  3. Glad you were able to subdue the Christmas gift-giving angst Lawdwaz. Peace be with you. On another note, I gave myself the most wonderful manicure today. A moisturizing soak that lasted almost two hours, including 10w-30 fully synthetic tractor oil that was a bit too hot at the start but finished beautifully, a brief spritz of carb cleaner to evict the mice that were in the intake canister of said tractor, a generous application of hydraulic fluid when the log splitter spit up on me, and I finished up with some EPA-approved biodegradable bar and chain oil. The shape and buff treatment was accomplished when I got sloppy and careless with the angle grinder sharpening mower blades for next year. This happens sometimes when you're trying to hold a beer in the other hand late in the afternoon. Thankfully there was no manscaping today, but I'm cutting firewood tomorrow afternoon so I'll be sure to let you folks know if anything like that happens! Then again, maybe I won't mention it. All in all I had good day, but ymmv. Merry Christmas to everyone. Be well and be happy. Mark

  4. According to the article, its pretty far from being proven yet. Still has a ways to go before anyone could pick the ball up and run with it.

  6. 20" barrel might be better suited to a .358 Win or other large bore/moderate case capicity cartridge. Seems like a waste on a .270.

  7. I don't know, tough question... I would say the stands are not deep enough... I hunt exclusively a two-man I have plenty of width but when the seat is down there is just not enough room. I will almost always try to fold the seat up so I can pick up the extra room when standing. My feel will usually hang over the platform in the sitting position. Also, the bottom rung/step needs a welded platform that contacts the ground. Reason for this, if you don't accommodate and set the platform running up hill a little, as soon as the wet weather comes and you step on ladder the two vertical legs bury deep into the ground. Over time, they continue to dig in a little putting the platform even more at downward slope. The are small things just nuisances.

  11. LOL.. I kind of expected as much from the biologist... I have had many conversations with NYS biologists and attend deer forums with biologists present and I am usually surprised at how little they really know about whitetails... yeah they know all the scientific terms and stats... but I have found that they know little about whitetail traits and habits. Trust me.. it is a buck urine stain... I've seen more than my share of them. Think about it... if one deer is eating pokeweed berries in a group, so are the other deer... if it was from pokeweed berries there would be stains all over from all the deer peeing red... But I suppose if I was biologist that didn't know the answer... I would have used the pokeweed save as well...

  12. When you put food out the critters will come to it. I don't know of any way that you can be selective about exactly which critters come in to a baited site. Ask a trapper how they avoid house pets and they'll tell you to stay away from places with house pets nearby. It's the only thing I've ever found to work reliably.

  13. Why manscape and get razor burn there? Then have it itch, no thanks. Then cause "carpet" burn from your stumble a few days later. All this manscaping, manicure, pedicure, and facials talk is starting to sound like getting ready for make-up, lipstick, and a wig. To each their own, but I am starting to picture hunters in drag - not a pretty sight in my head. A haircut, shave, and clip the nails for a night on the town/go to a concert (quartet, orchestra, opera)/play with the wife is all good.

  14. You're talking about stride Terry... which can be a good indicator of a big deer, but many does are long bodied... more important is the stagger which is the distance left to right of the tracks... a big buck will always be bigger in the chest than a big doe... wide staggers 10" or more will be a really big bodied buck... and will always be accompanied by a big print as well.. about the size of a 30-06 shell. Heavier deer leave deeper prints too.

  15. I loaned my 7mm-08 M700 Mtn Rfl DBM to a young man for his 1st deer hunting season in 2010. He shot his 1st buck with it at about 90yds from my tri-pod. The deer left a blood trail that looked like it came from a garden hose & only went about 30 yds.

  16. I switched to the 7mm-08 a few years back. So far I have taken deer from 50 to a little over 200 yards with it and it has performed great. Light recoil, hits hard and very accurate. I have only used Remington 140 gr. factory loads.

  17. Luckily my daughter is home from college so I dragged here out with me this morning. She picked out, what she says are, clothes, shoes and a few other things that my wife will love….We'll see. For all I know, my daughter is messing with me and picked out a bunch of ,hideous, old lady things.. Fingers crossed.

  18. I've been thinking, since my first post. A little while back I picked up a King Cobra, in beautiful condition, for 650. On line revolvers like that were going for 1000+ and the Python is a much more desirable gun. I bet your friends Colt could bring 1500 +

  20. That was live weight. He dressed 219#. He had scars all over his cape & 1 scar from an encounter with me from 3 years earlier. I had a shoulder mount done since we had so much history. I saw him 3 times in 2001, shot at him once, fumbled once with a gun that I was unloading when I looked up & saw him 150yds across the field. He avoided me for 3 years after all that but slipped up on election day 2004 when I stayed out longer than usual on a rainy morning. I was trying to wait out the rain while sitting nice & dry in my tri-pod that has a tin roof. I am 5'10" & weighed about 285 myself in this picture. In 2001 I took a shot at him at about 230yds quartering to me to his left. He had his head down feeding. I held just to the left of what I thought was the pocket shadow behind the shoulder. At the shot he turned & ran off with his tail flagging. All I found was a piece of fat about the size of a match head & some short hair. As it turned out that "shadow" I was holding to the left of (his right) was the dark streak down the center of the back of his neck. I was going to sell the cape since it was so large, but when I saw the scar on the hide I decided to have him mounted. The finished mount has a dark streak in the fur where the bullet creased him. You can see one of his many battle scars just below the throat patch.

  23. My buddy is wishing he spent a few bucks extra to go to 12' high. We are redoing a few of his trusses to raise a ceiling section because he bought a hydraulic vehicle lift and it needs 11'-8" for the clearance. He also wanted a loft storage area and the 12' would have worked better. I think it was a very small amount to go from 10-12'. he is kicking himself...lol.

