do I see but a young doe. Not a real freezer filler, but a deer just the same at about 15 yards. I stand up. Grab the bow off the hanger, draw and let one fly down through the back, into a lung and out the guts (funny angle). She runs < 100 yards and piles up. I want to find her and get her out before it gets dark. Call my dad to get the cart and then I get down to go get her. She died quickly and nicely in the pines. Quick gut and a few minutes pass and dad's there to help. It's about 6:15 at this time and getting dark. For anyone who has ever hunted old pines you know that you can walk in them pretty well but you tend to snap and crack a lot of dead lower limbs to get through. Well we are dragging her out making all kinds of noise and talking about the stand and the hunt. We cross a small dried up ditch and pause. Talk some more and then just as we're about to move on I turn to see A nice 2.5 year old 7 pointer. Not 5 yards behind us on the run we're walking back on. WTF!? He is downwind as well and it was windy! "Dad... Dad." "what" "holy shit there's a buck behind us... Dad what do I do" "shh be quiet" He stands there for about 10 seconds looking at us totally unphased. This to me is a shooter buck. Of course I have no bow and arrow. I'm in the post hunt "I don't care" mode. He then walks up a parallel run and into the woods. Provided a nice 5 yard shot broadside, although in the dark it would have been tough. Totally unspooked the whole time. We stood there in shock and disbelief. My father has been hunting the better part of his 60 years and has never seen such a thing. I have heard stories and seen videos of bucks approaching downed bucks, but never this. Never this early either. All we can figure is that our crashing through the woods sounded like some bucks going at it and piqued his interest.... but still he was almost tame. It was wild. If you read my whole long story and found it interesting than thanks. Honestly I just had to write it down.

  43. Going to a reservation is like traveling to a foreign nation that happens to also speak English. Reservation land is treated like another sovereign nation's land. The resident Natives on a reservation have their government, police force, and judicial system. After all, you don't expect to just cross the border into Canada and starting hunt there without permission/permit for the firearm being transported there and a valid Canadian hunting license do you?

  44. I hunting Reservation land with a good friend of mine, some years ago. I needed to meet the chief and get his written permission what day (s) I would be on my friends land along with a NYS hunting license, not that it was needed, because it's not part on NYS., but I believe he wanted to know I had the experience. I also carried my NYS hunting license, just in case for my sake. I also knew a lot of friends on the reservation, which may have helped my chances.

  46. Some of us have standards it's unfortunate you have small deer on your wall and you don't manage the land you hunt just because a deer has a big rack doesn't mean there a 41/2 51/2 year old this is why New York has small deer because everyone's trigger happy set standards for yourself it's rewarding I can shoot any small deer I want that's not the way I run things on my kand Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  47. My point was that the best caliber to use is the one that you shoot the most and are the most familiar with. I use the .243 for just about everything around here except squirrels and birds. I've been using it since I was a kid and it works for me. I see it works for you as well. No argument. Nice buck, by the way!