  27. I always thought of going deep, until this year. Due to an injury, I was unable to go too far up the mountain. So I decided to hunt only about 200 yards off of the road, within sight of my vehicle and about 75 yards off of the main trail. I didn't plan on seeing much and was ok with that, however there was some standing corn nearby on the adjacent property. I have hunted this property for several years and I always tried to go farther and deeper than anyone else. Yet I always seemed to have other hunters show up not long after first light. Sometimes they would come from the other side of the property from which I came. I was in well before first light. At 6:30 the brigade showed up. They marched up the mountain past me talking and making plenty of noise on the main trail. Shortly after they passed, a beautiful 10 point came down from the higher elevation. He must have heard the commotion and circled around. Every property is different. As others have said, use google maps to learn the land. Also try to figure out where the deer will want to go when the pressure is on and where you can sneak in without alerting deer to your presence. Sometimes you can't overlook the obvious.

  36. UPDATE: Today was a success............I stopped and got two gift certificates for my father and his wife, both restaurants. One is a fancy breakfast place, Breakin' Eggs and the other is Rizotto on Maple Rd. Both places are winners. last night I was laying in bed and it hit me.........back in October we were at Tractor Supply getting dog food and my wife was snooping around the clothing area. The place is FAR from her favorite places to shop was there just killing time with me. Well she spotted a pair of those weird tight stretchy jeans from Levis (IIRC). They were $50 and she said "naa, too much money" At the time I took a picture of the tag and thought I'd Google it and see if I could score them cheaper somewhere else. I never did find them cheaper but damn the luck....they were 15% off today, WOOT!! Because I took a picture I knew the exact size. Smart? No, VERY smart. Also yesterday I thought of something else she has been nagging me for; an extra thing to hang clothes behind our bedroom door. I checked Kohl's, Pier 1 and finally Target before I scored what I wanted. Under the "Lame" category you can add the FREE $35 Gift Certificate for Banchetti's Sunday Brunch that came with the $100 to Rizotto's. (free is good) So here's what I have now: -Work shoes -Delta Sonic 3 car wash package & dinner at Applebee's -Pants -Clothes hanger/rack -$35 GC to Banchetti's Sunday Brunch Tomorrow I'll grab some perfume and a card.......maybe something else too???? I really liked the idea of a musical or play not nothing really caught my eye and a couple that did were sold out. I thought about a movie deal but ahhh, boring.

  38. My mother has a problem with deer eating flowers and apple trees in the back yard.I chose not to hunt there as there is nothing worse than being in a tree hearing your mother yell for you to come open a jar.... but I digress. I allowed 2 people to hunt there with the point being to reduce the herd. One consistently killed does usually several and has got a nice buck as well.after takend a doe or two. The other waits for a buck. There is only 1 hunter allowed now can u guess which one?

  41. I wouldn't bury anything that is not rated for direct contact with earth/moisture. Readily available 2x's and 4x4's are not suitable or recommended for this as they are only treated to .40 standards unless special-ordered. .60 treated is generally considered minimum for direct contact and is only standard for 4x6's and larger. The expected lifespan depends a lot on the drainage but can easily be as little as 8 to 10 years for .40 treated lumber vs 15 to 25 years for the .60 treated stuff.

  46. i've had great performance with Covert MP6 black flash cameras. I've got 5 of them with the oldest being about 1& 1/2 yrs old and have been outside since new. No failures, decent pic quality, and 4 months plus on battery life with literally thousands of pics. Choice of either 4 or 8 AA's but I've always went with 8. They're the older model, but still available online for about $125.

  47. I just realized that I posted in Live From the Stand thread instead of this one, so I'll just copy and paste it if that's ok. Got it done last night with the bow in 1C. It seems like the second rut is in full swing down here on the Island. I scouted the area yesterday morning and I found plenty of new rubs in the woods as well as a few new scrapes. Even though it is a last light spot, I did get in a little later than I would have liked. I almost thought about bailing out as I was kicking up deer on the way in. I'm glad I didn't. It seemed liked everything was moving a little earlier last night. The weather was perfect. Very light NE winds, cold, and some flurries. Shortly after getting settled in, I had 4 does come in. The biggest one was no dummy. There was another stand about 50 yards from that someone left in the area. She came in with her head up looking for someone in it that wasn't there. Then she appeared to be checking every other tree in the area. I thought to myself, she's a smart one and needs to go. Unfortunately, she never gave me a shot. After they moved off, I also saw a 4 point with his nose to the ground, then he stopped to freshen up a scrape. He got a pass. Had 5 more does come in as it was getting dark as well as seeing a few more moving around in the thickets. Then a solid 8 with some decent mass appeared on the edge of the clearing about 60 yards out. He stood there for a few minutes checking out the area. Then just as I was losing light, he made a beeline towards me and the scrape. At 32 yards he went broadside, and I let one fly. Found my arrow and it looked good, but I decided to back out anyway and come back with a good light after dinner. I was literally on my hands and knees trying to get through blow downs and thorny thickets following his blood trail. He only went about 100 yards with a double lung hit. Not my best buck, but def my biggest this late in the season and a really good one for the area I was in, considering all of the pressure that is there earlier in the season.

  49. Look for "wild life" concentrations around the local watering holes when Buffalo weather takes a turn for the worse. Many creatures diets consist of only liquids at these times. It's not uncommon to see the predator-prey roles reversed during the long battles with old man winter. Young bucks often come out in force to feast on the old cougars that are attracted to the neon lights!
